good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters it's good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we're going to begin with a violent shoot-out in mexico after the brief capture of one of the sons of drug kingpin joaquin "el chapo" guzman. [ gunfire ] the violence broke out last night in the city of cullian, northwest of mexico city. police captured video of lopez inside a home. he is wanted in the u.s. on drug trafficking charges. mexico.s allegedly among the es authories y deca under intense fire from heavily armed gunmen surrounding the house. police decided to release him to protect lives. earlier this year, you may

recall lopez's father, joaquin "el chapo" guzman, was found guilty of drug trafficking and money laundering charges. he was sentenced to life in prison. back at home now, there was an explosive admission by a top white house official in the impeachment inquiry into president trump. yesterday acting chief of ratio military aid to ukraine in exchange for an investigation into the 2016 presidential election. mulvaney later tried to walk back his comments, denying that there was a quid pro quo. laura podesta is here in new york. how are democrats responding to this news? >> reporter: anne-marie, with sharp criticism. they say mulvaney's words yesterday are an admission of bad behavior by the president, that he bribed a foreign nation. and cbs news has learned even mulvaney's comments have left the president's lawyers mystified and blind sided. >> get over it. there's going to be political influence in foreign policy.

far and away the best physical facility for the meeting. >> reporter: amid accusations of conflict, acting chief of staff mick mulvaney said hosting the summit at the trump-owned doral resort was not illegal or inappropriate because the president will not reap a profit. >> doing this at cost. as a result, it's been dramatically cheaper to do it at doral. >> reporter: the white house narrowed its final list to four sites including two locations in utah and another in hawaii. mulvaney said it was mr. trump who opoldi the g7 at his club. senior officials said mr. trump took a very personal interest in doral hosting the summit. mr. trump said this in august -- >> not about me, it's about getting the right location. i think it's very important. >> reporter: business at doral is struggling, according to the "washington post."

doral's profits dropped nearly 70% between 2015 and 2017. rooms range from $134 to $878 per night. doral tends to attract fewer guests in june, meaning the summit could compensate for a seasonal lag in revenue. >> it's publicity that you couldn't pay for. >> reporter: the white house move comes amid charges from president trump that joe biden's son profited from his father's office by serving on the board of a ukrainian energy company. >> if there's one difference that you look at between the trump family and the biden family, the trump family made their movie before they went into politics. >> reporter: the constitution prohibits officeholders from accepting any present or emolument from a foreign state or payments from the federal government. >> he continues to -- to own that company and to benefit from it. there's no question that the federal government is going to be paying him a lot of money which is against the constitution. >> reporter: the president's legal team was not consulted about this public briefing announcing doral as the summit site and would have much

preferred a simple paper statement, fearing the inevitable questions the acting chief of staff would get about ukraine. speaking for himself, mulvaney, the acting chief of staff, said president trump told him he personally, meaning mr. trump, will take the heat for doral, his club, winning the g7 summit sweepstakes. cbs news, the white house. now on syria. despite an agreement by turkey to temporarily halt the fighting, gunfire reportedly broke out overnight. machine gun fire was heard in the area, and smoke was reportedly seen rising from one part of the syrian town. turkey launched an offensive in northeast syria after president trump withdrew u.s. forces from the region. lawmakers who criticized the decision are expressing optimism over the deal. nikole killion reports. this is an incredible outcome -- >> reporter: in texas, president trump praised the vice president and secretary of state after they announced an agreement with turkish president erdogan to

halt fighting in northern syria. >> turkish side will pause operation peace spring in orders to allow for the withdrawal of ypg forces from the safe zone for ur >> reporter: the deal also includes a plan for the u.s. and turkey to coordinate on detention of isis prisoners. turkish officials point out their forces will remain in the region and control the establishment of a safe zone. vice president mike pence and secretary pompeo left turkey soon after the hours' long negotiations were completed. if the cease-fire holds, the trump administration has agreed not to impose sanctions or raise steel tariffs on turkey. president trump called for the withdrawal of u.s. troops from northern syria over a week ago which led to the invasion of turkish forces. the president called the love. >> when those guns start shooting, they tend to do things. >> reporter: the move received a flurry of bipartisan criticism from lawmakers with the house

♪ history is set to be made today in space. nasa astronauts christina koch and jessica meir are scheduled to conduct the first all-female space walk. they will venture outside the space station to fix a broken battery charger. an all-female space walk was planned for earlier this year but had to be canceled because the right-sized space suit was not available. there's new fallout in the nba china controversy, and the battle over funding the president's border wall. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "washington post" reports the senate failed to block president trump from redirecting money from the military budget to help pay for the border wall. mr. trump had declared a national emergency to move $3.6 billion from the pentagon's budget. nullify his declaration of a

national emergency. the president vetoed that. and yesterday the senate attempted to overturn that veto but fell short of the two-thirds needed. it included ten republicans voting with the democrats. "the chicago tribune" says city teachers will be on strike for a second day today. [ chants ] about 25,000 teachers union members walked off the job yesterday. they walked in picket lines outside hundreds of schools and in front of the headquarters for chicago public schools. classes for more than 300,000 students are canceled again today. the issues include pay, class size, and providing additional resources. >> it shouldn't take 20,000 people in the street to get a serious proposal. >> chicago mayor lori lightfoot said the city is offering what she called a historic package on the main issues. and "usa today" reports nba commissioner adam silver says
