good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin this morning with the democratic presidential debate where for the first time senator elndtook center stage last night in westerville, ohio, just outside of columbus. warren who's rising in theol faced repeated criticism from her democratic rivals. the candidates agreed on one thing -- they supported the impeachment inquiry into president trump. danya bacchus is in westerville. what were the biggest takeaways from the debate? >> reporter: anne-marie, the three-hour debate played out as expected with the focus on topics of health care, joe biden's son, impeachment, and syria. last night's debate started with one thing all 12 candidates agreed upon -- >> the impeachment must go forward. >> donald trump needs to be held accountable -- >> reporter: former vice president joe biden defended

himself and his son from president trump's insistence they be investigated by foreign countries. >> he's going after me because he knows if i get the nomination, i will beat him like rnnaeporter: the debate then elizabeth warren who's been rising in the polls. >> the difference between a plan and a pipe dream is something that you can actually get done. >> rr:for her medicare-for-all . >> will you raise taxes on the middle class for -- to pay for it, yes or no? >> so i have made clear what my principles are here. >> yes or no question that didn't get a yes or no answer. >> reporter: but said she's the best candidate for the general election. >> i say i will out-work, out-organize, and outlast anyone, and that includes donald trump, mike pence, or whoever the republicans get stuck with. >> reporter: with 12 people on stage here in ohio, last night's debate was the largest in modern history. it also featured three candidates over the age of 70.

>> we know that the most unhealthy person running for the presidency in 2020 is donald trump. >> reporter: 78-year-old vermont senator bernie sanders said he's mounting a vigorous campaign despite a heart attack two weeks ago. >> i want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. i'm happy to be back with you this evening. >> reporter: and it's elizabeth warren that political pundits say stood out tonight. they say the senator who is now considered a front runner, weathered the attacks against her by other candidates, and after this debate, senator bernie sanders is expected to be formally endorsed by representatitives alexandria ocasio-cortez and ilhan omar. >> danya bacchus in westerville, ohio. thank you. so on capitol hill today the impeachment inquiry into president trump continues to move forward. michael mckinley is scheduled to testify before house investigators. he was a former top aide to

secretary of state mike pompeo and resigned from the state department last week. meanwhile, house speaker nancy pelosi says she's not planning authorize an impeachment inquiry. she says there's no requirement for a vote, but the decision could be reassessed. republicans have described the inquiry as illegitimate without one. >> the impeachment cocktail that is adam schiff's favorite drink to get america drunk on these days has three main ingredients -- it's about cherry picking leaks, withholding key facts, and outright lying. >> tomorrow gordon sondland, u.s. ambassador to the e.u., is expected to testify before lawmakers in the impeachment investigation. and now to the fighting in syria. vice president mike pence and secretary of state mike pompeo head to turkey today with hopes of negotiating a cease-fire. turkish president erdogan says that he told president trump he'll never declare a cease-fire, and he is not

worried about u.s. sanctions. meanwhile, russian president vladimir putin has invited erdogan to visit russia. charlie d'agata explains the new role russia is playing in the war zone. >> reporter: with u.s. forces pulling back from the battlefield, russian troops have swept in to fill the power vacuum. those are russian flags flying on military vehicles right beside syrian regime flags near the city of manbij. a flashpoint near the turkish border where u.s. troops were present just days ago. video posted by russian tv channels showed what appeared to be the abandon abandon u.s. er living spaces, half-eaten food, stocked refrigerators -- >> coca-cola -- >> reporter: personal belongings suggesting they left in a hurry. russian military police have deployed to keep forces

representatives is showing support for the pro-democracy protesters in hong kong. yesterday it passed three bills -- one condemns china's intrusions into hong kong's affairs. yesterday hundreds of people gathered in hong kong to show support for houston rockets general manager daryl morey. earlier this month, he tweeted his support for demonstrators in hong kong. that tweet drew criticism from china and the nba. and this week lebron james weighed in criticizing morey for the tweet and its happy about that. they burned a replica of lebron's jersey while holding signs to support morey. violent clashes erupted for a second night in barcelona between police and protesters. [ chants ] protesters are angry about the conviction of cataland separatist leaders. monday, leaders were jailed after being found guilty of crimes against the government. some demonstrations have turned

