this morning, the united states is urging u.s. citizens to leave iraq immediately. the state department cites heightened tensions in iraq and the e region, and this comes after iran vowed harsh retaliation against the u.s. for the assassination of one of its most powerful military figures. the pentagon confirms that iran's general qassim suleimani is dead. he was killed overnight in a u.s. air strike near baghdad international airport. the attack was authorized by president trump. u.s. officials say suleimani orchestrated attacks on coalition bases in iraq in recent months including one in december that killed an american contractor. laura podesta's here in new york. i imagine there will be fallout. what do we know so far? >> reporter: absolutely. with the death of suleimani, tensions have heightened between the u.s. and iran. a potential outcome could be more conflict throughout the middle east. suleimani is known to have assembled a network of military allies stretching from iran to iraq and syria, all the way to

lebanon. these images from the iraqi government show the aftermath of a u.s. drone strike that killed a top iranian general. overnight, iranian state tv announced the death of general qassim suleimani. the 62-year-old led a special forces unit of iran's elite revolutionary guards. six others were also killed in the strike near baghdad's international airport. the pentagon said president trump directed it. in a statement, the department of defense said suleimani was "activity developing plans to attack american diplomats and service members in iraq and throughout the region." secretary of state mike pompeo tweeted this video with the caption "iraqis, iraqis dancing for freedom thankful general suleimani is no more." president trump tweeted an american flag. the statement from the pentagon

claims suleimani approved this week's violent protests at the u.s. embassy in baghdad. that prompted the u.s. military to deploy hundreds of troops to the middle east. defense secretary mark esper said there are i indications militias loyal to iran are planning further attacks. >> do i think they may do something? yes. and they will likely regret it. >> reporter: iran's defense minister released a statement saying, quote, a crushing revenge will be taken for suleimani's assassination. and police and mayors in major cities are already responding to those threats. the lapd tweeted that they are communicating with local, federal, and international law enforcement, and new york city's mayor bill de blasio said the nypd is focusing its security on key new york locations that might be targeted by terrorists. anne-marie? >> laura podesta here in new york. thank you so much, laura. some democratic presidential candidates are criticizing the killing of the iranian general. joe biden says president trump

tossed a stick of dynamite into a tinderbox. elizabeth warren called the move reckless, and bernie sanders accused mr. trump of putting america on the path to another endless war. meanwhile, julian castro has dropped out of the race for president. he made the announcement on twitter yesterday. >> given the circumstances of this campaign season, i have determined that it simply isn't our time. >> castro said he'll continue his fight for america. his departure means there are now 14 democrats running to defeat president trump in november. some of them are raising a lot of money. vermont senator bernie sanders raised $34.5 million in the fourth quarter of 2019. pete buttigieg, whose time as mayor of south bend ended this week, brought in nearly $25 million. former vice president joe biden has his best quarter yet raising close to $23 million. and businessman andrew yang collected $16.5 million.

they're all dwarfed by president trump's $46 million haul this quarter. his team credits the impeachment saga. mr. trump now has over $100 million in the bank.raliere fir expected to get worse. government officials are warning this upcoming weekend is likely to be the most dangerous yet. high winds and temperatures over 100 degrees are expected. a disaster has been declared, clearing the way for one of the largest evacuations in australia's history involving as many as 140,000 people. let's look at the stunning satellite images. thick smoke originating from southeast australia is spotted moving toward new zealand. we have the latest. >> reporter: the new year has brought new challenges to the people of australia. the country is facing continue unprecedented wildfire crisis as flames and fear continue to spread.

>> in the thick of it, we thought this could be it. >> reporter: in victoria, an overhead view shows the fiery chaos below. road closures have led to fuel and food shortages in parts of the southeast. residents waiting hours to enter a grocery store. >> everyone's on edge. >> reporter: in sydney, the smoke is making it difficult to breathe. 100 miles down the road, it's a race to get out despite a traffic standstill. on the beach, military crews carry out forced evacuations after orders from the prime minister. >> the priority today is fighting fires and evacuating, getting people to safety. what is incredibly important is that we continue to focus on these very important tasks. >> reporter: there is no end in sight. high winds and warmer temperatures are expected to intensify the flames in the coming days. cbs news. there's been an arrest in las vegas in an alleged abduction. captured on a home surveillance camera.

