they say russia is again meddling in the presidential election. in a top secret briefing last week house members were told no doubt russia is interfering in the 2020 campaign. a source who attended the meeting confirmed that the goal is to get president trump re-elected. major garrett reports from washington. >> reporter: sources tells cbs news president trump was furious when he found out about the classified briefing on russia election interference. he was not informed the house briefing would take place and according to one senior administration official blew his stack and repeatedly used an expletive. the briefing took place on february 13th. the director of national intelligence's top staffer on election security told lawmakers russia is working to help president trump get re-elected. sources say there was intense bipartisan push back on her assertions and questions about the strength of the evidence.

the intelligence community concluded in 2016 russia meddled in the election and it's been on guard about renewed efforts this year. >> we certainly are seeing and have never stopped seeing really since 2016 efforts to engage in foreign influence by the russians. >> reporter: there are reports the president hearing this assessment berated his current director of national intelligence. on wednesday the president announced he was naming richard grenell as the new acting director of that agency and it's unclear if that move is related to the president's anger over this assessment. major garrett, cbs news, washington. the president's longtime friend roger stone has been sentenced to more than three years in prison. stone is now the seventh associate to president trump to face time behind bars following the investigation into russia meddling in the 2016 election.

the president has already hinted that he may pardon stone. skyler henry has the latest from washington. >> reporter: roger stone stepped out of the courthouse thursday all smiles. but inside the political operative and longtime advisor to president trump had no reaction as the judge sentenced him to 40 months behind bars. over the two and a half hour sentencing jackson scolded stone for covering up for the president. and told him the truth still matters. stone was convicted by a jury in november on seven felony charges of obstruction, lying to congress and witness tampering stemming from robert mueller's investigation into 2016 election interference. judge jackson is holding off executing on stone's sentence while she considers his motion for a new trial. if president trump uses his pardon power it's unclear that won't be necessary. the president told an audience

of ex-convicts in colorado they would under better than anyone that roger stone deserves a second chance. >> i'm following this very closely and i want to see it play out to its fullest because roger is a very good chance of exoneration, in my opinion. >> reporter: 30 months is far less than seven to nine years originally recommended by the justice department. attorney general william barr stepped in, ordering a less harsh sentence shortly after president trump tweeted his dissatisfaction with the sentence recommendation. all of the prosecutors on the case then quit. barr said in an interview that the president's tweets make it impossible for him to do his job. skyler henry, cbs news, washington. mike bloomberg is fighting back after a rough showing at his first democratic presidential debate. his rivals took turns slamming the former new york city mayor on everything from race to sexual harassment at his company. most hopefuls are looking forward to tomorrow's caucus. another debate in south carolina next week where bloomberg will

face off again with his rivals again. laura podesta is here in new york. how critical is it for bloomberg to come out stronger in this next upcoming debate? >> reporter: very critical if he wants to emerge as the front-runner for the moderates then he needs to show on stage alongside other strong moderate candidates like buttigieg, joe biden and amy klobuchar he has the best chance to beat trump in november. mike bloomberg said he's not going anywhere. he's moving on after his rough debate debut. on wednesday in las vegas the other candidates took turns bashing bloomberg's wealth, politics and record on race and gender. >> the real winner in the debate last night was donald trump. because i worry that we may very well be on the way to nominating somebody who cannot win in november. >> reporter: bloomberg who isn't on the ballot for tomorrow's

caucus is looking ahead. pr ser tuesdays ampaigned in ng who think that the rules don't apply to them. >> reporter: massachusetts senator elizabeth warren remained on the offensive after leading the debate attack on bloomberg. >> of all the people standing on that stage he is the riskiest one for the democrats. >> reporter: at a rally in colorado last night president trump mocked bloomberg's performance. >> i became president because of the debates, because unlike mini mike i can answer questions. >> reporter: new polls from some key swing states put the six leading democrats ahead of the president in michigan and pennsylvania, but they all trail the president in the potentially decisive state of wisconsin. bloomberg clearly believes the person to beat for the

hours. there are now more than 2,200 deaths. world health organization announced two new drug therapy trials to combat the coronavirus are set to begin in china. early results may be available within three weeks. chaos erupted in ukraine as residents clash with police over the country's efforts to quarantine more than 70 people evacuated from china. here at home 14 people in california who either have the virus or have symptoms are in area hospitals. four people are being treated in washington state. the mother of two missing idaho children has been arrested in hawaii. police say lori vallow was arrested yesterday. joshua vallow and tylee ryan have been missing since september.

lori vallow and her new husband lied about the children's whereabouts. tylee ryan's aunt reacted to the news of vallow's arrest. >> we still potentially have a long road ahead of us. it felt like the first jolt of hope for me that, you know, we are hopefully one step closer to finding tylee ryan and j.j. vallow was being held on $5 million bail and awaiting extradition back to idaho. jury deliberations are expected to resume today in the rape and sexual assault trial of harvey weinstein. yesterday the jury requested to hear a reading of more of actress annabelle sciorra's earlier testimony. she previously testified she was raped by weinstein in her new york city apartment in the 1990s. the jury has already looked at emails that weinstein sent regarding annabelle sciorra.

weinstein has denied all allegations of nonconsensual sex. a fiery crash became the scene of a daring rescue in indiana. good samaritans rushed into danger yesterday to save a truck driver's life. adriana diaz reports. >> reporter: as flames and black smoke engulfed the interstate, fire crews raced to the scene. the tanker carrying an estimated 4,000 gallons of jet fuel overturned when the driver crossed the overpass and hit the guardrail forcing the tanker to flip over, split open and explode. >> the tanker looks like it's ruptured. >> once that tanker opened up and caught fire the fuel traveled back on both sides of the bridge. >> reporter: three good samaritans ran toward the wall of fire and rescued the driver before the explosion. alive but in critical condition with serious burns.

the "jackson clarion ledger" say there's a block banning most abortions as early as six weeks. yesterday's decision said the law is unconstitutional because it would ban abortion before the point of viability when a fetus can survive outside the womb. a mississippi district court judge first blocked the law from taking effect in 2019. it came after the sole abortion clinic sued mississippi over what would have been one of the strictest abortion laws in the nation. our affiliate in north carolina reports after 21 years detectives closed the baby michael case. the baby was found in a trash bag on the side of a north carolina road in 1999 with the umbilical cord attached. a funeral was held at the time. unidentified instant -- instant was dubbed michael. 21 years later dna from the baby led detectwborn' mother, 54-year-old deborah
