good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with the fight for new hampshire. democratic candidates crisscross the state today ahead of tomorrow's first primary. bernie sanders has a slight lead over pete buttigieg. 29% of likely new hampshire primary voters will go for sanders. 25% for buttigieg. senator elizabeth warren is in third place with 17% followed by former vice president joe biden and amy klobuchar. the sanders campaign plans to ask for a partial recanvas of the results of last week's iowa caucus. the iowa democratic party released results projecting buttigieg as the winner with the most delegates. laura podesta is in new hampshire. how are voters making up their minds? >> reporter: good morning. everything i've heard from voters here in new hampshire is that they are still very much undecided. that's why we've seen these

candidates campaigning so aggressively, holding so many rallies to gain that last minute support. temperatures are near freezing in new hampshire, but it's not stopping voters from coming out to learn more about the democratic candidates. waiting to hear pete buttigieg speak this couple tells me they are married but divorced on whether to vote for him in tuesday's primary. >> he's the anti-trump. >> has a lot of good ideas but somebody has to be able to weather the storm when donald trump comes in to attack. >> reporter: bernie sanders is leading in new hampshire with 29% support. >> we'll set the pace to win in nevada and south carolina and california. >> reporter: buttigieg is polling close behind at 25%. many of his recent gains come at the expense of joe biden who recently released this ad mocking buttigieg's accomplishments as mayor of south bend, indiana. >> this guy is not barack obama. >> we need to start to get

washington to look more like our best run cities and towns. >> reporter: one of the big questions ahead of tuesday's primary is voter turnout because iowa fell well below expectations. a professor of political science at the university of n new hampshire predicts more people will vote in this primary compared to 2016. >> new hampshire democrats have been pretty excited as are democrats nation wide about perhaps getting this president out of office. >> reporter: president trump narrowly lost this state to hillary clinton in 2016. he'll be here tonight to rally his supporters. i also want to mention amy klobuchar could be the dark horse in tuesday's primary. she has seen her fundraising skyrocket after her performance in friday's debate and her name has come up a lot with voters i've spoken to. >> interesting. so ahead on "cbs this morning" we'll talk with former vice president joe biden how he

plans to break through with primary voters in new hampshire. hollywood's biggest night did not disappointment. the 92ndual academy awards was filled with historic wips and shocking upsets last night. some controversies also took center stage. chris martinez reports from los gatos. >> reporter: the south korean social satire "parasite" made history at the 92nd academy awards becoming the first film not in the english language to win best picture. >> we never imagined this to happen. we're so happy. >> reporter: the movie's director won best director. "parasite" won best international film and best original screenplay. "joker," joaquin phoenix won for best actor. his first oscar. he used the podium to speak about animal rights and climate change. >> greatest gift that it's given us and many in this room is the opportunity to use our voice for the voiceless.

>> reporter: renee zellweger took home best actress honors for her portrayal of judy garland in "judy." lawyera dern won best supporting actress for "marriage story". brad pitt won his award in once upon in hollywood. many calling out a lack of minority nominees in the acting categories and women nominees for best director. a musical number opened the show taking a swipe at lack of women nominees for best director. former host steve martin and chris rock also called out the academy for this year's lack of diversity among the acting categories. chris martinez, cbs news, los angeles. this morning at least 66

more cases of the coronavirus have been confirmed on a japanese cruise ship. at least 13 american passengers are among those infected. more than 130 cases in total have been reported. the ship was placed on a two week quarantine after a man who disembarked in hong kong was diagnosed with the virus. in china the death toll has spiked to more than 900 with more than 40,000 cases. malaysia, south korea and vietnam also reported one new case each. meanwhile the mother of a doctr in wuhan is demanding answers after his death. we have more on how japan is scrambling to contain the outbreak. >> reporter: japan is scrambling to prevent the 70 cases of coronavirus on the princess diamond cruise ship moored in yokohama. there's a lot at stake. the country is preparing to welcome visitors to the olympic games in tokyo this summer and needs to show it can contain the

infection. 13 americans are among the confirmed cases. all passengers are confined to their rooms. >> we're prepared to do the 14 days. but i don't think it's even safe to be here. >> reporter: hong kong is also taking no chances at its borders. now travellers not only from wuhan but anywhere in mainland china would have to submit to a 14 day quarantine monitored by gps enabled wrist bands. in hubei province, china over 50 million people remain under siege. china is being criticized for failing to respond to early warnings about the coronavirus. the doctor who died was silenced when he sounded the alarm about a new virus infecting people late last year. chinese ambassador on "face the nation". >> i don't know who tried to silent him but there was certainly disagreement or people

were not able to reach agreement on what exactly the virus is. >> reporter: now what's clear it's not only the virus but the fear of it that's spreading so rapidly. two u.s. soldiers were killed in a so-called insider attack at a base in eastern afghanistan. six others were also wounded. military officials say someone in an afghan uniform began firing a machine gun on u.s. and afghan forces late saturday. the two u.s. soldiers who died in the attack have been identified as sergeant first class gutierrez and sergeant rodriguez. an investigation into the incident is under way. coming up on the morning news, new york city officers are ambushed in separate attacks and a mission to the sun. a spacecraft is on its way to make solar discoveries. this is the "cbs morning news". solar discoveries.

