captioning funded by cbs good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. i'm anne-marie green. senator bernie sanders is the winner of the new hampshire primary making him the front-runner in the race for the democratic presidential nomination. sanders got 25.9% of the vote. pete buttigieg was close behind with more than 24%. amy klobuchar placed third with 20%. elizabeth warren and joe biden followed in single digits. moments after the results were in sanders spoke to his supporters. >> this victory here is the beginning of the end for donald trump. >> meanwhile andrew yang and michael bennet suspended their presidential campaigns after poor showings in iowa and new hampshire. laura podesta is in manchester, new hampshire.

february 22nd. we're also getting a look at a new cbs news exit poll taking an in depth look at the critical issues for new hampshire primary voters. now they were asked sort of a question that limited them to only certain issues but what were the results? >> reporter: certainly. this was a cbs news poll as you mentioned of new hampshire voters and they said that health care is the number one issue, 37% followed by climate change and 25% income in equality and foreign policy came in last at 10%. >> all right, laura podesta in manchester. thank you. there are new developments in the case against roger stone. a long time ally of president trump. the entire team prosecuting stone abruptly resigned yesterday. it happened after the justice department said it planned to reduce the recommended sentence for stone. president trump lashed out the at the prosecutors on twitter overnight saying they cut and ran after being exposed for recommending a ridiculous nine

year prison sentence to a man that got caught up in an investigation that was illegal. jeff pegues has more. >> reporter: president trump said he did not ask the justice department to lower its sentencing recommendation for his friend roger stone. >> the recommendation was ridiculous. i thought the whole prosecution was ridiculous. >> reporter: the controversy started when prosecutors asked a judge to sentence stone to seven to nine years in prison. president trump responded on twitter calling it horrible and a miscarriage of justice. the justice department's decision argued for a shorter sentence and overruled their own prosecutors prompted four of them to resign in an apparent protest. >> how unusual is it for doj to reverse course like this? >> in this case it's stunning. a fundamental rule of the department of justice is not to

interfere politically with criminal prosecutions, especially on behalf of the president. >> reporter: in a late filing the justice department said they were leaving the sentencing to the judge in this case and the original seven to nine year sentencing recommendation would not be appropriate. jeff pegues, cbs news, washington. a powerful winter storm is impacting much of the country this morning. nearly 30 million americans are under winter weather advisories today from oklahoma all the way to new york. yesterday several inches of snow fell in amarillo, texas. transportation officials are warning roads may be iced over creating dangerous conditions for the morning commute. more snow is expected this morning as well, which has prompted some schools and businesses to delay or close. one of japan's health ministry employees contracted the coronavirus after serving passengers on a cruise ship

being held under quarantine. 39 of the more than 3600 crew and passengers have tested positive. that now brings the total number of cases on the ship to at least 175. officials in china say the rate of infection is slowly beginning to fall. the death toll there has topped 1100. total number of confirmed cases stands at nearly 45,000. the world health organization is calling the virus a very grave threat that could have more powerful consequences than a terrorist attack. back home johnson & johnson is joining forces with the u.s. agency to speed up the development of a coronavirus vaccine. carter evans has more on american evacuees just released from a california military base. >> reporter: medical masks were tossed in celebration when 195 american evacuees were finally released after 14 days under quarantine. >> today is the last day. we're heading home. >> reporter: jarred evans fled from wuhan.

the epicenter of the coronavirus. are you concerned about how you might be accepted when you return home? >> it's been in the back of my mind. >> reporter: in san diego health officials confirm one of the passengers who arrived there on a flight last week is infected. the patient is in the hospital and said to be doing well. the largest coronavirus outbreak outside of china is on a cruise ship docked in yokohama, japan where 3600 people are under quarantine after more than 130 cases were confirmed including 23 americans and 10 crew members. binay kumar sarkar works side-by-side with other crew members fearful that close quarters cold spread the virus among them. two travellers from china are still on base finishing out their quarantine. for those american evacuee, the cdc says they are all virus free and no further health checkups are required. carter evans, cbs news. firefighters battled a huge

fire early this morning after an explosion at an exxonmobil refinery in baton rouge, louisiana. flames were seen shooting from the refinery. exxonmobil volunteer fire team responded to the scene. exxon said its crew had the fire contained to the area where it started. baton rouge fire officials say air quality is fine but being monitored. no evacuations and no initial reports of any injuries. some heart pounding new video out of ohio captures a terrifying school bus crash. we want to warn you it's a little hard to watch. police say the bus was hit in december by a car that ran a red light in perry county. the force of the impact caused the bus to roll over. students were thrown from their seats, striking the ceiling of the bus. several students, the bus driver

downtown chicago. yesterday a special grand jury indicted the former empire actor on six counts of disorderly conduct for lying to police about the attack. last year prosecutors suddenly dropped similar charges against jussie smollett. a special prosecutor was then appointed to investigate the case. jussie smollett's attorney questioned the new investigation, saying the same detectives who handled the original case also conducted the new investigation. "vanity fair" reports the defense called its final witness in the new york city rape and sexual assault trial of harvey weinstein. weinstein did not testify. he's accused of raping one woman in 2013 and sexually assaulting another woman in 2006. a total of six women who claimed they were attacked by weinstein testified during the trial. closing arguments are expected tomorrow and friday. "los angeles times" reports retired nba star dwayne wade appeared on the ellen degeneres show to talk about his 12-year-old child coming out as transgender. wade said he's proud of his daughter.

he also indicated there will be no further interest rate cuts for now. meantime stocks closed mixed yesterday. the dow edged slightly lower. the nasdaq added 10 points, the s&p 500 rose five. southwest airlines is under the microscope over safety concerns following a scathing government report. the airline has flown more than 150,000 flights on 88 jets bought on the used plane market. those aircraft had unconfirmed maintenance history that put 7 million passengers at risk. southwest said that it has taken steps to address the report's findings and disagrees with the critique of its safety culture. a new lawsuit following a deadly crash involving a vehicle. an apple engineer who died in 2018 testing the model x had previously complained the suv malfunctioned along the same stretch of highway.

his daughter on a college campus has now been charged with victimizing her friends over a period of years. police say he kept control using extortion, forcing at least one woman into prostitution. errol barnett reports. >> reporter: lawrence ray moved in his tower's on campus house at sarah lawrence after leaving jail. he used verbal and physical abuse to control his young victims. that abuse escalating once they moved to new york city with him a short time later. >> so he directed his victims to obtain money for him by other means, by draining their parents' savings and worse forced labor and prostitution. >> reporter: ray is charged with nine counts including sex trafficking, extortion and money laundering. the indictment says ray demanded taped confessions from his victims for supposed crimes they
