tree needed to grow the pfect you. it's monday, january 13th, 2020. this is the "cbs morning news". rising tensions. protests break out in iran in the aftermath of the airline tragedy outside tehran. this as questions arise over the justification of killing iran's top general. deadly weather. at least a dozen people are killed as storms march across several states. and bracing for the blast. a volcano in the philippines sends people running for safety as lava starts to flow. the philippines good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with protests in iran

and clash with security forces. demonstrators are angered over the mistaken downing of a jetliner by iran last week. tensions flared as thousands of protesters flooded the streets of tehran over the weekend. police reportedly fired tear gas, rubber bullets and live ammunition to break up the demonstrators. last week's plane crash killed 176 people. president trump issued an urgent message to iran on twitter warning don't kill your protesters. canadian prime minister justin trudeau spoke at a memorial in edmonton yesterday honoring the 57 canadians killed in last week's crash. he said we will not rest until there's justice and accountability. naomi ruchim has more. this all comes over president trump's decision to take out iran's top general.

>> reporter: the official government explanation as to why the u.s. launched that attack is inconsistent. president trump justified the attack saying there was an imminent threat to american service members and diplomats. but his defense secretary says he didn't see specific evidence. and now some members of congress are asking why they had been left in the dark. >> he didn't say specific piece of evidence. >> reporter: defense secretary mark esper said he hadn't seen any hard evidence to back up president trump's claim on fox news last week. >> i can reveal i believe it would have been four embassies. >> reporter: the iranian general qassem soleimani was killed because he was targeting four u.s. embassies. >> i didn't see one with regard the to four embassies. what i'm saying i share the president's view probably my expectation they were going to go after our embassies. >> reporter: members of congress were briefed last week on the justification for the drone strike that killed qassem soleimani. >> we got less detailed information than president trump shared with laura ingram. >> reporter: democrats and some

republicans say the evidence they've seen doesn't back up the white house. >> they are overstating and exaggerating what the intelligence shows. >> don't know where or when is imminent. that to me does seem inconsistent. >> reporter: the senate is expected to vote at a measure to limit president trump's ability to wage further military action against iran. defense secretary esper did say the u.s. had information that a broad scale attack would happen within a matter of days. he's also pushing back on skeptical congress members saying they should be cautious of the message they are sending to american troops. iran's supreme leader is blaming the conflict on the united states. thank you. two u.s. soldiers were killed when their vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb in afghanistan. the victims have been identified as a 29-year-old from virginia and a 21-year-old man from illinois.

they were killed in the southern province of kandahar. the soldiers were conducting operations as part of nato's resolution support mission. the incident is under investigation. the taliban has claimed responsibility. back home, house speaker nancy pelosi is expected this week to deliver the articles of impeachment against president trump to the senate. pelosi said democrats will decide when to send over the documents following a closed door meeting tomorrow. yesterday she defended her decision to hold the articles for weeks saying that she would not submit them until senate majority leader mitch mcconnell outlined specifics about the trial process. president trump tweeted yesterday the impeachment trial in the senate should not even be allowed to proceed. . trump has mained he did nothing wrong when he asked ukrainian officials to investigate joe biden. at least 12 people are dead after a weekend of brutal storms stretching halfway across the country. some died on the icy roads. others were swept away by floods.

others were killed by the high winds whipped up by tornadoes. meg oliver reports on the recovery efforts. >> reporter: tornadoes ripped through at least three states this weekend. in carrollton, alabama, larry jones raced for cover as his roof peeled away. >> definitely scared. i thought we were done. i went to the window to see what i could see. >> reporter: governors in mississippi and arkansas called states of emergency after heavy rains, flooding and fierce rains toppled trees. icy conditions in bentonville, arkansas made driving treacherous. in the southeast the storm left a trail of damage from texas to georgia. power outages left tens of thousands of people in the dark up north fast-moving floods near saginaw, michigan stranded drivers. >> i was following the semi. i didn't see the water at all. >> reporter: in chicago powerful

waves swamped paths along lake michigan shutting down parts of lake shore drive creating a dangerous winter attraction. >> we're trying to keep a handle on it, making sure people are safe. staying away from dangerous waves. we don't want anyone swept out. >> reporter: as parts of the country suffer, the northeast saw bright sunshine and high temperatures. golf courses and ski resorts were both open for business in massachusetts with temperatures well above-normal. here in new york city the mercury reached a balmy 66 degrees sunday. a dramatic change is on the way. by next weekend temperatures are expected to plunge with rain and snow in the forecast. another cold front is hitting the northwest with plenty of snow. there are several weather systems in play across the country. winter storm warnings and advisories are posted for shing. just north of seattle.

