good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with the next round of hearings in the impeachment inquiry into president trump. this as news surfaces of a last-minute witness that will now testify publicly this week. four witnesses will be questioned before the public today, including alexander vindman. vindman is a ukraine specialist with the national security council who listened in on president trump's july phone call with ukraine's president. meanwhile, new transcripts from the closed door testimony of david holmes was released overnight. holmes, a ukrainian embassy staffer, testified privately over the weekend. he will testify publicly on thursday. skyler henry is on capitol hill. what was revealed in the latest transcripts? >> reporter: yeah, anne-marie, good morning. david holmes is a career state department official based in the ukraine. transcripts show that he

testified u ukrainian officials were told they weren't guaranteed military aid unless they received certain transactions. the release of the transcript is no surprise as we're a few hours away from the next round of pink -- impeachment inquiry hearings. the impeachment inquiry into trump wraps up with nine witnesses scheduled to testify publicly. lieutenant colonel alexander vindman and aide jennifer williams speak to the house intelligence committee first this morning. >> that was a perfect call -- >> reporter: both were listening in on the president's phone call to ukrainian president zelensky. >> i think you'll hear from all of them that this was a bombshell in the white house. >> reporter: williams and vindman expressed concern about the phone call in their closed door depositions saying it was unusual for president trump to push for political investigations. the president referred to both as never trumpers. >> let's find ten people that hate president trump the most, and let's put them up there.

>> reporter: republicans have so far dismissed previous public testimony as hearsay. >> you didn't listen to president trump's call and president zelensky's call? >> i did not. >> you never spoke with mick mulvaney? >> i ever? never -- you never met the president? >> correct. >> reporter: kurt volker and tim morrison will also speak publicly. volker was one of three amigos, officials who had an irregular channel regarding ukrainian policy. >> it's never too late to tell the truth. never too late to do the right thing. >> reporter: morrison was on the call and told lawmakers he was, quote, not concerned that anything illegal was discussed. now in an interview that aired on "face the nation" sunday, house speaker nancy pelosi invited president trump to testify himself. he tweeted yesterday that he was considering writing a written testimony. anne-marie, back to you. >> i'm not going to hold my breath about that, but you never know. skyler henry on capitol hill. thank you so much. and managing editor norah o'donnell will anchor special reports from washington during today's public hearing and again tomorrrrow and thursday. we expect testimony to begin at 9:00, 8:00 central. you can watch continuing coverage of the hearings on our 24-hour streaming network, cbsn. the u.s. supreme court has temporarily blocked the release of president trump's tax returns. last week an appeals court ruled mr. trump's tax returns and business records must be turned over to the house oversight committee. the house agreed to the temporary stay but must respond to the decision by thursday. the supreme court is scheduled to lead on friday where it could discuss the case further. now to a high-profile murder trial in colorado. a jury has found patrick frazee guilty of killing his fiancee. it took jurors less than four hours to reach a verdict. we have the report. >> reporter: the jury found patrick frazee guilty of first-degree murder for killing his fiancee and then having his

girlfriend help cover it up. >> it's a sad day that all justice can do is hold patrick frazee accountable. we wish kelsey were here today. >> reporter: it took jurors less than a day to make their decision after hearing from 60 witnesses, all of them brought by prosecutors. frazee's defense team called no one to the stand. kelsey berreth was last seen in public nearly a year ago. her body has not been found. during the trial, the prosecution called krystal lee, an idaho woman who was having an affair with frazee, as the star witness. lee testified that frazee told her he beat berreth to death with a baseball bat on thanksgiving day, and asked lee to help him clean up the mess at berreth's town home. lee, a nurse, says a few days after the murder, she watched as frazee burned a black tote bag he said contained berreth's body and the bat. lee also said frazee and berreth's baby daughter was in the home at the time of the killing. >> she was 13 months old.

and unfortunately will never have a memory of her mother. >> reporter: defense attorneys questioned lee's credibility, pointing out she lied before about not knowing frazee and berreth. in exchange for her testimony, lee agreed to plead guilty to evidence tampering. frazee has maintained his innocence. prosecutors did not seek the death penalty. the judge sentenced frazee to life in prison without the possibility of parole. cbs news, los angeles. cbs news has confirmed charges are expected this week, possibly as soon as today, in the death investigation of jeffrey epstein. the charges that include falsifying prison records, are against two correctional officers. those officers were responsible for guarding epstein the night he took his own life. epstein was awaiting trial in a new york city jail on sex abuse charges involving teenage girls. prosecutors gave the two correctional officers an opportunity to plead guilty. both declined the offer. several major charities are

