5:34 am
head of the legion of mary, the local chapter of it. can you tell us about that? >> we have a number of catholics, men and women, who are committed to the love of mary, to unite themselves to mary, and carrying out their daily activities. but, also in their time, their free time, they also are committed to apostolic wo, to try to bring christ to the world. that is our mission, the legion of mary is in all countries, and has been in san francisco since 1933. we are really pleased to be able to be here to talk about the rosary valley. >> that sounds gndoval, you work at the parish of the cathedral ofwh is yo particular >> yes. i have the ministry to the sick and homebound for the cathedral of st. mary of the assumption. and, some of the work i do is very hands on it is walk in the
5:35 am
footsteps of the gospel and helping people who are very sick. eight visits 16 skilled nursing homes, whether they are hospices and dimension units. five people in crisis reaching out to mary. it's wonderful to work at the cathedral. i tell people that t us,sivi your parishes like your bedroom, your cathedral is like your living room and house of god. >> we are talking about mary who has a relationship special with all of us and each of you. in particular, ray, you worked as the sacristan at saint unitedh olmea the church. >> that is right. i always looked upon it as the house of mary. mary in some ways is the head of not taking over from the bishops, but she does inveryreisg , thall of us are u chdren of mary, because we
5:36 am
are also united to christ by our baptism. so, she looks out for all of those details in the church that only she can really notice, just like she did in the came of the wedding. she provided for that extra wine they needed. mary gives us that continued, it continues this very day. i have seen that in my work as a sacristan. >> that sounds good. and your work as well, you find that helping people to reach to mary in their illness and suffering is beneficial? >> it's wonderful. and realizing our work at church sits in the context of the universal church. i have to point to an interestingisngusbut he s th great student of the blessed mother father reni loring 10 who did these fantastic piece of work, called the dictionary of the operations of the
5:37 am
blessed mother. in it, he documents 2600 operations of the blessed mother of mary around the world. among the 2600, i remember these were approved by local bishops, 15 of them had been approved by the vatican, the holy saint, for prayer throughout the world. i find that people have personal relationships with the blesd , mothseaner in conversations, and certainly by the power of the rosary, as they meditate, and they articulate the police in the blessed mother. >> that is what i am kind of getting at. i am learning that as well in my own private life. it's a new practice for me. when i am anxious, disturbed, or don't know what to do with my brain, i say you know what, i can go to mary, the site for instance one decade of thei n s it calms me so much and i am
5:38 am
not frittering away spiritual energy on anxieties. i credit her with that. >> a wonderful thing, ifu to really process the great prayer of gabriel the archangel who says hail mary full of grace the lord is with you. and, when you slow down and you start to take that in, and you start to meditate on each of the words of the great archangel, you hear the words of the eternal father coming through of the blessed mother. you begin to see her role. and for those of us that might fear in jesus, oftentimes jesus onmes as a baby. ques so, about that. i find it jesus a little intimidating. and mary is a helpful mother, sort of help as you always have a devotion
5:39 am
to mary, always understood her place in your life? >> i was raised in san francisco in a catholic school and family. we pray to the rosary fairly often together as a family. so, in my high school days, maybe it was more of a chore, the rosary. before that, it was really a lifetime. you know, there were difficult times in my family. i really believed mary saved me from drip drowning as a young boy. so, when i think back to those days, i am very grateful. and when i turn 21, it was a difficult time for me. and, the rosary just came to my mind. you know, it was a grace with a miraculous medal, i encourage everyone to have a miraculous medal that they wear. and in rosary, , that had so much inspiration for me, history of on. praying the
5:40 am
rosary as a meditation, learning the gospel, a summary of the gospwh, life i would say. ever since then, mckesson it's close to 50 years i felt blessed . we are going to talk about the rosary rally later. that was a key role, too. can't sleep that out. >> we will take a brief break now. we will return and talk about rie history of the rosary inthe va n frleancisco.e y rall
5:41 am
5:42 am
thank you for joining us on mosaics, again. we are talking about the blessed mother mary. we are talking about the at guest r special prayer. here, rat, who looks much
5:43 am
