strike continuing a grandson at uc santa cruz. now their jobs may be in jeopardy. a search resumes for a couple missing for an entire week. now, along the marin county shoreline the search continues. hopes of finding them are fading. air-quality test are separate today. the high school following the discovery of toxic groundwater hundreds of students may have to go elsewhere to attend class. it just about to call -- a little bit of a chilly start for me at least this morning. i'm imagining that's thanks to the clear skies. >> technically the afternoon will be cooler today. some places like 10 degrees. the closer you are to the opening of the bay the colder. look at the radar. it is raining in northern

california. not in the bay area but technically there is rain in the central valley which is nice to see considering how uneventful and quiet the entire month has been so far. not going to show you any of the rain heading to the bay area. we can watch the futurecast as it falls apart. since it's not going to in tos lkabout the cooler numbers. it is 49 in concord. 38 in santa rosa, that is colder. clear skies allow the temperature to drop down. there is a big spread across the bay area from 38 in santa rosa to the 57 in oakland. typical and if we take a look at the headlines on what to expect, it might be chilly to start the morning and will actually be a sunny and warm weekend in general. today will be cooler than yesterday but it is still sunny and warm for this time of year. we will be nearing 80s for inland locations by the middle of this week. if you like sunny and warm there is a lot more of that coming because not only will be be near 80 there is also no

rain in sight. i will be back with more on this in a few minutes. the deadline passed more than six hours ago and there is no indication whether striking teaching assistants will be fired. the students have been on strike for almost 2 weeks calling for a cost-of-living pay increase. they have been withholding the grades of undergraduate students and last night they voted to rest their jobs and continue the strike past the deadline. morn out from kpix 5's maria medina. >> we voted at in the room our hands went up. to continue the strike. >> reporter: with their drives and livelihood at risk graduate students decided to continue their stance against the university. >> the threat of mass firing was a monstrous move. i think we are not surprised it comes from them. >> reporter: the president announced a press release that she extended an invitation to the graduate and professional counsel.

to discuss several issues including cost-of-living and housing. >> as the unit chair she has not reached out to me as far as i know. >> is a big risk for them to fire us. >> reporter: but the threat of losing their jobs means more than just the financial loss. for international students, it means losing the entire opportunity to be here. >> we can't pay tuition, we put our visas in jeopardy >> reporter: it's clear they do not clear about graduate students when they make threats like that, but they say they will continue to withhold undergrad grades and strike. until the university gives them an offer they say it's only fair. and one of the most expensive areas in the country. >> students have been very clear that the end of the strike comes when there is a guarantee of no discipline for participation. >> reporter: the student say the strike will also and when they get an additional $1400 a month for the cost-of-living raise and a promise that under

onuiti will not increase. officials released a statement last night saying the deadline has not changed and those who do not turn in with health grades will not be eligible for a spring teaching appointment. also future employment as an academic student employee will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. today marks a week since the palo alto couple went missing in marin. the searchers will be out again looking this morning. the focus will be on recovery from the waters off the beach. that is researchers say several cadaver dogs have indicated alerts. the couple has been thought to end up there. >> even though we don't have a positive confirmation in the form of recovery, we have

we must examine these findings and better understand why they exist. oakland city leaders are focused on moving forward after the ousting of police chief anne kirkpatrick. kpix 5's andrea nakano on the question surrounding the firing and the challenge of finding new leadership. >> reporter: since 2013, the city of oakland has gone through seven different police chiefs. now the search is on for the next man or woman in charge. this as some are wondering whether letting go of the cheap -- was a good move. she got her walking papers after three years on the job. >> i knew there were some concerns among a few commissioners about certain things not getting done on time or as quickly as we would've liked her in the right way, that i did not realize they were risen to the level of dissatisfaction that we need a new chief. >> reporter: the city council memb cate camilla police commission that fired

the chief. he says he was surprised by the firing but supports the decision by the commission and the mayor. the co-author of the measure councilman noel gallo is having trouble explaining why taxpayer dollars will go towards paying a police chief not to work. kirkpatrick will receive when your salary as severance. >> the fact that it will cost me hundreds of thousands of dollars to be able to do it when the chief is not here and they will hire somebody else on top of that. >> reporter: the head of the commission says it wasn't just one thing that led to the firing of kirkpatrick. they were concerned about her holding out information from the oversight authority and her failure to increase compliance with court ordered reforms. councilman kalb says this is opportunity find the chief that can address the variety of issues oakland basis. >> if we do that we will be

able to do the kind of policing that our public wants us to do and they were present and respond to 911 calls and investigate serious crimes and to better be able to comply with the federal oversight requirements that are absolutely necessary for us to comply with because they make a lot of sense. >> reporter: the firing sits atop president and the next chief now knows the power the community lead police commission has over at their job security. in oakland, andrea nakano, kpix 5. air quality testing will be discussed today after toxic groundwater shutdown the high school. it's unclear when the school will reopen. the 350 high school students may end up having to hold classes at nearby elementary and middle schools. the concert is over the cancer- causing capital local and whether it is vaporizing in the classroom. two recent alums of the high school died of cancer. officials have not drawn a connection to the chemical

discovery and the school has had problems with unsafe levels of lead. >> at this point and advocating for a full rebuild of the school and the state needs to step up. >> i'm worried about my water. >> the water is safe to drink and says the chemical would not be able to enter the utilities pressurized distribution system. wells fargo has agreed to pay $3 billion over its fake account scandal. the settlement resolves their liabilities for the scheme that lasted more than a decade. the san francisco-based bank admitted to falsifying records harming credit ratings of customers and misusing their personal information and wrongly collecting millions in fees and interest. >> no institution is too big, too powerful, or too well-known to escape appropriate enforcement action by the justice department when it gauges an improper conduct.

