so this morning the impeachment investigation into president trump enters a crucial phase. the house judiciary committee will hold its first public hearing focusing on the possible charges mr. trump may face. today's witnesses include four constitutional law experts at respected universities from harvard to stanford. and yesterday a report released by the house intelligence committee said mr. trump used his power to pressure ukraine's president to investigate his political rivals. skyler henry is on capitol hill. what can we expect today? >> reporter: good morning. well, after weeks of testimony, the house intelligence committee voted to adopt the impeachment inquiry report late yesterday afternoon. now this process goes to the judiciary committee which traditionally is charged with drafting articles of impeachment. now the white house earlier this week despite an invitation declined to be at today's hearing. house democrats released a 300-page report detailing their findings in the impeachment pinquiry so far.

>> this is about whether the american people have a right to expect that the president of the united states is going to act in their interests, with their security in mind and not for some illicit personal or political reason. >> reporter: covering two months of depositions and public hearings, the report says president trump used the power of his office to applying increasing pressure on the president of ukraine to investigate mr. trump's political rivals. >> was there a quid pro quo? the answer is yes. >> reporter: the second section lays out the president's obstruction of the inquiry stating that there trump tried to conceal his conduct from the public, intimidating witnesses. >> i think the democrats should be ashamed of themselves. >> reporter: speaking from london, president trump called the report unpatriotic. >> this is what you're going to impeach the president of the united states on? >> reporter: today the house judiciary committee holds its first hearing in the impeachment inquiry. four legal scholars will be questioned about the historic precedent of the impeachment. >> look at the evidence and, you know, go through just exactly what it is and what it means to

our constitution and most importantly to our national security. >> reporter: according to the "associated press," the three witnesses democrats have invited will argue for impeachment. michael gearhardt says in his opening statement if congress fails to impeach here, then the impeachment process has lost all meaning. jonathan turley, ananalyst, is e lone republican witness. his opening statements says the democrats are bringing a slipshod impeach case against the president. the house minority will have until tomorrow to support minority views on this report. from there, it will go to the judiciary committee. but today's hearing will go on as scheduled. anne-marie? >> okay. skyler henry on capitol hill, thank you. so we'll bring you the first house judiciary committee hearing on impeachment in a cbs news special report. coverage of the hearings on our 24-hour streaming network, cbsn. president trump's rhetoric is putting our allies on edge at the annual nato summit in london. his meeting yesterday with france's emmanuel macron appeared laced with tension. and here he is leaving a meeting with british prime minister boris johnson. something johnson reportedly hoped to avoid for political reasons. today he'll sit down with germany's angela merkel. ben tracy reports from london. >> reporter: the president paid a visit to the queen at buckingham palace and posed for a picture with prince charles. mr. trump is still drawing the royal share of attention in london. >> would you like some nice isis fighters? >> reporter: in a tense exchange, he offered the president of france captured isis fighters. >> let's be serious -- >> reporter: drawing a not-so-subtle rebuke from

macron. the once budding romance between the two tinged with bitterness and back-handed compliments. >> this is why he's a great politician because that was one of the greatest non-answers i've ever heard. and that's okay. >> reporter: just hours earlier, mr. trump laid into emmanuel macron's recent criticism that nato is strategically brain dead due to a lack of u.s. leadership. >> that is a very -- very, very nasty statement to essentially 28 including them, 28 countries. >> reporter: then he flipped the script. mr. trump suddenly casting himself as a nato defender, an alliance he has called obsolete. >> you can't go around making statements like that about nato. it's very disrespectful. >> reporter: president trump often rails as what he sees as freeloading and has strong armed them into upping their defense spending. >> what is your number? >> reporter: challenging justin trudeau over canada's contribution. >> they'll be okay. >> reporter: the president ignored shouted questions about the impeachment report. the white house is hoping images of him on the world stage will take the focus off his battles back home. ben tracy, cbs news, london.

now to campaign 2020. senator kamala harris is the latest candidate to drop out of the race for the democratic presidential nomination. >> here's the deal, guys -- my campaign for president simply does not have the financial resources to continue. >> some of harris' rivals weighed in shortly after she made the announcement yesterday. >> she is an incredibly strong public servant, and has done great work already for our country in the u.s. senate. and i know she is going to do even mother nature. >> i have mixed emotions because she is a solid, solid person. [ cheers ] >> with harris out, 15 candidates remain in the race for the democratic nomination. for the second time in two days, an armed student was shot by officers in wisconsin. the 16-year-old student was shot at a high school in oshkosh after allegedly stabbing a school resource officer yesterday. it comes one day after an armed

student was shot in waukesha, about 70 miles away. that student reportedly threatened officers with a pellet gun. both the student and the school resource officer who was stabbed in yesterday's incident are expected to recover. one parent who rushed to the school to make sure her daughter was okay says this seems to be a terrifying trend. >> last year she went through a similar situation at another school. to have it happen twice, you know, in this area, is super scary. >> reporter: investigators are looking into the case. a motive remains unclear. and police in tennessee say they have arrested two of the four teens who escaped a juvenile mentioned center over the weekend. last night calvin house and decorius wright were arrested in madison. the teens escaped the facility on saturday. wright was being held on murder charges while hause was facing gun charges. >> we're happy to have them off the streets tonight. we have a lot of work to be done.

