this morning the northeast is bracing for a powerful storm. a foot or more of snow is expected in parts of upstate new york and new england. at least 50 million americans are in the storm's path, and at least six deaths are blamed so far r on the storm since friday. right now winter storm alerts are posted in more than a dozen states. laura podesta is here in new york. laura, the storm is already causing major headaches for travelers. >> reporter: yeah, and a lot of kids in the northeast are getting an extended thanksgiving break thanks to snow and sleet that's coming down now and is expected to continue through the day. this storm is turning a lot of places into a winter wonderland. as you know, we are still weeks away from the official start of winter. cars and tractor-trailers in upstate new york were slowed or brought to a halt completely as a powerful pre-winter snowstorm took aim at the northeast. over the weekend, the same weather system dumped more than a foot of snow on parts of the upper midwest. >> it's -- i never seen this before either.

i lived here the last 10, 15 years. a first for me. >> reporter: by the time it stopped falling sunday evening, almost two feet of snow had blanketed duluth, minnesota. that is what's now in store from philadelphia to boston. >> the first storm of the year. everybody getsittle amped up >> i hate it. like, come on. it's 6:30, and you get out of work, and you have to clean your car because the stupid snow. >> reporter: the timing of the storm couldn't have been much worse. >> we had quite an argument about it earlier today. why would you choose to fly, you know, the sunday after thanksgiving? i mean, it's ridiculous, right? >> reporter: some 3.1 million people were ticketed to fly somewhere yesterday until mother nature intervened and threw a wrench in many of those plans. it had been expected to be the busiest travel day in u.s. history. in fact, between yesterday and today, more than 1,000 flights

have been canceled into and out of the u.s. and more than 8,000 delayed according to airline tracker flightaware.com. >> yikes. laura podesta in new york. thank you. a new round of snowy weather could hit the midwest this week. meteorologist amber lee of kcbs has more on that and another storm system in the west. >> the start of december is bringing wintry weather from the midwest all the way to the northeast. we have a slow-moving low-pressure system bringing rain, snow, and ice to the region. and with this low-pressure system, it's going to rain to philadelphia, new york, and also boston. later this afternoon, that rain will change over to snow, and then we're looking at possibly more than a foot of snow for upstate new york and into portions of new england. this low-pressure system will linger into tuesday, bringing wrap-around moisture. that means scattered snow showers, gusty winds, and also a lot of cold air. then by tuesday night, the system will start to push off the coast, and then we're looking at more snowy conditions for the midwest. this is the very same system that brought all of that snow

and wet weather over to southern california last week. and then it looks like more wet weather expected for southern california as we head into late tuesday, going into wednesday, and then by the time we head into the end of the week, another big low-pressure system will bring much more rain to the west coast. you can see that this low-pressure system is coming in off the pacific. so highs on monday will be a little bit chilly. 41 for new york, 38 for pittsburgh, 40 degrees for nashville, 70 for phoenix. upper 60s for los angeles, and then on tuesday the conditions will be even colder because with that low-pressure system it's leaving behind a lot of cold air. 36 for boston. 39 for new york. 40 for chicago. we have upper 60s for los angeles. that's your forecast. amber lee, cbs news. bad weather's a possible factor in a deadly plane crash in south dakota that killed nine members of an idaho family. federal investigators are due to arrive at the site today. the plane crashed saturday shortly after taking off from the chamberlain municipal airport.

it was headed to idaho falls. jim and kirk hanson, the founder of a popular idaho-based health and wellness company, were among the nine killed. also among the dead, two children. there were three survivors. they have beenen transported to medical facilities in sioux falls. bad weather was reported at the time of the crash. this week there are new public hearings in the impeachment inquiry into president trump. the white house has announced that mr. trump and his attorneys will not participate in hearings scheduled for wednesday. weijia jiang has the latest. >> reporter: president trump himself will not participate in the house judiciary committee's first hearing on wednesday, tweeting "i will be representing our country in london at nato while the democrats are holding the most ridiculous impeachment hearings in history." the house intelligence committee will likely release a report reviewing what members found after collecting evidence for weeks to determine if the

president abused power by pressuring ukraine to investigate political rivals. on wednesday, the house judiciary committee will take the lead. ranking republican doug collins said the first witness he wants to call is house intel chairman adam schiff. >> it's easy to hide behind a report. it's easy to hide behind a gavel in closed hearings. it's another to have to answer questions. >> reporter: collins blasted democrats for giving republicans until friday to decide what witnesses they want to subpoena and what evidence they will present claiming that's not enough time. democratic congressman hakim jeffries was asked about how long the hearings could go. >> we'll see what happens. i mean, we need to be guided by the truth. if they come forward with relevant witnesses, i think we all may want to hear from john bolton. we all would like to hear from mick mulvaney. >> reporter: the president has said he would, too. >> i will tell you, i like to have the people go up -- except one thing, it validates a

