with you. i'm anne-marie green. the coronavirus continues to turn up across the country. two new states are reporting cases, maryland and colorado are confirming first infections. in seattle, microsoft says two of in california, google is giving all of its bay area staff the option to work from home. meanwhile, the national guard flew in test kits to a cruise ship anchored off the coast of san francisco. passengers will not be allowed to disembark until test results are released, which are expected earlier today. right now, there are at least 230 cases in the u.s. in 21 states. the deatath toll is at least 12. worldwide there are more than 98,000 infections. naomi ruchim is in new york. naomi, what do we know about the people on the cruise ship off california? >> after 35 passengers on the grand princess showed symptoms of the coronavirus, california's governor said it was not allowed to dock there.

on board, everything is closed. including the buffet, bars, casino and gym and passengers are being told to stay in their rooms until further notice. the grand princess and its 3500 passengers and crew are stranded f cot san fncisco.w nstant cle ship. >> reporter: over fears some of them are infected with coronavirus. >> i definitely feel like i've been kept in the dark a little bit. i'm not sure if they're trying not to scare people. >> reporter: yesterday, the california national guard flew test kits to the grand princess. a passenger who had been on the ship last month died from coronavirus. now about three dozen people are showing flu-like symptoms. test results should come later today. >> once we have results from the tests, the cdc and the state will determine the most appropriate location for the ship to berth. >> reporter: the world health organization called on countries to take the outbreak seriously. >> this is a time for pulling out all the stops.

>> reporter: president trump praised his administration's actions. >> it is going to all work out. everybody has to be calm. >> reporter: while vice president mike pence acknowledged there is still work to be done. >> we don't have enough tests today to meet what we anticipate will be the demand. >> reporter: in kirkland, washington, at least eight residents at a nursing home have died. >> i'm calling it a petri dish. >> reporter: family members are demanding accountability. >> we're continually told our loved ones are safe in this establishment. i want mike pence to come and stay with my father-in-law. >> reporter: pence called washington the front line o of e outbreak, and pledged the administration's full support. there are growing concerns about the global economy as the outbreak persists worldwide. the dow plummeted nearly a thousand points yesterday, and if it closes down again today, that would make the longest straight run of friday losses since 2006. anne-marie? >> naomi, thank you.

some doctors are using telemedicine to combat the spread of the coronavirus. adriana diaz reports from chicago. >> reporter: we were at rush university medical center when the fifth illinois coronavirus case was confirmed. >> keep our staff safe, to keep our patients safe as well. >> reporter: dr. paul casey treated him. that's dr. casey on the left. in the coronavirus patient's room. he used a tablet to conference in and infectious disease expert. >> we brought the patient in through our separate entrance that our other patients are using. >> reporter: the patient is a male in his 20s, one of the youngest in the u.s. infected so far. he traveled to italy and is now in stable condition. the case spotlights the front lines hospitals like rush are now on. they're now using virtual visits to address patient concerns and prevent infected patients from entering the er. in the three hours we were there, they conducted six video chats with concerned patients. to see how it works, we use the

system to interview dr. shah. what is the benefit of having a patient who may have coronavirus dial into the system versus coming into the emergency room? >> we prefer n unnecessarily expose healthy individuals to the virus if it can be avoided. the last thing we would want is a patient to have a lot of risk factors to sit in a busy waiting room and potentially infect other individuals. >> reporter: we were in the middle of an interview when the news broke of a confirmed case in illinois and the patient was at the same hospital. the patient was brought into the specially designated ambulance entrance only for potential coronavirus patients, because it bypasses the er and takes them straight into isolation. adriana diaz, cbs news, chicago. ahead on "cbs this morning," there will be more on this outbreak in an hour long special, coronavirus, the race to respond. we're going to hear from health experts on how to protect your family. everything you need to know, that's later on "cbs this morning." joe biden and bernie sanders

are hoping to get the backing of elizabeth warren, now that the massachusetts senator has dropped out of the presidential race. yesterday warren ended her once promising campaign, in the same place it started, at her home in cambridge. she failed to win a single primary and finished a disappointing third in her home state. warren suggested that she would take time before deciding whom to endorse. she also reflected on the race. >> there are two lanes, a progressive lane that bernie sanders is the incumbent for and a moderate lane that joe biden is the incumbent for, and there's no room for anyone else in this. i felt that wasn't right. but evidently i was wrong. >> six states hold primaries next tuesday, including the key state of michigan. yesterday biden picked up the endorsement of michigan governor gretchen whitmer. sanders canceled appearances in mississippi today to focus on michigan. harvey weinstein is on slan.

