how some survivors and victims' families might benefit. ♪ good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. the impeachment inquiry into president trump is ramping up. today the inspector general for the intelligence community will testify before the house intelligence committee about the whistleblower complaint against mr. trump. yesterday the former special envoy to ukraine kurt volker met with houses investigators. he provided text messages regarding president trump's phone call with ukraine's president this summer. laura podesta is here in new york. laura, what did these messages say? >> reporter: anne-marie, these messages were between special envoy volker and an adviser to the ukrainian president. in them, volker says president trump would meet with ukraine's president assuming that first the ukrainians dig up information on what went down in

2016. so democrats are saying that's some hard evidence of quid pro quo. in other words, president trump saying to ukraine's leader "you do this for me, and from there we can establish a relationship." already under an impeachment inquiry for pressuring ukraine to investigate a political rival, president trump publicly suggested another foreign country do the same. >> china should start an investigation into the bidens. >> reporter: democrats called it a stunning abuse of power. >> he feels he can do anything with impunity. >> reporter: the houses impeachment inquiry started after a whistleblower raised concern about a july 25th phone call between president trump and ukrainian president zelensky. >> if they were honest about it, they would start a major investigation into the bidens. >> reporter: former special envoy to ukraine kurt volker met with house investigators behind closed doors for ten hours yesterday. he gave them text messages from u.s. diplomats that included conditions for a potential white

house visit for zelensky. and hours before that july 25th phone call, volker wrote to a zelensky aide, "assuming president z convinces trump he will investigate/get to the bottom of what happened in 2016, we will nail down date for visit to washington." republicans and democrats were split on what they saw. >> there was definitely no quid pro quo. >> more and more evidence that the president of the united states was improperly using his office. >> reporter: today the white house is expected to tell house speaker nancy pelosi it will not recognize the impeachment inquiry until it's formalized with a vote on the house floor. so we're hearing the white house is preparing today to formalize their objection to the impeachment inquiry with a written letter, making it seem like until the house holds a vote on a former impeachment inquiry the white house push back on a request for documents. history scholars note there is no specification in the constitution on what does or

does not make an impeachment investigation more formal. one can argue if the house declares an impeachment investigation, they're in the throes of an impeachment. anne-marie? >> one could argue. laura podesta in new york, thank you so much. now to the vaping crisis. prleetor. nearly 1,100 cases of lung illness linked to vaping have been reported in the u.s. that's a jump of 275 cases since last week. there have been at least 19 deaths linked to vaping in 16 states. this all comes as e-cigarette company juul and at least five other companies have been ordered to hand over information about how they market e-cigarettes. dean reynolds reports. >> reporter: amid an urgent investigation that a government health official said was more complex than any ever seen before came word of the 19th person to die from the mysterious illness tied to vaping. the eighth death in the past week. and now a new report from the

mayo clinic says what e-cigarette users are inhaling is burning their lungs with what looks like chemicals as toxic as an industrial accident or worse. >> it bears a lot of resemblance to a chemical fume exposure injury like you might see with mustard gas on the battlefield. >> reporter: dr. brandon larson is a surgical pathologist with the clinic. he examined lung samples in 17 patients with the illness. >> those patients who survive and recover in the short therm may have long-term consequences from this. >> reporter: yet the best medical minds are still unable to pinpoint the cause of the illness that has vaping as its common denominator. some patients in larson's study vaped only nicotine, while more inhaled thc, the active ingredient in marijuana. the cdc said the amount of vaping illness has not peaked. in wisconsin, 16-year-old logan cron, freshly out of intensive care, spoke about his downward spiral from vaping.

