everywhere. everywhere. everywhere. everywhere. live from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix 5 news. a cruise ship with nearly 2 dozen people who tested positive for coronavirus is expected to dock tomorrow and oakland. is headed for terminal no longer in operation. >> a list of large public gatherings that have been canceled keeps growing. sports teams are taking precautions even though they play games. if you are looking for hand sanitizer, you are out of luck. there are signs that panic buying is slowing down. it is 6 am on sunday and thank you for joining us. i am devin fehely. emily has the morning off.

let's check with the weather. any rain in the forecast? >> technically a small chance that if we got any it would be a momentary spit. you wouldn't get anything to measure. i think the bigger issue is that it is much colder. if you are going to step outside, an early riser, some places are 14 degrees colder right now. yesterday at this time it was warmer. let's look at treasure island back at the city. santa rosa, 33 degrees. if you look at the icon in front, see the moon? that is the one location without clouds. the clear skies have allowed the sheltered valleys to plummet as far as temperatures go. look at the difference. san jose is only 3 degrees

colder than yesterday. just to show you what's going on, yes there are a few showers out there if you can see them. you can only see them when they are moving. when i stopped the radar like now, you hardly notice anything. maybe through the marin headlands and maybe a bit down here on the san mateo county line. i will be back in two minutes. there is a small opportunity for rain. the grand princess cruise ship with 21 people have been diagnosed with coronavirus is expected to dock tomorrow in the port of oakland. it will reportedly docket the terminal no longer in operation. 3500 passengers have been quarantined on the ship. it is been held off of northern california for several days. so for only 45 passengers have been tested for the virus.

passengers who require immediate treatment will be the first to leave the ship. the rest will be tested and remain quarantined if necessary. betty yu spoke via face time with a passenger on the ship. >> this is the living room area. >> they gave us a tour of the cabin. >> we need answers and need to know where we are going and we need to be tested. >> she's one of 3500 passengers stuck on the grand princess. the journey from san francisco to hawaii was interrupted on the return when officials learned that a man who had traveled on the ship last month died of covid-19 on wednesday. >> at least 21 people on board the trip have tested positive for the virus. 19 of those are crewmembers. >> it is what it is.

coronavirus here in the bay area. in southern california california cruise ship is docking. there waiting to see if a passenger has the virus. no one is getting off until results confirm a negative test. >> in a statement carnival said they hope to start disembarking passengers at 6:00. that did not happen. the panorama pulled into port this morning and passengers have been kept on board. carnival said the guest hasn't traveled internationally and she doesn't need any of the cdc risk factors for covid-19. the doctors who checked her at a local hospital wanted to test her for coronavirus just to be safe. in the meantime guest have missed flights and had to cancel other plans. it is not clear how many people are on board but the ship can hold up to 4000 passengers in troubles to spots in mexico. the ship was supposed to fill up and leave with new

passengers and they too are stuck waiting. including a man who said he is not worried. >> not at all, wash your hands more and stay away from people that are coughing. don't touch things. people are more aware. if you take care of that and stay aware, it will be okay. we are not afraid. >> we are told that the test was expedited. they hope to have results back by 6:00. we don't know if that happened but assuming it was negative, carnival was planned to start disembarking passengers. the cruise line did not specify what would happen if the test came back positive. in santa clara county health officials have been urging people to avoid large crowds. the san jose sharks and earthquake plan to keep playing the games as schedule. the warnings that prompted the

disinfected spray and wipes. >> it is not that crowded. actually the lines are not that long. i got good parking. >> the weather could've been a factor keeping people home. it appears to be cooling off with the panic buying. even though fear remains high. >> my doctorate dies me that if i catch the virus there's a chance of me surviving is slim due to the respiratory problems i have. >> she went to a number of stores but could not find hand sanitizer. >> i drove up here to see if i could get some hand sanitizer. nothing. >> with the exception of hand sanitizer, i did find toilet taper and water at target or in cvs. the other popular thing missing is the free samples at costco. they suspended that due to the coronavirus concerns. >> that would be a bummer but

it makes sense. at least for the foreseeable future. >> there's no need to panic and the best thing to do is practice good hygiene and wash your hands often. i am a dahl and. a proposed state law promises to protect workers who may be a been exposed to coronavirus. it would prohibit employers from firing workers who have to stay at home but are out of sick days or don't have sick days. the bills author said quote we need to support workers so they can take every action necessary to prevent the spread of the disease. coming up, the iditarod dogsledding race begins today in alaska. competitors will travel through the wilderness for more than a week. >> the burrowing owls are slowly disappearing. why communities may have to dig deep to bring them back.