a federal judge has temporarily blocked the u.s. government from sending coronavirus patients to a southern california city. costa mesa filed a request yesterday to halt the plan to house 30 to 50 patients at estate on center. it would involve transferring patients from travis air force base here to costa mesa. the mayor says the decision was made without consulting city officials. no information about how surrounding neighborhoods will be protected. the judge granted a temporary injunction and set a hearing on monday to evaluate the request. coronavirus fears are taking a toll on convention business. as kpix 5's betty yu's reports several have pulled out of a tech conference this weekend. the signs arthe chairs are out, the annual

timeline will remain unclear. rtys might call for bus only lanes on the oakland approaches to the bay bridge where bus traffic is the heaviest. it's kind of fun to be able to take a look at hi-def doppler and see rain. technically you can say it's raining in northern california. the only issue is it will not get into the bay area. hi-def doppler shows there's plenty of green on the central valley, just like so close you can almost reach over and touch it but it will not adhere. it will sit there and fall apart. in fact i will switch this from what life hi-def doppler has to say and put it into futurecast and the showers that are over there pretty much fall apart over the next few hours. just our lot in life this winter. that was a storm that had really bad aim and came down off the coast and will not do much for us. in fact we've got some clouds out there this morning but for

the most part there are a lot of reporting stations say it is clear. concord, livermore, you have clear skies and so does santa rosa. 56 in san jose. if we take a look ahead to what daytime highs will be from this, looking to the afternoon, this gets us into the mid-60s today for in-line spots. and we will top out in the upper 50s for many locations in and around the bay. berkeley 58, san rafael 56. the take away, some of these are as much is 10 degrees cooler than yesterday. the ones that are 10 degrees cooler, those are the ones that are right near the opening to the bay. we will get more of it onshore flow today so we will feel this if you get the influence from an onshore search coming in through the bay. many locations and i will not. san jose will be the same temperature today as yesterday but oakland will be close to 10 degrees cooler today. so, some of us get a noticeable

drop. that is an example of how microclimates can affect the area. north bay has temperatures coming in to the low 70s. that covers the temperatures. we've already discussed the fact that we are not getting rain today. that will make it after we finish today 25 days but for right now officially the tally is a 24. the last day of rain was january 28. the 24 days in a row with no rain in the middle of winter and just for comparison we have done that before. it has been worse than this but really some of those top years, they go back to the drought. december, 2014 to february 2015, we went 43 days. that doesn't say much and this is still a concerning stretch. we are on track to go the entire month of february with no rain and we have only done that one time before. for san francisco's official reporting station you have to go back to the 1800s.

the cameras from the top of the sales force show was we had a mixed bag for clouds. in the south bay, east bay or in the heart of the bait you are waking up to clouds. that is what it looks like over the tri-valley this morning. waking up to clouds but if you're in the north bay you have clear skies and that has allowed temperatures to drop quite a bit. you can see some of the local trying to get in to the golden gate. that is a sign of a subtle onshore floor that will slow cool us down. santa rosa sticks out like a sore thumb right now. 38 degrees for the sheltered valleys in the north bay. everybody else is in the 50s. mid-50s in some places which is actually kind of nice but if you are in the north bay bundle up. it will be a cold start to the morning and on the flip side of that even though it is sunny and warm you may notice it is slightly cooler today. i will talk to you more about

and proceedings were delayed for almost an hour today because the court cannot find a japanese interpreter but will be on hand for his next court appearance scheduled for march 26. in san jose, kpix 5. the suspect is being held without bail at the santa clara county jail. a bay area rapper who was left paralyzed in a 2013 shooting is now accused of leaving a multimillion dollar identity theft ring. kpix 5 did his story about him in 2014 and he was being fitted for a robotic exoskeleton that would help him walk again. but authorities say in 2018 he and three alleged accomplices have en d they aldly ok out bogus loads and bought gold bars, one worth $1 million, as part of their scheme. he was in court last week and is currently free on a quarter million dollars. new developments in the

harvey weinstein trial. a note from jurors suggest that they are deadlocked on two of the most serious charges he's facing. after four days of deliberations they passed a note to the judge and said they were only able to reach a verdict on three of the five charges. the note ask if they could be deadlocked on two counts of predatory sexual assault while rendering a verdict on the other counts. but the judge said no and told them to continue deliberating. the attorney who is representing multiple accusers outside of this case weighed in. >> it is a long journey to justice, along for everyone involved and those who care about the results. but, we will see will they will reach a verdict on monday. >> the most serious charge of predatory sexual assault could land weinstein in prison for life. he has pleaded not guilty to all of the charges and says the sexual encounters were consensual. coming up, how high and work out clothes selling at
