we begin with america decides 2020. the first in the nation primary is under way in new hampshire. overnight the first ballot were cast in the tiny community of dixville notch. former mayor michael bloomberg won there with three write-in votes. one from a republican and two from democrats. right now the latest results from new hampshire show senator amy klobuchar leading the pack. senators bernie sanders and elizabeth warren are tied followed by andrew yang, pete buttigieg, and joe biden. laura podesta is in manchester, new hampshire. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. so the latest results and the recent polls show just how unsettled ththis race is. it appeared that senator bernie sanders of neighboring vermont was going to win new hampshire handedly, now it looks like voters are leaning more moderate. at midnight, the first votes of the first in the nation primary were cast in dixville notch, new hampshire. >> two write-in votes for mike bloomberg. >> reporter: a small victory for

michael bloomberg, three of the voters, two democrats and one republican write-in in ballots for the mayor. in states that can give national balance, voter katherine talbott is looking for someone who can beat president trump. >> we really need to make a change because our country is on a very wrong trend. >> reporter: she's split between senators elizabeth warren and amy klobuchar. >> let's surprise the nation. let's get this done! >> reporter: it's vermont senator bernie sanders leading in the new hampshire polls. >> let's win this thing. let's transform america! >> reporter: sanders is trying to hold off pete buttigieg. >> don't listen to anybody who tells you got to choose one way with your heart or the other way with your head. >> reporter: remember, whoever wins the democratic primary does not necessarily win new hampshire in the general election. president trump lost to hillary clinton in 2016 by a slim margin, just 2,800 votes. >> i'm trying to figure out who

is the weakest candidate -- >> reporter: president trump told supporters in manchester he's not concerned about his future opponent. >> they don't know what the hell they're doing. >> reporter: in the republican primary four years ago, dixville notch voted for former ohio governor john kasich, but the senate went to president trump. and as you heard, during his rally last night, president trump urged independents who can vote in either primary to pick the weakest democrat to run against him in november. so clearly, anne-marie, he's trying to influence the nominating process. >> just a little bit. laura podesta in manchester, thank you so much. so coming up on "cbs this morning," tony dokoupil is in new hampshire for the first in the nation primary. a new case of the coronavirus has been confirmed in california. the patient had been evacuated from the epicenter of the outbreak in china and is currently under observation in a san diego hospital. this latest infection now brings the total number of cases in the u.s. to at least 13.

china's daily death toll from the virus topped 100 for the first time. more than 1,000 have died from the virus. worldwide, more than 42,000 people have been infected. meanwhile, 11 americans are among the 66 new cases on a japanese cruise ship. an oregon woman found out on board that she had the virus. >> it was a very surreal experience to be told that you have this virus that, you know, as far as i knew could be deadly. >> in hong kong, extreme caution is being exercised. travelers from anywhere in mainland china are quarantined vir 14 days. criminal offense. at least six people were killed after a suicide bomber targeted a military act in afghanistan. it happened near a police checkpoint outside accountable. -- out kabul. officials confirm two civilians

and four military personnel died. at least 12 others were wounded in that attack. no one has claimed responsibility. an exclusive video obtained by cbs news shows the moment after kobe bryant's helicopter crashed. it's part of the evidence the ntsb is now using to determine why the chopper went down last month. kris van cleave reports. this is horrible. >> reporter: dramatic, new video at the crash site moments after the helicopter carrying kobe bryant and eight others went down. the wreckage still burning. the force of the crash scattered pieces of the chopper across the mountainside. >> the smell of the fuel burning and the smoke and the air, like it was just so thick and heavy. >> reporter: what -- >> you couldn't breathe. >> reporter: michael dyer was mountain biking with a friend nearby. he heard the helicopter flying low but couldn't see it in the fashion. >> we were yelling, hey, are there survivors? there's nobody that could have survived this. >> reporter: the video is being reviewed by the ntsb. vanessa bryant, kobe's widow, posted this

instagram video of her husband with gianna playing basketball. she's sharing her message of grief for others suffering a similar loss. "my brain refused to accept that both kobe and gigi are gone. why should i be able to wake up another day when my baby girl isn't able to have that opportunity?" she also posted this milestone moment for 7-month-old capri. >> reporter: memorials continue at angels stadium in anaheim where the altobellis will be remembered. john was a college baseball coa coach. their daughter was a teammate of kobe's daughter. kris van cleave, washington. china is denying engaging in a cyber theft after four members of the chinese army were indicted for hacking into one of america's leading credit agencies. investigators say the hackers this access to equifax computer systems for months, stealing the personal information of about half the u.s. population. according to the indictment, the criminals stole the driver's license numbers of at least ten million americans along with