in san mateo county wildlife officials are warning hikers to keep an eye on the surroundings after a mountain lion sighting. the cat was spotted near the hiking trail at the edgewood county park. the sheriff's office said the mountain lion was not

aggressive. it is time for the race across alaska and. the iditarod trail sled dog race gets underway today. the ceremonial start was yesterday and anchorage. there will be 57 mosher's. the second smallest in the last two decades. interest has declined recently with rising costs, smaller cash prizes and pressure on sponsors from animal rights activists. the race is nearly 1000 mile long. it last for 10-11 days. let's plan out some of the headlines. first, it is colder this morning. we showed you that at the top of the newscast. we are almost 15 degrees colder than yesterday. that is the first headline. the second headline will say we have a chance for a lingering shower. not just today, we have a chance . the chance for a lingering

shower will stay with us all the way through wednesday. none of it will be a big deal or amount to much. there is the storm sitting off the coast that will keep threatening to show up and give us a chance of rain. once we passed that by the middle of the week, it will be sunny and warm. first off here's high-def doppler showing us the light showers out there this morning. you can see them racing from the south to the north and there's not a lot to them. we see there aren't any showing up with real consequence. don't planning on using the windshield wipers at this point. let's play it to the rest of the morning, here's a good example. this goes to about noon. maybe there is a spotty shower moving across the peninsula. here we are in the afternoon. this is 3:00. you can see maybe a spotty shower here or there. if it stays cloudy, and the rain that pops up doesn't

amount to much. and it doesn't last long. the daytime highs today, we see them top out in the low 60s. cloudy and temperature similar to where they were yesterday. any rain we get doesn't last long. here's the reason why. we will have a chance of rain not just today but going all the way through wednesday. the storm is sitting off the coast and if we put this in futurecast, you see it's been its wheels. plenty of rain mixed in and some is thrown our way. is that most of us will go to southern california. it says tuesday night, that is when we have the next chance to see maybe a stray shower. most likely to the south bay. here's another look. this is tuesday night at 8:15. wednesday also will have a small chance of rain.

if you look at the totals, it's less than a 10th of an inch of rain. the majority will be focused from the second half of tuesday into wednesday. you will see in the 7-day forecast, i don't have rain icons on there. it should stay relatively warm as well, even with the small chance for rain. then we will really warm up one that passes. it will be sunny and warm for thursday and friday. then we increase clouds for next weekend. we have more coming up in the next half hour. back to you. it didn't last long yesterday but midmorning was actually raining pretty good. >> we had some isolated places and picked up as much as 3/10 of an inch of rain. that's good for us. we will need a lot more. california's burrowing owls

welcome back. the time is almost 6:30. let's get a check of the weather with darren and the weather center. >> some of us wake up to temperatures that are 15 degrees colder than 24 hours ago. if you step out the door this time of day and you are in the north bay you will notice that. looking at the map you see the difference between where the thermometer is now and yesterday. you guys are feeling this the difference. most other spots, while colder is not as dramatic. it 7 degrees colder in concord. that means here's where the numbers stand. it is 44 in concord, chilly but not as cold as the 32 in santa rosa. a 12 degree difference. look at the bay and its 3

degrees shy of 50. there are a few light showers, if you look at high-def doppler, look hard to see them but they are there. you can only spot them when they are moving. but here and now you don't see them unless we come in for a real close-up look. a moment ago i had a few blips of green and there's one on the bay bridge. futurecast will show us this continuing through the day. plenty of clouds. every once in a while you see a blip of green that moves through the bay area. that gets us to noon today and here we are at 3:00. non-will amount to very much. there's a chance for an isolated very light sprinkle. i will be back with more in a few minutes. the grand princess cruise ship with 21 people have been diagnosed with coronavirus is now expected to dock tomorrow

at the port of oakland. the ship will reportedly docket a terminal that is no longer in operation. more than 3500 passengers had been quarantined. only 45 passengers have been tested so far for the virus. passengers who require hospitalization will be first to leave and the rest will be tested and remain quarantined if necessary. at least 10 people are dead and another 23 missing after a hotel being used in chinese in the battle against coronavirus suddenly collapsed. it was housing people who come from areas hit hard by the epidemic. all of them had tested negative . of many cities are isolating people from hard-hit areas or 14 days. it is not clear what caused it to collapse. strength italy has ordered a lockdown across much of its wealthy northern area. including the financial capital of milan. it is that country's latest attempt to contain a rapidly growing coronavirus outbreak. the unprecedented restrictions will affect 16 million people.

