here in new york. i'm anne-marie green. all eyes are turning to south carolina. the next battleground state in the race for the democratic presidential nomination. seven candidates hoping to unseat president trump in november are gearing up for another debate. mike bloomberg, pete buttigieg, joe biden, tom steyer, senators amy klobuchar, elizabeth warren and bernie sanders will take the stage tomorrow night in charleston. saturday's south carolina primary looks different heading in to its final week than it did last fall. biden led the field by a whopping 28 points. according to the latest cbs news poll, biden has only a slight lead with 28%. bernie sanders is right behind him at 23% followed by tom steyer in third. how critical is it for biden to do well in this upcoming debate? >> reporter: experts here in south carolina say biden has staked his entire campaign on

doing well in the state and if he doesn't do well here they say they don't see how he'll move forward. democratic presidential hopefuls are crisscrossing the country. >> we're going to win. here in texas. >> denver is ready for some big structural change. >> reporter: super tuesday is eight days away. first, voters in south carolina will cast their ballots this saturday. >> we have a huge say what will happen in south carolina. >> reporter: last of the first four states and african-american supports play a bigger role than in the previous three. >> you can control this outcome. i'll do everything in my power to earn your respect, earn your vote. >> i know when i'm asking for that vote i'm asking for something that's hard won. >> reporter: political experts say this race can give the winner a crucial boost. >> it will be a tiebreaker. a gateway to the super tuesday states. >> reporter: bernie sanders is surging after a big victory in

institute is the host and twitter is a par.ifou wt to inc question for the candidate, submit them on twitter by using the hash tag dem debate. bernie sanders is fending off new attacks after his victory in nevada over the weekend. sanders won the state by a landslide solidifying his status as the front-runner. he now has the most delegation and the most votes. laura podesta is here in new york. how did sanders win by such a wide margin? >> reporter: bernie sanders dominated among young voters and latino voters. overall he took more than 47% of the vote. former vice president joe biden landed second with around 20% followed by pete buttigieg, elizabeth warren, tom steyer and amy klobuchar. sanders victory in nevada helped the 78-year-old decratic socialist admitted it's a bit shocking that he's the front-runner.

>> the democratic party has moved to you, if anything. >> in many ways they have. arguments that seem radical are now mainstream. >> the ideas are still pretty radical. you say with pride you're making a lot of people nervous. wall street is getting nervous. insurance industry is getting nervous. drug companies are getting nervous. and democratic establishment is getting nervous. >> that's what i said. >> reporter: buttigieg is challenging the results of nevada. his campaign sent a letter to the state party claiming irregularities and asking for more date. all candidates are geaearing up for the vote in south carolina followed by super tuesday on march 3rd and 14 states will be voting. more than one-third of the total delegates are at stake on that day. >> that's a game changer. thank you so much. president trump kicked off his first official visit to india this morning as hundreds of thousands of people greeted him along his motorcade route.

at a speech, the president heaped praised on india's prime minister saying the potential for the country is incredible. ho fonew trade deal during his trip. >> reporter: india rolled out its red carpet for the president. citizens of the world's largest democracy lined the streets as he kicked off his two day tour. the throngs in ball caps emblazoned with the president's name crowded the stadium to hear from mr. trump at his biggest rally yet. >> thank you for the spectacular welcome to your magnificent country. >> reporter: the event in ahmedabad was called namaste trump. it served as india's event to the howdy mody event last fall. >> you are living proof that with hard work and devotion indians can accomplish anything,

anything at all, anything they want. >> reporter: the president is overwhelmingly popular here in india where his pro business, tough on terror image is widely admired. before he left washington sunday mr. trump faced questions about reports russia is working to get him re-elected. >> i have not been briefed at that at all. nobody tells me about it. >> reporter: on face nation his national security advisor said the same. >> we just haven't seen the intelligence. >> reporter: sources said the president became irate when he learned lawmakers were briefed on the intelligence committee assessment which includes the belief that russia is also helping bernie sanders. house members were not offered any solid evidence at the briefing. president trump concludes his tour of india here at its capital tomorrow. hopes for announcement of a trade deal have dimmed. white house has concerns about this country's controversial new citizenship law, it excludes newly arrived immigrants who are muslim.

