and if christmas was a competition, this family's record-breaking light display might win. this is the "cbs weekend news." >> barnett: good evening, everyone, and welcome. anm errol barnett. the countdown is on. a record 115 million people are traveling for the holidays and nearly all of them doing so on lle road. that can be dangerous. take a look at what happened in irginia today. gce and fog are blamed for this massive chain reaction interstate pile-up involving nearly 70 vehicles. 51 people were taken to hospitals and two of them are in critical condition. it is a cautionary note for anyone heading outside as many did today searching for those last-minute gifts. our laura podesta is among them. ur reporter: nationwide shoppers are making a list and checking at twice. n> ornaments, cocktail stuff i

ecess, whatever catches your eye. >> reporter: hanukkah is already here and christmas just days reay. >> i have coupons i have kohl's cash. >> reporter: if you hate crowds and traffic, you will want to avoid the shopping crush this weekend. experts estimate americans will spend $34 billion, $2.5 billion more than black friday. >> i like it. it's less corporatey. >> it's more special, more of an event. >> reporter: picking up your gift in person might be the safest bet. with more than two billion packages expected to be delivered this holiday season, fedex, u.p.s., and other othices could have delays. analysts blame bad weather and e e fact thanksgiving came so late this year, leaving just 26 days between black friday and christmas eve, the shortest possible amount of time.

santa may be extra generous this year. ehe national retail federation estimates the average american will spend $1,047 this holiday idason, the most money since it began keeping track. errol? ar barnett: laura, thank you. now, for those of you traveling, the weather should not be completely frightful, but there are some exceptions. our meteorologist jeff beradelli xc here to explain where exactly. jeff? >> reporter: so there's one big exception. ont's the southeast u.s. exy is it raining cats and dogs down there. ahat's going to continue for next 36 hours. fernight tonight, watch out for severe weather, the possibility of isolated tornadoes in porida, and everything converges on the southeast coast vater tonight, tomorrow, and oamorrow night. south carolina, north carolina, georgia, we're talking multiple inches of rain fall and strong, gusty winds. watch out for that. it should all wind down tomorrow night. look at the rain, generally two ow four inches in parts of e rrida. wait until you see the purple. sat's as much as eight-plus inches of rain along the coast

of both georgia and also into south carolina. maybe extending as far north as tee north carolina border. along the west coast, the weather dying down but still 1 to 3 inches possible and snowfall another 1 to 2 feet in the mountains. traveling for christmas eve and g ristmas day, we're looking good in most places. temperatures 20 degrees above normal. it's going to be mild in parts of the east, snow in the iltermountain west. if you want a white christmas, not many places, very far north close to the canadian border, and especially the rockies, they're going to see a lot of snow. >> barnett: good stuff. jeff, thank you. >> reporter: you're welcome. >> barnett: today a house party in chicago erupted in gunfire. 13 people were wounded, four critically. itlice say people ran from gunfire inside the party only to be shot outside. one person is under arrest and chicago mayor lori lightfoot igld reporters this type of violence cannot be tolerated. >> it's a terrible tragedy, and rribkly, it's an incredible act nf cowardice.

>> reporter: senate democratic leader chuck schumer highlighted a newly uncovered white house e- mail asking the defense department to please hold off on military aid to ukraine. the e-mail came soon after the july 25th phone call in which president trump asked ukrainian president zelensky to investigate joe biden. >> a top administration official, one that we requested, is saying stop the aid 91 minutes after trump called trlensky and said keep it hush- hush. what more do you need to request a witness? >> reporter: senate republican leader mitch mcconnell has said he would prefer a short trial seth no witnesses to keep the focus on the nation's business. but on cbs's "face the nation," republican senator roy blunt suggested that could change. b> there may be a time when we decide that witnesses are essential. >> reporter: as for the timing of the impeachment trial, it's very much up in the air, because house speaker nancy pelosi has

morrison has not done enough to ought climate change, blamed for fueling these massive and deadly fires. today 30 firefighters from dnada and nine from the united states joined the fight against those flames. for the first time in more than ano centuries there will be no christmas mass at notre dame frthedral, a tradition that's endured since 1803 has now fallen victim to last april's devastating fire. imtiaz tyab is in paris. >> reporter: a song of praise tinged with sadness. these singers are part of the notre dame choir. they have been rehearsing at a nearby church after the gothic l thedral was nearly destroyed in a fire back in april. most here say they still find it hard to believe they won't be wrforming christmas mass thee ngis year. >> no think that i was ill last christmas and i missed christmas m notre dame thinking that i would go again this year with no problems, and, no, i can't believe i'm not going to do christmas.

>> reporter: church officials say despite their prayers, they had little choice but to cancel christmas mass for the first ntme in over two centuries. notre dame's rector says, "it was only during the french revolution did services stop at the cathedral. not even during world war i and ii did it close its doors completely." since the fire, notre dame's clergy, congregation and choir have moved to this temporary home just under a mile from the landmark. despite the damage, the french dmvernment is confident services will resume again by 2025. in the grand scheme of things, five or six years of renovations lesn't seem like a huge amount of time for a cathedral that is s55 years old, but reconstruction experts say it will likely take longer. but for edwarda berria who grew up in brazil and has called rrris home for the last three

how they're just dying out. >> reporter: ranchers who lost their leases to graze cattle here sued to reduce the number of horses on the land. wild horse advocates are also suing, arguing the horses are econic and could be sold for slaughter. s> most americans love horses, and they don't want to see america's iconic wild horses rounded up and sold for human consumption abroad. >> reporter: efforts to appease both sides have fallen to the forest service on open house tours and social media, there is plenty to look at by anyone who would be a good fit. >> you have a year before you ceceive title on that horse, and y that time, you will be asked to show that you are taking good atre of that horse. the facility requirements, the horse needs a 20x20 enclosure and a walk-in barn, a three- aded barn. >> reporter: megan highnote has hil that on the ranch she helps manage in oregon. today's purchase is the second horse she adopted from the
