trump lashed out at williams on twitter calling her a never-trumper and telling her to read the transcrypt of his call. this is the second time the president has tweeted directly at a witness in the impeachment inquiry, something that has eyebrows raised on both sides of the aisle, o omar. >> villafranca: thank you. the impeachment inquiry continues, neck week cbs news will have special coverage on the tuesday, wednesday and thursday. this we can ten democrats take the stage in the fifth presidential debate. the latest cbs new battleground tracker has a snap shot of the race in early states. joe biden leads the field at 29 percent. elizabeth warren is right behind. bern ye sanders and pete buttigieg follow. cbs news elections and survey director anthony salvanto is here to break it all down. anthony, joe biden has bounced back. what is behind that? >> hi, omar. he has bounced back, elizabeth warren was leading that field in our last poll last month. what has happened is that warren

has faced some criticism from bied enand other democrats saying that her plans might be too liberal for a general election. too liberal to boat president trump. democrats are worried about that. we find that about a third of democrats say that if her policies, very few of them say that about joe biden and of course electability remains a key concern for that democratic base. >> mayor pete is at 9 percent in wider polls but he's making gains in iowa. why is he making those gains? >> well, it's sort of the classic play using the ground game, getting out there. we know he is campaigning hard in iowa, also in new hampshire and we have seen him now rise, basically to the top of the field there in iowa, also macking gains now in double digits in new hampshire, though liz bit warren still lead there. >> villafranca: anthony salvanto, thank you very much. >> thank you. >> villafranca: former new york city mayor michael bloomberg who could soon join the democratic race made a surprising admission, speak

child, kelsey bar rhett, at nikki battiste report, testimony wrapped up with a bombshell. >> nearly a year after kelsey berreth disappeared, seven women and five men are set to decide the faith of her fiance patrick frazee. prosecutors call the frazee a cold, calculate, man i latif killer who never testified on his own behalf. the star witness against frazee was his secret girlfriend, an idaho nurse named krystal lee. she told authorities he tried to get her to kill berreth three different times and when she didn't, he did she testified he told her he beat his fiance to death with a baseball bat on thanksgiving day and that berreth's last words were please, stop. after the murder, lee says frazee called her and said she had a mess to clean up. lee claims she drove from idaho to colorado and cleaned up the crime scene. because frazee told her to, and she feared for her life.

lee has also admitted she destroyed berreth's cell phone, her keysnd a gun. all to help frazee cover his tracks. in exchange for her testimony lee agreed to plead guilty to evidence tampering. a few days after thanks gifing, lee says she watched as frazee burned a black tote box that he told her contained bar rhett's body and the baseball bat, berreth's body has never been found. last week a formter fellow prisoner testified how he received 16 notes from frazee with instructions to kill several of the witnesses testifying against him. including lee and berreth's mother. he said frazee wrote they all need to disappear, unseen until after the trial. closing arguments will begin here tomorrow morning. if convicted patrick frazee faces life in prison. krystal lee will be sentenced after frazee's case wraps up and she faces a maximum of three years in prison. >> villafranca: nikki, thank

you very much. louisiana governor john bel edwards is celebrating his re-election. edwards captured 51% of the vote in a runoff last night beating the republican challenger heavily supported by president trump. ed wardz is the deep south's only democratic governor. >> ahead on the cbs weekend news, new warnings about the risk of laisessic-- lasik eye surgery. the french chateau attracting crowds of tourists interested in wine and war. and some velt veterans with ptsd are feeling by giving injured sea lions a helping hand.

>> villafranca: for more than two decades now lasik eye surgery has helped improve vision and free patients of eyeglasses and contacts. but now some doctors say the procedure should be stopped. dr. tara narula has a closer look. >> it say def taition i can't even explain. >> abraham rutner said lasik surgery damaged his vision and nearly ruined his life.