south korea is on the highest possible health alert in its fight against the coronavirus. there's more than 760 confirmed infections and seven deaths. this as europe faces its first major outbreak. more than 150 cases of the coronavirus surfaced in italy the largest number of cases outside of asia. officials yesterday put at least ten towns on lockdown. the trump administration has barred most foreign nationals who have recently visited china from entering the u.s. china reported 409 new infections bringing the total number of cases to more than 77,000. te death toll there stands at almost 2,600. worldwide at least 79,000 people have been infected with the coronavirus. los angeles will honor kobe bryant and his daughter gianna today at a public memorial billed as a celebration of life. around 20,000 people are

the government announced the three day carnival celebration was cancelled to avoid a bloodbath. a couple is rescued after getting lost in the wilderness for a week and a call to ban all caucuses. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the "new york times" says harry reid want all caucuses to be a thing of the same. he's joining the growing call to shift all democratic presidential nominating contests from caucuses to primaries. this follows the tabulation problems in iowa and nevada. in nevada where reid is from only 60% of precincts have reported results more than 24 hours after caucuses closed. our san francisco station reports on the miracle rescue of a missing california couple in their 70s. the pair survived being lost in the wilderness for a week by drinking puddle water. they got lost on valentine's day

when they went out to look at the sunset and took a wrong turn. neighbors say that they are excited to welcome them home. >> i think their relationship was really the reason they got through this together. i think we realized these are unusual individuals and that they, if anybody was goio surviv it would be these two. >> the sheriff's office said the couple was in good spirits when they were found saturday in thick underbrush, about half a mile from their cabin. they are expected to be okay. our cbs affiliate in west palm beach reports strangers rescued a woman after she drove her car into a canal. >> got to get out. >> video shows several men surrounding the quickly sinking suv near boca raton. when they realized the driver was unconscious one of the men jumped through a window, unbuckled her seat belt and pushed her out. and together with the help of other men he pulled her to

safety. the men were driving when they saw the car in the water and jumped into the help. they stayed with the woman until paramedics took her to the hospital. "usa today" reports b. smith died after a seven year battle with alzheimer's disease. she was one of the nation's first prominent black models. went on to host the tv show "b. smith with style." she is being remembered for her style, elegance and dignity. smith also owned three restaurants, wrote several cookbooks and launched multiple home goods lines. after her diagnosis she became a voice advocating for alzheimer's research for people of color. she was 70. a 3 million pieces of luggage lost on u.s. airlines last year. ahead which airline lost the most and what they say is to blame. and what they say is to blame. ...much better. my psoriasis, clearer...

that follows friday's sell off in the u.s. as the outbreak continues to cause widespread concern. the dow tumbled 227 points, the nasdaq dropped 174, the s&p 500 lost 35. brides-to-be may find it harder to find the right dress due to the coronavirus. 80% of the world's western-style gowns are made in china according to the american bridal and prom industry association. many dress factories had to temporarily close because of the coronavirus and that could cause a dress shortage. tsa employees are no longer allowed to use the wildly popular tik tok app. in a letter to the tsa, chuck schumer said national security experts have raised concerns about the china owned app. they include how tik tok handles users data and personal information. yesterday the tsa said employees can no longer use the app to create social media posts for the agenlines lost or mishandled

our top stories this morning, all eyes are now on south carolina for the state's democratic presidential primary on saturday. seven candidates are getting set to take the stage for tomorrow night's debate in charleston here on cbs. the latest cbs news poll in south carolina shows joe biden with a 5% lead over bernie sanders. the debate comes as sanders celebrates his victory in nevada over the weekend. sanders won more than 47% of the vote followed by biden in second and pete buttigieg in third. president trump kicked off his first official visit to india this morning, speaking at a 110,000 seat cricket stadium where he received a warm welcome. the president praised india's prime minister saying the potential for the country is incredible.
