good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. president trump's personal attorney is now facing a battle of his own with a congressional impeachment inquiry. lawmakers have subpoenaed rudy giuliani to hand over documents related to ukraine and this comes as new information emerges about who else was listening to that phone call between president trump and his ukrainian counterpart this summer. laura podesta is in new york. what are we learning about that call right now? >> as you said, anne-marie, we were learning who was listening in. that would be secretary of state mike pompeo. some are saying he should have blown d whistle on the content of that call before the whistle-blower. attorney has been subpoenaed as part of the impeachment inquiry. ay thid aem advance his personal political

interests by abusing the power of the office of the president in a scheme. they want all documents related to his dealings with ukraine since the president's inauguration. >> i'm weighing the alternatives. i'll kind of like go through it, get all my evidence together, get charts. >> giuliani has admitted to asking ukrainian officials to investigate joe biden and his son hunter over claims of corruption, claims that are unproven. he was mentioned 31 times in president trump's phone call with the ukraine president. >> the call was perfect. when the whistle-blower reported it, he made it sound terrible. >> according to a white house summary of that call, mr. trump repeatedly asked volodymyr zelensky to look into the bidens. cbs news confirms secretary of state mike pompeo was listening in. >> we don't know what he did. >> on "the late show" with

accused of spying for china. the california man was arrested after a sting operation. jeff pegues has the undercover video that led to the lae video shows edward peng, a naturalized u.s. citizen, wrapping $20,000 in cash and taping it under a tv stand in a hotel in columbus, georgia. about three hours later he's back to pick up an sd card containing classified national security information, a double agent working for the fbi had left the card in the drawer before taking the $20,000. the so-called dead drop was one of six that took place between california and georgia. peng was working as a san francisco tour guide for chinese tourists but david andersen said he was actually working for the republic of china. >> pong was a secret agent involved in dead drops that

included payments. >> reporter: authorities say the double agent penetrated the spy spring in the san francisco airy in 2015. he would pick up the memory cards and fly them from the u.s. to china. former cia acting director michael morell says the spy game between u.s. and china is on the rise. >> his arrest is the fourth case we've seen of chinese espionage just in the last several months. i think it's both a reflection of how aggressive the chinese are being and how aggressive we're being in trying to push back on them. >> reporter: the u.s. attorney said northern california is ground zero in the fight to protect technology and intell t intellectual property. u.s. investigators say they had tight controls over the classified information turned over in the dead drops turned over by peng in 2001. jeff pegues, cbs news, washington. well, today marks the 70th anniversary since the founding of the people's republic of china. in hong kong the anniversary was marked with protests.

pro-democracy demonstrators stormed the streets of hong kong this morning. several clashed with police and were arrested. meanwhile in beijing this morning chinese president xi jinping looked on as chinese military was put on display. on the ground there were tanks and missiles and above fighter jets flew over tiananmen square. back home, another death is linked to vaping. the death occurred back in may before the outbreak was officially recognized this summer. this brings the nationwide total of confirmed deaths to at least 13. last week the cdc announced 805 confirmed improbable causes of lung injury associated with e-cigarette use in 46 states and the u.s. virgin islands. and jury deliberations will resume this morning in the murder trial of a former dallas

police officer. yesterday in closing arguments prosecutors said amber guyger was an intruder who shot and killed botham jean inside his apartment last year. akes thad when the verdict is announced, advocacy groups are urged to keep any demonstrations civil and peaceful. >> if she is found guilty, yes, there should be protests, but it should be dignified. it should be about botham jean's life. >> guyger testified last week that she mistook jean's apartment for her own after a long shift at work. four inmates who broke out of an ohio jail are back behind bars this morning. the men overpowered two female corrections officers on sunday using a homemade weapon. they were captured in north carolina yesterday. authorities say that the inmates had assistance from at least one person outside of the jail.

california's governor has signed the first law that would allow college students to sign with agents. under the law students will be allowed to sign deals with sneaker companies, soft drink companies, or other advertisers. they'll also be able to profit from their images and names just like pro athletes. the new law is expected to take effect in 2023. lakers' lebron james addressed this after a game yesterday. >> if i would have went off to one of these houses or big-time colleges where pretty much that er pce without my name on the back. >> the ncaa has expressed its opposition to the law which could end up being challenged in court. coming up on "cbs morning news," controversy over saying it's okay to eat red, andeath o

a crazy scene at chicago o'hare's international airport. yesterday an unmanned catering truck spun out of control next to a plane parked at a terminal. one quick-thinking worker rammed into the vehicle using another vehicle. american airlines says it looks like an accelerator got stuck and luckily no one was hurt. there's a controversy on red meat and a twist in a dreadlock-cutting incident. cbsnews.com reports a 12-year-old black girl in the northern virginia admitted to lying about classmates cutting off her dreadlocks. last week she accused six boys at a christian school of cutting her hair and calling her ugly. she acknowledged the allegations

were untrue after a police investigation. the girl's family apologized to the boys and the school. idaho hope falls say as man suffered severe burns after falling into thermal water at the old faithful geyser. park officials say the 48-year-old man told rangers he was walking near the geyser without a flashlight and tripped into a hot spring. he was able to get back to the report and call for help. rangers reportedly claimed he was drinking. he's in critical condition. the man could face charges. a "new york times" reports an nypd officer was killed by friendly fire during a struggle with a suspect. it happened sunday. investigators had previously suggest thad 33-year-old brian s from his own gun during the struggle, but police say mulkeen kept control of his gun and fired five shots after the suspects reached toward his waistband.th thaofficefired tent