a nasa rocket carrying the european space agency is on a multiyear voyage that will take it around the sun. it kill capture the first pictures of the sun's poles. the solar orbiter will join with nasa's parker solar probe launched one and a half years ago to study the sun. new york city police are targeted in separate attacks. lindsey graham issues a warning about russian propaganda. those are southeast headlines on the morning newsstands. south carolina senator lindsey graham appeared on cbs's "face the nation". the chairman of the senate judiciary committee said the justice department has a new process that will allow president trump's personal attorney rudy giuliani to submit information he collected in ukraine to be vetted. giuliani met with former ukrainian prosecutors late last year.

they claim to have knowledge of unsubstantiated wrong doings by former vice president joe biden and his son hunter. in december giuliani said he planned to draft a report of his findings for congressional republicans and the attorney general. >> if rudy giuliani has any information coming out of the ukraine he needs to turn it over to the department of justice because it could be russian propaganda. >> graham defended president trump's decision to fire lieutenant colonel alexander vindman from the national security council. and u.s. ambassador to the european union gordon sondland. both men gave damaging testimony against mr. trump during a house impeachment hearing. our new york station wcbs reports new york city's mayor and police commissioner calling takes on police over the weekend assassination attempts. two police officers were shot and wounded in separate ambushes over the weekend. robert williams was arrested

after police say he walked into a bronx precinct station yesterday and started shooting. one officer was shot in the arm. williams was apprehended after he ran out of bullets. 12 hours earlier williams fired shots at two officers inside a patrol van and got away. one officer was hurt in that attack. >> we have to understand this, as a city, as a nation, our entire society has to under an attack on a police officer is an attack on all of us. it's an attack on a democratic society, a decent society. >> williams has a long criminal history, including a 2002 gunfight with police. he was paroled from prison in 2017 after an attempted murder conviction. the "los angeles times" says a public memorial service will be held today for three victims of last month's helicopter crash that killed kobe bryant and eight others. today's service for john altobelli and his daughter and wife will be held in anaheim.

on the "cbs money watch" a preview of president trump's budget proposal. airbnb suspends bookings among the coronavirus outbreak. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> reporter: stocks skidded on friday as fears intensified over the coronavirus slowing china's economic growth. the dow skidded 277 point. the nasdaq dropped 51 and the s&p 500 was down. investors hoping for a rebound today. today, the president is set to unveil a $4.8 trillion budget plan. calls for an increase in military spending. the plan proposes a massive cut in nondefense activities. social security and medicare benefits will remain untouched. the president will request $2 billion for his border wall and includes a plan to extend the contested tax overhaul

republicans passed in 2017. the budget is unlikely to win the approval of congress. china is expected to lose millions of tourism dollars over the rapidly spreading coronavirus. an estimated $920 million lost to the chinese city this year. airlines including major u.s. carriers like united, delta and american have suspended travel to and from china. meantime airbnb is suspending bookings in beijing until the end of february. the decision only impacts the country's capital. "birds of prey" finished first at the box office. but didn't hit the mark at home. the film brought in $33.3 million. projections headed at 50 million. "bad boys for life" came in

oscar winner laura dern kept it elegant. >> i'm wearing armani. >> reporter: there was a futuristic red ruffle dress. many heads were turning. belly eilish was dripping from head to toe in chanel. monet wore a sparkling gown with a matching head scarf. charlize theron brought hollywood glamour in a black gown. joaquin phoenix kept his "joker" stays on while wearing sunglasses. oscar winner brad pitt looked dapper in a velvet tux. spike lee wore a purple and gold suit with kobe's number 24 that caught everybody's attention. this year it was all about being bold. >> that was brittany hopper reporting. for the first time in years a commercial passenger plane has flown across the atlantic ocean in less than five hours. a british airways flight left jfk airport and arrived at

heathrow in four hours and 56 minutes. flight radar 24 said the plane set a new speed record for supersonic commercial aircraft to fly between the two cities. the recent average flight time between new york and london is five hours and 16 minutes. flight radar 24 said the wind and air currents were ideal for a fast flight. some slower travel is being celebrated in mexico. conservationists returned seven turtles back to the ocean yesterday following their recovery from a dangerous red tide that swept through the southern pacific mexico coastline. last month 11 turtles were rescued from beaches after consuming sea creatures that showed high levels of algae toxin from red tide. 29 turtles have already died. the turtles released yesterday are expected to make a full recovery. coming up on "cbs this morning" a rising star in the fashion and beauty industry is

best actor award for "joker." every year thousands of veterans take a once in a lifetime trip to our capital. this year new technology is making sure no one is left behind. >> reporter: every year retired u.s. navy admiral jim hart leads hundreds of world war ii, korean and vietnam vets from florida to washington on a free one day trip called honor flight. they visit the memorials built to honor those who served. >> they came home, wasn't a lot of fanfare. they were never honored for what they had done. >> reporter: but with many vets in their '80s and '90s it's difficult for some to make the trip so honor flight teamed up with hospice of st. francis and with the help of virtual reality are making sure every veteran can experience the trip even if it's from their living room. >> put these on. >> reporter: 89-year-old john schultz who served in the korean war was diagnosed with a lung disease and relies on an oxygen tank to breathe, making it
