-- captions by vitac -- www.vitac.com good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. i'm anne-marie green. president trump is expected to make a statement this morning after iran launched missile attacks against american troops in iraq. the pentagon confirmed iran fired more than a dozen ballistic missiles at two iraqi military bases housing american bases. images of the alleged strikes were captured on iranian state tv. there was no immediate word of casualties, though. u.s. officials are assessing the damage and an elite wing of iranian military said the attacks were hard revenge for the death of its top general in a u.s. drone attack last week. this morning iran's supreme leader called it a slap of the face. iran's foreign minister said the attacks were legitimate self-defense adding washington's assessment to retaliate shouldn't be based on illusions. president trump was briefed on

the rocket attacks and tweeted all is well. catherine johnson is in washington. what's the reaction so far from the white house? >> reporter: good morning. we know last night president trump met with top defense officials at the white house to try to figure out a strategy on how the u.s. will respond to these attacks. we know secret service has beefed up its presence around the president as well as around the white house and other security measures have gone into place in other government buildings here in washington. as we await the president's response. iran launched more than a dozen missiles overnight. iraqi bases housing u.s. troops. iranian state tv said it was revenge for last week's killing of general qassem soleimani. he was buried hour after the attack. following a massive multi-city funeral procession filled with anti-american statements. one base was targeted in erbil in iraq. >> after that we also heard helicopters in the sky and just a little while ago we heard a fighter jet overhead.

>> the other was at an airbase home to about 1500 personnel. >> we're prepared to attack if we have to. >> reporter: earlier in the day president trump sent a warning to iran. >> if iran does anything that they shouldn't be doing they are going to be suffering the consequences. >> reporter: after the attacks the president tweeted all is well and so far so good. iran's foreign minister reacted on social media saying quote iran took and concluded measures in self-defense and do not seek escalation or war. >> very simple what we want from iran. stop trying to kill us. >> some u.s. lawmakers hope both sides show restraint. >> this could spiral out of control very quickly. >> as do many iranian-americans. >> i feel for the troops that are going there right now. i feel for their families. i feel both sides, the people, the public, didn't want to have any war. >> reporter: iranian state tv

says iran other targets if the u.s. responds. again we're expecting president trump to make a statement on these attacks at some point this morning. no official time has been given just yet. we also expect this to be the opening topic here on capitol hill when the senate convenes at 10:00 a.m. >> thank you so much. talk to us about the significance of these two bases, why the iranians choose these specific targets? >> reporter: rocket attacks on iraqi bases and u.s. bases are fairly common in iraq. the attacks are generally carried out by a militia with backing from iran but this is different because iran is just flat out taking credit for the attacks, they are not hiding behind proxy forces as they have in the past. as for bases, the airbase house 1500 u.s. and coalition forces. president trump visited that same base in december 2018. vice president mike pence was there this past november.

it's a huge base that the u.s. has spent hundreds of millions of dollars to develop making it an attractive target for iran. meanwhile the base near erbil in northern iraq is in the kurdish region. the u.s. worked closely with kurdish fighters. the missiles were fired from inside iran. iranian state tv claims american helicopters and military equipment were quote severely damaged in the attack. however, we've not received confirmation from the pentagon. >> before we let you go, thousands of people took to the streets for general qassem soleimani's funeral. there was a stampede there. we're learning the death toll has risen to 56. have we learned any more. >> reporter: it's unclear what prompted that stampede. but video is frightening. some people are lying, apparently lifeless on the ground.

their face covered with clothing. people in the background were crying out to god. in all 213 people were injured in that stampede. yesterday's missile strikes happened a few hours after the crowds mourned qassem soleimani at his funeral. in a speech this morning, iran's supreme leader said qassem soleimani's killing showed iran's revolution is alive. >> laura podesta in new york, thank you so much. so on capitol hill lawmakers are reacting to iran's missile attack on u.s. troops. house speaker nancy pelosi voiced concern tweeting america and world cannot afford war. republican senator lindsey graham appeared on fox news saying president trump has the right too hit back at iran. >> this was an act of war, sean. by any reasonable definition. the missiles were launched from iran at targets inside of iraq housing u.s. military personnel. the president has all the authority he needs under article ii to respond and how to respond is yet to be determined.

>> not all republicans agree. senator rand paul tweeted we need to stop the escalation before it leads to another endless war in the middle east. he added the administration needs to bring any discussion on -- of war on iran to the american people and congress. to another developing story in tehran where a ukrainian jet crashed. killing all 176 people on board. iranian officials said the plane took off this morning from iran's main airport when a fire struck one of the engines. the ukrainian international flight was headed to i can eukr. the state-run news agency says the pilot of the aircraft lost control. the crash killed iranian, canadian, ukrainian, swedish, british, afghan and german nationals. mitch mcconnell says he has the votes to start president trump's impeachment trial as soon as house speaker nancy

pelosi releases the articles of impeachment. mitch mcconnell's announcements means he can bypass for now democratic demands for new witness testimony including from former national security advisor john bolton. >> they refuse to treat president trump the same way we treated president clinton. what was good enough for president clinton at an impeachment trial should have been good enough for president trump. >> the senate can't start a trial until the charges against mr. trump are delivered by the house. but pelosi said she won't do that until the rules of a senate trial are spelled out. puerto rico is bracing for more after shocks following the island's most powerful earthquake in more than 100 years. 6.4 magnitude quake hit the southwestern coast yesterday morning. at least one person is dead. millions are without power. puerto rico is now under a state of emergency. one person living on the island described what the earthquake

was like. >> basically it was a horrible noise. i don't know like something exploded. after that everything started shaking. between the shake and breaking of everything i didn't know what was worse. >> southern puerto rico was shaken by smaller quakes late yesterday afternoon. there have been over 900 tremors in the last ten days. in australia thunderstorms and showers are bringing some relief to firefighters battling deadly bushfires along the country's east coast. but storms are also raising concerns that more fires could be sparked by lightning strikes when hot and windy conditions return. about 2300 firefighters are consolidating containment lines around more than 100 fires in south wales. the fires have killed at least 26 people. so coming up on the morning news now a connecticut man is arrested and charged with murdering his wife.

52-year-old fotis dulos was arrested yesterday at his home in farmington, connecticut. his ex-girlfriend michelle troconis and his friend kent mawhinney were arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit murder. 51-year-old jennifer dulos disappeared last may after dropping her kids at school. er body has not been found. his attorney says his client is innocent. >> we are confident of our case and confident about our odds. we said long ago bring it on. they did. we're here and ready. >> court records released yesterday showed detectives used dna and circumstantial evidence to file charges. >> our spokane, washington affiliate krem says a second person involved in an avalanche at an idaho ski report was found dead. five people were rescued. they suffered minor injuies. sheriff' office said it received a report of what could be three separate avalanches on the mountain.

the resort has not confirmed that. an avalanche warning has been in effect in the higher elevations for parts of northern idaho. the san diego union tribune reports duncan hunter submitted his resignation. the 43-year-old republican plans to resign next monday. last month hunter pleaded guilty to conspiring with his wife to illegally use $150,000 in campaign funds on personal expenses. hunter was accused of using the money for things like family vacation, groceries, extramarital affairs and air fare for a pet rabbit. he's expected to be sentenced in march. still to come, girl scouts have a sweet idea. we'll show you their new cookie that feature baked in messages of inspiration. inspiration.
