honoring kobe bryant: the emotional tribute from his former team. and a little girl's sweet idea to help a community in need. >> this is the "cbs weekend news." >> ninan: good evening. i'm reena ninan. a new case of the deadly coronavirus has been confirmed in the u.s. the latest case in massachusetts. it's the eighth in the u.s. and the first on the east coast. health officials have declared a public health emergency. nearly 14,000 people worldwide have been infected, and more than 300 have died, and nearly 60 million people in china are under travel restrictions. ramy inocencio leading us off from beijing. >> reporter: the c.d.c. says the new case of coronavirus is a boston resident in his 20s who recently traveled to the center of the outbreak, wuhan, china. he's been placed in isolation.

announced it would close all its stores and offices in china until february 9, joining a growing list of companies restricting operations here. this all comes as the world health organization declared a global health emergency, and the u.s. state department raised its travel advisory for china to the highest level, meaning do not travel to china. a new study out by the british medical journal "the lancet" estimates that more than 75,000 people have been infected by the virus as of last week. if that turns out to be true, it would confirm what many already fear, that beijing is massively underreporting these numbers. the c.d.c. reported that even if patient's initial tests for coronavirus are negative, they could still develop the illness, because the test only works when patients have symptoms. a study also showed the virus can be transmitted by patients with no symptoms. a woman who traveled from shanghai to germany infected seven other people while she remained asymptomatic.

those findings contributed to the decision to place 195 americans housed at a california airbase in the first federal quarantine in 50 years. they will spend 14 days there. >> the best way to control a virus like this is to keep people away from everyone else while you run out the clock on that incubation period. >> reporter: that approach continues on a massive scale inside china's hubei province, the epicenter of this outbreak. more than 50 million people are still on lockdown and unable to travel. ramy inocencio, cbs news, beijing. >> ninan: late breaking news tonight in florida. a gunman opened fire, killing two people inside a church. it happened in riviera beach, just outside west palm beach. a 15-year-old boy and another man died. two more people, a young girl and another juvenile, were wounded. police have released no information about a motive. no arrests have been made. president trump is in florida this weekend with the senate impeachment trial nearing an end.

on monday, senators return to capitol hill for closing arguments. a final vote on the articles of impeachment is set for wednesday. ben tracy is traveling with the president. >> reporter: president trump is spending the weekend at his mar- a-lago resort, today tweeting out a picture of himself saying he's getting a little exercise on the golf course. >> the yeas are 49. the nays are 51. the motion is not agreed to. >> reporter: on friday, republicans successfully defeated democrats' attempts to call new witnesses and subpoena documents in the senate trial. a confident senate majority leader mitch mcconnell left the capitol with the president's allies now eager to end what they've long derided as the impeachment hoax. >> it was a bunch of partisan ( bleep ) in the house. it continued in the senate. it's gonna end wednesday. the president's gonna get acquitted, aths ce. >> reporter: but in an ironic twist, it's now democrats who are calling the impeachment trial a sham. >> america will remember this day, unfortunately, where the

senate did not live up to its responsibilities, where the senate turned away from truth, and went along with a sham trial. >> the senator from new york... >> reporter: the senate minority leader maid one final and failed attempt friday night to call the president's former national security advisor. >> mr. chief justice, i send an amendment to the desk to subpoena john r. bolton. >> reporter: bolton says he's willing to testify, and according to leaks from his upcoming book, he has plenty to say. "the new york times" reports bolton claims that last may, president trump directed him to help pressure ukrainian officials to dig up dirt on his political opponents, just days after former vice president joe biden officially announced his run for president. president trump denies bolton's allegations. >> the truth is not going to come out five years from now. it's not going to come out five months from now. it's going to come out five days from now, or five weeks from now. that's going to be on them.

>> reporter: that final impeachment vote is now scheduled for 4:00 on wednesday afternoon. president trump still intends to give his state of the union address the night before, and we're told he won't be focusing on impeachment. he will be talking about the themes of his 2020 campaign. reena. >> ninan: ben tracy traveling went president. senate democrats running for president are making their final campaign push in iowa this weekend. the candidates forced to stay in washington for the impeachment trial have just one more full day before monday's caucuses. nikole killion on the campaign trail tonight in des moines. >> reporter: after spending the week in washington... >> i had planned to be here all week in iowa. but instead, duty called. >> reporter: ...the u.s. senators running for president tried their best to make up for lost time. >> from the bottom of my heart and very humbly, i am here to ask you to please come out and caucus for us. same day to make it in time for caucus night. reena. >> ninan: nikole killion. thanks, nikole. tonight, the 22 nations in the arab league are unanimously rejecting president trump's middle east peace plan. protesters in gaza today carried a mock coffin bearing pictures of president trump and israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. meanwhile, palestinian president mahmoud abbas has threatened to cut relations with both israel and the u.s. britain is no longer part of the european union. it marks the end of more than three years of fighting over brexit. and the start of an uncertain future for the country. roxana saberi tonight from london. >> reporter: this morning, for the first time in 47 years, brit.r n >> it's a great tragedy. all my life we've been in the european union. >> i feel absolutely delighted. it's what we wanted. it's what we vote for.

