it is thursday, march 12th, it is thursday, march 12th, 2020, and this is the "cbs morning news." good to be with you, i'm anne-marie green. so things are looking a little different this morning. we are coming to you from our washington bureau this morning. that's because cbs news headquarters in new york is evacuated after two of our colleagues tested positive for the coronavirus. now they have the network's full support, and our mission to deliver what you need to know will not end. so we begin with this -- the u.s. will suspend most travel to europe amid the growing coronavirus outbreak. president trump announced a 30-day restriction last night, and it goes into effect friday at midnight. however, the rule does not affect the uk. riley carlson reports from

london. >> i have decided to take strong but necessary actions to protect the health and well-being of all americans. >> reporter: the fight to spread the coronanavirus coming into effect friday at midnight.peopl6 euanesgeted n int two wes will not be allowed he u.s. american citizens will be exempt but must be screened at airports. >> the european union failed to take the same precautions and restrict travel from china and other hot spots. as a result, a large number of new clusters in the united states were ceded by travelers from europe. >> reporter: italy is still under lockdown and grappling with the largest outbreak outside of china. the virus has killed more than 800 people there. congress is expected to vote on an emergency response bill today that includes free testing, paid sick leave, and unemployment insurance. >> sorry, guys -- >> reporter: concern is spreading just as fast as the

virus. the nba has suspended its season after a player tested positive for covid-19. the ncaa says march madness will go on but without fans. oscar-winning actor tom hanks announced on instagram that he and his wife rita wilson contracted the virus while in australia. with coronavirus now declared a pandemic, the u.s. and countries around the world are desperate to use new tactics to stop it. riley carlson, cbs news, london. >> all right. thank you. in the state hardest hit by the coronavirus, washington state, governor jay inslee is taking dramatic measures to try and slow the outbreak. he is banning gatherings of more than 250 people in the seattle area. health officials say at least ten long-term care facilities in that area have reported cases, and patients have died at three locations. jonathan vigliotti reports from the facility that is at the epicenter of this outbreak.

>> reporter: this is how bridget parkhill and her sister now visit their mother who recently tested positive for coronavirus at the life care center in kirkland. how did you process that? >> it wasn't a shock t was positive. it should have been a priority to get everybody tested so they could get all the negative people out of here before they turned positive. >> reporter: but a shortage of tests meant only the critically ill were prioritized. at least 11 other long-term care facilities in washington including the josephine caring community now have infected residents or staff. >> the facility is in lockdown. so no visitors, no consultants, and no families. i can tell you that's incredibly tough. >> reporter: in northern california, officials confirmed tuesday that an assisted living resident in their 90s died there. a recent study examining coronavirus cases in china found that in people over 80 years old, the death rate was nearly 15%. in seattle's king county, 74

more cases were announced tuesday bringing the statewide total to more than 260. >> if you do the math, it gets very disturbing. >> reporter: governor jay inslee outlined new rules for nursing homes, including limiting patients to one visitor per day, and screening employees and volunteers for symptoms at the start of their shift. >> the number of people who are infected in an epidemic like this will double in the state of washington unless we take some real action here. >> reporter: if you have a loved one in a facility, experts have recommendations. they say call to see what the staffing is like and their cleaning protocols. they're also saying maintain your distance. use the phone or facetime if possible. and they're also saying if you have a loved one inside, keep them there. to take them out at this point they say is too risky. jonathan vigliotti, cbs news, kirkland, washington. all right. to some other news now. hours after learning that he could be in prison until he's at least the age of 90, disgraced

movie mogul harvey weinstein was rushed to a new york city hospital with chest pains. he's under observation. weinstein's lawyers are vowing to appeal. his accusers say he got justice. michael george reports. [applause ] >> reporter: harvey weinstein's former victims smiled after he was sentenced to 23 years in prison. two gave emotional victim impact statements during the hearing. >> the sentence is long enough for him at least to begin to understand what he's done. whether he will ever be truly sorry i don't know. >> reporter: weinstein's defense attorneys had asked for the lightest sentence of five years after he was convicted of forcibly performing oral sex on assistant miriam haley in 2006 and raping aspiring actress jessica mann in 2013. they cited his age and frail health. weinstein used a walker during the trial and had a stent inserted last week for a blocked artery. >> that sentence that was just handed down by the their court