>> so what happened after the surgery. >> things appeared double, around the lights lights were le having starbursts. >> after months of not being able to drive or do his job. the brooklyn electrician finally found help in miami. >> his cornia is very distorted vuflt his lasik surgery. >> where optometrist edward boshnick fitted him with special contact lenses. boshnick estimates he has treat treated thousands of people with lasik complications. paula cofer had surgery 19 years ago. >> and from day one my vision was an absolute trainwreck and it still is today. >> she started a lasik complications support group on facebook and quickly found she was not alone. >> you really have to understand you are risking your only pair of eyes. >> how are you feeling perfect. >> since 1998 an estimated 20 million lasik procedures have been performed and according to an fda patient survey more than 95% of patients were satisfied

with their vision after surgery. >> still the fda's own website is filled with stories of serious complications. patients report relentless eye pain, diziness, detached retinas and tell the agency lasik ended my life. and this procedure needs to stop. >> essentially we ignored the data on vision distortions that persisted for years. >> morris waxler is a retiered fda advisor who voted to approve lasik. he now says that vote was a mistake. >> i re-examined the documentation and i said wow, this is not good. >> waxler says his own analysis of industry data shows complication rates between 10 and 30%. in 2011 competitioned the fda to issue a volume tear recall of lasik. three years later the agency denied that request and now tells cbs news it quote has nt found any new safety concerns associated with lasik devices.

>> do you think that this should be taken off the market? >> absolutely. there is nothing wrong with a person's eyes who goes to guess lasik, they can go and get a pair of glasses. >> you can see light is going to get sharp err and sharper. >> doctors who perform lasik surgery say risks can be minimized with presurgical screening. >> the most important thing is knowing who to operate on and who not to operate on. and there are people who really should not have this procedure. >> app ra ham rutner now believes he was never a good candidate. >> i was blaming myself, why in the world did i go in to it. rutner estimates his vision is now about 90% improved. he tolerates the discomfort of hard contact lenses, but wishes he had known more before he had lasik. >> what would you tell someone who came to you and said they were considering having lasik done. >> think it over, and if it is your eyes, st not something that you can rectify later. >> dr. tara narula reporting. for more on the risks to consider about lasik, go to our

>> villafranca: to hong kong where police stormed a university held by protestors in an all-nightstandoff. police moved in after protestors set fire to the school's main entrance. earlier students used bows and arrows in battles with police. one officer was hit in the leg. terry o'neill known as the photographer of the swinging '60s has died in britan. he was 81. one of o'neill's earliest assignments, this black and white portrait of an up and coming band from liverpool, the beatles. he company tawred this poolside image of faye dunaway after she won an oscar in 1977. they married six years later. sirlton john a frequent subject, he tweeted a tribute calling o'neill both brilliant and funny. >> and at the national zoo st bye bye bei bei, there will be

sea lions hurt in the wild.esul. here's carter evans. >> feeding time can create a frenzy. >> all of these animals were rescued along orange county's coastline and brought here to the pacific marine mammal center. some sea lions are sick, some injured. >> put that right up here. >> crinkle came to us with a broken flipper. >> colby hollabaugh a former marine leads the sea lions for service members course, he has been diagnosed with ptsd and that's helped him empathize with wounded animals like this sea lion named zion. >> zion was very badly entangled and pinned down against a buoy. i saw a lot of me in zion, zion thought he was doing just fine, he was going to figure it all out on his own, right, it is not until someone helps you that you realize how badly you needed the help. >> look at him go. >> veterans lisa stein and erika

die talt efi searched found the program when searching for help for ptsd. you are nervous and proud, you have nightmares, you can't talk to anybody. st at like like these animals they have no voice. >> the marine animal center has rescued more than 180 animal this year and some require surgery. >> i'm going to clamp. >> wet van naomi prazak watched as a critically ill sale was tube fed, it triggered memories. >> everybody was scared. for me it was my emotions, i couldn't control my emotions at all and i felt like i was really weak. >> but each found strength working alongside other veterans and bonds form just like the sea lion. >> it was life changing. >> what is it about putting vetted rans together. >> it seems to create something special. they can feel like a team again and they can feel like they're doing something positive. >> that was so much fun. >> it was incredible. >> so sweet. >> they can look in their eyes and they can understand that the

times. she said the last three encounters ended with the man inappropriately touching her. according to police reports obtained by the paper, the girl's father then brought her back to the same spots to record the man's incriminating action as on video. and while they kept in touch via ear buds. once they got the video he needed, he turned it over to the police. officers arrested the 76-year- old on tuesday. he's being held on $3 million bail. charged with lewd acts with a child under 14. but the paper reports state prosecutors are also exploring ges against the girl's father. santa clara county da's office told us in a statement, "we have recused ourselves on the handling of any filing decisions and the prosecution of any matters related to this situation. we cannot answer any case quess
