good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. i'm anne-marie green. so we begin with a new case of the coronavirus confirmed here in the united states. officials say a second person in san diego has been diagnosed. both were evacuated from the epicenter of china's outbreak. that brings the total number of confirmed cases in the u.s. to 14. in wuhan, china there's been a surge in new infections. officials today reported more than 15,000 cases and 254 deaths. united airlines announced its extending its suspension of flights to mainland china and hong kong to the end of april. boeing is concerned outbreak could hurt deliveries of new planes fears over the coronavirus prompted officials to cancel one of the world's biggest technology trade shows in barcelona. in japan olympic organizers say the coronavirus will not impact the upcoming 2020 summer games. naomi ruchim is in new york. what do we know about this second case that's been confirmed in san diego?

>> reporter: this is the latest case found in a person on board a flight last week from wuhan, china to a military base in southern california. that patient was placed in isolation at a hospital in san diego and health officials do not believe the two cases in san diego are connected. still the cdc is warning that the disease could gain a foot hold here in the u.s. >> this outbreak could still go in any direction. >> reporter: the world health organization is warning the coronavirus outbreak may be far from over. >> it's way too early to try to predict the beginning, the middle or the end of this epidemic right now. >> reporter: tens of thousands of people around the globe have been diagnosed with the disease, icluding 14 in the u.s. fears over the virus have slowed business at chinatown restaurants around the country but owners say there's nothing to worry about. >> it's more about education.

to be educated about what the virus is. >> reporter: americans traveling around asia are struggling to find flights home. so, you are trying to get home. when the outbreak happened we didn't figure our flight would get cancelled. >> reporter: those who do might end up in quarantine like thisi woman. she shared an emotional reunion with her family after spending two weeks at a military base. >> i'm happy to be reunited. >> reporter: in japan hundreds remain quarantined on the cruise ship diamond princess. >> it's getting harder. we're now in the second week. it seems an eternity. >> reporter: more than 200 people on boar have tested positive for the coronavirus. some elderly passengers may be allowed off tomorrow. and 3,500 people are on board that ship. again we're learning some passengers may be able to leave and complete their quarantine on land. worldwide the number of confirmed cases of the

coronavirus now tops 60,000 as disease specialists gather in geneva to find a way to stop the spread. naomi ruchim here in new york. thank you. so, new video has surfaced in the case of a missing south carolina girl. the 6-year-old was last spotted on monday. the fbi has joined police officers in the search. janet shamlian reports. >> reporter: this is 6-year-old faye swetlik getting off her school bus monday afternoon. a little more than an hour later she was gone. last seen playing in the front yard of her south carolina home. police released the images in hopes of getting more tips and home security video. >> why can't it be an amber alert? >> at this point we have not ruled out faye went in the woods playing, gotten lost and has not found her way back home yet. >> reporter: the little girl nowhere to be found. the search is expanding, more

than 300 officers from 20 law enforcement agencies are now going door-to-door beyond her neighborhood. and the fbi has joined the investigation. there is no evidence the 3'10", first grader was abducted from the home where she lives with her mother and grandmother. >> i want my baby. got to find her. >> just really hard. >> reporter: lindsay is faye's friend. >> how is the community reacting? >> sick. just worried sick. >> reporter: police have taken the extraordinary step of blocking off the entire subdivision where faye disappeared from. only residents can come and go. janet shamlian cbs news. attorney general william barr is set to testify before the house judiciary committee next month. the news comes after the justice department overruled prosecutors in the sentencing of roger

stone. the president's long time friend was facing up to nine years in prison after being committed by special prosecutors last november. mr. trump congratulated mr. barr for taking charge of stone's sentencing. >> reporter: president trump continues to publicly comment on the case of his long time ally. >> roger stone was treated horribly. >> reporter: the president congratulated attorney general william barr for intervening and overruling the initial seven to nine year sentence recommendation from his department's own prosecutors in favor of a lighter sentence. the justice department insists there was no coordination with the white house. >> i didn't speak to him, by the way, just so you understand. they saw the horribleness of a nine year sentence. >> reporter: the four career prosecutors abruptly w h withdrew from the case on tuesday. >> what am i doing becoming the

