good morning. i'm laura podesta in for anne-marie green. a powerful winter storm that spawned tornadoes in the deep south is taking aim at the northeast. rain and snow is already falling in new england. the storm is responsible for at least four deaths in a front that stretched from the gulf states to new england. in tampa, florida, heavy wind and rain caused crane to fall shutting down a major interstate. in north carolina scary moments for students atk winston-state university. >> reporter: workers at this south carolina furniture store fought to keep torrential rain and wind outside. nearby downed power lines and trees littered the landscape and trucks overturned toppled by storm force winds.

>> all i heard was the loud wind and i got in the bathtub. >> reporter: the parking lot at the greenville zoo looked more like a lake. the powerful and deadly winter at the raleigh-durham in alabama a tornado ripped apart homes reportedly kil ng ondebris was thrown a quarter mile. here in spartanburg there are trees like this 100-year-old oak down all over town. this one came down and split a home in half. fortunately the owners were not here at the time and were down the street and took shelter at a neighbor's home. in georgia a suspected tornado left this house in ruins and fierce winds downed a large tree on to one of atlanta's busiest interstates. no one was hurt. janet shamlian, cbs news, spartanburg, south carolina. president trump did not hold

back in some of his first remarks since being acquitted in his impeachment trial. yesterday mr. trump delivered a profanity laced speech where he labelled democrats as very ill and sick people. he lashed out at house speaker nancy pelosi calling her a horrible person and said the trial's lead prosecutor adam schiff was a corrupt politician. mr. trump called senator mitt cawho relion as a crutch. the president reiterated that he did nothing wrong regarding ukraine and also called robert mueller's russia investigation all b.s. president trump also took time out to praise his legal team. but he did not mention his personal attorney rudy giuliani whose efforts in ukraine were at the center of the impeachment inquiry. naomi ruchim is in new york. what's been the reaction to the president's comments? >> reporter: the president's supporters are pleased. his news conference was like a campaign rally. he was greeted with applause and his legal team received a standing ovation.

democrats are not letting up and senate majority leader chuck schumer held his own news conference in response where he said the president was on his self-righteous horse. president trump took a victory lap now that the senate impeachment trial is officially over. >> i never thought the word would sound so good. called total acquittal. >> reporter: the east room of the white house turned into the bully pulpit as the president recapped various so-called witch-hunts. >> when i fired that sleaze bag the lovers, russia, russia, russia, it was all [bleep] >> reporter: mr. trump singled out mitt romney the lone republican who crossed party lines. >> i swore an oath before god. >> you have some people who use religion as a crutch. >> reporter: while the president called for bipartisanship at the end of his remarks, earlier comments suggest he's not about to extend an olive branch.

>> adam schiff is a vicious horrible person. nancy pelosi is a horrible person. >> he's impeached forever. >> reporter: house speaker nancy pelosi. >> next year we'll have a new president of the united states. that's an imperative for our country. >> reporter: president trump's hour long speech was a stark contrast to president clinton's brief national apology after his acquittal. >> i want to say, again, to the american people, how profoundly sorry i am. >> reporter: mr. trump apologized to his family. >> for having them to have to go through a phoney, rotten deal. >> reporter: the president head to north carolina today for a speech on economic development. and for those wondering if the president's re-election campaign is concerned about the impeachment hurting his chances in november it's quite the opposite. instead it's a prominent talking point for his team posing the

president as tough and defiant in the face of many enemies. >> naomi ruchim in new york. thanks. >> now to the battle for the white house. the iowa democratic party says it has released 100% of the results of the iowa caucus. pete buttigieg is maintaining a narrow lead with 26.2%. bernie sanders is just .1% behind. both men are claiming victory. the tight race comes as seven democratic candidates gear up for a debate tonight in new hampshire. >> reporter: even in the snow the race for the democratic presidential nomination is heating up ahead of next week's new hampshire primary. >> i know who i voted for in the last election but i'm not quite there yet. i'm seriously listening to everybody. >> reporter: senator bernie sanders who represents neighboring vermont trounced hillary clinton here four years ago. state polls shows a tight race. >> when you get 6,000 more votes that's generally regarded the winner.

>> reporter: sanders and pete buttigieg are claiming victory. >> new hampshire is new hampshire. and new hampshire is not the kind of place to let iowa or anybody else tell you what to do. >> reporter: new hampshire democrats will be watcing tonight's debate closely. they have days to decide which candidate they want to see challenge president trump in november. senator elizabeth warren who finished third in iowa crisscrossed new hampshire thursday, holding babies and visiting schools. former vice president joe biden who says he expected to do better than fourth in the caucuses is working to convince voters he's the most electable. >> i believe we'll finish in the top two in new hampshire. >> people across america looks for a candidate who can beat trump, represent their interests. >> reporter: minnesota senator amy klobuchar, billionaire tom steyer and andrew yang will look for a break out performance at the debate to keep their campaigns alive.

