good morning, from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you, i'm anne-marie green. there are breaking developments in the coronavirus crisis. health officials in washington state say sa second person has died there. a man in his 70s died saturday in a nursing facility near seattle after the first death was reported this weekend. those are the first two coronavirus deaths in the u.s. researchers say the virus may have been circulating in the state for weeks undetected. there are at least 89 reported cases of coronavirus in the u.s. across 12 states. worldwide, there are more than 88,000 cases. the death toll is more than 3,000. so laura podesta is here in new york. what is being done here in the u.s. to prevent the virus from spreading? anne-marie, americans who are flyingk fm high 11 airp for a h screening, and then no matter if they have symptoms or not

they're being held for an incubation period. locally here in the u.s.. some state and town governments are making decisions to temporarily close schools or cancel sports events to prevent potential spread. >> reporter: the trump administration was out in full force this weekend to assure the public the risk of coronavirus is low. >> it is the confidence of all of our health experts who are widely regarded as the best in the world. >> reporter: the secretary of health and human services says additional cases are inevitable. >> it's simply a matter of math. >> reporter: over the weekend new york saw its first case asia >> ts was ivin nown connection to foreign travel. >> and so that's why we and the state of washington are deployed out there to try to trace who he had contact with had aand how h might have gotten the virus.

>> reporter: state health officials are warning people to avoid large gatherings. that didn't stop thousands who came out to support seattle's pro soccer team. >> taking all the other precautions we normally do. >> some americans are more concerned stocking up on essentials. >> i was very surprised to come here and see everything cleared out. >> reporter: in europe where the outbreak is more severe, the french government banned indoor public gatherings of more than 5,00 people. that led to the louvre museum shutting down. >> i want to go to see the mona lisa so i'm as by disappointed. >> reporter: the virus has now spread to more than 6 pharmaceui today. it was previous. but the virus a possible vaccine is expected to come up. new york senator chuck schumer is pushing to ensure medicare covers the coronavirus vaccine

whenever it becomes available, though that's not expected until next year. >> wow, laura podesta here in new york, thank you. and then there were six. six candidates remain in the race for the democratic presidential nomination after pete buttigieg formally suspended his campaign yesterday. he acknowledged he no longer had a viable path to the nomination after doing poorly in saturday's south carolina primary. he has not yet endorsed another candidate. that leaves joe bin, michael bloomberg, tulsi dwgabbard, amy klobuchar, bernie sanders and elizabeth warren. tomorrow americans head t polls in super tuesday. nikole killion has more from washington. >> hardly anybody knew my name and even fewer could pronounce it. >> reporter: one day after a distant finish in south carolina's democratic primary, pete buttigieg is ending hisig ends there comes disappointment that we won't continue. >> reporter: the 38-year-old former south bend, indiana,

cities in thee last ten weeks, and we'll see what happens. >> reporter: but on sunday, bloomberg faced an icy reception at a selma, alabama, church as some parishioners turned their backs in protest. nikole killion, cbs news, washington. >> protesters forced amy klobuchar to cancel a rally in her home state of minnesota. >> what do we want? justice! >> when do we want it? >> w! demonstrators took over a high school stage yesterday. they called for her to drop out of the race over what they say was the wrongful murder conviction of a black teenager in 2002. he was sentenced to life in prison in a case klobuchar prosecuted. an soergted press investigation uncovered new evidence and inconsistencies raising questions about how klobuchar

handled the case. and this morning, north korea reportedly carried out new missile launches. that's according to south korea's military. north korea reportedly fired two short range missiles off the east coast into the sea. earlier this year, the country had vowed to take, quote, shocking angst over what it clls beggangster like behavior from the u.s. over the weekend kim jong-un watched a military drill through binoculars and photos released by state media soldiers can be seen wearing masks, perhaps due to fears over the coronavirus. voters in israel are going to the polls this morning in the country's third national election in less than a year. the election could determine the fate of israel's longest serving prime minister, benjamin netanyahu. he also faces a criminal trial later on this month on corruption charges. the last two elections were inconclusive and neither nett netanyahu or his main political rival were able to form a coalition government. police shot an armed man

