donald j. trump president of the united states is not guilty as charged. >> yesterday the republican led senate voted along party lines finding the president senator mitt romney was the only republican to cross party lines with a guilty vote on the abuse of power charge. overnight mr. trump took a shot at romney on twitter calling him a failed presidential candidate. protests broke out across the nation after the president's acquittal. demonstrators in san antonio, texas gathered outside of the alamo and one person held a sign saying "we'll bebe the jurors i november." naomi ruchim is in new york. what's next for the president? >> reporter: the president will address the nation at noon eastern today which he says will be a victory on the impeachment hoax. president trump supporters are vindicated and celebrating and call the articles of impeachment

baseless and a witch-hunt. president trump has been acquitted on the two charges he faced in the senate impeachment trial. abuse of power of obstruction of congress. >> it's over, america. >> you're going to get to pick the next president and not a bunch of presidents driven by sour grapes. >> reporter: utah's mitt romney became the first senator in history vote to remove a president of his own party voting guilty on abuse of power. >> i took an oath before god. >> reporter: the 2012 presidential candidate choked up as he spoke about his vote. >> corrupting an election to keep oneself in office is perhaps the most abusive and destructive violation of one's oath of office i can imagine. >> reporter: it did not go unnoticed by president trump. who tweeted this attack video. >> i do want to salute mitt romney. >> reporter: democrats who all voted for both articles said they were disappointed.

more republicans did not join them. >> fearful the president of the united states will campaign again them in a primary and it tells you a lot. >> reporter: mitch mcconnell said it's time to move on. >> as far as i'm concerned it's in the rear view mirror. >> reporter: house democrats say they may still subpoena john bolton and two gop senators are investigating hunter biden's dealings in ukraine what president trump asked ukraine to do in that phone call that kicked off the impeachment inquiry. two republican senators are asking the secret service to provide information related to biden's travel to ukraine and china during the obama administration. meantime minority leader chuck schumer said even after the vote democrats walked out of the chamber with their heads held high. >> thank you. now to the race for the white house, the iowa democratic party released more results from the

state's caucuses held earlier this week. the results are from 97% of the precincts. buttigieg is narrowly edging out bernie sanders. the south bend, indiana mayor is 26.2% ahead of sanders. elizabeth warren is in third with 18% and joe biden is in fourth place followed by amy klobuchar, andrew yang and tom steyer. this morning there's a confirmed case of the coronavirus in wisconsin. that brings the total number of cases in the u.s. to 12. meanwhile 10 more people on a cruise ship in japan have been diagnosed with the virus. two americans are among the new cases. in china there are more than 28,000 confirmed cases. the death toll there has soared to 563. officials in the country say the youngest person with the coronavirus is a newborn. the baby was infected 30 hours after birth.

china has ordered a crackdown on fake medical products and people who undermine efforts to stop the outbreak. here at home the cdc has begun shipping out test kits for the coronavirus. the kits are going to more than 100 labs in the u.s. and each one can test up to 100 patient samples. carter evans has the latest. >> reporter: the newest american evacuees from china were herded on to buses in myanmar where they will spend the next two weeks in these military quarters under close medical watch. even on the high seas the global response to the virus continues. more than 3700 people including 428 americans are facing two weeks locked away on this luxury cruise ship anchored off the coast of japan. passengers posted video showing the scene on board.

virtually deserted public places. confined to his cabin this man spoke from his balcony. >> breakfast or lunch is delivered to our state room. >> reporter: he says he doesn't have enough medication to last two week quarantine. >> i'll probably run out. >> reporter: the cdc has confirmed even more american evacuation flights are headed to the u.s. this week. medical teams have been deployed to an air force bases in texas and kansas where they are prepared to accept the next wave of evacuees. carter evans, cbs news, myanmar, california. the last 24 hours has brought dangerous weather to the middle of the country. tornadoes were spotted in mississippi and in louisiana where at least one person was hurt when scaffolding collapsed on cars below. the same system brought heavy snow to texas, oklahoma and missouri. forcing multiple cars off the road. meteorologist evelyn taft from our los angeles station kcbs has more on where the system is headed today.

