good morning from the cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you, i'm anne-marie green. we begin with a night of contenders hoping to unseat president trump in november. they're squaring off in their final debate before the iowa caucuses, less than three weeks away. bernie sanders, joe biden, elizabeth warren, pete buttigieg, amy klobuchar, and tom steyer have secured a place on stage in des moines. the debate comes just one day a booker announced that he's dropping out of the race. skyler henry is in des moines. >> reporter: tonight's democratic presisidential showdn at drake university features six of 12 candidates still standing. the smallest lineup to take the debate stage yet. >> now is where iowans are weighing what to do, that famous thumb on the scale that you have. >> reporter: a poll released over the weekend shows vermont senator bernie sanders leading the pack in iowa, followed closely by massachusetts senator elizabeth warren.

former south bend, indiana, mayor pete buttigieg and former vice president joe biden. >> these are all well-seasoned decrats wiwatching closely for a candidate they believe could beat president trump. >> in iowa, we have the opportunity to vet candidates unlike any other voters in any other state save new hampshire. we really get to put these candidates to a test. >> reporter: the debate will be th o voters to compare the candidates side by side before their caucuses on february 3rd. senator amy klobuchar and billionaire businessman tom steyer will join sanders, warren, biden, and buttigieg on stage. no minority candidate will be there even though andrew yang and former massachusetts governor duval patrick are still in the 2020 contest. >> does that resonate to folks that you're speaking with at all? >> oh, absolutely. even iowans are seriously thinking how did we get here with that kind of lineup. >> reporter: senator cory booker

suspended his campaign monday after failing to reach the poll numbers to qualify for tonight's debate. >> ahead on "cbs this morning," senator cory booker will be in studio 57 to discuss why he suspended his campaign. and now to breaking developments from iran. in a televised speech this idid those respe dngrainian paengea. hassan rouhani called the shoot-down an unforgivable error and assured it will not happen again. iran's judiciary announced it has arrested some people for their role in the crash. this comes amid a debate on capitol hill over curbin president trump's military action in iran. we have more. naomi, what's happening in the senate? >> reporter: anne-marie, senate majority leader mitch mcconnell says he opposes a senate resolution limiting the president's power on military action. he also said a vote on that measure would happen soon.

there appears to be support on both sides of the aisle, though, as the proposal was co-sponsored by two republicans. >> innocents bear the brunt -- >> reporter: justin trudeau blames the military escalation between the u.s. and iran for the downing of a civilian plane that killed 176 people. >> if there was no escalation recently in the region, those canadians would be home with their families. >> reporter: 57 canadians are among the dead. iran mistakenly shot down the plane shortly after it attacked al asad air base. no u.s. troops were killed. they took shelter as iran launched to nearly a dozen ballistic missiles. >> we held one another. i still can't fathom that no one was hurt. >> reporter: the barrage was in retaliation for the killing of iran general qassem soleimani. >> the number-one terrorist in the world by every account. >> reporter: the administration claims it killed him to prevent an imminent ck.

>> reporter: yesterday, president trump tweeted "it doesn't really matter." cbs news has confirmed he authorized a strike on s as early as last summer if iran was responsible for an american death. that came late last month in a rocket attack on an iraqi military base. >> the president's foreign soon debate a war powers resolution aimed at limiting further escalation with iran. republican majority leader mitch mcconnell will vote no. >> we appear to have restored a measure of deterrence in the middle east. so let's not screw it up. >> reporter: the house passed a similar measure last week. meantime, the justification for that attack in iran seems to be a moving target. both secretary of state mike pompeo and attorney general william barr are now implying that the attack was part of a broader goal to deter iran's dangerous regime. that is quite different from the

threat of an imminent attack. other than president trump's mention of a potential strike four u.s. embassies, the specific evidence the administration is willing to share is slim. anne-marie? >> naomi ruckham. very much. >> thank you. 21 military students from saudi arabia were expelled from the u.s. overnight after an investigation into a deadly shooting at a pensacola naval base. the attack last month was apparently motivated by terrorism. three american troops were killed. katherine herridge has this report. this was an act of terrorism. >> reporter: attorney general william barr said muhammad sayeed alshamrani was motivated by jihadist idealogy. >> the shooter posted a message on september 11th of this year stating the countdown has begun. >> reporter: the fbi investigation indicates that the shooter acted alone. however, 21 saudi nationals who trained at u.s. bases are being kicked out of the country.

