57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with the second mass shooting in california in a week. last night ten people were shot at a back yard football party. four were killed. the shooting happened in fresno, north of los angeles. the shooter or shooters are still on the loose. authorities say the shooting targeted a gathering of family and friends watching football. six other people were wounded and are expected to survive. detectives are searching the area for witnesses and possible security camera footage. authorities warned it could have been worse. >> thank god that no kids were hurt because there were several kids and females that were in attendance at this party. >> police say the victims were agents from the u.s. bureau of alcohol, tobacco, firearms, and explosives in san francisco are assisting in the investigation. this comes on the heels of a shooting last week that killed

two students. a standoff at a hong kong university campus has led to fiery clashes overnight between police and protesters. large fires broke out as protesters threw bombs from behind barricades. at least one officer was hit in the leg with an arrow yesterday. police had warned that they could use live ammunition if protesters did not stop attacking. they used teargas and water cannons on subdue the crowd. it was also announced all kindergarten and special schools will be closed for the rest of the week. the education bureau says that the closures are necessary because of unpredictable road conditions. hong kong has been rocked by anti-government protests for more than five months. and back home, the impeachent inquiry into president trump intensifies with eight key witnesses set to testify.

yesterday, house speaker nancy pelosi told margaret brennan on "face the nation" that mr. trump is welcome to appear before house lawmakers to answer questions. laura podesta is here in new york. what has been the president's reaction to all of this so far? >> reporter: anne-marie, the president is doubling down on his strategy of suggesting that most of the witnesses in the hearings have some type of political bias. he also claims the entire process is stacked against him and is nothing more than, quote, a witch-hunt. president trump continues to dismiss the impeachment inquiry as a politically motivated hoax. on sunday the president tweeted, "the crazed do-nothing democrats are turning impeachment into a routine partisan weapon. that is very bad for our country and not what the founders had in mind." >> the president could come before the committee and speak all the truth that he want. >> reporter: on "face the nation," house speaker nancy pelosi invited the president to testify about his administration's dealings with ukraine.

>> if he has information that is exculpatory, that means ex, taking away, culpa, blame, we look forward to seeing it. >> reporter: supporters say mr. trump is being asked to prove a negative. >> the president's defense is those things didn't happen. and it's not just the president's word, president zelensky said the aid wasn't condition and there was no pressure. >> reporter: open hearings will resume on tuesday with eight witnesses slated to appear over three days. the list include gordon sondland. preef preefls. >> he has to decide whether his primary loyalty is to america or whether his primary loyalty is to the president of the united states. >> reporter: speaker pelosi says there may be more witness interviews during the week of thanksgiving. another round of public hearings could follow before the house votes on whether to impeach. if the articles of impeachment

in atlanta on wednesday. only ten candidates will take the stage. down two from last month's debate. in his first comments since president trump pardoned two army officers accused of war crimes in afghanistan, defense secretary mark esper said he has great faith in the military justice system. his remarks come days after mr. trump pardoned two service members including one convicted of murder for ordering his soldiers to shoot three afghan civilians. two were killed. mr. trump restored the rank of a navy s.e.a.l. who posed with a dead isis fighter in iraq. critics say the pardons would undermine military justice. prince andrew is facing backlash following an interview where he talked about his relationship with convicted sex offender jeffrey epstein. in a rare interview with bbc news night, andrew rebutts that

first time ever, rallying some 222 points. the s&p 500 added 23, and the nasdaq jumped 61 points. thfaa is reportedly considering ways to alter how it certifies aircraft in the wake of two crashes involving boeing 737 max jets. according to the "wall street journal," faa administrator steven dixon suggested the possibility of the agency being involved in the design of new planes. he suggested the faa and boeing should have more communication during the development of new jets. the faa grounded boeing's 737 max fleet in march following two deadly clashes overseas. the ceo of fedex has challenged the publisher of "the new york times" to a public debate. the move comes after the "times" reported fedex paid zero dollars in federal taxes in 2018. the report said fedex saved more than $1.5 million after the gop tax reform plan passed in 2017.
