57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. investigators are looking into whether or not weather played a role in the helicopter crash th young daughter, and seven others. this as bryant's close friend lebron james is speaking out for the first time since his death. in an emotional instagram post he wrote, "i'm not ready, but here i go. i begin crying again just thinking about you. i'm heartbroken and devastated." last night fans gathered outside of bryant's gated community in newport beach with balloons, candles, and flowers. the lakers game against the clippers tonight will be postponed as fans take time to mourn bryant. "time" magazine is also said to memorialize the lakers star with a commemorative cover set to hit stands friday. marin austin has more from the staples center. what's the mood like now? >> reporter: just to put it in

speck for you, it is the middle of the night here in los angeles, and fans and mourners are still outside the staples center paying respects to kobe bryant and his daughter. meanwhile, the investigation continues into how exactly that helicopter went down. federal investigators are painstakingly examining the massive debris field outside los angeles where the helicopter carrying kobe bryant, his daughter gianna, and several others went down sunday. >> a piece of the tail is down the hill on the left side of the hill. thse is over on other side of that hill. >> reporter: the helicopter took off at 9:06 a.m. headed for a basketball tournament in nearby thousand oaks when it ran into thick fog. >> two echo x-ray, you're still too low level for a flight following at this time. >> reporter: the pilot did not signal distress but told traffic controllers he was climbing to avoid a cloud layer before slamming into a hillside.

>> we'll be looking at other avionics on the aircraft to see what information we can gather, and then we're going to be looking for other electronics. >> reporter: as the investigation continues, thousands of mourners and fans gathered here at the staples center, the house that kobe built. >> he was an inspiration to so many including me. i grew up watching him. >> reporter: several landmarks including the empire state building lit up in purple and gold monday night. the colors bryant wore in his 20-year career with the los angeles lakers. nba star lebron james, who recently surpassed bryant's all-time scoring record, issued ththis heartfelt post on instagram promising to continue his legacy. officials say that there was no black box on board that helicopter. they are hoping to investigate the pilot's ipad. anne-marie? >> marin austin, thank you so much. today president trump's

legal team is expected to wrap up a third day of opening arguments in the impeachment trial. yesterday mr. trump's lawyers attacked the house impeachment managers' case and bashed the bidens. it wasn't until later in the day that allegations by former national security adviser john bolton in a forthcoming book were even mentioned. katherine johnson is in washington. how did the president's defenders take on bolton's allegations? >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. they mostly bypassed this report saying they only deal with facts, not allegations or speculation. but despite president trump's defense team largely ignoring this leak, it is grabbing the attention of senators on both sides of the aisle. attorneys for president trump took turns hammering at the impeachment case brought by house democrats. >> purely noncriminal conduct including abuse of power and obstruction of congress are outside the range of impeachable offenses. >> reporter: the president's team mostly ignoring the just-revealed allegations by former national security adviser

john bolton. >> we do not deal with speculation, allegations that are not based on evidentiary standards at all. >> reporter: according to "the new york times," bolton writes in his forthcoming book that mr. trump once told him he wanted to continue to freeze aid to ukraine until officials there helped with investigations into democrats, including the bidens. >> i haven't seen the manuscript, but i can tell you nothing was ever said to john bolton. but i have not seen a manuscript. i guess he's writing a book. i have not seen it. >> reporter: the allegations are adding to the pressure on senate republicans to allow witnesses to appear at the impeachment trial. >> pretty fair to say that john bolton has a relevant testimony to provide to those of us who are sitting in impartial justice. >> the senators cannot hide from a relevant witness who has come forward, willing to testify, and indeed one that has such central information in this case. >> reporter: at least four republicans would have to vote to admit new evidence or

witnesses. now, how that vote may play out is still very much up in the air as many republican senators are saying the timing of this leak is extremely suspect and not to be trusted. today the defense could wrap their opening arguments. they will wrap their opening arguments, we could even get into the next phase of this trial which is the 16 hours of q&a by the senators. only after those 16 hours will we then see a vote for the possible calling of new witnesses. anne-marie? >> all right, katherine johnson in washington. thanks a lot. the u.s. government is warning americans to avoid traveling to china as the coronavirus spreads. at least five cases have been confirmed in the u.s. more than 100 have been tested in 26 states. this morning, u.s. health officials will hold a news conference to discuss just what's being done about the virus. at least 106 people have died from the coronavirus in china. the number of confirmed cases is now more than 4,500.

