mandatory evacuations. the maria fire is burning north osorning. roughly 1,800 structures are threatened. about 7,500 people were ordered to evacuate. in san bernardino, one man frantically tried to get his neighbor out of the house to escape the fires. >> henry? henry, the hill's on fire! come on. get out. get out of here. >> all right. >> firefighters are battling more than a half dozen wildfires across california. as santa ana winds subside, firefighters hope to gain an upper hand. chris martinez reports from san bernardino. >> reporter: evacuation orders have been lifted in san bernardino, and residents there are getting a firsthand look at the damage.

>> we just -- all we could think was how lucky we were and how ms -- how does it miss one house? >> reporter: firefighters stamped out the last hot spots in the wreckage of this house. it was one of six homes destroyed when flames raced down the hillside here. residents who stayed through the night fought a nightmarish scene of smoke and flames. >> i got my kids out and the cars the only ones that stayed here. we came back. and we're fighting with the garden hoses, all the neighbors' houses. it was a crazy night. >> reporter: the latest fires erupted in this heavy populated area east of los angeles forcing more than 1,000 people to evacuate. and nearby harupa valley, fires swept through several homes and this nature center. the enemy here has been the powerful santa ana winds that can turn a small brush fire into an inferno. forecasters say those winds are finally moving out. the shifting weather will help

firefighters keep the upper hand and in northern california, crews are finally taking control of fires that have destroyed at least 140 homes in sonoma county. for now, though, california utility companies continue to cut power to avoid sparking more fires. chris martinez, cbs news, san bernardino, california. in the east, there was severe weather. rare tornado watches and warnings were issued in the mid-atlantic and northeast. they have been lifted. in the d.c. area, strong storms caused flash flooding, downed trees, and knocked out power to thousands. meanwhile, a cold front is set to grip much of the u.s. freeze warnings are ed f the southwest to the ohio valley. record cold is expected in the south. in the new york city area, temperatures dropped more than public testimony could begin as early as next week in the impeachment inquiry into president trump.

yesterday the house voted to formalized the investigation. the resolution passed along party lines, a move that's oes mode u.s. history. investigators are looking into whether president trump withheld military aid from ukraine to put pressure on ukraine to investigate joe biden. laura podesta is in new york. laura, how's the white house responding to the vote? >> reporter: the white house issued a blistering response to the vote, blasting the proceedings as a sham and calling democrats, quote, unhinged. meanwhile, president trump said in an interview with the "washington examiner" that he's considering reading the summary transcript of his phone call with the president of ukraine to the american people. his version of a fireside chat but on live television. >> the yeas are 232 -- >> reporter: all but two house democrats voted for a rules package guiding the next steps in the impeachment inquiry. the investigation's hearings will go public possibly

the pilot was trying to make an emergency landing on a highway in ocala yesterday. an suv.ne ended up crashing into the two people on board the plane died. the driver of the suv was injured. the faa and the ntsb are investigating. the chicago teachers strike is over. for the first time in nearly two weeks, students will return to class this morning. teachers had been on strike since october 17th, more than 300,000 students were affected. the tentative contract agreement includes a raise of 16% over five years and additional raises based on teacher seniority. the mayor addressed the strike after the agreement was reached. in the spirit ofscsion, too time to get there. but i think there is the right thing ultimately for our city. and i'm glad that this phase is over. >> chicago public schools will make up five schooldays lost to the teacher strike. coming up on the "morning news," halloween violence in

it was a violent halloween in hong kong. police fired teargas to break up anti-government protesters wearing masks who mixed in with people in costume celebrating halloween. it happened last night in a well-known party district filled with bars and stores. it's the first time that area has been targeted by protesters. police raised banners warning the crowd to disperse. a massive pro-democracy demonstration is scheduled for tomorrow. an indiana woman was strangled by a python, and tragedy on halloween. those are some of the headli on the "morning newsstand." the cbs chicago station reports that a 7-year-old girl out trick-or-treating with her family was shot.

[ gunshots ] gunshots sent trick-or-treaters running last night. the little girl, dressed in a bumblebee costume, was hit by two bullets in the upper chest area. she is in critical condition. police say that some men were chasing a 31-year-old man and started shooting. that man was shot in the hand. authorities say that the girl has no relationship with the man who was shot. >> it's a 7-year-old child out here with her family trick-or-treating. just like anybody else. it shouldn't happen anymore. it shouldn't happen in the city. >> police say the men who were shooting ran away, and no one has been arrested. "the indianapolis star" says a woman was found dead in an indiana home with an eight-foot python wrapped around her neck. the 36-year-old woman was found unresponsive wednesday night on the floor of the home in the town of oxford. police say there were 140 snakes in the house. all but one were in cases.

property records reportedly show that the home is owned by the benton county sheriff who actually lives next door. police say he discovered the woman's body. investigators say that the woman owned about 20 of the snakes. the rest belonged to the sheriff. >> it appears that she got the snake out and was -- whatever people do with snakes -- and wocae eas scheduled for today. and "reuters" says safety is the priority at this weekend's breeder's cup championships at the beleaguered santa anita horse racing track. 36 horses have died at the southern california track since the season began last december. the most recent case involved a horse being euthanized after injuring her leg during a race on sunday. some horse trainers say they're feeling uneasy even though the track has implemented changes. they include banning the use of race-day medications that could to breakdowns. still to come, addicted to

wall street thursday led by a decline in big banks. the dow dropped 140 points. the s&p 500 lost 9, and the nasdaq fell 11 points. australian airline quantas said this morning it has grounded three of its boeing 737 ng plans after cracks were found. several airlines have been inspecting their 737-ng planes after boeing revealed an area near the wing may be prone to cracking. southwest airlines has also taken three of its planes out of service after performing its inspections. last month u.s. regulators ordered checks of all 737-ng planes which had flown more than 30,000 flights. parents, take note, a new study found kids are spending more time looking at screens. according to new data from common sense media, 8 to 12-year-olds spend four hours and 44 minutes looking at screens every day on average. that's compared to teens who spend seven hours and 22 minutes per day.

our top stories this morning -- a new fire has erupted in southern california. the maria fire is burning near santa paola north of los angeles. roughly 1,800 structures are threatened. about 7,500 people have been ordered to evacuate. so far 4,000 acres have burned, and the fire is 0% contained. public testimony could begin as early as next week in the impeachment inquiry into president trump. yesterday the house voted along party lines to formalize the inquiry. it's a move that's only happened three other times in modern u.s. history. president trump responded within minutes of the vote calling it a, quote, witch-hunt. the 1968 olympics was one of the most iconic moments in sports history. now 51 years later, the americans who staged that
