good morning. i'm in for anne-marie green. in the senate the debate over rules for president trump's impeachment trial stretched well past midnight before finally wrapping up. the republican controlled chamber rejected several amendments proposed by the democrats. that included a subpoena for testimony from john bolton. president trump is set to return to washington today after attending an economic conference in davos, switzerland. catherine johnson is on capitol hill where things wrapped up hours ago. catherine what trial rules did the senators agree on? >> reporter: as you mentioned despite democrats best efforts over 13 marathon hours and 11 amendments senate majority leader mitch mcconnell's rules passed without amendments. he did make a few changes, however, that basically allow for more breaks during opening arguments for these senators. initially senate majority leader

mitch mcconnell had proposed to give each side 24 hours over just two days for those opening arguments. he's now expanded that to three days. so we may not see as late of a night as last night. members just left here two hours ago. but the stage is set. opening arguments begin in just a few hours. >> there's a reason why we're here. >> reporter: house managers and president trump's legal team squared off in the first full day of the senate impeachment trial. >> they don't want the american people to see what's going on here. >> reporter: when it blew past tense. >> they lie and lie and lie. >> the only one who should be embarrassed, mr. nadler, is you. >> reporter: chief justice john roberts stepped in to admonish both sides. >> remember they are addressing the world's greatest deliberative body. >> reporter: the republicans struck down a dozen attempts by democrats to subpoena new witnesses and new documents.

many that were blocked by the white house during the house investigation. wve seethe managers and senate democrats making redundant motions over and over again the same motions. motions that are being rejected. >> i don't know how they can deny all witnesses. >> reporter: the day started solemnly all 100 senators quiet and attentive. they aren't allowed to have cell phones or drink coffee. by night fall many were seen passing notes and eating candy. >> it's not our job to make it easy for you. our job is to make it hard to deprive the american people a fair trial. >> reporter: democrats will have another chance to try to call witnesses later in the trial after opening arguments and questions from senators. as for last night democratic senators appeared to have left capitol hill exhausted and seemingly frustrated. however when senate majority leader mitch mcconnell left he told reporters he felt good

about the day and looking forward to opening arguments. >> some long days still to come. cbs news will bring you a special report as opening arguments get under way in the senate impeachment trial of president trump. the senate is expected to reconvene around 1:00 p.m. eastern today. the first case of the potentially deadly virus from china has been reported in the u.s. the centers for disease control say a seattle man is being treated for coronavirus after traveling from wuhan, china the epicenter of the outbreak. china is now reporting the number of cases in the country has soared to 440, nine people there have died. cases of the virus have also been reported in thailand, japan, south korea and taiwan. mark strassman has more. >> reporter: a man in his 30s reported feeling ill on sunday is now under quarantine here at

the providence regional center just north of seattle. he traveled recently to wuhan, china where the virus apparently originated in this food market last month. it's a new strain now spreading in asia and has never been seen before in humans. >> the current information suggests that there is human transmission of this virus. what we don't know is how sustained the transmission is. >> reporter: signs of the virus include fever, cough and trouble breathing. in severe cases patients suffer pneumonia, kidney failure and death. there are no vaccinations. china was criticized for underreporting the sars could -- -- sars pan demonstrate economic that killed nearly 800 people in 2002-2003. but cdc says china's prompt reporting of this new virus helped he detect this first case here in the the u.s. >> the global community and united states has been preparing for exactly this situation.

>> reporter: the international terminal at atlanta's airport became one of five in the u.s. to screen arrivals from asia for the virus. the challenge, this virus incubates slowly. someone could have it and not know it for days after getting home. mark strassman, cbs news, atlanta. some major car recalls to tell you about. toyota and honda are recalling millions of vehicles due to airbag problems. toyota recall affects more than 3 million vehicles worldwide because air bags may not inflate in a crash. this recall covers certain corolla, and avalon hybrids. you can take your vehicle to a dealership for repairs. honda will recall 2 million vehicles. it covers certain honda and acura vehicles from 1996 to 2003. replacement parts will not be available for another year. opening statements are set to begin today in harvey weinstein's sexual assault trial.

