national day. and winter in september. record-breaking cold sets in in the northwest where four feet of the northwest where four feet of snow blanketed a town. captioning funded by cbs good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. anne-marie green is off. i'm laura podesta. e impeachment inquiry into president trump is moving forward this morning. democratic leaders want to act quickly to avoid losing momentum. the chairman of the house intelligence committee, adam schiff, told "60 minutes" they plan to subpoena documents from the president's attorney, rudy giuliani, as soon as today. a new cbs news poll found more than half of americans approve of congress' decision to open the impeachment inquiry into the president. marc liverman is in new york. marc, what's next in the impeachment probe? >> reporter: good morning, laura. hearings and depositions are scheduled for this week. this as the trump administration continued to question the whistleblower's motives.

house intelligence committee chairman adam schiff said the complaint is a roadmap for the impeachment inquiry. >> reporter: your committee has an agreement with the whistleblower that he will testify? >> we have agreement that he or she will testify, yes. >> reporter: schiff says that will happen very soon and in a way that protects his or her identity. the whistleblower's attorney says no agreement with congress has been reached. >> spies and treason. we used to handle it a little differently -- >> reporter: comments by president trump last week prompted the whistleblower's lawyers to send a letter to the acting director of national intelligence noting that offering a $50,000 bounty for their client's identity. tweeting throughout the day sunday, the president said he deserves to meet his accuser and warned of big consequences. the whistleblower's complaint alleges president trump pressured ukraine's president to investigate joe biden and his son, hunter. it also says that white house

holiday approaching. we have this report from hong kong. >> reporter: fires erupted in central hong kong as tensions between police and protesters plunged the city into a state of disarray. videos posted to social media show a metro station engulfed in flames after molotov cocktails were thrown inside. police responded first with teargas and then a water cannon in a routine that's repeated itself for 17 straight weeks. right now we're in a mad crush of protesters running from the central business district. just moments ago riot police fired several rounds of teargas. with less than 48 hours until china's national day, protesters also vented their anger at beijing, taking down a sign celebrating the country's 70th birthday. many are resentful of china's communist party and the perception that the rights and

freedoms they enjoyed under a policy of one country-two systems is slowly being eroded. tanya chan is a pro-democracy hong kong legislator. what is the dream of hong kongers these days? >> all regiony as promised, one country, two system, high autonomy, people, hong kong people rule hong kong. and now it seems that we may need to lose our life in exchange for these promises. >> reporter: until that dream bears any hope of becoming reality, demonstrators say hong kong's new normal is here to stay. cbs news, hong kong. people are being asked to stay home after a powerful early winter storm dumped up to four feet of snow in some parts of montana. the state's governor declared a winter storm emergency last night. watches and warnings were posted across the western half of the state.

this is the mostinches, while g falls has seen over 19. the heavy, wet snow blanketed major highways and piled up outside homes. high winds knocked down trees and caused thousands to lose power. the storm is expected failing to pay child support. and law enforcement officers in texas and new york are mourning the loss of one of their own. after two deadly shootings over the weekend. new york city police officer brian mulkeen was killed early

yesterday morning. officers say he died during a struggle with a suspect and was possibly killed by his own gun. the suspect also died. and in texas, a man is under arrest for killing a deputy who made history as one of the first in tex the traditional sikh turban on duty. the deputy is being remembered as a trailblazer and a hero. >> senseless. it was a total ambush by the suspect. the deputy never had a chance. >> a vigil was held for the officer yesterday. his alleged shooter is charged with capital murder, and a motive is not known. the murder trial of a former dallas police officer, amber guyger, resumes this morning. guyger is charged in the deadly shooting of botham jean in his apartment last year. she claimed she accidentally went to the wrong apartment. defense attorneys presented their case for about two hours on saturday, and on friday gooirlg took the stand ng if the d.a.

"usa today" says a mexico city roller coaster derailed mid ride leaving two dead and two others injured. a warning, the video might be disturbing. two men aged 18 and 21 died of head and other injuries when the last car on the coaster derailed at the amusement park on saturday.

preliminary investigations indicate a mechanical failure caused the car to come loose and fall from a height of about 33 feet. the decades' old coaster, like many others, was featured at other parks around the world before finding a home in mexico city. and "the new york times" reports that on its opening weekend, another horse has died at santa anita. saturday a 3-year-old colt named mtek collapsed in the stretch with both his front legs broken. he had to be euthanized. after 30 horses died at the race track in a six-month period ending in june, a series of changes were implemented. they were designed to better protect the thoroughbreds from catastrophic injury. >> there's a lot of money involved here. the bottom line is the welfare of that horse should come first, and it never does. >> the fatality at the famed california track came just days after governor newsom called the deaths a disgrace. ♪ low-cost fashion chain forever 21 has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. the privately held company says it will close up to 178 stories in the u.s. it once had more than 800 stores worldwide and 500 in the u.s. forever 21 specialized in fast fashion. over the last year, young people have been more interested in eco-friendly products. on the cbs "money watch," new details in the boeing investigation, and a major drug chain pulls zantac from its shelves. diane king hall has that from the new york stock exchange. good morning, diane. good morning, laura. well, stock futures are indicating a higher open this morning after stocks closed out last week with losses. the s&p 500 posted a second straight weekly decline as concerns over the escalation in the trade war with china grew. by the close friday, the dow

dropped 70 points. the s&p 500 was down 15, and the nasdaq lost 91 points. engineers working on the flight control system for the boeing 737 max reportedly left out key safeguards which were included in an earlier version according to the "wall street journal," citing sources familiar with the matter. the system known as mcas is being implicated by investigators in two deadly crashes within the last year. the system was reportedly harder to override and relied on data from just one of the sensors measuring the angle of the plane's nose. the expected fix will make it more like the older version. the fda is warning pet owners about salmonella and listeria after it was found in a certain type of raw dog food. a sample of performance dog frozen raw pet food tested positive during an inspection. another sample tested positive but had not been distributed. the fda is warning if you have any performance dog product that
