good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. a day after record stock market losses there appears to be signs of a possible turn around this morning. overnight stocks in asia rebounded and dow futures rose. yesterday wall street enjoyed its worse day in more than a decade. today president trump is expected to announce strategies to stimulate the economy. all of this as government officials across the country are calling for calm as the number of infections continues to surge. there are now at least 758 coronavirus cases in the u.s. the death toll stands at 26. laura podesta will have more on the trump administration's response to the economic meltdown but first we want to start with diane king hall. diane, you were at the new york stock exchange. what's going on? >> reporter: wall street posted its biggest one day drop since

the 2008 financial crisis on monday. the dow sank 2013 points. nasdaq plunged 624. s&p 500 tumbled 225. the price of oil skidded nearly 25% after a price war between saudi arabia and russia triggered the biggest daily drol entered a bear market closing the day with the biggest losses since the great recession. a key u.n. trade organization is warning of a looming recession in the global economy as countries grapple with the coronavirus outbreak. asian markets higher this morning and futures here as well. now the trump administration has scheduled an emergency meeting with wall street executives tomorrow. president trump also said he'll meet today with senate and house republicans to discuss possible payroll tax cut as a way to calm financial market fears over the coronavirus. the president also says the white house will work with the

airline and cruise industries to respond to the outbreak. all right. diane king hall at the new york stock exchange. you're going to be joining us later. diane will tell us about music events being cancelled or postponed because of the coronavirus and possibly we're talking about coachella which is massive and other business news. we'll see you then. another cruise ship is on lockdown this one off the coast of florida. princess cruises says the ship will dock in grand cayman to receive test kits. passengers can't disembark and remain off the coast until further notice. a cruise ship with passengers infected by the coronavirus has finally docked in oakland, california. thousands of those passengers are undergoing medical examinations. laura podesta is in new york. where do those passengers go after they've gone through those medical screenings? >> reporter: 19 of the 21 people

infected are crew members. they are going to be treated and quarantined on the ship. the other two are expected to go to san francisco area hospitals. the hundreds of other american passengers are being sent to military bases in california, in texas and georgia where they are going to be quarantined for 14 days. the international passengers will take charter flights to their home countries. passengers aboard the grand princess were thrilled to see the golden gate bridge. with 21 cases of coronavirus on board the ship was stranded at sea for days and passengers were kept in their rooms. >> so good to be outside. >> reporter: after docking at the port of oakland american passengers are being quarantined on military bases and international passengers flown home. >> individuals will not come in to contact with general public. >> reporter: in washington president trump has not been tested for coronavirus despite shaking hands with georgia congressman doug collins and riding air force one with florida congressman matt gates. both of whom are now self-quarantining.

they came into contact with the man last month who later tested pose the negative for covid-19. >> blind sided the world. >> reporter: today the president is meeting with republicans to discuss economic relief. one day after wall street suffered its worse day since the 2008 financial crisis. >> we're also going to be talking about hourly wage earners. >> reporter: democrats say president trump isn't taking the outbreak seriously. >> rather than spend a weekend in washington to get a grip on the crisis, the president was once again golfing at mar-a-lago. >> reporter: and some house and senate democrats have been pushing legislation that would require employers to allow workers to accrue seven days of paid sick leave and to provide an additional 14 days in the event of any public health emergency including the current coronavirus crisis. >> thank you so much. so as laura mentioned president trump didn't get

tested for the coronavirus but has come in to direct contact with some lawmakers who are now in self-quarantine. congressman mark meadows who is the new chief of staff tested negative for the virus but he has decided to self-quarantine. other lawmakers include senator ted cruz and congressman paul gosar. matt gates and julia brownley, meadows, connelly and gates say they are self-quarantining after learning they came into contact with an infected person last month. american conservative union chairman who was joined by vice president mike pence at that convention is in self-quarantine. this morning italy's government said it will approve measures worth $11 billion to counteract the impact of the coronavirus outbreak. the entire country has been put on lockdown. meaning almost all travel is banned. there are now more than 9100

cases confirmed in italy while the death toll stands at more than 460. charlie d'agata reports from rome. >> reporter: dramatic new developments in the worst outbreak outside of china. severe restrictions on the entire nation around 60 million people. all sporting events are off including soccer. general public should only go to work and work from home if possible. public gatherings are out of the question. coronavirus contamination is growing in number and spreading in territory. even before the dramatic move world health organization had applauded italy's extreme step forward. >> we encouraged that italy is taking aggressive measures to contain its epidemic. >> reporter: aggressive measures that look like this, new video allegedly showing an intensive care unit inside italy's red zones.