we have a warning for you -- some of this video is a little graphic. carter evans reports. >> reporter: the chilling video shows a woman frantically running to a stranger's home for help. >> stop, darnell! >> reporter: when her attacker catches up, he throws her to the ground and kicks her. the struggle continues as the man drags the woman by her hair to a white car in the street. the altercation was all caught on a las vegas home security camera just before 1:00 a.m. new year's day. no one was home at the time, but the homeowner saw the video remotely and sent it to police. how important was that video in solving the crime? >> it was absolutely very important. we had a name that matched. >> reporter: during the assault, the victim says her attacker's name -- darnell. >> stop, darnell! >> the fact that she said his name on camera made a big difference? >> it made a big difference, a huge difference. >> reporter: it was the clue detectives needed. >> there was a call at approximately 3:45 in the morning.

of salt lake city captured on camera, but this one was planned. the utah department of transportation triggered it yesterday. they used an explosive device on top of a mountain. officials start dozens of snow slides each winter to prevent larger, more dangerous ones. this avalanche closed a highway leading to two of utah's most popular ski resorts for about three hours. the coachella music festival unveils its lineup, and lawmakers challenge roe vs. wade. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the new york times" reports that more than 200 republican members of congress are urging the supreme court to consider overturning the 1973 landmark roe v. wade ruling. it estimated -- it rather established a woman's right to an abortion. yesterday, 39 republican senators and 166 house members were joined by two centrist house democrats in signing the friend of the court brief. they're asking the justices to

uphold a 2014 louisiana law severely restricting access to abortions and to overturn another landmark ruling from 1992. the high court is expected to hear the louisiana case this spring. cbs dallas station ktvt reports a texas judge denied a temporary injunction for the family of a sick 11-month-old girl and sided with the hospital that wants to remove her life support. tinslee lewis has been hospital eased at koch children's medical center since she was born premature in february. she was born with a rare heart defect and suffers from chronic lung disease and severe high blood pressure. doctors say that they've done everything they can for her, and her condition will never improve. >> just changing her diapers, turning her over so that she doesn't develop bedsores. all the things we have to do to keep her alive and keep her better or keep her well is causing her pain and causing her suffering. and we don't want to do that any longer.

>> the girl's family is appealing the ruling. the hospital says it will continue treating her while the legal battle continues. "the miami herald" reports police detained rapper dababy for questioning in connection with a robbery. miami police say the 28-year-old grammy-nominated artist whose real name is jonathan kirk was not arrested or charged with any crimes. he was taken into custody yesterday. kirk later tweeted that he was harassed by police in an attempt to make a bad example out of him. he is from charlotte, north carolina, and was reportedly arrested there last week for marijuana possession. and "rolling stone" says dababy is slated in the lineup for this year's coachella festival in california. the headliners are rage against the machine, travis scott, and frank ocean. the festival announced the full lineup yesterday which also includes lanna del rey, lil nas x, calvin harris, and run the jewels. coachella will take place on back-to-back weekends april 10th to the 12th and april 17th to the 19th.

on the cbs "money watch," some fruit of the future and why police say that you should not abbreviate the year 2020. marc liverman is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, marc. >> reporter: hey, good morning, anne-marie. today it's all about the consumer. automakers will release motor vehicle sales data for december. meanwhile, stocks closed higher yesterday led by gains in technology companies. the dow rallied 330 points. the s&p was up 27 points. and the nasdaq added 119 points. u-haul plans to stop interviewing and hiring nicotine users including people who use e-cigarettes and vaping products. according to the "arizona republic," the company approved the nicotine-free policy set to go into effect on february 1st in more than 20 states where the company operates.

u-haul says it wants to foster a culture of wellness at the company. people hired before the policy goes into effect won't be affected. the first day of legal recreational legal marijuana in illinois sparked big sales bringing in roughly $3.2 million. there were more than 77,000 transactions for pot purchase when the law took effect on new year's day. dispensaries reported long lines and expect them to continue through the weekend. some sales revenue will go toward neighborhood development grants. illinois is the 11th state to allow the use and sale of marijuana for recreational purposes. an israeli-based designer has invented 3d-printed synthetic fruits that are edible and contain essential minerals and vitamins. the so-called neo fruits are made with cellulose, a compound that forms the structure of living plants. the artificial fruits also contain a liquid mixture that gives the fruit nutrients and
