good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. that's expected to disrupt thanksgiving travel for millions. storms packing rain and snow will be impacting americans from coast to coast to coast. this as the record number of meteorolologist amber lee of ou los angeles station kcbc has the forecast. it's going to be an active weather pattern over the next few days for much of the country. especially because we have two low-pressure systems. right now a low-pressure system is moving through the rockies, bringing snow tuesday. this system will move east toward the great lakes region and gain in strength. not only is it bringing snowy conditions to the plains, you can see wet weather from texas all the way up toward chicago. the system will also continue to move toward the northeast and also bring snowy weather to new england. we also have a big low-pressure system that drops in. this one will bring us rain, snow, and also wind to the west coast.

also bring a lot of that wet weather to southern california. you can see as we head into thanksgiving day thursday, there is a chance that it may be too s off coast once we head into black friday. the very same system on the west coast will dry out for black friday, but you can see it is bringing a lot more of that wintry mix over to the rockies and also to the plains as we end the week. here's your thanksgiving day highs -- 31 degrees for denver, colorado. 39 for kansas city. 56 for los angeles. 53 for dallas, and 50 for new york. black friday shoppers, some areas will be drying out, especially for the west coast and the eastern seaboard. a wintry mix for the rockies and the middle of the country. 58 on friday for l.a. 55 for phoenix. 41 for chicago. 43 degrees for new york. that's your holiday forecast. amber lee, cbs news. now to possible turbulence in the race for the white house. former new york city mayor michael bloomberg officially launched his bid for the democratic nomination.

bloomberg unveiled a campaign that will be aimed at defeating president trump. and rebuilding america. his announcement injects a new level of uncertainty into the race. laura podesta in new york. what's the reaction to bloomberg's announcement so far? >> reporter: it's mixed. a lot of moderates are glad another middle of the road democrat is entering the race, but there's been push back from candidate like senator elizabeth warren who says we do not need another billion flair in the white house. >> now he's taking on him to rebuild a country and restore faith -- >> reporter: billionaire michael bloomberg is officially running for president. he launched his campaign with this minute-long ad, part of a $34 million media push. democratic leadership says it welcomes any candidate who has a good shot at retaking the white house. >> mike bloomberg's been a leading voice on guns, on immigration, and we have to beat donald trump.

and so i've said in the past and i'll say it again, let 1,000 flowers bloom. >> reporter: though fellow candidates have been quick to knock bloomberg's status as one of the world's ten wealthiest individuals. >> elections should not be for sale. not to billionaires, not to corporate executives. we need to build a grassroots movement. >> reporter: earlier this month, president trump dismissed a bloomberg candidacy. >> little michael will fail. he'll spend a lot of money. he's got some really big issues. >> reporter: bloomberg has faced accusations of sexist comments about women. and last week at a predominantly african-american church in brooklyn, he apologized for his support as new york mayor of the city's controversial stop-and-frisk policy. critics say it targeted black and hispanic men. >> i want you to know that i realize back then, i was wrong. and i'm sorry. >> reporter: the bloomberg campais it won't t that hel work for $1 a year if elected.

and bloomberg's campaign says it understands that based on that pledge not to accept donations he will not qualify for debates. but a spokesperson says if the dnc changes the rules and bloomberg is eligible, obviously he will appear. anne-marie? >> laura podesta in new york. thank you. the navy's top official, secretary richard spencer, was fired over the handling of a navy s.e.a.l.s war crimes case. it is the latest in a clash between senior military officials and president trump. spencer's dismissal came at the request yesterday of defense secretary mark esper. now esper cited an alleged private proposal by spencer to the white house to resolve the war crimes case of s.e.a.l. edward gallagher. earlier this month, president trump restored gallagher's rank. last week, spencer pushed for a disciplinary hearing for gallagher which would have ultimately forced gallagher out of the s.e.a.l.s. the house impeachment inquiry into president trump is approaching its next phase. lawmakers now are writing a

report that could lead to articles of impeachment. the action comes as a white house review reportedly found emails from top officials trying to justify president trump's decision to block military aid to ukraine. the "washington post" reported yesterday acting chief of staff mick mulvaney and white house budget officials are searching for legal backing for mr. trump to hold a nearly $400 million military aid for ukraine. president trump insisted there was no quid pro quo for the aid. the pro-democracy opposition in hong kong is celebrating a resounding victory after a record three million people went to the polls yesterday in city elections. pro-democracy candidates won nearly 90% of district council seats against many pro-beijing opponents. hong kong leader carrie lam issued a statement saying that the government respects the results and will listen to and seriously reflect on the opinions of the public. more now ramy inocencio.

>> reporter: lines across hong kong were never the norm for local district council elections until now. half a year of people-power protests, police brutality, and violence from fringe protesters pushed an angry civil society to turn out. alice and her 21-year-old son adrian, a new voter, polled for pro-democracy candidates. do you think full democracy can be achieved? >> no, that's something i want to believe in. but i know that the world is kind of cruel. >> reporter: at the same station, hong kong's beijing-backed leader, carrie lam, cast her vote and again pledged to listen to the people. >> i appeal to all registered voters in hong kong to come out to cast your vote. >> reporter: and they did, delivering a major rebuke to the government in a de facto referendum. opposition politicians ted hoy won re-election. after the election, what happens to the protest movement?