the system is expected to drop several feet of snow in washington state and oregon. on the oregon coast another weather phenomenon has turned deadly. a father and two kids were on the beach watching the king tides caused by the sun and moon's gravitational pull. they were all swept out to sea. one child died, another is still missing. only the father survived. second most active volcano in the philippines has erupted. yesterday plumes of smoke were spotted spewing from the tall volcano south of manila. intense lightning was captured. raging around the crater. officials say the volcano is gushing lava. ople nearby were ordered to evacuate. dozens of towns and cities were covered in ash. flights were ordered grounded yesterday but there is word partial flights have resumed at manila international airport. officials warn eruptions could last months or even years. today top members of the british royal family will meet following last week's announcement that the duke and

duchess of sussex intend to step back from senior royal duties. queen elizabeth will discuss with prince charles and his sons what comes next for prince harry and meghan markle. >> reporter: the queen carried on as usual on sunday morning. on monday the royal property will host crisis talks as she meets grandsons harry and william and son charles face-to-face for the first time following harry and meghan's bomb shell announcement they want to step back from public duties. the queen wants the situation wrapped up in days not weeks but tensions are already running high. britain's "sunday times" is quoting prince william saying i put my arm around my brother all our lives and i can't do that any more. we're separate entities. william's sadness is eclipsed by the tabloid press which continues to rage at the couple. but opinion polls are on harry and meghan's side.

battled a massive six alarm fire that ripped through a new jersey town. authorities say that at least eight buildings were impacted including apartment complexes and local businesses. the fire area was so large that it was showing on the radar of the national weather service. officials believe the fire started on a piece of new construction. everyone in the immediate area was evacuated and one firefighter suffered minor injuries. millions of people in ontario, canada get a nuclear scare and gun violence breaks out at a school basketball game. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstands. our dallas station is reporting a 15-year-old boy has turned himself in after a shooting at a high school basketball game. the shooting happened outside the arena after a fight. an 18-year-old and a police officer were wounded but they are expected to survive. the suspect is charged with aggravated assault. the hill says former president barack obama is calling for americans to send their support to puerto rico.

in a tweet sunday mr. obama praised the island's quote enduring spirit and says it's up to us to pull together for one another once again. on saturday puerto rico was hit with a magnitude 5.9 earthquake. it came four days after the island's strongest quake in centuries. several nonprofits are taking donations. "new york times" is reporting on an alarming miscommunication in ontario, canada. millions of people there got an emergency alert sunday warning of an incident at a local nuclear facility. but 90 minutes after the loud screech emanated from phones around the province another loud screech was accompanied by another message saying never mind. the first alert was sent in error. leading to fresh concerns about the dangers of false alarms. still ahead now an osc pred. we'll show you the big winners at last night's critics choice awards. w you the big winners at last night's critics choice

disputes. the news was reported by the "wall street journal". the talks were abandoned at the start of the trump administration when a trade conflict between the two countries escalated. the phase one trade deal between u.s. and china will be signed this wednesday. boeing board chairman david calhoun will take over as ceo toda grounded worldwide after two crashes of the jet killed 346 people. treasury secretary steve mnuchkin said boeing as problems could slow u.s. growth by half in 2020. the movie "1917" has dethroned "star wars" at the box office. >> i have a brother at the 2nd battalion. >> yes, sir. they are walking into a trap. >> reporter: it brought in an estimated $36.5 million in north america in its first weekend of

an alaska man survived a bone chilling ordeal. he spent more than 20 days in the remote alaskan wilderness in subzero temperatures. tyson steele was forced to flee when his cabin burned down. the 30-year-old was stranded with no way to get help. alaska state troopers located him on thursday after friends requested a welfare check saying they had not heard from him in weeks. they spotted steele from a helicopter waving for help. he carved an s.o.s. message in the snow which he darkened with ash. in the nfl playoffs, the houston texans were up 24-0 over the kansas city chiefs and then things changed. >> it's picked up in the air. picked up in the air. >> that mistake off the second quarter punt return led to a touchdown which brought the chiefs within three.