adriana diaz reports on the effort to evacuate americans from the hot zone. >> reporter: the state department is airlifting some americans out of wuhan wednesday, but not all, saying capacity is extremely limited. priority will be given to individuals at greater risk from coronavirus. a thousand americans are reportedly in the city, including sam roth's family. >> they do miss you a lot. >> reporter: they're in wuhan visiting relatives. roth wants them on the u.s. flight. >> i'm trying to make the case that we've got a 10-month-old, we've got a 5-year-old. they're susceptible. >> reporter: the coronavirus is in at leasast 18 countries and territories and has now infected five people in the u.s. thousands have been infected in china where health officials warn the virus can spread before symptoms appear. but the cdc cannot confirm that. at this construction site, the goal is to build two hospitals in ten days, an attempt to keep up with the virus. adriana diaz, cbs news.

back home, health oficials say so far this season there have been at least 15 million influenza cases here in the u.s. the latest cdc report says 8,200 have died from the flu this season. there are 15 additional pediatric deaths being reported this week bringing the total to 54. 140,000 people have been hospitalized. prince andrew is accused of providing zero cooperation in jeffrey epstein's sex trafficking investigation. authorities in new york said they had contacted andrew for an interview, but he has not yet agreed to provide one. in november, the 59-year-old said that he was willing to help law enforcement with their investigation. prince andrew faces allegations stemming from his relationship with epstein who died in august as he was awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. and one of the women harvey weinstein is charged with assaulting has testified at his trial.

specialist moore was just 22 years old. north carolina governor roy cooper has ordered flags to be flown at half staff in his honor. the latest on a deadly dock fire investigation and the case of two missing idaho kids goes to hawaii. those are some of the headlines on the newsstands. kgmb reports the mother of two missing idaho children has been found living in hawaii with her new husband. an idaho reporter was at a kauai resort when police caught up with lori vallow and chad daybell on sunday. investigators searched the resort and the couple's rental car was seized. in september, 17-year-old tylee ryan and 17-year-old joshua "jj" vallow disappeared. the couple did not report them missing and have been reportedly unwilling to cooperate with authorities. >> they've been on kauai for some time that we're aware of.

and the mother has spent time here over the years, both here and i think other islands. >> police are also investigating the deaths of the couple's former spouses. neither vallow or daybell have been charged with a crime. "the birmingham news" reports a search for more victims after a dock fire killed at least eight in alabama. the fire which broke out yesterday morning consumed the dock while people were sleeping. many were living on houseboats. the fire destroyed nearly three dozen boats. people dove into the water to escape the flames. seven were rescued. >> screaming, just people screaming, "help," and there was nothing anybody could do. >> an investigation is under way to determine the cause of the fire. and space.com says spacex plans to launch 60 more starlink satellites to join its growing global internet service.

the dow dropped 453 points. the nasdaq skidded 175, and the s&p 500 sank 51. some social media companies are scrambling to curb misinformation over the coronavirus. according to the "washington post," facebook is working with seven organizations to help fact check posts on its site. the platform has lowered the posts citing inaccuracies. yesterday, twitter started directing u.s. users searching for kroinsz-related hash tags to the cdc. youtube says it prior toyses more credible -- prioritizes more credible sources. planter's is suspending the promotion of its super bowl ad campaign in the wake of kobe bryant's death. the snack food company released a teaser last week showing its mascot, mr. peanut, falling to his death. planter's says it will adjust the campaign on advertising platforms like twitter and youtube following the tragic death of the basketball legend.

a spokesperson says the ad featuring the 104-year-old mascot's funeral will air in its entirety during the super bowl. a disgraced pharmaceutical executive is facing a new lawsuit over a scheme to inflate the cost of a lifesaving drug. the ftc and new york's attorney general are suing incarcerated pharma bro martin shkreli. they allege he illegally monopolized the drug. the action comes nearly five years after shkreli made headlines for increasing the drug's price by more than 4,000%. he's currently serving a seven-year prison sentence. and mattel's introduced a new line of diverse barbie and ken dolls. they are the latest members of the 2020 barbie fashionistas line. there are more gender-inclusive dolls and there are some with prosthetic limbs, alopecia. or the skin condition activivit and there are new hair styles