lawyers for the former movie mogul plan to use email exchanges between weinstein and his accusers. the text shows any contact harvey weinstein had with the women was consensual. now this comes after his team lost a bid to move the case out of manhattan. harvey weinstein is charged with raping a woman in 2013 and forcibly performing a sex act on another in 2006. new video apparently reveals members of a white supremacist group wanted a civil war to break out at a recent gun rights rally in virginia. federal prosecutors didisclosed the footage in a court filing yesterday. patrick jordan matthews was arrested days before monday's rally. hidden camera captured him last month with two other members talking about the rally as what they call a boundless opportunity. matthews also video-taped himself advocating for killing people, poisoning water supplies, and derailing trains.

former secretary of state hillary clinton now says in a tweet she will support any democratic presidential nominee. that comes after she received backlash for strongly criticizing senator bernie sanders. ed o'keefe reports. >> reporter: four years after bernie sanders nearly derailed her presidential campaign hillary clinton is still holding a grudge. >> there's a set of expectations. >> reporter: in a new documentary about her life clinton says in congress nobody likes sanders. she dismisses him as a career politician and adds it's all just baloney and i feel so bad people got sucked into it. asked by the hollywood reporter if she would support sanders if he wins the nomination clinton said i'm not going there and he created a culture where his supporters attack people especially women. sanders back in washington for the impeachment trial tried to downplay the criticism. >> on a good day my wife likes me.

oh, boy that's video of a commuter train crashing into a tractor-trailer that got stuck on railroad tracks about 40 miles outside new york city. witnesses watched in horror as the metro-north train ripped through the truck last night. it was carrying hundreds of hp laser printers. the driver stayed at the scene and thankfully no one was hurt. l.a. city council is calling for justice in baseball's cheating scandal and jeff bezos' phone was hacked. those are some of the headlines in the morning newsstand today. britain's "guardian" reports jeff bezos' phone was hacked by saudi crown prince mohammad bin salman. digital forensic analysis shows

bezos' phone was hacked in 2017 after receiving a what's app message sent from mohammad bin salman's account. a huge amount of data was extracted from the phone. nine months later the "national enquirer" published intimate details about bezos' private life including text messages. saudi arabia calls the report absurd. the united nations is expected to release a statement about the hacking later this morning. the "los angeles times" reports the l.a. city council voted unanimously to vote the 2017 and 2018 world series to the hometown dodgers. good luck with that. this is a symbolic resolution that comes after mlb said the houston astros cheated by using video cameras to steal opposing teams signs in 2017. that was the year the dodgers lost to the astros in the world series. the boston red sox meanwhile are also being investigated for a similar misconduct. the dodgers lost to the sox in the next year's world series.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. on the "cbs money watch" another delay in the return of the 737 max. and a hamburger chain files for bankruptcy. we go the new york stock exchange for that and more. >> reporter: today investors will look at data for existing home sales in december. stocks closed lower on tuesday amid growing fears about the spread of china's coronavirus. the dow dropped 152 points. nasdaq was down 18. s&p 500 lost 8 points. boeing doesn't expect federal regulators to approve updates to its grounded 737 max until this summer. people familiar with the matter say more work needs to be done to receive approval. this means airlines that own max jets will have to start another

peak summer season without them. the faa grounded boeing's max fleet last year after deadly crashes in ethiopia and indonesia.th software, computers and pilot training for the planes. a major development in a sexual assault lawsuit involving lyft. a judge has ruled dozens of cases can potentially be combined into one case. the lawsuits allege the ride share company has not done enough to protect passengers from sexual assault. lyft says it rolled out new safety features over the last year including background checks and a 911 button in the app. and krystal filed for bankruptcy. they are known for tiny hamburgers and late night service. the company owes between 50 and 100 million dollars to food suppliers and equipment company. they have more than 300 restaurants and consider itself the south's oldest fast food chain. greeting c chain papyrus is closing its