who died by suicide after being charged with his wife's murder left behind a final note. in it, fotis dulos continued to proclaim his innocence. here's mark liverman. >> reporter: the handwritten note starts with the words, "all, if you are reading this, i am no more. i refuse to spend an hour more in jail for something i had nothing to do with." it's dated january 28. that's the same day police found 52-year-old fotis dulos unresponsive in the garage of his farmington, connecticut, home, sitting in his car with the engine running. officers found him while performing a welfare check after dulos failed to show up for a bond hearing that could have sent him back to prison, charged for the murder of his estranged wife, jennifer. she disappeared last may after taking their five children to school. prosecutors say dulos killed jennifer. her body has never been found. >> we categorically deny that mr. dulos had any involvement in

the disappearance of his wife, jennifer, and we defy the state to prove that she is, in fact, dead. >> reporter: dulos was arrested in january after investigators found evidence that included surveillance video of what appeared to be dulos and his former girlfriend, michelle troconis, allegedly throwing away garbage bags. police say the recovered bags also tested positive for jennifer's blood. troconis, along with dulos' former attorney and friend, kent mawhinney, were also arrested in connection with the case. >> she has always been extremely cooperative, and we'll have to deal with these charges in court. >> reporter: and in his note, dulos also wrote that the other two people charged in this case had nothing to do with his wife's disappearance. now, keep in mind, both of them face charges of conspiracy to commit murder. michelle troconis is also accused of hindering the prosecution and tampering with evidence. reena.

>> ninan: thank you, mark. well, a special tribute today for the legendary kobe bryant. players from the basketball teams at bryant's pennsylvania high school honored the late alum. meanwhile, bryant's former team had their own emotional farewell. here's danya bacchus. >> reporter: as the los angeles lakers took to the court friday for the first time since kobe bryant's death, players wore his numbers... >> kobe bryant! >> reporter: ...the starting lineup introduced as "bryant." those inside the arena grieved his loss and celebrated his life. t-shirts with bryant's jersey number were on every seat. >> tonight, we celebrate the kid that came here at 18 years of age, retired at 38, and became probably the best dad we've seen over the last three years, man. >> reporter: the emotional ceremony honored all nine killed in the crash. >> alyssa altobelli. john altobelli.

>> ninan: the department of justice is cracking down on scam robo-calls. it's filing temporary restraining orders against u.s. telecom companies for allegedly facilitating those calls. social security fraud is the number one scam, cheating older americans out of millions of dollars. anna werner tonight on how one couple almost lost everything. >> it truly is embarrassing. i'm embarrassed. i'm really embarrassed. >> reporter: michelle andersen and her husband, kyle, a utah state representative say they know many people won't be able to believe they became victims of the social security scam, but they say the fact they did means others need a warning. >> maybe it happened to n help . cemberhen chelle says she got calls like this one: claiming her social security number had been compromised and had been used to set up multiple bank accounts associated with a

drug cartel. she says a man claiming to be a d.e.a. investigator, then said her family was in danger. >> he continued to talk to me about the danger that my family was in if i didn't cooperate, that these people were very dangerous, that they were watching me, that i needed to do what i was told. >> and not tell anybody, right? >> and not tell anyone. >> reporter: not only that, she says he told her she needed to transfer all of the money in the family's bank account to an offshore account that was safe before the fraudulent account of act was seized or they would lose all their money. he sent her what he said was a warrant for her arrest for drug trafficking and money laundering that would be used if she didn't show full cooperation. >> so i drove to the credit union and i transferred all of our money into our checking account. we had cds. i cashed them in. i paid the penalties. >> reporter: all told, after a week's time, she wider $150,000

to the crooks. it was only after the scammer asked her to take out a mortgage on their home that the light finally dawned, and she told her husband something awful had happened. >> and then she said, "i have-- i have given away every penny that we have." i felt like throwing up. you know, i mean, i just felt this gut punch. and i felt sick. >> i was asked by someone, "how could you be so stupid?" at the time that i was going through it, it was very real. >> as our population ages, the matter's only going to get worse. >> reporter: seniors have lost nearly $38 million to the scam, says senator susan collins. >> oftentimes our seniors are embarrassed when they reale that they've been ripped off, and they're too ashamed to admit that they've lost out their life's savings to a scammer. they shouldn't be embarrassed. they should report this.

u.s. installations on standby to house and quarantine up to 1,000 american evacuees from the outbreak zone. here is what we know. travis is capable of housing at least 250 people in individual rooms through february 29th. the base will only provide housing to evacuees. federal officials will be responsible for their care. the base released a statement saying airmen would not have direct contact with evacuees but some locals have concerns that their own safety could be at risk. >> it is very scary and it's really something that we need to be aware of. close to home. so to speak, yeah. definitely need to be cautious about it. >> the base also says evacuees would only have access to their assigned housing and anyone who falls ill would be transferred to a civilian hospital. it remains up clear when or if
