good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin this morning with the death of kobe bryant. the nba superstar and his 13-year-old were killed in a helicopter crash in california along with seven others. bryant's helicopter went down yesterday about 30 miles outside of los angeles. ntsb and faa are investigating. bryant often used a helicopter to commute from orange county where he has a home to the staple center in los angeles. bryant joined the nba in 1996 and retired 20 years later. he spent his entire career with the l.a. lakers. overnight thousands of fans gathered outside of the staple center to pay tribute to kobe bryant and his family. nichelle medina is at the crash site. what's the latest in this investigation? >> reporter: investigators with the ntsb are expected to arrive here at the scene sometime later this morning.

in the meantime fans here and around the world are mourning the loss of a legend. nba teams from coast to coast paid tribute to kobe bryant last night. >> everything i learned came from kobe. >> reporter: the 18 time all-star won five championships with the los angeles lakers. and inspired a generation of basketball players along the way. >> yeah. that dna that very few athletes could ever have. the tiger woods and the michael jordans. >> reporter: bryant was killed along with his daughter gianna and seven others in a helicopter crash yesterday morning. the chopper went down in foggy conditions about 30 miles northwest of los angeles. >> given the terrain and condition of the site, we expect that this will probably take at least a couple if not a few days to complete the recovery.

>> reporter: dispatch audio captured the moments before the crash. >> i heard a helicopter flying like, i felt like it was flying way too low and then i heard like a thud noise and then there was nothing. >> reporter: bryant scored 60 points in the final game of his career in 2016. >> you guys will always be in my heart. >> reporter: and thanked his fans and family after the game. >> for all the hours i spent in the gym working and training and vanessa you holding down the family the way you have. there's no way i can thank you enenough for that. >> reporter: outside of the staple center fans gathered late into the night to pay their respects. you can see the small memorial of candles and flowers to kobe who gave so much to the city of los angeles but really the sport of basketball. as for that investigation i can tell you when investigators arrive on the scene today we're least five days likely even longer for them to process the

crash site, the site with the debris field of a football field. >> wow. thank you very much. so ahead on "cbs this morning" dana jacobson is going to look back at the life and legacy of basketball superstar kobe bryant. his death cast a shadow over last night's grammy awards in los angeles. artists arriving on the red carpet offered tributes and reflected on bryant's influence. >> just really send prayers and condolences out to his family. he was an amazing human. not only inspired basketball but like the world. >> there were also tributes to bryant during the awards show. danya bacchus was there. >> reporter: alicia keys opened the show on a somber note hours after kobe bryant died in a helicopter crash. >> literally standing here heartbroken in the house that kobe bryant built.

the year. >> i feel the fans deserve everything. i feel they have not been talked about enough because that's the only reason any of us are here tonight. ♪ >> reporter: demi lovato took the stage for her first live performance since taking a break in 2018. ♪ >> reporter: lil nas x won two grammys and don't count out the more seasoned artist, aerosmith for a rocking rendition of "walk this way." to washington. in a bomb shell allegation involving president trump and the military aid to ukraine that's at the center of his impeachment trial. the "new york times" reports president trump told john bolton that he wanted to maintain a hold on military funding until ukraine launched political investigations into his democratic rivals. now that's according to an unpublished manuscript by bolton. the book is reportedly an

outline of what bolton might testify to if he's called as a witness in the impeachment proceedings. today mr. trump's defense team will deliver a second day of opening arguments in the senate impeachment trial. laura podesta is in new york. what does this potentially mean for the president's defense team? >> reporter: the defense team is going to have to address these new revelations and what bolton is allegedly writing but likely not to change the lawyers main messaging which is the claim, baseless claim that ukraine interfered in the 2016 election and president trump had every right to withhold military aid to that country. >> the only thing we're seeking is the truth. >> reporter: senate minority leader chuck schumer said sunday finding out the truth in president trump's senate impeachment trial requires witnesses and documents. >> there's no good answer why there shouldn't be witnesses and documents. and no one has given one. >> reporter: president trump is accused of

obstruction of congress over efforts to pressure ukraine to investigate his political rivals. republican senator make braun told "meet the press" sunday he didn't see anything new from the demonstrate's case. >> i paid attention to each version of the house inquiry. behind closed doors, public version from four constitutional experts and really looking for what i found that was new and it was repackaging. >> reporter: on saturday, president's defense kicked off. new snow, video was released over the weekend capturing president trump at a private dinner party in april 2018. mr. trump is heard ordering marie yovanovitch, the former ambassador to ukraine to be fired. >> she's basically walking around telling everybody wait he's going to get impeached. just wait. >> get rid of her. get her out. get her out. take her out.