inside a catholic church on sunday. officers in santa ana were responding to a report of a man armed who appeared to be distraught and possibly suicidal. after he was shot the man stumbled out of the church where he fell and died. it's not believed he was planning a mass shooting and it's not yet known why officers opened fire. a police spokesman called the situation tragic. coming up on the morning news now, charges are dropped against a suspect who was shot by chicago police this a train station. and trouble in a newly reached peace agreement with the taliban. this is the "cbs morning news." the taliban. this is the "cbs morning news." if you have postmenopausal osteoporosis and a high risk for fracture, now might not be the best time to ask yourself, 'are my bones strong?'

rato to subdue him before opening fire. chicago mayor lori lightfoot called the video disturbing. the man was shot twice and remains hospitalized. polic say they've requested an investigation by the fbi and local prosecutors: "politico" was reporting on a potential problem with america's peace deal with the taliban. afghanistan's president was refusing to release thousands of taliban prisoners on the quick timetable announced as part of the deal. this comes ahead of power sharing talks between the afghan government and the taliban. the u.s. has set a 14-month time line for troop withdrawal is based on measures to end terrorism not the progress of those negotiations. usa today reports congressman john lewis made a surprise appearance for a civil rights remembrance in selma, alabama this weekend despite stage 4 pancreatic cancer. >> we must keep the faith.

educational progress leaving millions of kids in need of gruate from high school on time. >> reporter: karina pollen is ceo of reading partners, an organization that's working with more than 11,000 elementary students around the country. the program pairs young children with staff tutors as well as community volunteers to practice reading one on one. >> from first grade to third grade, children learn to read, and then there's that transition in the fourth grade where they read to learn, and so if they can't read by fourth grade, then they cannot learn. >> reporter: program manager ali hoyle works at this new york city school with omari and his classmates. she says benefits of reading aren't just seen in the classroom. >> resiliency, kids are not afraid to give up when they get to a hard word. they try and try again until they get it right. >> reporter: she says once the skills click, so does their confidence. >> he ran to the garage. >> reporter: the hard omari. >> what have you noticed?

24. britain says any free trade deal with the u.s. must protect the country's state funded national health service. yesterday prime minister's boris johnson's government published an outline of its negotiating objectives for the transatlantic deal. britain says trade between the two allies will increase by $2 billion if trade barriers are removed. the man who created trader joe's has died. joe coe loam opened his first grocery store in pasadena, california, in 1967. he wanted to appeal to a new generation of young grocery shoppers who wanted healthy, tasty high quality food that was also affordable. there are more than 500 trader joe's in over 40 states. he was 89. mcdonald's is naming a new food holiday dubbing today national egg mcmuffin day. they're giving away free breakfast sandwiches in honor of the cay. this 50 years after the sandwich

it didn't take a runner named molly seidel long to make history. she qualified for the olympics during the first official marathon she's ever run. nobody's ever done that before. she did after nearly four years largely away from the sport, seidel ran the race in two hours, 27 minutes and 31 seconds, and she'll compet for the u.s. this summer in tokyo. every day at least 20 people diery waiting for an organ transplant. in one town in indiana, a high school coach on that long wait list got the surprise of cordon >> please join me. >> reporter: at halftime coach chase bess thought they were raising awareness for organ transplants.

virginia, 9 bellen woodard and her classmates are getting a lesson in history. bellen is now taking her coloring projects to a new level. it started last year when she came home with some tough questions for her mom. >> do you know what people are referring to when they ask for the skin color crayon? and she said no what is it? i said it's the peach crayon. >> her mom said it was hard to hear, especially because it wasn' the first time. bellen was the only african-american girl in her fwr grade. >> i said i don't know what they're asking for, but i presumed what they were asking for because that's been all of our experience. >> reporter: tasha told her to hand over the color brown next time, but bellen had a better idea. >> i'm going to ask them which color they want? it could be a number of any colors, and so that's when the northern peach started. >> she started with her classmates giving out packets with crayola multicolored crayons or pencils she's working