president's henchman. >> reporter: ultimately the sentence is up to the judge in this case who denied a request by stone's attorneys for a new trial. on twitter the president took a swipe at the judge who also sentenced paul manafort, prompting a rare rebuke from the president's allyly lindsey grah. >> i don't think the president should have tweeted about an ongoing case. >> reporter: graham says he has confidence in the doj's revised sentencing recommendation. the house judiciary committee wants to hear from william barr directly. he's scheduled to testify at the end of march. the democratic presidential contenders are looking ahead to south carolina and nevada. it comes after bernie sanders narrowly beat pete buttigieg in the new hampshire primary. yesterday former massachusetts governor deval patrick ended his presidential campaign. he was the last remaining african-american candidate in the democratic field. meanwhile there's new fallout in

the iowa caucus vote tallying controversy. the head of iowa's democratic party troy price resigned. the former new york city mayor michael bloomberg is campaigning in tennessee where early voting is under way ahead of super tuesday. he's in damage control after a controversial comment he made in 2015 resurfaced. nicole kill onkillkillion reports. >> reporter: campaigning in tennessee michael bloomberg expressed regret about comments in 2015 about new york city's stop-and-frisk policy. >> why did you say what you said in that 2015 speech? >> i don't think those words reflect how i led the most diverse city in the nation and i apologized for the practice and the pain that it caused. >> reporter: the former new york

mayor said he's not worried his comments could hurt him with voters of color. bloomberg rolled out endorsements from three members of the black caucus. >> we'll do very well in the african-american community. >> reporter: bloomberg has been digging into former vice president joe biden's supporters among african-american voters which has fall into 27% since december. biden is now trying to shore up those numbers in south carolina and beyond. >> you can't be the democratic nominee, you can't win a general election as a democrat unless you have overwhelming support from black and brown voters. >> reporter: some voters of color who attended bloomberg's event here told me they were bothered by his past comments while others felt they heard worse from president trump and wants someone who can beat him. two baltimore police officers are recovering after being wounded in a shootout. the officers went to an apartment complex yesterday to serve an arrest warrant for attempted murder to a former state corrections official.

money laundering and forced labor. he's accused of abusing his daughter's room mates. prosecutors accuse ray of forcing at least one woman into prostitution and making her tape sex videos to use as leverage against her. "the columbus dispatch" report two ohio state football players were dismissed from the team after being charged with rape and kidnapping. amir riep and jahsen wint are scheduled to be arraigned today. the criminal complaint alleges a 19-year-old woman was afghanistan consensual sex with amir riep last week when she stopped and didn't want to continue. jahsen wint entered the room and the two men raped her. their attorneys say they are innocent. >> the charges are false. wrongly accused. he shouldn't be in jail. >> police say riep told the woman she needed to say sex was consensual on video.

let's get the latest read on consumer prices ahead of the market open. on wall street yesterday stocks rallied to new records across the board. the dow soared 275 points. the nasdaq was up 87. the s&p 500 jumped 21. congress has launched an investigation into car booster seat maker evenflo for its product marketing and testing practices. a recent pro publica investigation revealed side testing for the booster seat seeing a dummy being violently tossed around. right now there are no federal regulations that outline testing procedures for side impacts. tesla is recalling 15,000 model x suvs.

nasa is looking for its next astronaut. the space agency says people interested in flying to the international space station and possibly even the moon should apply. applications can be submitted starting march 2nd through march 31st. requirements include a masters degree in a s.t.e.m. field and jet aircraft experience. 48 astronauts will be selected. nasa says it hopes to send the first human to mars in the mid-2030s. the insurance institute for highway safety is out with its new list of the safest vehicles. we show you the carmakers that got top scores. >> reporter: to earn top safety pick, vehicles must perform well in six different crash tests. the insurance institute for highway safety also measures roof strength and evaluates whether headlights provide good vision. this year 64 vehicles earned a top safety pick award.