suddenly turns into wine. people in one town in north italy got a sweet surprise. they turned on the faucet but out came wine. no divine intervention. it was result of a technical mishap at a nearby winery. somehow it managed to redirect 1000 liters of finished wine through the water pipes of about 20 homes. they have been hit hard by the coronavirus outbreak. but this might have helped calm the nerves of a few people. kind of a fortunate turn of events depending on how you like it. the story with today's forecast is actually happening now. the main impact, if you were in early riser and step outside, expected to feel much colder today. it did yesterday. look at the map, it is color- coded. you see deeper shades of blue for the north bay than the

south bay. there's green even showing up in santa clara. let me put numbers on the screen. it is 32 degrees in santa rosa. upper 40s in south bay. a huge difference. it is the numbers in the north bay that i'm trying to spot light. it is 15 degrees colder than yesterday. so bundle up, probably not need the umbrella. there is a small chance you might get a very momentary sprinkle today. i will show you that on futurecast. it is not the rain. it will be cloudy today. if the rain is not the headline it is the morning lows. the daytime highs are not that different. right around 60 for most places. we will go to 58 in santa rosa. as cold as it is now, you will warm up to where everybody else is going.

call it a great day. looking like it could rain at any point. if you look at high-def doppler now, it is the last three hours and you can see the motion, there are showers. really spotty and isolated. they fall apart before they do anything. barely within reach here off the coast. if we put the futurecast on, this switches to high-def doppler. there is the chance. not much but that's the few spotty hit or miss showers. that's why you won't need the umbrella. however, this pattern will hold until we get to wednesday. this pattern will stay cloudy and there will be an opportunity for a light shower. as long as we have the storm sitting off the coast. this is what has been driving everything for the last 36 hours . the real focus will go to southern california and they will get good rain but here that

is tuesday night. that is probably the next point in time where the system will be able to throw enough rain our way that we can talk about the possibility for something more noticeable. here's a closer view. stopping the futurecast on tuesday evening. there's a chance of a few light showers going into wednesday morning. not a lot in terms of measurable rainfall. look at the totals. as we look at the 7-day forecast in a second, i didn't put raindrops on their, is just an increase in clouds. not meaningful enough to put it there. however that will be snow falling in the sierra. it is like a lingering storm. and the next thing that shows up is sunny and mid 70s. by the end of the week of we go

this week's student rising above scholar got a new perspective when she went away to college. as michelle griego reports, she wanted to inspire others to make a change. >> i wanted to be my own woman and know that i can stand my own ground. >> jenny mendoza is a strong young woman. a role model for others. this successful college sophomore has seen her share of

tough times. >> growing up my dad, he did drink a lot. there were other issues like domestic abuse. >> violence in subjects abuse followed economic struggle. they lost their home and education became her salvation. >> i found school to be a home away from home. a safe space for me. >> new challenges emerged at college. her parents divorced and she struggled. >> i felt that those challenges are really what brakes students in college. it's not academics, that can be helpful. you need help for your life. >> being away from home at that difficult time was a blessing of sorts. the distance allowed her to see her mom and dad from a new perspective. >> seeing the pain that a lot of women in my community went through and also the men. there was toxic masculinity and

all of this pressure. i think that recognizing that and knowing that is predominant and very prevalent thing in our community. it made me understand how i cannot become that. >> she made a commitment to herself. >> i wanted to be the change. >> she stayed close to her family and community. she wants to be a social justice advocacy lawyer. so she seeks good mentors of her own like cynthia chandler, director of legal incubator. a committee of lawyers dedicated to providing affordable legal service. >> she is incredibly smart and very caring and thoughtful. that's what we need. we want to work with people who were dependable. >> that she goes to summer break, she's looking for to new opportunities while staying true to herself. >> i wanted to branch out and go elsewhere. find the resource that i need

time for look at this morning's top stories. the crews that ship with 21 people diagnosed with coronavirus is set to dock tomorrow and the port of oakland. it will reportedly docket a terminal no longer in operation. or the 3500 passengers had been quarantined on the ship off the northern california coast. only 45 passengers have been tested for the virus. passengers who require hospitalization will lead first. the rest will be tested and will remain quarantined if necessary. strump another major bay area event is being postponed.
