good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. i'm anne-marie green. there will be a new face on stage tonight as the democratic candidates for president debate in las vegas. former new york city mayor mike bloomberg qualified and will take part in his first presidential debate. he'll go head to head with five other candidates, pete buttigieg, bernie sanders and elizabeth warren as well as amy klobuchar along with former vice president joe biden. bloomberg's on stage debut shows a poll rising to second place nationally behind sanders. laura podesta is here. no doubt his rivals will be going after him. >> reporter: a lot of the debate will be focused on money. bernie sanders, elizabeth warren have accused bloombergwho is a multi-billionaire of buying himself a place in this race. but also that will be brought up

is bloomberg's stop-and-frisk program which racially profiled black and brown men in new york city while he was mayor. a new face will join the democratic presidential contenders tonight in las vegas. mike bloomberg will make his first appearance at a debate. he qualified after a new national poll showed him in second place trailing only vermont senator bernie sanders. >> i think it's really important that someone not just be out there on the tv ads, because i'm not going to be able to compete with that, with the billions he has. >> reporter: bloomberg adopted an unconventional strategy in pursuit of the white house. he's skipping early voting states like iowa and new hampshire in order to focus on the delegate rich super tuesday contests. bloomberg's campaign is self-funded.

he has spent more than $400 million on tv, radio and online ads and willing to shell out as much as a billion to defeat president trump. >> anybody here worth $60 billion, you canan run for president. and you can buy the air waves. my friends that is called oligarchy, not democracy. >> reporter: in a tweet elizabeth warren said she's looking forward to tonight's debate which she called quote a live demonstration of how we take on an egomaniac billionaire. bloomberg does not have the practice the other candidates do and on the campaign trail he's known to use a teleprompter and rarely takes questions directly from voters. >> we will all be watching. laura podesta here in new york. thank you. so president trump is also in nevada as is his democratic challengers square off.

mr. trump arrived in las vegas overnight after a quick trip to california earlier in the day for a fundraiser. he's set to head to arizona today for a campaign rally before headlining another one in las vegas. the his west coast trip comes after he granted clemency to almost a dozen felons many high-profile including former illinois governor rob blagojevich. skyler henry reports from washington. >> reporter: former illinois governor rob blagojevich headed home from prison following a commutation from president trump. he said he had no idea this was coming. >> how did you hear about this today? >> on the news. >> you heard it on the news? >> other inmates came and told me. >> reporter: blagojevich began serving a 14 year sentence at this colorado prison in 2012 for trying to sell barack obama's

senate seat to the highest bidder. he crossed paths with president trump before. he was on "celebrity apprentice". the president president pardoned bernard kerik former commissioner of ththe nypd and frequent mar-a-lago guest who served prison time for tax fraud as well as investment banker michael milken known as the junk bond king of the 1980s. and eddie debartolo. tuesday president trump also revealed how he makes his clemency decisions. >> i rely on recommendations of people that know them. >> reporter: in the case of bernie kerik that included the encouragement of rudy giuliani and that of former navy s.e.a.l. eddie gallagher whose demotion

was overturned by the president last year following charges of war crimes. in all the president issued four commutations and seven pardons. skyler henry, cbs news, washington. a new case of the coronavirus has surfaced in california. the patient is hospitalized in napa where a second case is now under investigation. the patients were among those eacuated from the quarantined cruise ship in japan. today hundreds of passengers were finally able to disembark. about 500 passengers are expected to leave today. 88 new cases of the coronavirus surfaced on the ship, bringing the total number to 542 confirmed cases. 14 american passengers tested positive after they were evacuated and flown to military bases in california and texas. there are now at least 29 confirmed cases in the u.s. in an earlier group an american man was taken to a hospital in omaha when he developed a fever after evacuating the ship. he has just been diagnosed with the coronavirus. his wife said he's getting good care.