was obscene. that number was obnoxious. there are murderers who will get out of court faster than harvey weinstein will. >> reporter: prosecutors did not push for a specific number of years but said weinstein deserved severe punishment. at his trial last month, weinstein was convicted of two counts of criminal sex act. he was acquitted of three other charges. weinstein had maintained all the sexual activity was consensual. but he said in court he feels remorse, and he's trying to be a better person. weinstein also faces additional charges in california. michael george, cbs news, new york. all right. politics now. joe biden's overwhelming primary victories the last two tuesdays have made senator bernie sanders' path to the democratic presidential nomination narrow and steep. but sanders is not ready to quit just yet. >> reporter: bernie sanders announced he is staying in the race but admits he has work to do if he wants to beat joe

biden. >> while our campaign has won the ideological debate, we are losing the debate over electability. >> reporter: pressure within the party is expected to mount for senator sanders to abandon hisi challenge after he lost four of the states voting tuesday. sanders says he can win with the support of young voters. >> i say to the democratic establishment, in order to win in the future, you need to win the voters who represent the future of our country. >> reporter: biden is asking all of sanders' supporters, young and old, to join him. >> i want to thank bernie sanders and his supporters for their tireless energy and their passion. we share a common goal, and together we'll defeat donald trump. >> reporter: sanders also emphasized that president trump must be defeated. it's unclear what campaign events will look like moving forward with growing concerns

about the spread of coronavirus. both biden and sanders heeded health officials' warnings against large gatherings and canceled campaign events in ohio last night. >> i said all along that we would follow the guidance of the cdc, state and local officials, and public health officials with respect to our campaign events. we'll continue to do that. >> reporter: there won't be a live audience this weekend when biden and sanders debate each other in phoenix. arizona is one of four states voting next tuesday with more than 500 delegates at stake. skyler henry, cbs news, the white house. one week after tornadoes ripped through tennessee, communities are still picking up the pieces. that includes nashville. the country music capital of the world. don dahler shows how an iconic guitar company is helping the city heal. >> reporter: nashville is still reeling from the killer tornadoes that plwed through town on march 3rd. parts of music city will take months to rebuild. as garth brooks told norah o'donnell, they'll have help.

thing to be wary of -- con artists trying to take advantage of people. >> reporter: are scams something that we typically see during a crisis like this? >> yeah, unfortunately scammers are opportunists. during a crisis, this is exactly when we see scams. >> reporter: the better business bureau says they are receiving a growing number of coronavirus-related complaints. mostly from people who try to buy masks. >> we've heard of scams where people order them and then nothing shows up. >> there are a lot of reports coming in now about fake mask sites, either that don't have masks all and are ripping you off or that are selling substandard masks. >> reporter: and finding the real deal can come at a cost. a new report from u.s. pirg examined prices on amazon for masks and hand sanitizer and found some products going for 50% to 230% higher than normal. authorities warn hackers are trying to use the outbreak to infect your computer.

the secret service says criminals are sending out emails that appear to be from a health organization with an attachment claiming to have important coronavirus information. >> clicking on links in an email is particularly dangerous. it could be downloading malware on to your computer. and then it can take its time to scan your computer and find your bank account information, credit card information, passwords, things like that. >> reporter: hutt says criminals are also using social media to set up fake charities in hopes of cashing in on coronavirus. naomi ruckham, cbs news, new york. as sports organizations around the world cancel games over coronavirus fears, there are growing concerns about the 2020 olympics. today's lighting of the iconic olympic flame is closed to the. because of the deadly virus. in japan, the total number of infections has topped 1,300. however, the tokyo governor called the idea of canceling the olympic games, quote, unthinkable. the modern olympics began in 1896 and have been canceled only