>> reporter: that cell phone video and audio was sent to the house and the eagles committee by the attorney for lev parnas, one of two indicted associates of rudy giuliani. parent julian assange' attorney joseph bondy hopes it convince senators to vote in favor of having witnesses and evidence in their trial. but the senate could take final votes on the impeachment charges as early as this week if motions to call witnesses fail. >> laura podesta here in new york. thank you. u.s. joint operations command said rockets came down near the u.s. embassy in baghdad. no injuries. it happened on a day of unrest in iraq. those women are chanting against the iraqi government. at similar demonstrations in baghdad five protesters were killed.

this comes amid fears tensions between the u.s. and iran could lead to more conflict in the country. in what appears to be an unrelated incident, a caspian airlines plane skidded off a runway in iran this morning. this footage was shot by passengers shortly after the aircraft carrying 150 people came to a top on a street near an airport in southern iran. there were no major injuries. officials say the plane lost its landing gear after a hard landing. china is stepping up efforts to contain the coronavirus. the virus has killed at least 80 people in the country and infected more than 2700 others. china extended the lunar new year holiday to keep the public at home and avoid spreading the illness. the u.s. consulate in wuhan where the virus was first detected said it's arranging to evacuate its staff and other americans tomorrow.

oh, what a relief it is! so fast! more than 200 survivors of the auschwitz concentration camp walked back through the gates there sunday, 75 years after the camp was liberated. 6 million jews were killed during the holocaust. 1 million died there. one man told the guardian newspaper he was there to remember and also to make sure the world doesn't forget. ukraine's president also marked the liberation of usual wits and israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu has a white house meeting this week.

those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the associated press is reporting on a holocaust memorial event attended by ukrainian president volodymyr zelensky at a dinner in krakow he praised holocaust survivors. he called for the against atread. zelensky is of jewish descent. members of his family died in the holocaust. >> the hill reports suspicions cloud today's white house meetings where president trump is set to unveil the administration's middle east peace plan. he'll hold meeting with benjamin netanyahu and benny gantz. it comes as president trump's impeachment trial continues in the senate and israeli parliament meets to discuss benjamin netanyahu's request for immunity from corruption charges. palestinian officials rejected the peace plan saying they have not been consulted. people says queen elizabeth gave a new title to prince william.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. the country. on the "cbs money watch" boeing's newest plane goes on a test run, and ford proposes a $30 million settlement. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. >> reporter: investors are hoping for a rebound after the stocks faced the first downward of the year. amid growing fears over china's coronavirus. on the friday the dow sank 170 points. nasdaq went down 87. s&p 500 dropped 30. so far futures indicating a lower open. ford will pay at least $30 million in a proposed settlement over a class action lawsuit. according to the "detroit free press" the lawsuit is related to failing transmissions in its fiesta and ford focus vehicles. it represents 2 million owners

and former owners which had bad clutch transmissions. ford says itbelieves the settlement is fair and expected to be approved sometime next month. walmart is testing higher wages for new hourly positions at 500 of its stores. the nation's largest private employer will raise starting hourly wages to $12 an hour up from $11 for these new roles. walmart says the decision is part of an overall strategy to empower its staff. under the plan workers will be trained to develop broader retail skills. boeing has successfully completed the first test flight of the world's largest twin engine plane. the 777x took off near seattle on saturday and lasted four hours. the plane has a larger and more efficient version of boeing 777 mini jumpo aircraft. the 25 the-foot passenger plane includes folding wing tip to fit parking base and world's largest