>> reporter: good morning. tornado watches this morning in we are expecting tornadic activity, severe weather we could see downpours and very heavy rain as we move through the day. we're also talking rain, snow and ice moving towards the northeast right now. a closer look at the northeast. we'll continue to see that snow falling at least through tomorrow. travel could be affected over the next few days and we could expect to see some severe flooding all the way from the mid-atlantic to the south through tomorrow as well. otherwise, again, those thunderstorms continuing to threaten the south, through tonight and possibly through tomorrow. evelyn taft, cbs news. it's still not clear what caused a plane crash at an airport in istanbul but flights have resumed this morning.

the wreckage remains under guard. video shows pegasus flight landing and then disappearing into a ditch. three people were killed and more than 180 passengers were injured. many were forced to escape through cracks in the air craft's fuselage. another pegasus flight overshot a runway at the same airport just last month. hollywood lost a legend. one of the last stars from its golden age kirk douglas died yesterday at the age of 103. chris martinez looks back. >> reporter: kirk douglas was one of hollywood's tough guys. famous for his dimpled chin and brash actor. the actor was born in 1916 to poor russian immigrants. his father was a ragman who hoped his son would become a rabbi. but douglas used his charisma on camera. >> i apologize sir for not telling you sooner you're a

degenerati degenerative, sadistic old man. >> reporter: his distipgtive voice led him to many roles, especially "the champion." in 1960 douglas helped ending black listing by producing "spartacus". crediting a formally ostracized screen writer. he was one of the first actors to start his own company. the star of more than 80 films no performance ever earned him an oscar. instead he was given an honorary award. the father of michael douglas, kirk was an accomplished director and author. in 1981 he received the highest civilian award, the presidential medal of freedom. he survived a helicopter crash in 1991 while two others died. four years after that he suffered a stroke but recovered enough to continue to work. >> toughness means to persevere, not to be knockes i gh

a a scary scene in oklahoma captured on camera. last night an suv lost control and hit a state trooper on the side of the road. the officer was taken to the hospital with nonthreatening injuries. the road was wet at the time of the accident and may have played a role. authorities have issued a warning about a lethal drug and there are new details in the case of missing idaho children. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. our salt lake city affiliate

reports new surveillance video may provide additional clues into the disappearance of two idaho children. the video appears to show their mother, laury vallow and another man visiting a storage facility shortly after 7-year-old "j-j-" and 17-year-old tylee ryan vanished last september. they visited the unit several times last fall. inside police found bikes, photos and other children's items. the mother and her new husband were seen in hawaii. she violated a court order to bring her children to idaho. "denver post" reports the parents of a missing colorado springs boy made an emotional plea for help. the 11-year-old disappeared on january 17th. his stepmother said the last time she saw him was when he went to a friend's house. in a video released yesterday

the boy's parents asked anyone who may know where he is to come forward. >> i don't even have answers other than i'm afraid. i'm afraid i'll never hear his voice or hear him run and say mommy. >> the fbi and colorado law enforcement are investigating the boy's disappearance. scores of police and volunteers have been searching for him. and cbsnews.com reports police in louisiana are warning the public about a drug that's so dangerous they say you shouldn't even touch it. the potentially deadly drug is called gray death. it looks like concrete mix. it's heroin cut with fentanyl. it also macon taken a drug used to tranquilize large animals. the dea says it's 80 to 100 times stronger than heroin and reportedly first started appearing in georgia and alabama in 2017. still to come, bernie madoff's plea for compassion. why he wants to be released from prison early. he wants to be released from

>> reporter: before we get to madoff and mcdonald's, let's talk economic calendar. investors will get a weekly snapshot of the labor market with data on initial jobless claims due. stocks rallied yesterday led by gains of financial companies. the dow soared 483 points. the nasdaq added 40 points finishing at a new all time high. s&p 500 gained 37 also a record. lawyers for ponzi scheme mastermind bernie madoff asked a federal court to grant him a compassionate release from his 150 year prison sentence. the 81-year-old disgraced financier has been given less than 8 months to live because of end stage renal disease. madoff effectively wiped out thousands of americans life savings in the largest ponzi scheme in history.

ever for a nasa astronaut. she spent 328 days on the international space station and took part in the first all female spacewalk. >> there you go. body cam video caught the moment a georgia police officer saved a baby's month last night. herald drummond performed cpr on the child with his fingers. the 6-month-old suddenly began crying. he's okay and back with his parent who is grateful for drummond's heroic actions. a massive crowd filled the treats to celebrate the kansas city chiefs super bowl win. some camped out for hours to catch a glimpse of the team. there was a brief scare when an impaired driver drove through a parade barrier. police eventually stopped the driver. two people inside that car were arrested but no one was hurt. coming up only on "cbs this

find a white man walking in a black neighborhood, see what happens. >> reporter: the saline area school district which is 90% white called the monday meeting after a snap check conversation between high school football players titled racist surfaced. in it players reportedly wrote white power and referred to black players in the chat with the n-word. >> racism has got to go. >> reporter: saline rallied. in a statement the school district denounced the comments writing this type of bigotry goes against all the values and believes of our school. saline has a lot of work to do. they need to ask themselves what can we do better to include everybody. >> reporter: we tried to reach tom by phone and at home and couldn't interview him. one of his sons spoke out online saying his father's quote views of hate in no way represent his own. adriana diaz, cbs news, saline, michigan.