credit card numbers and other personally identifiable information belonging to 200,000 americans. cbs news asked federal authorities if americans should be worried. >> is there evidence that this stolen information is already being used? >> there is not at this time. >> the hack which began three years ago rocked equifax. it led to a congressional probe. the resignation of a company ceo, and a settlement of up to $700 million to compensate the victims of the attack. a model delivered stunning testimony in harvey weinstein's sexual assault trial, debunking one of his accuser's claims. claudia salinas took the stand. she denied that she stood by and did nothing while weinstein sexually assaulted one of his accusers in 2013. her claim contradicts one of weinstein's accusers who testified last week. weinstein is charged with assaulting two women in new york city. he's maintained any sexual encounters were consensual.

new information in the case of two missing children from idaho. the two were seen last september. cbs news has learned that a cell phone belonging to ryan was found in hawaii with the girl's mother, lori vallo. a source close to the investigation says the phone was used several times after ryan disappeared. vallo and her new husband are believed to be living in hawaii. both have denied wrongdoing. two police officers were wounded after a suspect opened fire on them. it happened yesterday morning at a walmart store in forest city. the officers responded to the scene after receiving a call about a man making threats. the suspect was killed in an exchange of gunfire. both officers are okay. and torrential rain is hammering the deep south. parts of yazoo city, mississippi, were under water. some drivers were left stranded by flash floods. seven million people are under flood alerts today from texas to

[ applause ] a new york city police officer shot during an ambush inside a police station walked out of the hospital yesterday. surveillance video shows the suspect, robert williams, opening fire inside a police station on sunday. williams is also accused of shooting at two officers inside a police van saturday night. one officer in the van was wounded and is out of the hospital. prosecutors say williams confessed to both shootings. three victims from last month's helicopter crash outside los angeles are remembered, and the pentagon admits to more

"the new york times" reports more than 100 u.s. troops have traumatic brain injuries from iran's missile strikes last month at an air base in iraq. the number of injured in the air strike has increased dramatically from initial accounts. hours after the attack the trump administration said no americans were hurt. two weeks later, mr. trump described the injuries as headaches. officials say 76 of the 109 troops diagnosed with brain injuries have returned to duty. "usa today" reports prosecutors released court documents showing a fake resume touting the rowing achievements of actress lori loughlin's daughter olivia jade. it list years of rowing experience including multiple gold, silver, and bronze medals won in competitions. loughlin and her husband are accused of paying $500,000 to have their daughters designated as crew recruits to get into usc.

congress, and a judge is clearing the way for a telecom merger. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> reporter: good morning. federal reserve chairman jerome powell kicks off two days of testimony. he will face questions from congress over how the central bank might respond to new economic uncertainties coming from china amid the spread of the coronavirus. meantime, stocks closed higher yesterday led by gains in tech shares. the dow jones industrials gained 174 points. the nasdaq hit a new record jumping 107. the s&p 500 was up 24. also a record. a federal judge will reportedly allow t-mobile's $26.5 billion merger with sprint to move forward. the nation's third and fourth largest wireless carriers have argued the merger would speed up the timeline for 5g technology. according to reports, a judge is expected to rule against the attorneys generals of 13 dates and d.c. who are suing to block the merger on antitrust concerns.

a decision is expected to be made public today. amazon wants to question president trump after losing a bid for a $10 billion military contract. the pentagon awarded the cloud computing project to microsoft in october. amazon later sued arguing mr. trump's interference and bias against the tech company's founder and ceo jeff bezos harmed amazon's chances. the white house has not responded for requests from comment. google's head of human resources is stepping down. the move comes amid escalating tensions between employees. she will reportedly take on another role within the company. google's workplace culture has been roiled in recent years by the handling of sexual harassment claims against top executives. it spurred a mass walkout in 2018. now's your chance to have all the guac you want, and no, it's not extra. part of chipotle's promotion. it allows customers to get free

today the best of group winners will be awarded and go on to this evening's championship. historically, terriers have dominated this portion of the show with 47 wins. president trump has set a deadline to get astronauts back on the moon by 2024. he's asking congress to increase nasa's budget to $85 billion to do so. to help make sure the rocket that gets them there is safe, tests are being carried out at nasa's research facility in silicon valley. its wind tunnel technology has helped develop every spacecraft the u.s. has ever launched. and the facility is expected to receive $750 million of that budget to help meet their goal. >> it's a long-term effort to get us there, but yes, this keeps us on track for 2024. >> no human has been back on the moon since the "apollo 17" mission in 1972. major league baseball may