distancing themselves from prince andrew amid growing concerns about his friendship with jeffrey epstein. the news comes on the heels of a new lawsuit against epstein. the alleged victim known as jane doe 15 accuses epstein of sexually abusing her when she was 15 years old. >> after i returned to michigan from zora ranch, i was contacted by one of jeffrey epstein's assistants and invited to the island where i was told prince andrew among others would be a guest. i declined out of fear. >> i have no recollection -- >> in a rare interview with the bbc, prince andrew tried to distance himself from epstein. as mark phillips reports, the prince's answers have only raised more questions. >> reporter: the reviews are in on prince andrew's palace interview. it bombed. the headlines have been scathing. a car crash, toe curling, insane were some of the quotes. if the intent was to draw a line under prince andrew's long association with the convicted

pedophile jeffrey epstein, it's had an opposite effect. why did he say in epstein's house when he went to end the friendship? >> you were staying at the house of a convicted sex offender. >> it was a convenient place to stay. >> reporter: why was there a public health of him with his arm around the then-17-year-old virginia roberts who has accused him of having underage sex with her at an epstein party? >> i don't recollect that photograph ever being taken. >> reporter: and why has he not expressed remorse for his relationship with epstein or for his victims? >> do i regret the fact that he has quite obviously conducted himself in a manner unbecoming, yes. >> unbecoming? he was a sex offender. >> yeah. i'm sorry, i'm being polite. >> reporter: and did the queen approve the interview? >> he didn't say to me directly that that was the queen. but it's hard to think of who else is higher up whose approval he would need.

heavily oorm armed fort worth officers busted down the doors in may. that's where authorities say michael webb took the young girl after kidnapping her while she was out walking with her mother. the girl emerged from a laundry basket in the room after webb was handcuffed. he was sentenced to life in prison for kidnapping the girl. a puzzling anti-meth being criticized, and authorities are searching for clues into why a gunman opened the "morning newsstand." "the oklahoman" reports very few details have surfaced in a deadly shooting at a walmart parking lot. authorities say a man and a woman were gunned down outside the store in duncan yesterday. they say the suspect then shot and killed himself. witnesses told police the gunman fired several rounds into the victim's front car windshield. >> happened in the parking lot and appears to be an isolated incident between the three people who were involved. >> the police chief said that he

believes the three people knew each other but did not speculate on what kind of relationship they had. there's no word on a motive. "the san francisco chronicle" reports a search is on for two people who opened fire on a family. police say it happened during a back yard party in fresno on sunday. four men were killed and six others were injured as they got together to watch a football game. authorities believe the shooting intentionally targeted members of the city's ethnic group from southeast asia. >> it appears that this incident was a targeted act of violence against this residence. possibly some people at this party were involved in a disturbance earlier in week. >> the police chief said it's unclear if the two incidents were connected. and the "sioux falls argus leader" says south dakota is catching social media backlash after a new slogan to curb meth use. the governor launched the anti-meth campaign yesterday

♪ ♪ shake shake shake shake shake it off ♪ taylor swift can apparently perform "shake it off" and any of her earlier hits at the amas this sunday. swift and her former record company, big machine, have reportedly come to an agreement ending a very public feud. she had accused the company of preventing her from performing her hits since they own the master recordings. in a statement, big machine said they have come to terms on a licensing agreement. on the cbs "money watch" now, the trump administration gives u.s. companies a temporary reprieve to do business with huawei, and chick-fil-a stops donation to some charities opposing lgbtq rights.

diane king hall has more. on the economic calendar, investors will look at fresh housing data today. new numbers on housing starts and building permits for october will be released. meanwhile, notable companies reporting earnings include home depot, kohl's, tjx, and urban outfitters. yesterday's stocks squeezed out small gains but it was enough for new records. the dow rose35 points, the s&p 500 gained one and the nasdaq gained nine. companies are being given a 90-day extension to do business with has telecom giant huawei. many internet and cell phone carriers buy equipment from the company. the extension allows them to keep updates up to date. the u.s. blacklisted huawei in may amid an escalating trade war with china. the trump administration fears the company could be spying for beijing. chick-fil-a plans to stop donations to some charities including the salvation army after recent protests by the lgbtq community.

the fast food chain has come under fire for donating to vblg groups opposing lgbtq rights including same-sex marriage. chick-fil-a says it plans to focus its donations on charities that include homelessness, hunger, and education. burger king is being sued for allegedly misleading consumers by not telling them that its impossible whoppers are cooked using beef fat. the self-described vegan filed a lawsuit claiming the company cooks its meatless impossible patties on the same grills as its traditional burgers. on its website, burger king suggests vegans should request that their impossible whoppers be cooked separately from the same broilers used to prepare beef and chicken. the company has not commented on the lawsuit. and reality star kylie jenner is selling a $600 million stake in her beauty business. jenner will sell 51% of her company, kylie cosmetics, to cody. the company says it will help the brand expand and enter new beauty categories.
