good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. i'm anne-marie green. senators submit questions for a second and final day in president trump's impeachment trial today. the first day of questioning lasted late into the night. mr. trump's defense team dismissed damaging allegations from f former national security adviser john bolton. republican leaders are working to gather support to block a vote calling for new witnesses. that could bring a swift end to the trial and a possible acquittal as early as tomorrow. >> reporter: today is day two of questions and answers but that's what's going on inside the senate chamber. what's going on outside a lot of lobbying to get enough senators to vote for witnesses or to block them. president trump's legal team and day's marathon session whether or not the president's actions are impeachable. >> if a president does something which he believes will help him get elected in the public

interest, that cannot be the kind of quid pro quo that results in impeachment. >> policy of the president to demand foreign interference and withhold money from an ally at war unless they get it. that's what they call policy. i'm sorry. that's what i call corruption. >> reporter: democrats continue to push the senate to call new witnesses. >> the senate can get to truth. >> reporter: including john bolton. >> it makes it all the more essential to call the man who spoke directly with the president. >> reporter: unclear if they have enough gop support to make it happen. >> i'm in favor of calling witnesses. i'm sure there will be others. >> reporter: president trump spent part of yesterday attacking bolton on twitter but at a bill signing at the white house he struck a different tone for republican senators on the fence about witnesses. >> maybe i'm being just nice the

-- to them because i want their vote. >> reporter: the president's team says it has their own wish list if witnesses are being called. >> i want adam schiff, hunter biden, joe biden, i want the whistle-blower. by the way, if we get anybody we want we'll be here for a very long time. >> reporter: the senate could vote on witnesses tomorrow. democrats do need four senators, four republican senators in order to compel the senate to call those witnesses. mitt romney says he's in favor. that means all eyes are now in senator susan collins, lisa murkowski and lamar alexander. the world health organization today is reconvening its emergency committee to discuss the severity of the coronavirus. experts get their first look at what the potential deadly disease looks like under a microscope. 200 americans evacuated from the epicenter of the illness in china. they've undergone screening for the virus. they are awaiting results at a california military base. the latest death toll in china

has jumped to nearly 170. more than 7,000 people have been infected. it's now bigger than the deadly sars outbreak in 2003. cbs news learned airlines from around the world are suspending or drastically cutting flights to china and that includes major u.s. carriers. like american, delta and united. carter evans reports. >> reporter: pictures taken during the 14 hour flight show medical personnel and crew in protective gear and passengers wearing masks. the 195 on board were screened multiple times. ian thompson is one of the evacuees. >> come around every two or three hours. >> reporter: they were met by medical teams on the tarmac and escorted to barracks for voluntary inspection. this doctor is part of the cdc ground team. >> we talked to passengers who said they gave nasal swabs, blood tests. how long will it take to get those tests back? >> we think we can do that in 72

hours. >> reporter: if some choose to leave before that the cdc says it can stop them. >> if we think that a person is a danger to the community, we can institute an individual quarantine for that person and wewe will. >> reporter: there are still reportedly hundreds of americans in the locked down city of wuhan. this woman arrived ten days ago. her flight cancelled twice. >> i don't know how i'll get back. worse case i just wait for the travel ban to end. >> reporter: health officials in the u.s. say confirmed cases stand at five. but they are still looking at 92 others. the world health organization said 2% of the people who contracted the virus in china have died. the organization issued a warning for the rest of the world. >> the whole world needs to be on alert now. >> reporter: if any of the passengers that were on the flight show serious symptoms they will be brought here to riverside university medical

center. even if their tests are clear and allowed to go home they still need to be monitored for two weeks. carter evans, cbs news. all nine victims of sunday's helicopter crash that killed kobe bryant have now been officially identified. the los angeles county coroner's office says they were identified through dna and fingerprints. the victims include bryant's 13-year-old daughter gianna. for the first time since the crash we're hearing from bryant's wife vanessa. >> reporter: vanessa bryant broke her silence on the deaths of her husband and daughter with a heartbreaking instagram post. she wrote in part there are not enough words to describe our pain right now. i take comfort that kobe and gg know they were so beautifully loved. they were our blessings taken from us too soon. the los angeles lakers came together wednesday for their first practice since bryant's death. the nba postponed last night's game against the l.a. clippers

to give the team time to grieve. >> we're all deeply saddened by this unthinkable tragedy. >> reporter: sports fans are returning to the so-called house that kobe built. >> thursday when the clippers play and when the lakers do come back to play important the trailblazers it will be very tough night for everybody involved. >> reporter: the investigation into the crash continues. ntsb says the pilot was just a few minutes from his destination and trying to climb out of the clouds when the chopper slammed into the side of a mountain. >> we know that this was a high energy impact crash. >> reporter: there was no crash rnce, or warning system on the helicopter. it was not required. investigators caution it's too early to determine whether having such a system would have prevented sunday's crash. >> there's many variables here and we don't even have a conclusion that this is related. >> reporter: wreckage from the crash has been taken to phoenix for analysis.

a final report on the accident will take at least a year. fire officials say a california apartment building that caught fire yesterday did not have internal fire sprinklers. the flames broke out at a complex in brentwood. 11 people were hurt. two critically. the fire started in a seventh floor unit. heavy flames and smoke billowed from the scene and helicopters were used to rescue several residents who fled to the roof. it took firefighters nearly two hours to extingish the flames. u.s. authorities have discovered the longest ever drug smuggling tunnel along the southwest border. it runs three fourths of a mile from tijuana mexico to the san diego area. officials say smugglers move everything through the tunnels. >> it's going to be narcotics, potential for weapons and ammunition. >> the california border patrol reports cocaine seizures are up

the family of a toddler who died after falling from an open cruise ship window says royal caribbean lied about what happened. attorneys for the parents of khloe claim royal caribbean lied when the grandfather new the window was open before the child fell from his arms in july. earlier this month the cruise line released a surveillance video. it showed the grandfather knew the window was open because he stuck his head out and held the girl in front of it. the surveillance video is deceptive. it released enacted photos. they show the windows were too far away for the grandfather to have stuck his head out of one that was open. and "usa today" says white supremacist dylann roof is appealing his federal death sentence in 2015 massacre of nine black church members in south carolina. oud 's lawyers claim he was him to represent himself during a penalty phase of the trial.

here's a look at today's forecast at some cities around the country. president trump has officially signed the new usmca trade agreement between the u.s., mexico and canada. no democrats were invited to the white house ceremony yesterday even though it was a bipartisan deal. the president said that the new deal quote ends the nafta nightmare although it leaves the vast majority of nafta largely unchanged. the usmca does toughen labor rules. there's a new recall of infant sleepers and a luxury department store is getting in on the used clothes business. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> reporter: investors will get a look at the official scorecard of the u.s. economy. fourth quarter gross domestic data will be released. stocks finished mixed yesterday.

facemasks benefit the general population. this doctor is a pediatric infectious diseases doctor at the cleveland clinic. he says it's really the sick person that should wear a facemask. >> if they are feeling like they have symptoms we do ask them to put on a mask when they are coming to waiting rooms or emergency department or when they are going into a public space. it helps prevent the spread of infection. >> reporter: face masks are not recommended even during the throes of the flu season. there are better steps to stay healthy. >> wearing a mask when you don't have symptoms is not that helpful. what is helpful, those is washing your hands. >> reporter: also try not to touch your eye, nose and mouth because viruses can spread easily from common surfaces. coming up on "cbs this morning" the race for the white house. anthony mason talks with eight suburban women in the swing state of pennsylvania who reveal what it will take to win their
