good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. i'm anne-marie green. there are breaking developments in the coronavirus. a plane carrying more than 200 americans evacuated from the chinese city at the center of the outbreak landed last night. the flight from wuhan, china scoped in anchorage alaska for refueling before heading to southern california. passengers were set to go through customs and cdc screening. the plane was initially scheduled to land in ontario, california but diverted last minute to mark reserve base in riverside county outside of los angeles. federal health officials here in the u.s. are expanding screening for the virus to 18 major airports and two land border crossings. the white house said it's now considering a ban on flights between the u.s. and china. so far more than 130 people in china have died from the illness. the number of confirmed cases in

the country has ballooned to 6,000. there are also 60 cases in 13 countries outside of china including five here in the u.s. dr. jon lapook has more on americans allowed to leave china. >> reporter: with wuhan on lock down hundreds of trapped americans are getting out. the first sanctioned plane left just this afternoon. a dual british-american citizen recorded his journey. >> if your name was on the list you got into the airport. >> reporter: a federal spokesperson familiar with the plan said passengers will be quarantined and observed for three days once in the u.s. with more than 100 cases tested in the u.s. public health officials are on alert. >> we have to prepare for the worse always. if you don't and the worse happens you're behind the eight ball. >> reporter: the head of the infectious disease at the nih --

>> if you start seeing contact and contacts getting infected then that becomes more of a concern. >> reporter: the state department is warning americans about traveling to china. >> when you see that reaction with quarantining millions of citizens. >> that's unprecedented. i can tell you, it's never been done before. not even close to this magnitude. >> reporter: if the outbreak continues to grow the nih has an ace in the hole. existing technology that allows researchers to jump start vaccine development by modifying a previously developed vaccine. >> the beauty of this is you can do it really, really quickly. >> reporter: he told me if the outbreak continues to spread a widely available vaccine would be a year away. for new officials emphasize the risk to the general public is low. but they are still learning about the virus.

including how quickly it spread from person to person. president trump attacked democrats and his impeachment trial at a rally in new jersey last night. >> the congressional democrats are obsessed with demented hoaxes, crazy witch hunts and deranged partisan crusades. it's all they know how to do. >> this comes as his impeachment trial shifts into its next phase today. senators will now get to question house prosecutors and white house attorneys. meanwhile majority leader mitch mcconnell says he does not have enough votes to block witnesses. catherine johnson is on capitol hill. what can we expect today? >> reporter: today is the day senators who have been forced to sit silently for an entire week get to ask some questions. they still don't get to speak up. these questions must be submitted in writing signed by the senators and only be read by chief justice john roberts out loud. he'll alternate between both sides.

one topic weighing heavily, these new allegations surfacing in an unpublished book. president trump's legal team made quick use of their opening arguments using half of their 24 hours. >> these articles must be rejected. the constitution requires it. justice demands it. >> reporter: democrats continue to push for more witness testimony particularly from john bolton, the former national security adviser's upcoming book contradicts key parts of the white house defense. >> most of the senate will look pretty stupid if in 60 days when john bolton's book hits the american public there's relevant information about whether this president should be removed or not and we didn't take the chance to get that kind of testimony.

>> reporter: after the defense ended its presentation, majority leader mitch mcconnell told his caucus they don't have the vote to block witnesses. a handful of witnesses remain undecided. >> now talking about giving the prosecutors more witnesses as if the united states senate is a fishing hole for adam schiff to go fish for the big fish. >> reporter: at a campaign rally in new jersey president trump once again dismissed the impeachment. >> they can't win an election so they are trying to steal an election. it's not happening, folks. it's not happening. >> reporter: the president predicted that he'll be re-elected and said the gop would retake the house of representatives as well. now despite president trump calling impeachment a hoax all along these new allegations do have his attention as he joins his defense in questioning the timing of this leaked information. just at midnight the president tweeted out quote why didn't john bolton complain about this nonsense a long time ago when he was publicly terminated. >> catherine johnson on capitol hill, thank you so much. ahead, only on cbs "this

morning" an interview with president trump's personal attorney rudy giuliani. his thoughts on the former national security adviser john bolton who may soon testify in the impeachment trial. president trump and israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu unveiled a middle east peace plan. e al would allow for a palestinian state only if they meet certain tests over time. israel could also continue annexing its settlement in the west bank but new settlements would be suspended. jerusalem would be recognized as israel's capital. thousands took to the streets in gaza rejecting the idea. they burned pictures of both leaders. a powerful earthquake rocked the caribbean shaking a large area from mexico to florida. the 7.7 magnitude quake hit between jamaica and cuba yesterday afternoon. the epicenter was a relatively shallow six miles beneath the center.

it was felt 450 miles away in miami. buildings shook sending hundreds of people into the streets. the cayman islands were rocked by several strong after shocks. giant sink holes opened up there. no reports of injuries or heavy damage. there are new details about the chopper crash that killed kobe bryant. investigators say that the helicopter did not have a recommended warning system to alert the pilot that he was too close to land but say it's not clear if it would have prevented sunday's crash outside of los angeles. new cell phone video appears to show the chopper circling minutes before the crash. yesterday the ntsb used a helicopter to airlift pieces of wreckage out of the hillside crash site. the coroner says the remains of all nine victims have been recovered. last night at the staple center some of bryant's former layingers teammat erer erers --

of silence for john altobelli. >> reporter: the orange coast baseball the team took to the field for their season opener without their coach john altobelli. he died in sunday's crash along with his wife and daughter. the ntsb has wrapped it's on sight investigation. a helicopter removed the mangled fuselage and other forensic evidence the crash site. board member recounted the last moments of the flight. >> the descent rate for the helicopter was over 2,000 feet a minute. so we know that this was a high energy impact crash. >> reporter: a final report on the accidentwill take at least a year. coming up on the morning news now an accused wife killer

the hartford current reports a connecticut man charged with murdering his estranged wife is in critical condition after attempting suicide. police say they went to the home of fotis dulos yesterday after he was late for a bond hearing that could have sent him back to jail. they found him unresponsive in a running vehicle in his garage. drone video shows police ming cn los. he's being treated for carbon monoxide poisoning. he pleaded not guilty earlier this month to murdering and kidnapping jennifer dulos. she was last seen in may. after she dropped her five children at school. the associated press reports that there's new pressure on prince andrew to help with the fbi's investigation into his ties with jeffrey epstein. on monday a federal prosecutor said andrew had provided zero cooperation. yesterday attorney lisa bloom who is representing five of epstein's alleged sex trafficking victims said it's time for andrew to come forward. one woman said epstein pressured to have sex with andrew when she was 17.

gloria allred who is representing one oe epsteins' accusers says that she personally reached out to prince andrew in a letter asking him to provide information. >> those people if they know a crime has been committed, or most likely was committed, and they have relevant information, as i've said whether they are a prince or a pauper they should provide it. >> prince andrew has denied the alleges against him. and the military times reports a former navy s.e.a.l. acquitted of murdering an isis prisoner called out his accusers and attacked them on social media. it was posted by eddie gallagher. he identifies his platoon mates who accused him of war crimes and called them a coward. >> even though i went to trial, exposed all the lies that was said to me by certain cowards in
