good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning an investigation is under way into a deadly shooting inside a texas church. the incident unfolded yesterday in white settlement, near fort worth. police say a gunman opened fire during services. two parishioners were killed. a church member gunned down the suspect. the entire shooting lasted six seconds. laura podesta is here in new york. do we know what motivated this attack? >> reporter: anne-marie, we do not. investigators say they are not yet releasing the gunman's name. but the fbi tells cbs news he had roots in the community and has a criminal past. meanwhile, the congregation will it was over in just six seconds. a live stream of the services at west freeway church of christ shows a man standing up, pulling

out a shotgun, and opening fire. [ gunfire ] >> there are two people that were shot, and they died at a local hospital. >> reporter: church members screamed and ducked under pews. several others were armed and returned fire, killing the gunman. >> the suspect is deceased. the threat of what stopped thanks to the quick and heroic actions of the people inside the church. >> reporter: the church and town of white settlement has a security team. >> the citizens who were inside that church undoubtedly saved 242 other parishioners. >> reporter: cbs news has learned the two parishioners killed were identified as richard white and tony wallace. >> today is one sermon i'll never preach. >> reporter: bret farmer is the senior minister. >> it's called leaving a legacy. two men today left a legacy. >> reporter: the fbi is still working to identify the gunman's motive. >> if evil's going to try to do something horrible, evil's going to do something horrible. >> reporter: some say the shooter showed up seemingly in disguise.

>> the shooter was sitting next to my mother. and so she is the one that -- that recognized that he had a fake beard on and fake sunglasses on. >> it looked so fake and so -- i just kind of kept looking back there. >> reporter: two people suffered minor injuries while ducking for cover. and this is not the first deadly shooting to take place at a church in texas. in november, 2017, a man opened fire on the congregation at a church in sutherland springs killing more than two dozen worshippers before taking his own life. anne-marie? >> all right, laura podesta in new york. thank you. we are learning more about an attack that targeted another religious community. five people were injured in a stabbing attack during a hanukkah celebration in new york. grafton thomas pleaded not -- entered pleas of not guilty on five counts of attempted murder and burglary. he's accused of barging into a

rabbi's home in muncie on saturday night. the seventh night of hanukkah. witnesses say that he pulled a large knife or machete and started swinging. among the five injured was the rabbi's son. police have not yet released a motive. the new york governor, andrew cuomo, called it, quote, an act of domestic terrorism. >> these are people who intend to create mass harm, mass violence, generate fear based on race, color, creed. that is the definition of terrorism. >> the attack comes amid a national rise in anti-semitic incidents and harassment. in the past week in new york city alone, police have received six reports of attacks possibly motivated by anti-jewish bias. >> it went from us seeing random slurs on the street to vandalisms to eventually harassment, outright harassment, outright assault. and eventually these four

incidents of -- of bigger proportions that we see in the last few months. >> thomas' family released a statement overnight saying that he has a long history of mental illness, but no known history of anti-semitism. he's expected back in court on friday. longtime georgia congressman and civil rights icon john lewis is battling stage-four pancreatic consider. the 79-year-old said he was diagnosed this month. the veteran democrat said he'll continue to work while he undergoes treatment in washington, d.c. he said in a message, with god's grace, i will be back on the front lines soon. lewis was elected to congress in 1986. he's the only remaining survivor of the big six group of civil rights activists led by reverend martin luther king jr. in the 1960s. one person is dead after a small plane crashed into a maryland home. this was the scene shortly before 3:00 pm yesterday in new carlton, near washington, d.c.

white smoke is seen pouring from a gaping hole in the hope's -- the home's roof. authorities say the plane had left a nearby airport just minutes before crashing. people in the neighborhood ran outside to see what happened. >> it kind of almost sounded like, you know, when a car accident -- it basically the same thing, you know. it just -- a big like collision. >> the pilot, the only person on the plane, died in the crash. no one was inside the home at the time. an investigation is under way. and a search is under way for the remains of a seventh victim who died in a helicopter crash in hawaii. six bodies have already been recovered. police confirm there were no survivors. the seven had been on a sightseeing tour over the island of kauai last thursday. the chopper crashed on a mountaintop. the passengers include a woman and teenager from wisconsin, a family from switzerland, and the pilot. and a standoff remains over president trump's upcoming impeachment trial in the senate.

