here in new york. anne-marie green is off. i'm wendy gillette. president trump did not take a break from social media over christmas, and overnight he denounced his impeachment. late last night on twitter, mr. trump called house speaker nancy pelosi, quote, crazy nancy, and wrote, quote, dems want to run majority republican senate. the president is spending christmas at his mar-a-lago resort in florida. he also tweeted a special christmas message. >> we say a special prayer for those military service members stationed far from home, and we renew our hope for peace among nations and joy to the world. >> meanwhile, tensions are escalating over north korea's nuclear program. the country had sparked speculation about a missile launch saying it planned to send a, quote, christmas gift to the u.s., but the launch never happened. marc liverman is in new york. marc, what action did the u.s. apparently take ahead of this threat? >> reporter: good morning, wendy. in the last few days, we've seen

a lot of international diplomacy focused on avoiding the heated confrontation we saw two years ago between the u.s. and north korea. but the question remains -- will it be enough? in north korea, christmas came and went without a gift for the united states. the communist nation had promised one earlier this month. it was widely expected to be a ballistic missile or nuclear weapons test. >> we'll find out what the surprise is, and we'll deal with it very successfully. >> reporter: president trump had brushed off the threat on christmas eve. >> maybe it's a present where he sends me a beautiful vase. as opposed to a missile test. >> reporter: the u.s. apparently wasn't taking chances. south korean media reports four american surveillance planes flew over the korean peninsula. pyongyang has also threatened to take unspecified action if u.s. sanctions are not eased by the end of the year.

recent satellite images show a new structure believed to be for manufacturing mobile launchers for long-range missiles. more than 28,000 u.s. troops are stationed in south korea. >> we understand that korea is a demanding assignment. >> reporter: they still found time to celebrate the holidays. >> it was really great because it reminded me of things that were being made back home. >> reporter: north korean leader kim jong-un is expected to deliver a national address on new year's day. and nuclear talks between the u.s. and north korea have stalled since a february summit between president trump and kim jong-un fell apart. the communist nation hasn't tested long-range missiles in more than a year, but they have still been testing short-range ballistic missiles. wendy? >> marc liverman in new york. thanks. a powerful winter storm is expected to cause delays today on what's supposed to be the busiest travel day of the year. snow is already hammering the mountains in southern

california. interstate 5 was shut down yesterday after vehicles got stuck in the snow. the snow and wind were so strong, some mountain ski resorts closed down. that storm is now headed east. flood alerts are posted in california and arizona. heavy snow is possible in parts of the rockies and plains later this week. snow and ice are also forecast in parts of the midwest and northeast this weekend. and in the south, heavy rain and thunderstorms are the biggest threats. an arrest has been made in connection with the stabbing deaths of two men including the brother of a san francisco 49ers quarterback. 23-year-old michael moseley was arrested in nashville yesterday. policee was taken into custody. two men were stabbed to death outside a bar last weekend, including clayton beathard, the brother of 49ers quarterback cj beathard. moseley is charged with two counts of criminal homicide and one count of attempted criminal homicide. police in chicago are

searching for a suspect and a motive in connection with a christmas morning shooting. two people were hurt, including a 7-year-old girl who's in critical condition and fighting for her life. tom hanson reports. >> reporter: chicago police say someone shot into this southside home from the sidewalk around 2:00 a.m. christmas morning. the 7-year-old girl was struck in the abdomen. >> the little girl should have been waking up to opening presents instead of waking up in a hospital. i mean, she's fighting for her life. >> reporter: she was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. a 38-year-old man who was shot in the leg in the same incident is in stable condition. chicago mayor lori light foote tweeted, "praying for the young girl struck by a bullet in brighton park. cpd will do everything possible to bring the perpetrator to justice. as a city, you have our love and support." the latest crime data shows overall murders and shootings are down, but a string of shootings involving children under age 12 in 2019 has climbed to at least 18 according to the gun violence archive. just this weekend, 13 people

ranging from 16 to 48 years old were shot at a memorial for another shooting victim. >> our people become numb, and we think that this is normal. and this is not normal. >> reporter: in a statement, the family tells us they are grateful for the outpouring of love and support. meanwhile, investigators are asking for any tips that will lead them to a suspect and a motive. tom hanson, cbs news, new york. an investigation is under way in minneapolis to determine the cause of a fire at a 93-year-old hotel used to house the homeless. the fire started early christmas morning on the second floor of the frances drake hotel before spreading to the third floor. it forced residents out into freezing temperatures. about 250 people were left without a place to stay. no one was seriously hurt. pro-democracy demonstrations returned to the streets of hong