>> high lungs kept filling one fluids and became so severely inflamed that i couldn't breathe on my own. i came very close to dying. >> reporter: law enforcement has been seizing more and more elicit vaping products. the black market is lucrative business. in recent months, prosecutors in milwaukee charged one alleged dealer claiming he and two others were making up to $2 million a month selling thc cartridges on the street. >> that was dean reynolds reporting. investigators are looking closely at street purchases to try and figure out just what's in the bootlegged vapes chemical mixtures and possible link to the adverse effects of vaping. a legal settlement has been reached in the deadliest mass shooting in modern u.s. history. mgm resorts international has agreed to pay up to $800 million to victims of the las vegas shooting in 2017. danya bacchus has details. this settlement will provide

fair compensation for thousands of victims and their family. >> reporter: the settlement covers about 4,400 victims and their families, people like 30-year-old chelsea romo. >> my life's forever changed -- >> reporter: the single mom was shot in the face. she lost her left eye and see has endured multiple surgeries to repair her right eye. >> i cover it with my bangs. my whole cheek, my eyebrow, all of this is all -- it's all met am, all plates, screws. i still have shrapnel through my forehead. i have it throughout my brain. >> reporter: while romo says the settlement will help her live more at ease, the trauma never leaves. >> i'm always on high, high alert. >> reporter: 58 people died. hundreds of others were injured when gunman stephen paddock opened fire from his hotel room on the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay hotel. paddock checked in with several weapons. romo's attorney hopes the settlement is a wake-up m and o security.

>> all the bells and whistles. protect all the patrons of their hotel so this will never happen again. >> reporter: the settlement is not an admission of any guilt on mgm's part. the company's ceo said in a statement its goal was to resolve the lawsuit so the community, the victims and their families, can move forward in the healing process. danya bacchus, cbs news. new details are emerging about a deadly crash involving a world war ii-era bomber. all of the victims have now been identified. seven people including the pilot and co-pilot were killed when the plane crashed in connecticut on wednesday. the plane crashed and burned after experiencing mechanical trouble. the ntsb will look into reports that work was being done on one or two of the engines prior to takeoff. six people survived that crash. a fourth parent has been given prison time for their role in the college admissions scandal. gordon caplan will spend one nth bend bars for scheming to boost his daughter's a.c.t.

so-called aura storms he has seen in two years. the phenomena is the result of collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the earth's atmosphere. back home, the nation's first flu death of the season is being reported. actor james franco faces a class-action lawsuit. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "los angeles times" reports two actresses are suing actor james franco, his business partners, and his now-defunct acting and filmmaking school for alleged sexual exploitation. the former students say franco intimidated women into performing explicit sex scenes on camera and then stockpiling the footage. they also claim that franco sought to create a pipeline of young women who were subjected to his sexual and financial exploitation. the actor's attorney says the claims are ill informed and have already been debunked. "people" says the country's first flu death of the season has been reported in new mexico. state health officials say a

90-year-old woman from the albuquerque area died. last year there were more than 61,000 flu deaths in the u.s. it was also the longest flu season in a decade lasting from november to april. the cdc recommends that people get a flu vaccine by the end of october if it is to be the most effective. and the "washington post" reports president trump attacked democrats' health care plans and pledged to protect medicare during a speech to florida retirees. yesterday, mr. trump visited florida's largest retirement community where he signed an executive order expanding medicare's private insurance options. he told the senior citizens that, quote, maniac democrats would rip away their health care and decimate their retirement accounts. he also criticized democratic presidential candidates supporting medicare for all. >> they may go by different names, whether it's single payer or the so-called public option. they want to raid medicare to fund a thing called socialism. any socialists in the room?

summit in washington, d.c. it will focus on warrant-proof encryption and its impacts on child exploitation cases. this comes as the department presses facebook to change its plan to fully encrypt messages on its services including what's app and messenger. the department wants to ensure law enforcement has access to conversations when given permission by a court. facebook says while it respects the needs of the law enforcement offices, its goal is to protect users from unwanted snooping. and instagram has released a new messaging app. the app is called threads and shares photos and videos with friends. it's raising privacy concerns because it invites constant sharing of users' location, status, and other data. for the first time in five years, mcdonald's announced a new seasonal beverage, the new cinnamon cookie latte. it will be cinnamon-flavored hot