what i'm going to tell you, he was in attendance at the 1961 rosary rally in golden gate park. it is a famous even in san francisco history. i have to admit, i am eager also, but we were both there. i was a 12-year-old kid. this was father patrick p.m., and came to san francisco archdiocese, and put on a rosary valerie in golden gate park. let's look at photos from it. we will run some slides on the screen. what these are our stills from a very grainy documentary 15 minutes long. you can see this on youtube, we will tell you later where you can find it. this is the family rosary crusade. if we can move through these files, the gigantic crowd estimated half 1 million people, is that right? >> that is right. >> and another shot, same crowd stretching through the park. and here, father pms mantra or
5:44 am
slogan, motto, the family that prays together stays together. praying the rosary was a family occupation, that is father patrick p.m. and, take it for here for the next slides. patrick payne was the emissary, there we are. >> he had a mission from our lady to travel around the world to promote the rosary and peace in the world. this is a time after world war ii. people were really desirous of peace, and our lady did ask for the rosary. so, he responded to that. and, he held these rallies all over the world in manila, south africa, europe, ireland, he was from ireland originally. he went to the united states and became a holy cross priest. in hollywood, he made tv shows that were famous, many actors were part of it. he was valerie well known. we had a half 1 million from
5:45 am
all over san francisco. >> this picture we see now is significant. let's see the next one as well if we can. what we see is in the recitation of the rosary, which 500,000 people did, up on the stage where families. and families of different colors, different ethnicities and languages. they led the rosary for us. we have one more slide, or are we done with those? we are back in the present. that was 1961, you and i were there. it was a major event. father patrick p.m. had this mission that went all over the world. tell me about the rivas evocation of the rosary rally in san francisco. >> we know that many people have continued to pray the rosary individually, and families. but, we have not had that experience of game of coming together as a family, a family see my say, in the church. i felt called, and others, too,
5:46 am
to restart this on the 50th anniversary of that. so, in 2011, we gaeredth er gecothlumbtous, individual cath priests, and sisters. he organized this with the idea we would like to go back to the polo fields. for practical reasons, it was impossible. we were there at the civic center. that was very inspiring i think.. >> so you have this rosary valerie which includes a gathering session this will be the ninth year in a row >> yes >> i should say for our viewers, coming up a week from now, october 5 will be the rosary rally in san francisco. can you tell us something about that, how is that going to happen? >> we will have mass starting at 10:00 in the cathedrawith ho and, at the end of the
5:47 am
celebration of holy mass, we will have a procession to the united nations plaza. so, in the last several years, the rally has been held totally at the cathedral. we are going back to a place where we have been, or other rosary rallies to the united nations plaza alongside market street, near the pride street i believe. then, we will listen to talk by a carmelite priest on the scapular of mary. and, also have adoration of the blessed sacrament and the rosary that will conclude then with benediction. so, we are looking forward to a spiritual grace for all. >> that sounds great. everybody is welcome to attend income, right? >> we hope as many people can anticipate will take advantage of this opportunity to help our city, help each other, encourage each other, and help our world >> and deacon sandoval, i don't
5:48 am
like crowds generally, but i find something so uplifting about the processions and such ceremonies with mary. we have guadalupe anna, they have this rosary rally, had a consecration to the archdiocese. which the spiritual benefit of these kind of events? >> remember what a consecration is. it is eight entrustment to the mother for protection, or healing, for presence. i go back to our own mothers, we cry, our mother runs. when this weather comes running, we cry. the archbishop of san francisco has entrusted the entire archdiocese. our theme is the family rosary. i like what ray is saying, it is a family of families, a
5:49 am
community of communities, a people of peoples, all entrusted to our blessed mother. one other thing is remembering that the scapular which pope pius of the 12th said, this is the sign of consecration in perilous times. i would dare say, given what's going on in the world these days, we live in perilous times. the idea that the mother of god can hover over us, protect us from whatever storm there is, is a beautiful thing. >> it is very much so. let's take another break, we will be back to talk more in detail about the rosary valerie rally coming up october 5.
