live, from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix5 news. peopeaghwarh killed wreck snarling traffic for hours. good afternoon, i'm michelle griego. >> i'm kenny choi. that crash happened just before 12:30 early this morning. the car hitting a taxi on 11

northbound. kpix5's jackie ward has more. >> reporter: the taxi driver worked for national cab and it is a very somber day here. other drivers wouldn't comment on who the victim is. it was not his fault. this is what remained of the two cars that slammed into each other. on the left, a volkswagen sedan, chp says the female driver was the solo passenger in the car and driving the wrongway on northbound 101 when she crashed into a taxi killing the driver, two passengers, and herself. >> at this time, we are looking into whether seat belts were being used within that taxicab. it does appear one of the passengers was ejected from the vehicle due to the collision. but we do not know if drugs or alcohol were involved. that is something we do take a look at. not only in this collision, but all traffic collisions. especially at this time of the day or night. >> copy, it is unrecognizable. >> reporter: the call of the

crash came in around 12:30 a.m. they had received calls of a wrongway driver prior to that. it is unclear how long the volkswagen was traveling before slamming into the taxi. chp said it may have been as long as a mile-and-a-half from the 280-101 interchange to just north of candlestick. >> they could have been traveling quite some time. >> reporter: traffic was severely backed up for the bulk of the morning commute. chp had all lanes closed, shortly after the accident happened and didn't open the freeway until just before 7:00 a.m. jackie ward, kpix5. and we are still awaiting the confirmed identifications of the four people who were killed this morning. chp says that luggage was inside the taxi. we'll have much more on this story coming up on the kpix5 news at 5:00. and online, kpix.com. a woman charged with intentionally running down two pedestrians in cupertino heads

to court. she hit two pedestrians. one victim was killed, the other suffered minor injuries. the motive is unclear at this point. san francisco will be packed over the next two weeks. more than 60 events are happening and some of the highlights include the harley strictley bluegrass festival. the warriors' first game at the new chase center is on saturday against the lakers. and, san francisco fleet week events start on sunday. new at noon, city officials announced their plans to keep all those events safe. kpix5's anne makovec is live with more. anne? >> reporter: that is all hands on deck when it comes to big activities this weekend. and all next week. as fleet week activities ramp up. we are talking about hundreds of thousands of extra people in the city. emergency services are going to be stretched. this is video from some of

these big events in the disaster, there is some anxiety when it comes to these crowds. city, state, and federal military leaders held a meeting. they said it is all about coordination and prioritizing responses from normal daily emergency calls to these large events. >> most of them are, you know, preplanned and predictable so we can preplan our deployment. we don't know what we don't know, something happens that we are not expecting, we have to be prepared for that as well. but the events, we plan for those, we deploy for those. those are a little easier because we know they are coming. >> reporter: they'll have extra firefighters, paramedics and police officers on duty. coast guard patrols on land and on the waterfront. and what they want from you, if you are headed to san francisco for any of these big events, have a reunification plan. just in case you get separated from your group. be vigilant about what you see

california among democratic contenders. massachusetts senator elizabeth warren leads the pack at 23%. in close second, former vice president joe biden at 22%. and, just one percent back, vermont senator bernie sanders. kamala harris is in fourth place at just 8%. the margin of error was 4.9%. new at noon, attorneys for victims of the las vegas mass shooting have reached a settlement with mgm resorts expected to pay between 735 million to $800 million. more than 2500 lawsuits have been filed against the resort where a gunman opened fire into an outdoor concert two years ago this week. 58 people died and hundreds were injured that day. it is the deadliest mass shooting in modern u.s. history. the final settlement amount will depend on the number of plaintiffs who choose to take part. mgm calls this a major step. 18 soldiers are injured after a military exercise went wrong in mississippi.

they were parachuting from c130 transport planes at camp shelby last night. when the army says a gust of wind blew one plane into some trees on a remote part of the base. the army says none of the injuries are life threatening. president trump is signing an executive order calling to strengthen medicare advantage. it's a private insurance option chosen by one-third of seniors on the trip to the villages in florida, the president also criticized democrats' medicare for all plan. under which private health insurance would no longer have a place. medicare for all offers broader benefits and lower costs. the president slammed congress' impeachment inquiry once again today. >> look at the whistleblower's complaint. it is totally inaccurate. the conversation i had was absolutely perfect and most people who read it said the same thing. >> about the same time, the president's former special envoy to ukraine arrived on capitol hill for a closed door

deposition. sources close to him said he resigned last friday in order to testify to congress without having to abide by state department rules. the former special envoy provided congressional staffers with documents ukraine ahead of today's deposition. he is said to have played a central role in connecting ukrainian officials with rudy giuliani. project home, a bay area woman who was one of the longest surviving heart transplant recipients in the country is fighting to stay in her home. cory crow is on 25 different medications to ensure her body doesn't reject the organ. that makes it impossible to hold down a job. she received a section 8 housing voucher from santa clara county and has been living in the enclave apartments for five years. back? june, she found black mold in the cabinets. her doctors worry it could compromise her fragile immune system and she worries if he loses her apartment, she will end up on the streets.