his spokesman said he was transferred to an infirmary unit at rikers island jail complex yesterday. weinstein had been staying at bellevue hospital since he was convicted of rape and sexual assault last month. he underwent a heart procedure at bellevue on wednesday. weinstein faces up to 29 years in prison when he is sentenced next wednesday. a man convicted of being the accomplice in the killings of three alabama police officers was executed. nathaniel woods died following a lethal injection last night. the case garnered national attention and advocate for woods including dr. martin luther king jr.'s son who urged the governor to commute woods' sentence. there are new developments in the investigation into two missing idaho children. their mother now faces child abandonment charges. lori vallow was booked into an idaho jail yesterday after being extradited from hawaii. she had been living there with a man she married just after the

kids were last seen in september. jonathan vigliotti reports from rexburg, idaho. >> she looks like she has handcuffs on, do you see. >> reporter: video captures lori vallow on the mainla surrounded by law enforcement, as the fbi releases for the first time the last known image of 17-year-old tylee ryan, alive, on this family trip to yellowstone national park. tylee, her brother j.j. and uncle alex cox. cbs news was the first to report that the focus is now on the park. fbi agents are asking tourists for help, hoping someone may have seen this truck or the kids in yellowstone on september 8th. the last known image of 7-year-old j.j. came a week later, back in idaho. j.j.'s grandparents, larry and kate woodcock, first reported the kids missing. police in idaho say vallow repeatedly lied about her children's whereabouts. she and her new husband flew to hawaii alone, ignoring a court

we should say right up front that the driver here is okay, but that's a miracle after this collision that reportedly happened this week. this was posted by the lapd with a warning to obey signals at train tracks. unbelievable. singer r. kelly is facing new charges. kelly pleaded not guilty yesterday in chicago to an updated federal indictment that includes charges of child pornography, sexual exploitation of children, and conspiracy to defraud the u.s. government. a prosecutor said the government plans to file more charges against kelly in the coming weeks, including from a new accuser. kelly, who faces dozens of other federal and state sexual misconduct charges, has denied ever abusing anyone. prince william showed off a hidden talent during his tour of ireland with his wife kate. the prince put his juggling skills to the test yesterday. he managed to keep three balls in the air. his brother, prince harry and his wife meghan are back in london. last night they appeared at one

on the cbs money watch, losses for airlines could total billions in the coronavirus outbreak. and corruption charges against a former uaw president. diane king hall has that and more. good morning, diane. >> good morning, anne-marie. this morning asian markets closed sharply lower following losses on wall street yesterday. stocks plunged as the coronavirus continues to fray investors' nerves. the dow skidded 969 points. the nasdaq dropped 279 and the s&p 500 sank 106. the coronavirus outbreak could cost airlines as much as $113 billion in lost revenue. the international air transport association says due to a collapse in air travel, representatives of the airline industry group say the industry needs help from governments including waving some requirements and taxes and fees to lighten the burden on struggling carriers. the former president of the united autoworkers is facing corruption charges. prosecutors say gary jones

plotted with others at the union to embezzle more than $1 million. they say the cash was used for lavish expenses, like private villas, golf outings and horseback rides on beaches. jones who has been under scrutiny for months quit his post in november. olive garden firne its managers after an alleged racist incident at one of its indiana restaurants. the manager is accused of complying with a white customer's demand last weekend to replace her table's black server with one who wasn't black. an olive garden spokeswoman says the company does not tolerate discrimination and decided to cut ties with the manager involved following an investigation. >> anne-marie. >> hopefully they're banning the customer also from coming back to any of its restaurants. >> that's right. it's sad, it's 2020, and you still hear things like that. >> yes, indeed. diane king hall at the new york stock exchange. thanks, diane. >> you got it. still ahead, an official name for the mars rover. we'll tell you which name was selected from thousands of entries from students.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ perseverance. >> and with that, the newest mars rover has an official name. nasa made the announcement after a contest for school kids. there were 28,000 entries to name the rover and the winner is a virginia 7th grader named alex mather. he and his family will get to watch perseverance launch from cape canaveral this summer. and we'll get a chance to see our first super moon of the year. it occurs when a full moon is closest to the earth and its orbit. it appears bigger and brighter than normal. the moon will appear full from

>> i grew up in this neighborhood and i'm very happy that we're making a move on this home. >> reporter: she's just about to close, and it is the perfect time. the mortgage rate for a 30-year fixed loan has dropped over the past two years, and is now at the historic low of 3.29%. the real estate agent says it is giving her business a boost. >> now since interest rates have gone down, there is a resurgence of buyers. >> this is a great time to either buy or refinance your mortgage. >> reporter: cbs news business analyst jill schlesinger says investors worried about the economic impact of coronavirus are buying safer u.s. treasury bonds, and that's pushing down rates for the ten-year treasury. >> that's important because mortgage rates often key off of the ten-year treasury. >> reporter: she made an offer on this house in early february. she's now getting a mortgage. interest rates have dropped so low, she expects to save $300 a
