francisco, one of the larger gatherings against the airstrike. >> reporter: a demonstration march in the streets of san francisco ended here at the u.n. plaza. they say the u.s. cannot afford another war. it was passionate. colorful. hundreds of demonstrators gathered in downtown san francisco to solidify their demand. >>repoer: ey y th stop war. ve rnment should spend money on domestic issues, not on international affairs. >> look at our streets in san francisco. we have to do something about our interior. >> we can't afford to feed and give healthcare and house our own people. how can we afford to go overseas? >> reporter: some demonstrators say president donald trump is using the iranian airstrike as

a distraction. >> he's using this whole warmongering approach to what he is doing, to smokescreen his impeachment. >> reporter: they believe are marching together, their opposition will pressure lawmakers to stop anymore military option in iran. >> you can't stay home, come out and fight. >> trump pants out now. >> reporter: parts of mission and mark streets were blocked out. overall, it was a very peaceful protest. >> more protests were held in other major cities from san jose to chicago to washington, dc. more than 70 demonstrations from coast-to-coast. there were also major protests in baghdad with thousands chanting america is the great satan. some of the demonstrators burned american flags, and vowed to avenge the death of the military leader.

the trump administration insists the first strike was critically important. >> the american people can no that the decision that president trump made to take qassem soleimani down saved american lives. >> while a number of republicans applauded the decision, democrats say congress should have been alerted. back ithe bay area, a man that tried to ignite a gas pump in san jose was shot and wounded. it happened at the arco gas station on granby road. not far from the east ridge mall. the violent confrontation lasted just 10 minutes. our reporter has the details. >> reporter: a male had driven away with the pump still attached to his vehicle. he has since returned, but now he has a lighter in his hand. i don't know what he's going to do with the lighter. >> the initial 911 call came in around 7:15 a.m. it appears the suspect may have been causing trouble for nearly a half hour before the first officer arrived. >> that mail has been there for 30 minutes picking the pump up

with a lighter. try according to the police radio traffic, officers tried to talk to the suspect to get him to stop his bizarre, and potentially dangerous behavior. >> is unresponsive. he's not talking to me, and he looks like he is shoving paper into the end of the gas pump. >> reporter: even though the suspect wasn't cooperating, it appeared officer had found a way to neutralize the threat. >> just shut off the pump. >> copy, the pump has been shut off. >> reporter: less than 15 seconds after officers radioed that the suspect had begun to chase them, this frantic call followed. >> shots fired, shots fired. >> shots fired, suspect is down entrances blocked off. >> throughout the morning, investigators collected evidence at the crime scene,

trying to piece together exactly what happened. it was the first officer involved shooting in san jose of the new year. >> looks like he had a metal pole in his hands, it is still laying next to >> reporter: the police department says they plan m.to i hold a press conference. that will be on monday. late this afternoon san jose police confirmed they recovered a weapon, a metal pole at the scene. t.ey also say officer d ie suspc tono the suspect is in stable condition, and the two officers who fired their guns are on paid leave. >> a high-speed chase and with the arrest of a 20-year-old suspect. it happened on thursday night. the suspect was located in a stolen car in orinda. he drove to san leandro, where police tried to pull him over. he drove to the bayfront park station in san leandro. got out of the car, and tried to get away on foot. eventually, he tried to hide by the tracks, but he was found

and arrested. the man faces multiple charges and is being held without bail. >> palo alto police are looking for a man who robbed a woman on university avenue last month. they released the sketch of the suspect today. police say the woman was walking when a man riding a bike approached her from the back. grabbed her purse, and dragged the victim several feet. if you have any information, call palo alto police. a vigil will be held tomorrow for a man killed in a brazen laptop theft in oakland. friend say the 34-year-old man died on his birthday. police say that on new year's eve, the man chased two men after they snatched his laptop inside i starbucks in oakland. tomorrow morning, the community will hold a vigil for him at that starbucks at 11:30. police have arrested two men, that's one of them. they are facing murder and robbery charges. he's accused of driving the getaway car that hit and killed the victim. a 21-year-old faces charges

, and police are still looking for one more suspect. palo alto police are stepping up patrols around places of worship after an act of vandalism at the city's oldest lecture. a graffiti tag or hit university a and e zion church on saturday. crawling messages cursing god, leading the congregation on edge. the church is planning a special service tomorrow in response. inviting the whole community attend. police say they are keeping a close eye on the church and a half a dozen others. they're asking anyone who sees anything suspicious to give them a call. >> newly released video is shedding light on a troubling public health danger. our reporter has more t abinouf at the county's largest homeless camp. encampment, and the effort to try to find some kind of answers out here.

the wildfire situation in australia is getting worse. with some of the largest blazes now combining. firefighters there will be getting some help from california. >> reporter: three fires join together overnight in australia. creating a single wildfire covering 23 square miles. that's bigger than manhattan. but, that's just one fire. er around 23,000 d is square miles.

>> on monday, 20 veteran california firefighters will deploy for australia as the first u.s. ground crew to help battle those fires. here's a live look at sfo. a china r flight landed safely after a bird strike. officials say pilots were told to dr. fuel to lighten the pain. seven people were on board the cargo plane. in southern california, a pilot was killed after a small plane crash near the 14 freeway in santa clarita. it happened this morning, shortly after 10:00. one lane of the northbound freeway was temporarily closed as emergency crews responded and found the aircraft completely engulfed in flames. ntsb says the plane was home built, and the pilot was the only one on board. we didn't hear anything, all of a sudden we saw a big black plume of smoke. we thought oh my gosh, how can there be a fire. it ended up being just hitting the tree, and going right into

the side of that mountain. >> no word yet on what caused the plane to crash. back in the bay area, the library says it might be days before its' systems are back online. following a ransomware attack. that attack shut down the online network that links the library branches together. officials say patron records are stored on an unaffected server. they probably compromised. webrary branches will be open theirer t regular hours while t system recovers, but some services might be unavailable. law enforcement is trying to track down the hacker. the bay area is seeing a shortage of bus drivers. they began to warn riders they were planning to shut down another route. right now, the agency has 50 open driver positions. 15 of those will be filled later this month when recruit training ends. meanwhile, the vta has 30

vacant spots, and light rail driver positions open. a big section of market street is going to go car free by the end of this month. if part of san francisco's vision zero project. starting y januar the 2.2 mile stretch from stewart to vanness will be off-limits to private vehicles. including ride-share's, buses, emergency and commercial vehicles, paratransit and taxis are exempt. private cars will still be able to cross market street. all right, in the ather departmentwe, today was sunny. fa rathinas in the nny. forecast. there's a minor threat from time to time, but that's about it. 2020 is ofto a dry start. here is a look over san francisco. here's a different perspective with a san francisco shop from treasure island. concord right now is 59 degrees. oakland, well, they are all in the 50s.
