good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. mike bloomberg made his first appearance at a democratic presidential debate last night in las vegas and he quickly came under attack. he faced jabs or rather faced jabs over his wealth and record on race as new york city's mayor. elizabeth warren called out bloomberg over alleged incidents of sexual harassment at his company including the use of nondisclosure agreements. >> we have very few none disclosure agreements. >> how many is that? >> let me finish. >> how many is that? >> none of them excuse me of doing anything other than they didn't like the joke i told. >> there were also fireworks between pete buttigieg and senator bernie sanders. the pair sparred over union employees. >> you're the one who is at war with the culinary union right here in las vegas. >> we got more support than you ever dreamed of.

>> laura podesta is in new york. laura, what other critical issues did the candidates clash over? >> reporter: one of the biggest issues they argued over is who is best equipped to take on president trump in november. versus who is weakening the party as whole and lessening the chances of democrats winning back the white house. one thing is for sure, this debate set the tone that the candidates are prepared to really fight for this nomination. mike bloomberg surging poll numbers earned him a place on the debate stage as well as a target on his back. >> i would like to talk about who we're running against, a billionaire who calls women fat broads and horse faced lesbians. no, i'm not talking about donald trump i'm talking about mayor bloomberg. >> reporter: elizabeth warren led the way as the candidates took aim at the former new york city mayor's wealth and record on race and gender. >> the fact of the matter is he

has not managed his city very well when he was there. >> mr. bloomberg had policies in new york city of stop-and-frisk which went after african-american and latino people in an outrageous way. >> reporter: after saying he regrets some of his decisions, bloomberg pushed back. >> i can't imagine a better way to get donald trump re-elected than listening to this conversation. that's ridiculous. we're not going to throw out capitalism. we tried that. other countries tried that. it was called communism and it didn't work. >> reporter: buttigieg went after bloomberg and sanders. >> we shouldn't have to choose between one candidate who wants t burn this party down and another who wants to buy this party out. >> reporter: bloomberg will be back on the debate stage in south carolina next week. president trump took note of the democrats rancor towards bloomberg.

he told the crowd at a campaign rally in phoenix last night i hear he's getting pounded tonight. >> laura podesta in new york. thank you so much. so, cbs news will co-host the next democratic presidential debate in charleston, south carolina. norah o'donnell and gayle king will moderate. they will be joined by margaret brennan and major garrett. and bill whitaker of "60 minutes" in the questioning. the congressional black caucus institute is co-hosting. you can see that debate tuesday february 25th at 8:00 eastern, 5:00 pacific right here on cbs. president trump has named richard granell as the acting director of national intelligence. the president made the announcement on twitter yesterday. he has been a vocal supporter of mr. trump. he doesn't have much experience working in intelligence, which democrats quickly criticized. he's a long time republican political operative and former aide to senator mitt romney. he will replace joseph mcguire the current acting dni.

a gunman suspected of killing nine people and. injuring several others in germany was found dead. the suspect targeted two hookah loungs and authorities found him dead inside his home and found the body of his 72 mother there. officials say he may have been motivated by far-right belief. the japanese government says two passengers both in their 80s from a quarantined cruise ship in japan have died from the coronavirus. this as the remaining passengers or as the remaining passengers continue to disembark. more than 620 cases of the virus have been linked to the ship. the rates of infection appear to be dropping in china, though. the source of the outbreak. china recorded 394 new cases, the lowest daily number in weeks.

there are now more than 75,000 cases of the coronavirus worldwide, more than 2100 people have died. and two women are dead after a car went off a ferry near miami beach. the ferry takes people and cars back and forth from the exclusive fisher island. there was a massive rescue effort after the ferry's crew called for help. the women were found submerged in a blue mercedes-benz. a 65-year-old woman was behind the wheel. a 75-year-old woman from new york was in the passenger seat. not known how the car wound up in the water. this morning the suspected ring leader of a massive alleged prison escape plot in tennessee is behind bars. police are continuing to search for loaded guns that may have been planted in a still under construction detention center. manuel bojorquez has the details. >> reporter: authorities say alex friedman's scheme involved dressing as a trucks worker and stealing keys to hide guns and

ammunition at an under construction downtown detention center for a massive escape plan. >> it was discovered mr. friedman over many months had developed and implemented extremely deliberate and in my opinion, evil plan. what disturbs me the most, is not that this was about an escape. it was also about loss of life. >> private prisons couldn't exist without collusion of government agencies that give them permission to exist. >> reporter: friedman is described as a self-proclaimed criminal justice advocate. he has been featured in multiple news reports and documentaries. he testified on capitol hill. his attorney said friedman is presumed innocent but did not address the allegations. police are looking for three other men they believe may have helped friedman. >> i'm not confident we found everything we need. we're not going to stop here until we're comfortable. >> reporter: they have to change 2,000 locks before the detention center can open.