europe, asia, and australia could see it. the future of notre dame cathedral is uncertain, and harvey weinstein could face more charges. the "los angeles times" reports the los angeles county district attorney's office is considering filing criminal charges against harvey weinstein. that comes two years after police launched sexual assault investigations involving the disgraced movie mogul. a spokesperson for the da's office says eight cases are under review. weinstein is scheduled to go trial in new york next month on sex crime charges. he's pleaded not guilty and has denied all allegations of nonconsensual sex. "people" says espn college football reporter edward ashoff died yesterday. he recently contracted pneumonia. he joined espn in 2011. during the past three seasons he reported from college campuses for espn.com, shorts center, the sec network, and espn radio. espn says ashoff was set to

marry his fiancee in april. in an earlier post he thanked his fiancee for helping him through the illness. the "boston globe" reports a woman and two young children died after being found unconscious on a sidewalk near a parking garage. the three were found yesterday and rushed to the hospital where they were pronounced dead. officials have provided little information about the woman and children, including how they were connected. they described both children as 5 years old or younger. >> we will do everything in our powers to find out everything we can about this death investigation. >> authorities say a car connected to the woman was found in the garage with two children's car seats inside. our new york city station wcbs reports the body of a 33-year-old soldier from new jersey killed in combat in

afghanistan is back in the u.s. the body of sergeant first class michael goble arrived at dover air force base in delaware on christmas day. he was killed monday in a roadside bombing. the taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. goble was killed three weeks before he was supposed to finish his final tour of duty in afghanistan. and "usa today" reports france's notre dame cathedral may never recover from april's devastating fire. the cathedral failed to host christmas services yesterday for the first time in more than 200 years. the rector of the more than 800-year-old cathedral says it's still so fragile, there's a 50% chance it may never be saved. the cathedral was under renovation at the time of the fire which destroyed its roof and collapsed its spire. still to come, a recall of hard-boiled eggs. a listeria outbreak has sickened at least seven people and killed one. you try hard, you eat right...

opponents are predicting a spike in addiction and marijuana-related illnesses. on the cbs "money watch," there's a recall of hard-boiled eggs, and online holiday shopping hits a new record. we have more from the new york stock exchange on that and more. good morning, naomi. >> reporter: good morning to you. investors will return from the christmas holiday with two key pieces of economic data -- the weekly jobless claims report and weekly mortgage applications will be released before the markets open. stocks closed mixed on christmas eve. the dow was down 36 points, the s&p 500 was flat, and the nasdaq added 7 points. a hard-boiled egg recall has expanded following a potentially deadly listeria outbreak. according to the cdc, eggs from almark foods in georgia were sent to service operators nationwide including walmart and trader joe's. the expanded recall includes popular brands like eggland's best, pete and jerry's, and

vital farms. at least seven people in five states have gotten sick including one in texas who died. consumers with any of the recalled products should throw them away or return them to the store. a record number of consumers spent this holiday season shopping on line. according to data from mastercard, e-commerce sales hit a record high up more than 18% from last year. online sales accounted for 14% of retail between november 1st and christmas eve. consumer experts say the holiday shopping season can account for up to 40% of annual sales. and holiday shopping doesn't end with christmas. bargain hunters can take advantage of discounts on clothing, home decor, and other items well into the new year. experts say shoppers should do price comparisons to ensure they are getting the best deal. shoppers planning to exchange or return presents should also be aware of return policies. retailers which once had limited return policies cut them to one year, 180 days, now in some

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ 2019 was a record year for yellowstone's steamboat geyser. the u.s. geological survey says the tallest active geyser in the world erupted 47 times this year, blowing past last year's record of 32. steamboat's major eruptions shoot water more than 300 feet into the air. until the recent surge in eruptions, the geyser had been mostly calm for about 15 years. today marks 15 years since the indian ocean tsunami killed upwards of 230,000 people. it was set off by a powerful underwater earthquake on december 26th, 2004. the quake had a magnitude of