the ninth and tenth democratic debates are set to take place in las vegas ahead of the nevada caucuses and charleston, south carolina ahead of that state's primary. former new york city mayor michael bloomberg could end up on the stage as dnc qualification rules have changed. hundreds more americans evacuated from the epicenter of china's coronavirus are headed back to the u.s. nearly 250 evacuees will arrive in san antonio, texas. 70 others will head to omaha, nebraska. they will be quarantined on military bases for two weeks and monitored for symptoms for the flu-like virus. meanwhile another flight is expected to land in san diego a sepate grof evacs already in quarantine at a military base there. the number of suspected coronavirus cases linked to that group has now jumped to five. airlines around the world are

extending suspensions to the city of wuhan. that includes major u.s. carriers like american, united and delta. 41 new cases of the deadly virus have been found today on a japanese cruise ship under quarantine. that brings the total cases to 61 on the ship. earlier 20 passengers including three americans tested positive for the virus. ramy inocencio spoke to an american on the ship, she's among 3700 passengers on lock down. >> reporter: looking at nearly two more weeks confined to her cabin, trudie is unsettled. >> apparently we're going to be allowed to stretch our legs. but we're being supervised when we do that and we can only go to a center area of the ship. and we must mask up. >> reporter: she says she feels like an alien. >> we see these people masked, gowned, gloves. it's like people that deliver food to our room. you open the door and you feel like e.t. at the end of the movie.

>> reporter: in china one of the doctors that sounded the alarm died of the illness. two newborns, one barely 30 hours old have been diagnosed with the virus. here in hong kong another 4,000 people have been quarantined on this ship, the world dream over the past two days. that's after more than 30 crew members complained of feeling sick, coughing and fever. they are waiting on final test results. ramy inocencio, cbs news, hong kong. coming up on the morning news a public memorial for kobe bryant is set as fans prepare to say farewell to the basketball great. an apology from disney. how the company plans to help a school that was fined for showing the "lion king". this is the "cbs morning news". the prosecution called its final witness after more than two weeks of testimony and lawyers for the disgraced movie mogul began calling witnesses. they haven't said if harvey weinstein will testify. harvey weinstein's attorneys asked the why do dismiss the case but the judge rejected that. harvey weinstein maintains any sexual encounters were consensual. a public memorial for kobe bryant has been scheduled and charges are filed at a mass shooting at walmart. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the el paso times reports the man accused of killing 22 people and wounding others faces federal charges including hate crimes. yesterday federal prosecutors announced the charges against patrick wood crusius. he's accused of opening fire at an el paso wall matter last august and targeting mexicans. the department of justice said it's going on the offense against people plotting racist attacks. >> our top goal is always to stop threats before they

materialize. it's difficult work and made harder by the amount of racist propaganda online which can inspire lone actors who don't have criminal records or have contacts with hate groups to commit aintroduce the cities. patrick wood crusius faces a possible death penalty. he pleaded not guilty to a state capital charge last year. kcbs says staple center will hold a public memorial service for kobe bryant. and the eight others killed in last month's helicopter crash. the event is scheduled for february 24th and that date combines bryant's jersey number 24 with the number 2 jersey worn by his 13-year-old daughter gianna. she was also killed in the crash. there's been no official announcement about the memorial and no details released. and "usa today" reports disney ceo bob iger apologized to a california elementary school after it was charged $250 for showing the "lion king" at a pta fundraiser.

s&p 500 added 11, also a record. a new software glitch has been found on boeing 737 max. the issue involves a warning light staying on longer than needed. the light is associated with a device on the tail of the aircraft which raises and lowers the plane's nose. boeing said the problem will not further delay the aircraft's return to service. the faa grounded the max fleet last year following two deadly crashes overseas. audi is recalling its vehicles because of takata airbag problem. the recall involves 170,000 older vehicles sold in the u.s. the automatic says inflaters made by takata could malfunction and spew shrapnel in a crash. they recalled more than a million back in december. the latest problem led to one death. carmaker is working to manufacture replacement parts. are you looking to spend your valentine's day with a furry friend? coors light is offering help towards adoption fees. they will give $100 for those

scientists studying climate change recorded a dramatic example of it last week when a massive chunk of ice broke off a glacier in antarctica. it's about 130 feet high. it left five square miles of what had been opened ocean blanketed in ice. and there's alarming news for millions of people who live along the great lakes. the army corps of engineers says three of the five lakes, michigan huron and superior broke january records for water levels. all that water is now forcing many people with waterfront property into a battle to save their homes. >> nobody has seen how quick and how much property has been lost in such a short amount of time with this type of erosion. >> the last two years were the wettest in more than a century for the great lakes, which almost guarantees another season of unusually high water levels.

our top stories this morning, a powerful winter storm is taking aim at the northeast. parts of new england has already seen up to six inches of snow. the storm also spawned tornadoes across the south. the governor of virginia has declared a state of emergency. the storm has killed four people. president trump did not hold back in some of his first remarks since being acquitted in his impeachment trial. he took direct aim at house speaker nancy pelosi and congressman adam schiff. mr. trump also thanked his legal team but did not mention his personal attorney rudy giuliani. and oscars weekend in hollywood. voting closed on tuesday for all 24 categories but it's anyone's guess which films will make

history on sunday night. chris martinez has a preview. >> reporter: they are rolling out the red carpet at the dolby theater as hollywood gets ready to honor its very best. this year the comic book inspired "joker" leads the pack with 11 nominations by followed by "the irishman," "1917" and "once upon a time in hollywood". each with ten nods. they are among nine films all vying for best picture. >> for me this was a really good year in film. >> reporter: variety magazine says this year no one film is expected to sweep the awards, which could mean a night of surprises. for the second year in a row the ceremony itself will be streamlined with a long list of celebrity presenters replacing the traditional show host. >> everybody is a little nervous. is this going to change the dna of the oscars. it didn't. the ratings were up. tv audience liked that. i think they will stick with it. >> reporter: beyond the winners this year there's a dark cloud