it comes as the president ramps up his attacks on house speaker nancy pelosi. ben tracy has the latest. >> reporter: in between rounds of golf at his palm beach club, impeachment is very much on president trump's mind. he tweeted early sunday that crazy nancy pelosi should spend more time in her decaying city and less time on the impeachment hoax. >> city on the central coast of california -- >> reporter: the president also tweeted this video bashing san francisco which is in pelosi's district for its homelessness problem. the president's apparent anger centers around being impeached. pelosi has yet to send the formal articles of impeachment to the senate saying she wants to ensure a fair trial. >> everyone knows it will end in acquittal. >> reporter: some republicans say their minds are made up. others such as louisiana's john kennedy, a staunch supporter of the president, say the american people need to see a fair process. >> i don't want them saying, well, we were just run over by the same truck twice. it was unfair in the house, and it was unfair in the senate.

i want people to think that it was a level playing field. >> reporter: former vice president joe biden is now walking back his earlier comment that he would refuse to testify at the impeachment trial even if subpoenaed by congress. >> i would honor whatever the congress in fact legitimately asked me to do. >> reporter: meanwhile, the white house is closely monitoring activity in north korea where kim jong-un is holding a meeting of his top political leaders. u.s. intelligence officials are preparing for north korea to potentially return to testing missiles capable of hitting the u.s. >> what will be the consequences if north korea resumes either long-range missile tests or nuclear tests? >> you know, i don't want to speculate about what will happen. but we have a lot of tools in our toolkit. >> reporter: in florida, president trump also spoke on the phone with russia's vladimir putin. now the kremlin says that putin called president trump to express his gratitude for u.s. intelligence information that helped prevent a terrorist attack in russia. ben tracy, cbs news, palm beach,

"the new york times" reports the u.s. military launched attacks on iran-backed terrorist forces in iraq and syria. the pentagon says it was in

retaliation for a deadly rocket attack on an iraqi base in kirkuk on friday. an american defense contractor was killed in the attack. secretary of state mike pompeo said it's not the first time the base was targeted. >> the attack that took place against an iraqi facility threatened american forces. this has been going on now for weeks and weeks and weeks. this wasn't the first set of attacks against this particular iraqi facility and others where there were american lives at risk. >> the pentagon told the "times" the air strikes included weapons storage facilities and command posts used to attack american and partner forces. investigators tell cbs news it will be a tough process to determine just what caused a deadly plane crash in louisiana. the private plane crashed minutes after taking off from lafayette regional airport saturday. it burst into a ball of flames in the parking lot. five of the six people on board were killed. one was hospitalized.

witnesses described the scene. >> it just skidded on the concrete at the post office. and then it just went by, and all of a sudden this big explosion. >> the national transportation safety board says no distress call was made from the doomed plane, and there was no flight data recorder on board. the plane was headed for atlanta where the passengers were going to watch the peach bowl. among those killed was sports broadcaster carley mccord, the daughter-in-law of lsu coach steven ensminger. and our cbs station kcal reports another horse has died at santa anita days before racing season was set to kick off there. park officials say a 3-year-old gelding was injured in a freak accident while training thursday morning. the horse was put down. >> i love this sport. i really do. and if there's ways to improve it to make it better for the horses, i would definitely support that. i don't think they should pretty much cancel everything. >> we demand to know why are you

still allowing the killing of horses for $2 bets in the great state of california. why is this still allowed? >> this was the 38th horse to die at the track since last december. according to "usa today," officials at seattle public schools are putting pressure on parents to get their kids vaccinated. the district says students have until january 8th to get updated immunization records or risk missing class. officials are pointing to a washington state law and the state's recently passed bill. they remove the personal and philosophical options to exempt kids from getting a vaccine to fend off the measles, mumps, and rubella. >> any students show up on the 8th and they don't have their records up to date, they'll be put aside in a room, their parents will be contacted to come and collect the students. >> the district is making free clinics available to get kids immunized -- rather, their immunization records up to date. still to come, hashing out a

another state is making recreational marijuana legal in the new year, and california will usher in a landmark privacy law. marc liverman is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, marc. >> reporter: hey, good morning, anne-marie. as 2019 comes to a close, the stock market is still on track for its best year since 2013. the dow jumped 23 points. the s&p rose slightly going up less than 1 point, and the nasdaq lost 15 points. starting wednesday, californians will have the strongest digital privacy rights in u.s. history. the new laws give millions of americans the right to review personal information collected by companies around the world. that includes location tracking and purchase history. they can force these companies to stop selling it. this will create major challenges to big tech companies and could pave the way for a national standard. also starting january 1st, illinois will become the 11th state to legalize recreational marijuana use and sales.

in december, michigan legalized marijuana, selling $4.7 million worth in just three weeks. law enforcement officials are warning people against carrying the product across state lines to other places in the midwest where marijuana is still illegal. and "star wars: episode iv - the rise of skywalker" is still rising at the box office. >> confront your fear. the destiny of a jedi. >> reporter: the latest installment of the popular franchise has earned nearly $363 million in the ten days since its release. it brought in $72 million over the weekend.