5:50 am
5:51 am
hello, welcome back. we are talking about the blessed virgin mary, and some of the hard work she is doing on our behalf. i have a quotation from benedict the 16th, the pope emeritus, who says we may be sure of it from on high, mary follows our footsteps with gentle concern, dispels the gloom in moments of darkness and distress, reassures us with rosary herly hand. tabout the rally coming up. the feels like a flyer and poster from a rosary rally, can rerun that? here we are, the family rosary valerie rally, significan
5:52 am
the meing of this is. >> this is a very old image. it comes out of the 20s and 30s. it was a great quotation from saint dominic. he talks about the fact that by these two signs, the blessed mother will save the world. we know that mary is full of grace and the lord is with her, and that is how she does it. you see the hard exposed, the immaculate heart of mary, to which we are consecrating ourselves, renewing the consecration. the theme underneath her painting as we are all one in the family of god. we are uniquely universal, and universally unique as the people of god. the interesting thing about this is we are going to have the carmelite fathers, we have a wonderful speaker that is going to speak about the scapular, and at the same time, we have dominicans coming in and procession with our 80 of
5:53 am
the rosary with a big scapular to show you the two gives. in one hand, she ry, on the oth will have the scapular our kreyr eat siaters thstreets of the city of st. francis, to proclaim our son ship and daughter ship to the blessed mother. >> the schedule of events is on this, too. there is a website. i invite everyone to go to it. it is rosary rally sf.com. you will find this information there. the archbishop says massive cathedral, the archbishop and the worshipers take the blessed sacrament. i think there is a statue of mary. and all this company travels down to the un plaza? >> i should say one thing before he leaves the cathedral as he is going to do the prayer of investiture of the scapular, which has specific sp, for exte
5:54 am
of the blessed mother's protection over each and every person. we will distribute the scapular's. they will be blessed by the archbishop, and everyone will be invested in the scapular. that is a gift of the church to the people of god. >> i must say, looking from the outside, the procession like this, it is touching to see people coming out as a group, displaying their faith in such a gentle and peaceful way. now, ray, the focus of this is always peaceful, always gentle, always nurturing, am i wrong? >> right, the rosary is, we look at it as the solution to all our ills. you might say, it could be a holy eucharist has a primary place in our faith. the rosary has been given to us like an extra added things that all of us can pray at any time,
5:55 am
day or night, while we are working, even, or playing, writing in our car, running that marathon. my father used to do, praying the rosary. >> is that right? >> used to say, he thought half of the people running the marathon were praying the rosary. he managed to complete, in the 60s, he was running marathons and groceries. >> i think i said before, when i am anxious waiting for the bus and don't know what i'm doing, i'll say the deck of the rosary, too. you were promoting the rosary as a containing the relationship to mary and to her. but also, you meditate on the highlights and low lights of the highlight of her son coffees the history of the rosary? the life and resurrection of
5:56 am
jesus. the rosary can be called a compendium of the gospel or summary of the gospel that can be a foundation i know it was a foundation for my spiritual life, starting when i was young, especially when i went into my adult life, and all the cares and s of my life. i found the rosary to be a great help and assistance. >> i would like to add also, at the end of the rosary valerie, we will do benediction. she brings us to jesus. i noticed in my work, with end- of-life cases i deal with in the hospice care, doing a special care. people at the end of life often times have the rosary in their hand. they wrap it around her hand and prepare themselves to receive jesus. the power of the rosary, we call it a couple of things, we call it the ladder to heaven. we call it the spiritual weapon of choice to protect us from the diabolical. we call it the way toroway to j the spirituality is deep, wide,
5:57 am
and unique across all cultures. >> we have one sandoval, would you issue an invitation to our people that come to the rosary rally? >> i would ask you please, come and join us in solitary as a family of families. lifting of the rosary, inspired by our spiritual father, the archbishop of san francisco, come receive the sacraments of eucharist, a reconsideration, the investiture of the scapular, ascoming together as a community united in faith. >>, for being here ray, and
