newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. i'm anne-marie green. . democratic house managers open the trial again today. yesterday adam schiff accused the president of using his power to cheat in the 2020 election. democrats argue the house has overwhelming evidence the president abused his office and obstructed congress. they again urge the senators to allow additional witnesses and documents in the trial. republicans repeatedly rejected the proposals during a marathon sess supporters but that doesn't mean yesterday's opening arguments kept everyone's attention.

>> the facts before us are not in dispute. >> reporter: house managers began the first day of opening argument laying out why president trump should be removed from office. >> in a perfect call the president would not solicit foreign interference in the 2020 election. >> quid pro quo scheme was taking shape. >> reporter: republicans said they heard nothing new. at one point house manner jason crow acknowledged some waning interest. >> mr. chief justice i see members moving and take a break. could we take a break at this time? >> it's disconcerting to have folks absent for a long period of time. >> reporter: the house impeachment was in the news for month. leagring is the first time this information. >> the truth will come out. >> reporter: democrats continue to make their case that witnesses like john bolton

should testify. >> you should know who else was involved. >> reporter: they rejected the idea that joe biden's son hunter should testify too. one person who may show up to watch the trial -- >> i'll sit in the front row and stare in their corrupt faces. >> reporter: standing ovation for a group of students who work in the senate. today is their last day. senate adjourned just before 9:30 last night which leaves 16 more hours for house managers to finish their opening arguments. they were given that 24 hour window to spend over three days. representative adam schiff said now that he's laid out the case and the fact of the case he has he will spend today focusing on the law and laying out the constitution. thank you so much. cbs news will bring you a special report when opening arguments resume in the impeachment trial today. senators are expected to

reconvene around 1:00 p.m. eastern. three americans were killed after their plane crashed in australia while battling fires. authorities say the aircraft went down in new south wales about 70 miles of the country's capital. this is the type of plane that crashed. it's a c-130 her can yk hercule. the cause of the crash is under investigation. the plane was loaded with retardant for fire bombing missions. there were reports of a large fireball after the plane hit the ground. bushfires have burned more than 25 million acres since september there. an investigation is under way in a deadly shooting in seattle. it happened yesterday in the downtown area. at least one person was killed. seven others were wounded. witnesses say several people opened fire. the person killed was a woman. the other victims ranged in age from 9 to 55 years old. an argument started outside a

the crash. a key witness is expected to testify today disgraced hollywood mogul harvey weinstein. "sopranos's" actress isabella is expected to take the stand. she allegation weinstein raped her in the '90 and never reported it. harvey weinstein denies all allegations of nonconsensual sex. yesterday one of the first witnesses in the stand took the stand. >> reporter: harvey weinstein recovering from a recent back surgery stumbled as he entered the cocourthouse. at the heart of this case two allegations that weinstein raped an aspiring acstress in a manhattan hotel room in 2013 and an allegation he assaulted a different woman in his manhattan apartment in 2006. prosecutor didn't mince words

captured six gray whales. gray whales have the longest migration of any mammal. they travel 12,000 miles round trip from their feeding grounds in the arctic. there's a crackdown on emotional support animals on planes and a scandal threatens to overshadow the grammys. those are the headlines on the newsstand. "the washington post" reports the controversy surrounding the recording academy less than a week before the grammy awards. yesterday the ceo of the grammys said that a rape allegation levelled against him by his ousted success sore deborah dugan is false and outrage justice. dugan claimed he had been accused of rape by a foreign artist. the academy placed dugan on leave after she was accused of misconduct. dugan says she was put on leave

"miami herald" reports an arrest warrant has been issued for antonio brown. he and his trainer are accused of attacking a man on tuesday. brown faces several charges including burglary with battery and criminal mischief. police tried to make contact with brown but were uncornerbackful. his trainer was arrested. brown was released by the new england patriots in september after accusations of sexual misconduct. the department of transportation want to ban all service animals for flights to the u.s. except for specially trained dogs. the proposal would allow

airlines to prohibit emotional support animals such as untrained dogs, birds, cats and miniature horses. in an interview last month a spokesperson for the association of flight attendants said there have been many instances of aggressive animal behavior. >> we had flight attendants go to the hospital with stitches. passengers having to be taken off on a gurney because of attacks from untrained emotional support animals. >> airlines say passengers will call their pets emotional support animals to avoid pet fees. the public has 60 days to comment on the proposal. the hill reports the state department plans to impose restrictions on pregnant women to prevent birth tourism. the state department will unveil the new rules today. women who are pregnant and otherwise eligible for u.s.