manuel bojorquez, cbs news. jury deliberations are expected to continue in harvey weinstein's rape and sexual assault trial. yesterday jurors asked to review parts of mimi's testimony the former production assistant who said weinstein sexually assaulted her in his new york city apartment in 2006. the jury also wanted to see emails harvey weinstein wrote about her and asked for a detailed explanation involving the two charges involving her allegations. weinstein said he's not guilty and insists any sexual encounters were consensual. a mexican citizen has been charged with collecting information on u.s. employees for russia. both he and his wife were arrested as they were boarding a flight from florida sunday night. >> reporter: from all occasions hector alejandro cabrera fuentes is an accomplished mexican professor living in singapore. but u.s. investigators believe

he's a spy for the russian government operating in south florida. authorities say that on orders from the kremli, hector alejandro cabrera fuentes and his spent valentine's day gathering intelligence on an fbi informant watching russian spy activity in south florida. the couple drove a rental car in miami and entered by tailgating another vehicle. once inside they took a photograph of the government license plate. federal agents found the photos on their phones as they boarded a flight to mexico city. hector alejandro cabrera fuentes was recruited by a russian agent in moscow where he has a second family. the agent implied that he would help hector alejandro cabrera fuentes family if he agreed to help them. this is certainly the way putin likes to operate. >> the fbi has to be scrambling to figure out how did russia learn this informant was working against their interests?

two married off duty police officers were on a date night in the restaurant at the same time. they chased him outside and arrested him. there's an end in sight for prince harry and meghan markle's royal duties and a third teenager is arrested in the murder of a new york city college student. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the "new york times" reports a third teenager has been arested in the majors murder. a 14-year-old was charged with second-degree murder and robbery. it comes two months after the 18-year-old college freshman was stabbed to death in a new york city park. his friend another 14-year-old was arrested on the same charges over the weekend. both pleaded not guilty at an arraignment yesterday. they will be tried as adults, though. a 13-year-old boy was also charged in december as a juvenile. the bbc reports prince harry and meghan markle's royal duties will end on march 31st. after that they will be known as duke and duchess of sussex. buckingham palace signed off on

forecast in some cities around the country. on the "cbs money watch" a possible buyer for victoria secret and the irs is knocking on the doors of some high income taxpayers. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> reporter: good morning. stocks closed at record highs yesterday for two of the major averages as the federal reserve indicated it would not change interest rates in the foreseeable future. the dow rallied 115 points, the nasdaq was up 84, s&p 500 added 15 points. l brands is nearing a deal to sell control of victoria secret too private equity form. it is valued at $1.1 billion. sycamore partners is going to buy 55% of victoria secret and take the struggling business

private. l brands chairman and ceo is expected to step down. the irs is stepping up efforts to visit high income taxpayers who previously failed to file their tax returns on time. face-to-face visits will focus on people who earn more than $100,000 and did not file a return in 2018 or previous years. the irs has hired additional enforcement personnel for the visits. the agency says the visits are aimed at informing taxpayers their obligations and bringing them into compliance. burger king launched a new ad campaign featuring a moldy burger. it posted a time lapse of a decomposing burger. it starts as normal. it's meant to draw attention to burger king's moves away from preservatives and artificial flavors. part of a growing trend in the fast food industry to use more natural ingredients. so, i don't know if it's going to make me want to buy a whopper. it's turning me off of food entirely right now. >> i know.

sight for nascar fans. driver ryan newman walked out of the hospital yesterday with his two daughters. it came two days after his horrific crash at the daytona 500. newman was initially listed in serious condition after he was bumped by a teammate on the final lap sending hill tumbling and skidding down track. nascar's safety procedures have been credited with saving his life. a woman in london played her violin for an unusual audience, a team of brain surgeons who were operating on her. a warning now. some of the video is a little hard to watch but it's interesting. ♪ last month the 53-year-old was having a tumor removed from an area of her brain which affects her left hand motor skills. playing the violin helped doctors make sure they weren't doing any damage. and the operation was a success. coming up on "cbs this morning" in our series a more