>> the care where we are is supposed to be top in the country, so i'm not in fear at all that he won't have a whole recovery. >> new cases of the coronavirus in china appear to be slowing. health officials say the confirmed number of new cases stands at more than 1700. more than 2,000 people in the country have died from it. worldwide the coronavirus has infected more than 75,000 people. investigators have announced autopsy results for a 6-year-old girl who disappeared in south carolina. the body of faye swetlik was found. authorities concluded her death was a homicide by asphyxiation. it took place hours after she was abducted by her neighbor. investigators also revealed new evidence found in a trash can that led them to the girl's

suspected killer. >> one was a child's polka dot boot. second was a soup ladle that had freshly dug dirt in it. >> the suspect, 30-year-old coty scott's body was found in his home shortly after faye swetlik's body was discovered. he had a self-inflicted wound to his neck. dna helped investigators connect the dots. a washington state woman is behind bars this morning after make her first court appearance. she's charged in a bizarre kidnapping plot to steal a 3-week-old baby. she used a tainted cupcake. danya bacchus has more. >> reporter: this washington state woman says she now lives in contact fear after a woman posing as a baby photographer befriended her and then allegedly poisoned her. it was part of a plot to steal her newborn. >> since this happened i'm terrified to be at my house. i don't go anywhere. i don't like to be at home. i'm not sleeping or eating.

i carry a machete, a knife and pepper spray in my house and car. i sleep with a knife under my pillow. >> reporter: the mother invited juliette parker and her daughter to her home after they offered to take baby photos. on the third visit, parker gave her some wine and a cupcake. >> as i ate one my lips and face started to feel numb. my legs and arms started to go numb. >> reporter: the victim told officers she became woozy from that cupcake but ordered parker out and called 911. she told detectives she saw parker wipe her fingerprints from objects inside the home and take selfies with the baby. then parker stole the house keys. investigators say parker was determined to take alicia's child. >> she wanted a girl and 5 weeks and under so she could raise it herself. >> reporter: parker appeared in court. the judge increased her bail to $150,000. her daughter remains in juvenile detention. but that's little peace of mind for alicia.

york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> reporter: investors will get a look on economic data on the housing market and the price index. stocks closed mixed yesterday. the dow dropped 165 point, the nasdaq added a point while the s&p 500 lost nine. amazon's home security system ring is tightening its privacy and security settings following a series of camera hacks. customers will have to use a second layer of verification known as two layer of verification. users will receive one time code through email or text to access cameras and unlock doors. ring will give customers the ability to opt-out of sharing information. more problems for boeing. the company found debris left by mechanics in the fuel tanks of undelivered 737 max aircraft. boeing has ordered inspections of all undelivered max jets. also recommending inspections for hundreds of max planes that

have already been delivered. the faa is stepping up its oversight of initial inspection reports. keep in mind the faa grounded the max fleet last year after two deadly crashes overseas. groupon has announced to stop selling merchandise by the end of the year. groupon currently connects consumers with local merchants by offering discounts on various goods, services and activities. it plans to focus on discounted experiences such as wine tastings, massages and dance lessons. groupon is not well positioned to succeed in a saturated retail market. spacex aims to launch four tourists into orbit by the end of next year. the company has partnered with space adventures for the all tourist mission. paying customers will skip international space station and will orbit 850 miles above the north. ticket prices are expected to be

workers in italy have finished a six year restoration project in the destroyed city of pompeii. visitors can wander through the streets and see homes destroyed years ago. one of the buildings opened is the house of lovers considered one of the jewels of the city. it was closed to visitors 40 years ago after being severely damaged in an earthquake. only dwelling in pompeii that has a completely preserved upper floor. today marks 75 years since start of the battle of iwo jima. it took u.s. marines 36 days to take the island. nearly 7,000 americans and 20,000 japanese soldiers died before the iconic moment when the american flag was raised on mt. suribachi. the victory marked a key turning point in world war ii.