their social media accounts turned up postings with jihadist material and child pornography. >> i have one navy officer shot -- appears multiple times. >> reporter: the fbi also provided harrowing details of the attack. the december 6th shooting at the pensacola air station lasted 15 minutes, with 180 rounds of ammunition. the saudi gunman killed three american sailors and wounded eight other people before police killed him. two weeks before the aviation student had visited new york city's 9/11 memorial. >> the shooter fired shots at pictures of the current u.s. president and a former u.s. president, and a witness at the scene recounted that he made statements critical of american military actions overseas. >> reporter: two iphones were recovered at the scene. one in the gunman's car and one near his body that he had deliberately put a bullet through. the fbi is now asking apple for help unlocking the phones. >> it is very important for us

to know with whom and about what the shooter was communicating before he died. >> that was katherine herridge reporting. now to president trump's impeachment trial. two republican senators tell cbs news that majority leader mitch mcconnell is telling his republican conference the trial will start next tuesday and that id last aleast three to five weeks. the ground rules are still being negotiated.deite the president nnell's pport for a h proposal from a small group of republican senators to do just that. >> the president shouldn't have to go through this. he did nothing wrong. >> reporter: on twitter monday, president trump called impeachment the most unfair witch-hunt in the history of congress. >> dismissing is a cover-up. they will have to be accountable for not having a fair trial. >> reporter: house speaker nancy pelosi is expected to choose house managers for the senate trial after pelosi consults with her caucus tuesday. sometime this week the house

for a smile that's 4 shades visibly whiter. colgate optic white. whitening that works. this morning, a volcano in the philippines is showing no signs of slowing down as it spewed lava into the sky. about 50 volcanic earthquakes were detected today. more than 30,000 have fled the area. clouds of ash reached the capital, manila, 40 miles away. there were no reports of any deaths or major damage, and officials warn that more dangerous eruptions could happen at any time. back at home now, the oscar nominations are being criticized for lacking diversity, and the astros pay big for a cheating scandal. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." cbs houston affiliate khou reports the houston astros fired general manager jeff luhnow and manager aj hinch after they were suspended by the major league baseball for cheating. an mlb investigation confirmed

the astros stole signs from opposing teams during the team's run to the 2017 world series title and again the next season. the astros used a video feed from a center field camera to spy on the opposing catcher's signs to pitchers. astros players banged on a trash can to tell batters what kind of pitch was coming. major league baseball said hinch was aware of the system but did not bring it to the attention of luhnow. >> neither one of them started this, but neither one of them did anything about it. and that's how we came to the conclusion. >> the astros were also fined $5 million and will forfeit first and second-round draft picks this year and next. current boston red sox manager alex cora could also face discipline. mlb said he developed the sign-stealing system when he was the astros' bench coach. "the vancouver sun" says queen elizabeth gave her blessing to prince harry and

sparked an explosion and swallowed a bus and pedestrian in china. the hole was about 32-feet wide. it happened outside a hospital in shining. an investigation is under way to determine what caused the sinkhole. on the cbs "money watch" now, the u.s. makes a concession to china ahead of a trade deal, and amazon cracks down on counterfeits. diane king hall has that and more from the new york stock exchange. good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. big banks like jpmorgan and wells fargo are slated to release quarterly earnings data. meantime, stocks rallied yesterday driven by easing tensions between the u.s. and iran. the dow was up 83 points. the nasdaq gained 95. the s&p 500 added 22 points. the trump administration says china should no longer be designated as a currency manipulator. the action comes with the u.s. and china expected to sign a phase-one trade deal in

washington tomorrow. e prinar iludes seion intended to prevent currency to gain trade advantages. the trump administration branded china's a en china as a currency manipulator five months ago. the first time since 1994 under the clinton administration. starting today, microsoft will stop providing free security updates for windows 7. that means computers using that system will be more vulnerable to malware and hacking. users who want to protect their computers need to upgrade to windows 10. they may also need to buy new computers. that's because older machines might not be compatible with windows 10. and amazon is reportedly ramping up counterfeit reporting to law enforcement. that's according to a "reuters" report. an effort to fight fakes listed on its site. the action comes as amazon faces growing criticism over how it handles the sale of counterfeit products on its platform. previously amazon would have flagged counterfeit sellers to authorities only when it felt it had enough data for police to investigate the perpetrator. anne-marie?