the rock band the who is returning to the cincinnati area after a tragedy 40 years ago. and a california congressman enters a guilty plea in court. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the san diego union tribune" is reporting on congressman duncan hunter's guilty plea to a charge that he stole at least $150,000 in campaign money for his personal use. the money was used for golf, tequila, family vacations, and outings with women who were not hunter's wife. minutes after admitting his guilt in court, the california republican suggested that he didn't actually mean to do it. >> i failed to monitor and account for my campaign spending. i made mistake, and that's what today was all about. >> hunter's now facing possible prison time. he'll also resign from congress. hunter's wife was also charged, but she had agreed to testify against him. the "associated press" reports travelers including u.s.

citizens may soon be required to have their photograph taken as they enter or leave the country of the department of homeland security is considering the move as a way to collect information for a facial recognition program. democratic senator ed markey has vowed to introduce a bill to block the measure. multiple airlines are already experimenting with facial recognition technology. and here's a story from our cincinnati affiliate wkrc about trying to make amends. the who have announced plans to play in the area for the first time since 11 people were crushed to death in a stampede outside one of their concerts in 1979. part of the proceeds will go to a scholarship fund from the high school where three of the victims were students. the show is scheduled for april 23rd at northern kentucky university. still to come, controversy. why a commercial for an exercise bike, the peloton, has some people on social media so angry. here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country.

auction block in new york. only two are known to exist. it's fully functioning and has a disk drive. the computer will be sold for an estimated $120,000 to $180,000. technology experts say that the product helped revolutionize personal computing. on the cbs "money watch" now, the end of an era for google, and why a peloton ad is being mocked on social media. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. today investors will get adp's read on private payroll growth for november. meanwhile, discount store chain five below, campbell's soup, and slack will deliver quarterly results today. stocks fell on tuesday amid the ongoing trade dispute between the u.s. and china. the dow dropped 280 points. the s&p 500 lost 20. the nasdaq was down 47. the co-founders of google are stepping down. larry page and sergei brin will

stem aside as ceo and president of google parent company alphabet. they founded google over two decades ago. sundar pichai who has been ceo will take the reins. he will continue to lead meetings, earnings calls, and congressional testimonies. google is facing increasing criticism and multiple investigations from authorities in the u.s. and europe stemming from its privacy policies. ready-to-eat sushi, salads, and spring rolls are being recalled over listeria fears. the fuji food products are sold at major retailers including trader joe's, 7-eleven, and walgreens in 31 states and washington, d.c. the recalled product are packaged in plastic with most sell-by dates of november 22nd to december 6th on the labels. the problem was discovered during a routine fda inspection at a facility in massachusetts. that facility has ceased operations pending the outcome of an investigation. there have been no reported illnesses.

starbucks is expanding its holiday drink menu. irish cream cold brew is now available at participating locations nationwide. the festive new beverage is made with cold brew coffee and irish cream flavored syrup over ice topped with vanilla sweet cream foam and cocoa powder. starbucks says its cold beverages make up more than half of beverage sales. the new drink is only available for the holidays. and peloton's new holiday ad is facing backlash on social media with some users calling the ad sexist. in the ad a woman gets a peloton bike from her husband. over the course of a year, the woman films herself exercising. however, some twitter users are criticizing the ad because the woman's already fit appearance. >> a year ago, i didn't realize how much this would change me. thank you. >> in response to the backlash, company's stock was down more than 9% yesterday. pelon ted about the ad. anne-marie? >> you know, i think i just sort

after a massive earthquake rocked albania last week, damaged buildings are being demolished as a precaution. yesterday a remote-controlled explosion brought down a six-story building after it was considered a hazard. the quake damaged more than 11,000 buildings and killed 51 people. there was a close call for actress anna faris and her family. they were reportedly exposed to carbon monoxide at a vacation home on thanksgiving. firefighters were called to the lake tahoe home where the actress and 12 of her family members were experiencing flu-like symptoms. the family first thought it was altitude sickness and went to fe saved their lives. >> people were sick enough to leave the dinner table at a family meal and take themselves to the hospital. you know, i think that would not necessarily always happen. >> carbon monoxide levels inside the home were almost six times

higher than the maximum recommended level. it's california law to have a carbon monoxide detector inside single-family homes. there were apparently no working alarms inside the rental home. code enforcement is investigating. the younger brother of botham jean, the texas man killed by a cop in his own home, was given an award for showing compassion. yesterday, 18-year-old brent jean was given the 2019 ethical courage award from a law enforcement group. last year jean's brother, botham, was shot and killed in his apartment by former dallas police officer amber guyger. after guyger was sentenced for the murder, jean asked the judge if he could hug her in an act of forgiveness. so coming up on "cbs this morning," anthony mason talks with chef sean brock about his new cookbook and why he decided to walk away from it all. i'm anne-marie green. this is the "cbs morning news." m it all. i'm anne-marie green. this is the "cbs morning news." wanna go to the gym?

medical disaster. some of my children will be sick from this for the rest of their lives. >> reporter: two families are suffering from respiratory and neurological illnesses. they're among five military families who this week sued the owners and property managers of their privatized housing at macdill air force base in florida, alleging unsafe living conditions like rotting walls and floors and problems with mold so severe that in one instance mushrooms grew out of the floor and carpet. it's the latest in a series of the lawsuits alleging similar issues with mold, lead paint, and infestations of pests and rats. private contractors are responsible for more than 200,000 homes on military bases nationwide. in 2016 the defense department's own inspector general cited pervasive health and safety hazards. >> they treat military tenants like they're captives. >> reporter: senators on the armed services committee grilled senior military leadership. >> when is enough enough?