>> i think the protests will come back. the anger hasn't subsided. >> reporter: as ballots are counted, hong kong will wake up monday to a still-uncertain future now that a record number of people have turned their voices into votes. ramy inocencio, cbs news, hong kong. supreme court justice ruth bader ginsburg is back home after two nights in the hospital. the 86-year-old spent part of the weekend at the johns hopkins hospital in baltimore after experiencing chills and a fever. ginsburg has had a number of health issues lately. she's been treated for cancer four times, including twice in the past year. a court spokeswoman says she is doing well. and coming up on the "cbs morning news" now, passengers aboard a norwegian cruise line ship were hospitalized. and struggling down under. how recent fires are threatening the koala population. this is the "cbs morning news." venice got hit by another high tide sunday that flooded sites like st. mark's square. locals and tourists were forced to walk in plastic leggings. this is the fourth time venice flooded this month making it the worst month for high tides since 1872. cruise ship passengers were hospitalized with an illness, and fallout over colin kaepernick's tryout. those are some of the headlines from the "morning newsstand" the "associated press" reports a week after colin kaepernick's workout the quarterback and the nfl are blaming each other for what went wrong. last week, the former san francisco 49er staged his own workout for teams after he ditched the one the league had set up for him. kaepernick's representatives say the nfl staged the workout as a public relations stunt destined to fail. the league said it gave him a real chance to show off his skills, and he did not show up. kaepernick hasn't played since 2016 when he began kneeling during the national anthem to

protest police brutality and racial injustice. the "los angeles times" reports six ill passengers aboard a norwegian cruise line ship docked in los angeles, were checked by paramedics as they disembarked. four were sent to the hospital for further treatment. passengers on board the "norwegian joy" say it was the highly contagious norovirus. the cruise line says a few guests experienced a stomach-related illness. the ship had left miami and went through the panama canal and mexico been dock flooding l.a. -- before docking in l.a. >> they took all the pillows in the rooms, and they were sanitizing those. and then when we got off the ship, you know, they had their hazmat suits on. and they were sanitizing all the rooms. >> officials say none of the passengers' symptoms were life threatening. our partners at the bbc report kpop star du hara was found dead in her home in south korea.

police say the 28-year-old was found dead yesterday by an acquaintance. the cause of death is under investigation. she was hospitalized in may following an alleged suicide attempt. she appeared at a series of comeback performances last week, and her last post on instagram saturday was a photo of herself in bed with the caption "good night." our partners at cnet say despite reports that koalas are functionally extinct after devastating bush fires in australia, experts say that is not the case. images of koalas injured and dehydrated in the recent fires have been widely circulated. it's estimated up to 1,000 may have died. some reports say the bush fires destroyed up to 80% of the wildlife experts say koalas have been under threat for a long time from climate change, disease, and deforestation. and "people" reports the family of the 5-year-old boy who was thrown off a third-floor balcony at the mall of america in minnesota says he's back in

stocks closed higher friday. the dow rallied 109 points, the s&p 500 added 6, and the nasdaq gained 13. the owner of the louis vuitton brand announced it's reached a deal to buy tiffany for $16.2 billion. the move will give lvmh which also owns christian dior its first jump into the luxury jewelry market. the deal's expected to close in the middle of 2020. subject to the approval of regulators. also in deal news, swiss pharmaceutical company novartis has reached an agreement to buy u.s. cholesterol drugmaker the medicines company. that deal is worth $9.7 billion. the medicines company focuses on research and treatments for cardiovascular disease. it specifically looks at ways to lower cholesterol. that deal is expected to close early next year. "frozen ii" froze out the competition and clinched a box office record for disney this weekend. >> how did you get in the

forest? >> impossible. >> the animated sequel brought in an estimated $127 million in north america. 20th century fox's "ford v. ferrari" slipped to second, bringing in $16 million. and the debut of sony's "a beautiful day in the neighborhood" brought in close to $14 million. elon musk is suggesting on twitter that he secured 200,000 preorders of tesla's new electric pickup truck. the news comes just three days after the cyber truck was unveiled in los angeles. but the bulletproof windows didn't exactly shatter expectations during a demonstration. when a metal ball was hurled at the windows, they cracked. twice. tesla plas to start making the cyber truck around late 2021. anne-marie? >> obviously that did not deter people at all. >> yeah. but talk about a big oops. one user made this comment on twitter as he continued the presentation, it's like when

our top stories this morning -- wintry storms are expected to impact thanksgiving travel from coast to coast. one system is expected to bring snow and rain to the central u.s. on tuesday and impact the east on wednesday. another storm is slated to hammer the west with rain and snow starting tomorrow. and former new york city mayor michael bloomberg is officially running for president. he launched his campaign yesterday. bloomberg said that his focus will be squarely aimed at defeating president trump and rebuilding america. fellow democrats have been quick to knock his status as one of the world's ten wealthiest individuals. the number of automakers are introducing new models of environmentally friendly cars. but they are not electric. chris martinez shows us cars that run on hydrogen.

i also have the option to show how much of the overall power i'm using. >> reporter: adam has driven a toyota for three years on a full tank. he says he can travel nearly 300 miles in the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. >> for the most part i'm able to refuel in five minutes and go about my day. >> reporter: a fuel cell car doesn't have to be plugged in for power and instead uses hydrogen and oxygen to generate electricity on board. the tailpipe's only emission is water. >> i think if people got to drive these cars they would want to. >> reporter: road show says despite the fuel cell technology sales haven't taken off like electric vehicles. one reason, the cost. new models introduced at this year's l.a. auto show like hyundai's nexo carry a price tag of just over $58,000. the other hurdle -- california is the only state that has a large number of fueling stations available. >> it could change in the future if we get more fuel cell stations elsewhere in the u.s. there isn't any major movement