will boeing imposes a hiring freeze. those are some of the stories in today's cbs "money watch." it was another brutal day on wall street. policies put in place globally to try and help ease investor fears haven't calmed market downturn. the dow fell into a bear market, ending 11 years in the bull market phase. it skidded 1,464 points yesterday. the nasdaq dropped 392. the s&p 500 fell 140 points. if you're looking to stock up on hand sanitizer, it will not be easy. stores like target and walmart are restricting the amount of coronavirus-linked products shoppers can buy. target tells "usa today" customers can only purchase six disinfectant wipes, hand sanitizers and hand and face wipes per person. meanwhile, the limits on those products at walmart vary by location. the coronavirus outbreak is forcing new york-based shows to suspend live audience tapings. starting monday, "the late show with stephen colbert" will not have a live audience.

other shows following suit include the "tonight show" starring jimmy fallon, and "lat" he view"nnouncedwill not tape with a live studio audience. the action comes as the cases of the virus surge in new york city. and boeing is imposing a hiring freeze as the coronavirus pandemic undercuts air travel. for the coronavirus? there is a catch -- you would have to be infected with it. cindy palm reports from london. >> reporter: this pharmaceutical lab in london is willing to pay volunteers $4,500 to be infected with a coronavirus to test an experimental vaccine. >> i'm in good health. i feel like i could probably take the gamble, yeah. i'd do it. >> would i do that? probably not at the moment. no, if i'm being honest, no. >> reporter: the company says it's looking for about 50 healthy people to try its coronavirus vaccine. have you gotten a lot of interest from volunteers? >> it was pretty amazing. in 24 hours, 9,000 people have registered to be potential volunteers. >> reporter: those who are chosen for the clinical trial will be infected with a less dangerous strain of a coronavirus rather than the potentially deadly covid-19. >> but it is the best possible option because another coronavirus is going to be the most similar to covid-19.

and for ethical reasons we can't be infecting healthy people with co >> reporter: the patients will be quarantined in a room at the lab for about two weeks where they'll have no physical contact with the outside world other than with doctors and nurses. what they eat will also be controlled. the company hopes to start the research in the coming months once it gets approval from the uk's regulatory agency. cindy palm, cbs news, london. we are getting a new look at the dramatic rescue of a paraglider stranded for hours high in the trees in alabama. this happened over the weekend, but we're now getting a look at the incredible video from the alabama law enforcement agency. so first responders were helicoptered in after the man got tangled in the trees in girlie, alabama. he was stuck about 70 feet off the ground for nearly four hours. thankfully he was untangled and unharmed. coming up on "cbs this morning," we'll speak with vice president mike pence who's in charge of the whit house's

april 15th tax deadline for certain businesses and individuals. >> i will always put the well being of america first. >> reporter: stocks plummeted after the world health organization changed its assessment of the outbreak. >> covid-19 can be characterized as a pandemic. >> reporter: at a hearing on capitol hill, the top expert on infectious diseases issued a dire warning to lawmakers. >> we will see more cases, and things will get worse than they are right now. >> reporter: treasury secretary steven mnuchin and house speaker nancy pelosi have been meeting in person and over the phone to try and find some common ground over a coronavirus stimulus package. house democrats say they have legislation that will call for free testing, paid sick leave, expanded unemployment insurance, and s.n.a.p. increases. they plan to bring it to a vote thursday. >> this is fundamentally what the american people need and fundamentally what the american economy needs.

>> reporter: the capitol is expected to cancel public tours as entities around the u.s. take steps to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus. late wednesday, the ncaa announced that only essential staff and limited family members will be allowed to attend march madness tournament games. cbs news, the white house. and movie stars are not immune from the coronavirus. actor tom hanks has revealed that he now has the virus, along with his wife, rita wilson. both have been isolated in australia where the actor was shooting a movie about elvis presley. in a statement, hanks, who's 63, says he and his wife will do whatever public health and safety require. approaching the situation one day at a time. coming up on "cbs this morning," the very latest on the coronavirus. we'll look at the response from the trump administration as the health officials declare a virus -- rather declare the virus a pandemic. plus, we'll speak with vice president mike pence who's in charge of the white house's coronavirus task force.