corrupt investigation. >> reporter: the same reason mr. trump's legal team may not take part in any of the proceedings. cbs news, west palm beach. more than 24 hours after a shooting in new orleans, there are still no arrests. ten people were shot sunday morning near the historic french quarter. two are in critical condition. the city's police superintendent is vowing a full investigation. the mayor called the shooting, quote, an ugly disruption to an otherwise beautiful holiday weekend. new orleans was packed with college football fans in town for the bayou classic. and the death toll has now risen to 20 from a multi-day battle between police and a drug cartel about an hour south of the u.s. border. [ gunfire ] this is what's left of the city hall in villa union after the car tall rolled up saturday and opened fire. that started a series of gun

fights. the casualties include 14 presumed members of the cartel, four police officers, and two civilians who had been taken hostage. it's not clear why the cartel launched the attacks. there are new questions after friday's deadly knife attack on london bridge about why the attacker wasn't in prison. 28-year-old usman kahn served six years of an eight-year sentence for his part in a plot to blow up the london stock exchange. the two people killed were honored at a church service yesterday. vigils are scheduled today. both worked with the prisoner rehabilitation program that kahn had been a part of. isis has claimed responsibility for the knife attack. coming up on the "morning news" now, the search is on for four teenagers who escaped from juvenile detention. two are accused of murder. and breaking her silence. lori loughlin's daughter olivia jade posts her first youtube message in the wake of the college admissions scandal. this is the "cbs morning news." college admissions scandal.

it's got to be tide. the daughter of lori loughlin returned to youtube, and authorities are searching for four juvenile escapees. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." our nashville affiliate, wtvf, reports four teens are on the run after escaping from a juvenile detention facility on saturday. two of the escaped prisoners are murder suspects. the two others have previously been charged with armed robbery. they were on a work detail when they managed to get out as guards tried to break up a fight. robert sherrill runs a local youth outreach program. >> if you're watching, turn

yourself in. the crime has been committed. they're hunting you. they're going to find you. >> all four teenagers are considered extremely dangerous. the "los angeles times" reports paramedics have responded to the same cruise ship twice in one week due to sick passengers. the norwegian "joy" ship arrived in los angeles yesterday. a total of 23 passengers have been treated for flu-like symptoms. but all have declined to go to the hospital. one passenger heard the actual number of sick people was much higher. >> dr. roy told me that there was 75 to 80 people who were already sick on the ship that were in quarantine. >> it spread like wildfire. i don't know how we were able to not get sick. >> the cause of the illness has not yet been identified. according to the "times," norwegian cruise lines has not yet commented on the situation. "usa today" reports lori loughlin's daughter, olivia jade, has spoken for the first time since her parents were

charged in an alleged scam to get her and her sister into usc. yesterday she posted a message on youtube. >> i want to move on with my life, not try to be in a selfish way. it's so hard because i'm not trying to like make this about me or like how i've been because it -- it's not the point of this. >> she has nearly two million followers on youtube. her parents are facing felony charges including bribery and mail fraud. they have pleaded not guilty. their daughters are no longer enrolled in school. and finally, "people" magazine is reporting on the death of tv actress shelly morrison. she was best known for playing rosario salazar, the feisty maid of megan mullaly's character on "will and grace." morrison recently said that rosario was one of her favorite all-time characters.

[ screams ] terrifying moments as a metal beam falls off a ferris wheel narrowly missing people on the ground. it happened friday night at the magical winter lights festival in la mark, texas. no one was hurt. on the cbs "money watch" now, cyber monday is expected to ring up big sales, and the movie "frozen ii" sets another record. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. today we'll get a look at how the manufacturing sector is faring. a report from the institute for supply management is set to be released soon after the opening bell. meanwhile, notable companies reporting earnings today include dollar general, loccitane and new york and company. stocks closed lower friday. the dow tumbled 112. the s&p 500 fell 12, and the nasdaq lost 39.

u.s. consumers looking to score cyber monday deals are expected to spend a record $9.4 billion today. that's a 19% jump from last year, and shoppers are turning to their smart phones now more than ever before. it comes after black friday's record-setting $7.4 billion in online sales. that's the second largest online sales day ever behind last year's cyber monday. the united auto workers and fiat chrysler reached a tentative agreement on a four-year contract over the weekend. it includes a total of $9 billion in investments and also reportedly includes a $9,000 bonus for workers and a promise not to close any factories where vehicles are assembled for the next four years. both sides are slated to meet this week to review the details. and "frozen ii" iced out the competition at the movies in its second week setting a thanksgiving record at the box office.