violent. spain has launched an investigation into an activist group organizing the protests. an explosion caused a massive fire at a fuel storage facility in the bay area in california. it happened yesterday at newstar energy in crockett, about 30 miles northeast of downtown san francisco. thick plumes of black smoke and flames could be seen for miles. about 12,000 people were ordered to stay inside because of concerns about hazardous particles in the air. the fire burned for nearly eight hours before firefighters contained it, and the cause of the explosion is under investigation. a powerful fall nor'easter is threatening millions of americans from the mid-atlantic to new england. forecasters say torrential rain is expected to soak the northeast over the next 24 to 48 hours. that could prompt flash flooding in many areas. strong winds could also down trees and cause widespread power outages. the heaviest rain is expected parts of new england.e

mucinex cold and flu all-in-one. close call for a wyoming sheriff's deputy. the deputy was conducting a traffic stop last week when a passing car hit a patch of black ice and spun out of control. the deputy had to jump out of the way. the driver of the car gained control without hitting anything. reported to prison, and a potential settlement involving opioid distributors. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "wall street journal" reports three major drug distributors are in talks to pay $18 billion to settle lawsuits

blaming them for fueling the opioid crisis. mckessen amerisource, bergen, and cardinal health are among companies scheduled to go to trial next week in cleveland federal court. now state and local governments across the country have filed more than 2,000 lawsuits alleging drug companies contributed to the widespread the "los angeles times" says "desperate housewives" star felicity huffman reported to federal prison. she's serving a two-week sense for her role in the college admissions scandal. the emmy award-winning actress pleaded guilty to fraud and conspiracy for paying $15,000 to have a procter correct her daughter's s.a.t. answers. huffman will serve her time at a low-security prison for women in northern california. precguhat she should have been sentenced to 30 days, but a federal judge gave her 14 days. >> you don't see a lot of federal sentencing that is only a handful of days.

it's a very rare thing to see -- only in a federal misdemeanor which is -- which are very rare -- would you see a sentence like this. so it's as light as i've seen. >> huffman must also perform 250 hours of community service and pay a $30,000 fine. and the "washington post" reports the washington nationals are headed to their very first world series after sweeping the st. louis cardinals in the national league championship series. the champagne was flowing in the nationals' clubhouse after they beat the cardinals last night 7-4. washington scored all of their runs in the first inning. it was a stunning turnaround for the nationals. they had a 19-31 record in may when there was talk of firing manager davey martinez. >> right now, right now it's -- i feel like i'm on cloud 47. i'm past cloud nine. it's the first time a team from washington will play in the world series in 86 years.

well, on the earnings calendar i in focus. bank of america, bank of new york, pnc, u.s. bancorp, set to release quarterly results. also reporting aries in netflix and ibm. stocks rallied yesterday led by shares of major banks. the dow soared 237 points, closing above 27,000 for the first time in nearly a month. the s&p 500 gained 29, and the nasdaq jumped 100 points. mgm resorts tesino i being sold to treasure island for $825 million. mgm resorts has also entered into a lease-back partnership with blackstone for the bellagio. that property is valued at more than $4 billion. mgm resorts is calling the deal a landmark transaction for the gaming and entertainment industry. a michigan judge is blocking thstate'o-ekan on avored e-cigtes.adulreturno

our top stories this morning -- democratic candidates faced off last night during a debate in ohio. elizabeth warren repeatedly came under attack about the cost ca a signature tax plan. joe biden also faced tough questions about his son, hunter, and his connection to ukraine. and house speaker nancy pelosi says she's not planning a full house v authorize the impeachment inquiry. she says the vote is not required. but the decision will be reassessed. republicans have described impeachment investigations as illegitimate without the vote. in fort worth, texas, new information has surfaced in the shooting death of a black woman inside her own home by a white police officer. omar villafranca reports.