potentially scenes that will be commonplace across the u.s.. the prime minister said we're running out of time. americans can still travel back home, they are not going to be stuck here. italians are being told don't travel. in fact, don't even leave home unless necessary. charlie d'agata, cbs news, rome. there's some encouraging news about the coronavirus in china. officials this morning reported no new locally transmitted cases outside of hubei province for the third straight day. that's where wuhan is, the epicenter of the outbreak. there have been more than 80,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus in mainland china so far. more than 3100 people have died there. almost 60,000 people have recovered. this morning chinese president xi jinping visited wuhan. first time he's done so since the outbreak began last year. wuhan is under lockdown but state media say officials are considering allowing people in

some areas to start traveling. and the coronavirus outbreak is taking its toll on the travel industry particularly cruise lines. manuel bojorquez shows us the impact on the multi-billion dollar business. >> reporter: the new state department warning against traveling on cruise ships during the outbreak did not deter these passengers leaving from port miami. in fact, six ships set sail. >> we have clorox wipes. we're good. we'll be healthy. going to be all right. don't touch the hand rails. >> reporter: ships were leaving with fewer passengers, an indication a slow down is hitting the $53 billion a year industry. responsible for 420,000 jobs in this country alone. >> they have more cancellations right now than reservations. this is revenue they can't recoup. it doesn't trickle down, it tumbles down. the restaurant worker, cab driver, maid at the hotel. >> reporter: the travel slump

could be the worse since the 2008 recession. airlines cutting capacity. amtrak is cutting its service on some much its most profitable routes. vice president mike pence held a travel summit this week with cruise line leaders. took place at a port where a worker tested positive. unlike smaller outbreaks cruise lines weathered above this one is different. >> a cruise they think they will get quarantined. everybody wants to keep their options open. >> reporter: cruise lines enhanced measures including having more medical professionals on board and denying any passenger who has recently traveled to the hardest hit countries. the virus could cost the world's tourism industry $46 billion a month. manuel bojorquez, cbs news, miami beach. the coronavirus outbreak is not stopping either joe biden or bernie sanders from holding rallies and shaking hands on the campaign trail. today voters in six states,

idaho, mississippi, missouri, north dakota, washington state and the state with the biggest prize, michigan head to the polls. there are 352 delegates up for grabs today. joe biden has won 648 delegates. bernie sanders has claimed 563. 1,991 delegates are needed to win the nomination. biden campaigned in michigan yesterday alongside senators kamala harris and cory booker, both former rivals have endorsed biden. coming up on the morning news now, why basketball legend charles barkley is selling his memorabilia, including his mvp trophy, and a medical miracle for a little girl who suffered a rare flu complication. this is the "cbs morning news".

there was a recovery for a young flu patient. and a new locker room policy by professional sports. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. "usa today" reports major league baseball, the nba, the nhl and major league soccer will close teams locker rooms and clubhouses to the media. it comes over concerns of the coronavirus. they issued a joint statement saying the new media policy goes into effect today. locker rooms and clubhouses will only be open to players and essential employees until further notice. for now neither the nba or major league baseball plan to postpone games or play them without fans. "washington post" says basketball legend charles barkley is selling his are memorabilia to build affordable housing in his hometown of leads, alabama. he plans to sell his 1993 mvp trophy, one of his olympic gold medals and other memorabilia from his hall of fame career. the mvp trophy alone could fetch up to $400,000.

there is one possible snag, though. barkley says he thinks his daughter will keep the 1992 olympic gold medal for sentimental reasons. cbsnews.com reports a 4-year-old girl who lost her vision after a rare complication from the flu can see again. she contracted the flu late last year. she survived but the infection attacked her brain. in january her doctor told cbs news it was hard to tell if she would regain her sight. but yesterday her sight had fully returned. she's still showing some signs of brain-damage. the family said it's so awesome to see her personality come back. still to come, more concerts fall victim to the coronavirus. how madonna and other top acts are cancelling or postponing shows amid calls for safety. s amid calls for safety. this is hal. this is hal's heart. it's been broken. and put back together.

the coronavirus is forcing many musicians to cancel concerts. madonna has scrapped two of her madam x shows in france. she announced her shows in paris are cancelled since france is banning events with more than 1,000 people in response to the outbreak. pearl jam announced its north american tour is being postponed on twitter. the rock band said it's hometown of seattle has been hit hard and has seen how quickly these disastrous situations can escalate. coachella and stage coach are in talks to move the music festivals to october. according to billboard organizers will know soon if the move is possible. if not the festivals could be cancelled. two major air carriers are announcing change fee updates as the coronavirus spread. delta airlines said it will allow travellers with tickets to any destination in march or april to change or cancel their flight without paying a major change fee regardless of when the ticket was purchased. separately united airlines says

it will waive change fees for the next 12 months for flights booked between march 3rd and march 31st of this year. a guilty plea from columbia gas of massachusetts for violating pipeline safety laws. the company is behind a series of natural gas explosions that killed one person and damaged dozens of homes. the blast ripped through three communities in boston. the gas company agreed to pay $53 billion as part of a plea deal last month. still to come, "sesame street" is counting on you. how some popular characters are making sure children are not overlooked in this year's census. not overlooked in this year's census. this is the age of expression.
