good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. a cruise ship forced on lockdown over the coronavirus is expected to dock in oakland, california, today. there are at least 21 people on board the "grand princess" who the are infected. there are more than 3,500 passengers on the ship from 54 countries. those from the u.s. will be transported to military bases in california, texas, and georgia. meantime, crew members aboard the "regal princess" cruise ship off florida have been cleared o. overnight passengers were allowed to disembark. the state department is urging americans to avoid travel on cruise ships altogether. the total number of coronavirus cases in the u.s. has surged to more than 560. the death toll has climbed to at least 24. laura podesta is here in new york. what's the next step for cruise ship passengers set to dock in

oakland today? >> reporter: good morning. this morning the passengers are going to begin their multi-day operation of disembarking the "grand princess" cruise ship. those exhibiting symptoms will be the first to get medical treatment. among americans, even those not exhibiting symptoms, will be held for a mandatory 14-day quarantine at various military bases around the u.s. when this operation is complete, we're told the port of oakland will be scrubbed clean. alabama does not have any confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus yesterday, but this huntsville restaurant is not taking any chances. >> we know this is coming. we are watching the news just like everybody else, and we want to make sure our customers feel comfortable. people in the u.s. are now infected as testing for the virus increases. >> i was first three -- >> first two cases in virginia -- >> reporter: federal health

officials say americans need to take preventive measures. >> it's our responsibility to protect the vulnerable. no large crowds, no long trips, and above all, don't get on a cruise ship. >> reporter: at least 21 people aboard the "grand princess" have coronavirus. the cruise ship is expected to dock in oakland today after being held at sea for days. >> this is a very difficult time for you. another 14 days for many of you to be quarantined. but it's all about not only your safety but your family members and your community when you come back home. >> reporter: officials say they aren't ruling out taking the drastic measures that other countries have put into place. >> you know, you don't want to alarm people, but given the spread we've seen, anything is possible. >> reporter: and two members of congress are self-quarantining after meeting a man at a political conference who was infected. those two congressmen would be texas senator ted cruz and arizona congressman paul gassar. anne-marie? >> well can never take any chances. laura podesta here in new york. thank you so much. >> thanks. a sweeping quarantine is

under way in northern italy to combat the rapid spread of the coronavirus. the outbreak is already the worst in europe and the worst outside of asia. the new travel restrictions are impacting 16 million people, a quarter of the population, until next month. charlie d'agata reports from rome. >> reporter: in the war against coronavirus, italy chose the nuclear option. a complete lockdown, a quarantine of 16 million ppl city. a region that includes venice and milan, its financial capital. a quarter of the country's population. nobody in or out until april 3rd in a country already on the verge of a recession. weddings and funerals have been banned, and take a look at soccer powerhouse a.c. milan's game today -- no fans allowed. the vatican has introduced new measures, too. rather than the pope appearing in person at his apartment window, instead he delivered his

aprently downplaying the otbreak as more cases continue to emerge here in the u.s. weijia jiang reports. >> reporter: from his florida resort, president trump brushed off the chance of coronavirus making its way to the white house, even as the mayor of washington confirmed the first case in the nation's capital. >> no, i'm not concerned at all. no, i'm not. >> reporter: the president showed the same confidence on twitter claiming we have a perfectly coordinated and fine-tuned plan. >> this precedent has created a culture of misinformation. >> reporter: on "face the nation," connecticut senator chris murphy said there could be thousands of cases in his state, even though only two have been confirmed. >> i think we have no concept of the scope of this epidemic yet because we have not been able to test. what is unforgivable is that the administration didn't see this coming and didn't put the >>eporter: the administration says more than a million tests will be available this week

the coronavirus is also impacting the presidential campaign. democratic candidate bernie sanders says that his staff is gauging when it may become necessary to cancel large rallies. health experts say that they could be breeding grounds to spread the virus. and sanders and joe biden will be in michigan today. it is the biggest prize tomorrow as voters in six states head to the polls. as nikole killion reports, both picked up big endorsements yesterday. i have decided that i am with great enthusiasm going to endorse joe biden for president of the united states. >> reporter: california senator kamala harris made it official, becoming the eighth former presidential candidate to back joe biden. harris ended her own bid in december, gaining prominence for this debate moment when she challenged the former vice president over desegregation and school bussing. >> do you agree today that you were wrong to oppose bussing in

fiona hill, mr. trump's former top adviser on russia, appeared on "60 minutes." it was her first interview since testimony in the impeachment hearing in november. she was asked about possible meddling by russia in our election. >> talking about 2020, there have been a lot of stories saying that the russians are hoping that bernie sanders will be the candidate, the democratic candidate. does that make sense to you? >> it doesn't make sense. what the russians are looking for is the two -- kind of the polar opposites. they're looking to basically have the smallest possible number of people supporting those two candidates with everybody else kind of lost in the middle so that it exacerbates, exaggerates, as well, the polarization in the country. >> hill also said russian president vladimir putin has been abl exploit divisions ripeopedge, anha them estion the legitimacy of the country's systems.

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ on the cbs "money watch," costco is pulling free food samples, and moviegoers may be spooked by the coronavirus. naomi ruckham has that and morning. good morning. asian markets saw another day of steep losses after a fall in global oil prices. investors continue to brace for the worldwide economic fallout from the coronavirus outbreak. on friday, the dow sank 256 points. the nasdaq dropped 162 points, and the s&p 500 lost 51 points. as you mentioned, oil prices

are down following a dispute among producers. there are concerns the global economy weakened by the coronavirus could lead to an oversupply of crude. brent crude, the international standard, plunged to almost $31 a barrel overnight after touching its lowest price since 2016. the dramatic drop follows a 10% dip for u.s. oil on friday. its biggest loss in more than five years. and don't expect to get your hands on free samples at costco, at least some of the stores. the retailer is not giving out free snacks as concerns over, yes, the coronavirus intensify. it's not clear if costco pulled samples from all of its stores or when the suspension would end. it comes as costco says it's trying to keep up with the demand for bottled water and disinfectants in the wake of that outbreak. the coronavirus appeared to keep some folks from going to the movies this weekend. disney and pixar's "onward" didn't score as big as the box office had hoped. >> it's a wizard staff -- dad was a wizard. >> your dad was an accountant.he
