from the broadcast center in new york city, i'm t captioning funded by cbs it's thursday, october 3rd, 2019. this is the "cbs this morning." breaking overnight, a military exercise gone wrong. more than 20 paratroopers are hurt during an army training jump in mississippi. what we're learning about the accident that left some soldiers stuck in trees for hours. a world war ii-era bomber goes up in flames in connecticut killing at least seven people. what happened before the deadly crash landing. and forgiveness in court. we'll show you the emotional moment when a murder victim's brother embraced the former dallas police officer responsible for pulling the trigger.

good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with breaking news out of mississippi where at least 22 army paratroopers were hurt during a nighttime training exercise. the soldiers were taking part in a parachute jump at camp shelby about 12 miles south of hatters burg. their injuries are non-life-threatening, but some were taken to the hospital. about 650 soldiers stationed in anchorage, alaska, were participating in the training exercise. a camp shelby commander reportedly said the troops were injured after jumping from a c-130 aircraft and wind blew them away from their intended drop zone and into a group of pine trees. so paratroopers had been stuck in trees for hours. the mississippi national guard says about 80 jumpers missed their zone.

now to another incident involving military aircraft. the ntsb today will investigate the fiery crash of a world war ii-era bomber. the plane went down shortly after takeoff yesterday in connecticut. at least seven people were killed. the plane was used to take aircraft enthusiasts on thrill rides. kris van cleave has more on this story. boeing 93012, we'd like to return to the field. >> reporter: the world war ii b-17 burst into flames after crash landing at hartford's bradley airport. from the air you can see the burned wreckage. angela fletcher saw the plane moments before the crash. >> i heard what sounded like a freight train coming down the street. so i looked out the window and kind of waited for it, and all of a sudden i saw this plane go over the house real low. i heard the engine go pop, pop. you could tell there was >> reporter: the trouble started about five minutes into the flight. among the 13 on board were two pilots. they radioed the tower about a problem. >> what's the reason for contact?

>> the number four engine. we'd like to return. >> reporter: while trying to make an emergency landing it hit the de-icing building and a maintenance facility. one person was inside. >> we have a crash, we have a burn. victims are very difficult to identify. >> reporter: the 75-year-old restored bomber was one of just 18 b-17s left in the u.s. it was on a nationwide tour. the ten passengers paid up to $450 for a 30-minute thrill ride that ended in tragedy. >> these are husbands and wives and brothers and sisters and children and all members of our connecticut family. and we feel -- our hearts are broken for you right now. >> reporter: investigators and first responders remain at the crash site. the national transportation safety board's go team arrived at bradley airport tuesday afternoon. they'll begin the bulk of their

work. we know that three of the survivors were transferred to a burn unit. they have non-life-threatening injuries. kris van cleave, cbs news, hartford, connecticut. the white former dallas police officer convicted of murdering her black neighbor has learned her fate. yesterday amber guyger was sentenced to ten years in prison for the murder of bothan jean. -- of bothan jean. it was what jean's brother did after the sentencing that brought the court to a standstill. here's laura podesta. >> reporter: an extraordinary moment in a dallas courtroom wednesday. >> can i give her a hug, please? >> reporter: 18-year-old brandt jean forgave amber guyger who'd just been sentenced to ten years in prison for killing his older brother, botham. i don't wish anything bad on you. >> reporter: the former dallas police officer testified that she killed jean after mistakenly entering his apartment thinking it was her own. >> that ten years in prison is ten years for her reflection and for her to change her life.

>> reporter: guyger faced up to 99 years in prison. prosecutors had asked for 28 years which is how old jean would have been. >> i still want to see him -- >> reporter: both families testified during the sentencing phase. guyger's mother said her daughter wished she could take jean's place. >> she feels very bad about it. >> reporter: some outside the courtroom thought the sentence was too lenient. >> ten years -- >> reporter: though many calmed down after seeing video of that emotional hug. dallas police chief renee hall says that embrace is a model for the department which has been under scrutiny since the shooting. >> dallas today is different than it was yesterday. ing, judgemy kemhuggedd of the jean's family. she also gave a bible to guyger and embraced her, as well. and some critics are saying that hug was inappropriate for the judge overseeing the case.

others said it was a nice way to begin the healing process. amber guyger will be eligible for parole in five years. anne-marie? >> all right. laura podesta in new york. thank you. police in galveston have released body cam video of a man in handcuffs being led by officers on horseback. it prompted a public outcry over the summer. for the first time we are hearing what the officer said during the incident. janet shamlian reports. >> reporter: the never-before-seen body cam video is about 30 minutes long and shows the initial arrest of donald neely who was walked down the streets of galveston by two police officers on horseback. the image of the controversial august arrest sparking outrage and charges of racism. [ chants ] instead of sending for a police car, the officers walked neely to the station. one officer can be heard acknowledging how it looked.

>> this is going to look so bad. >> reporter: neely, a mentally ill man who was once homeless, was arrested for criminal trespass. >> stay right there. >> reporter: the officers were cleared of wrongdoing, and galveston police say the practice of using rope has been discontinued. janet shamlian, cbs news, houston. now to the impeachment inquiry into president trump. a former special envoy to ukraine is expected to testify before lawmakers behind closed doors today. kurt volker is the first official to testify in connection to a whistleblower's claims that president trump tried to pressure his ukrainian counterpart to investigate joe biden. meanwhile, mr. trump is ramping up his attacks against the democrats' investigation. nikole killion reports from washington. >> reporter: at a white house press conference, president trump addressed the political storm enveloping him. >> i'm used to it. for me it's like putting on a suit in the morning. >> reporter: he hammered democrats over their ongoing impeachment inquiry from nancy

the dow sank 494, the s&p 500 lost 52, and the nasdaq was down 123 points. the trump administration has been given approval to impose tariffs on goods from the european union. gouda cheese single malt whiskey and large aircraft are among the european imports being targeted. tariffs will be 10% for the e.u. aircraft and 25% for everything else. they're set to take effect two weeks from tomorrow. more than two dozen major companies are suing the nation's four biggest railway companies. csx transportation, norfolk southern, union pacific, and bnsf railway are the companies named in the lawsuit. it alleges the railroads had a price fixing scheme to illegally boost profits. the railways have not commented on the lawsuits. a federal judge is pushing carnival corporation executives to work faster to fix ocean pollution problems by the world's largest cruise line. earlier in year, carnival admitted violating probation
