from the broadcast center in los angeles, i'm demarco morgan. it's monday, march 16th, 2020. this is the "cbs morning news." growing restrictions under the coronavirus pandemic. everything from working to eating and socializing is being affected by the outbreak here in the u.s. more changes are coming. travel trouble as americans make a mad dash from overseas. many are finding themselves stuck in long, crowded lines at the airport. just to be clear, you committed here tonight that your running mate if you get the nomination will be a woman? >> yes. >> the former vice president commits to choosing a woman as a running mate as he squared off last night against bernie sanders in their first sanders in their first one-on-one debate. captioning funded by cbs

good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. good to be with you, i'm anne-marie green. yes, we are back in new york, but wewe're still being impacted by the coronavirus, as are many of you. we're still going to give you the information that you need. this morning states are taking aggressive action to battle the coronavirus pandemic. in the u.s. the number of cases tops 3,600. the death toll is at least 69. starting today public schools are closed in at least 33 states. in new york city mayor bill de blasio says classes will not be in session until april 20th. starting tonight residents in hoboken, new jersey, must adhere to a curfew as philly murphy says he is urging people to shelter in their homes. meantime, a government official reportedly says that a clinical

trial to evaluate the coronavirus vaccine is set to begin today in seattle. cindy palm has been tracking the latest developments and is joining us now. what's the president saying that people need to know to ease their fears? >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. president trump is urging people to stop hoarding groceries. this comes as supermarket shelves across the country are emptying. president trump is urging americans fearful of the coronavirus to stop panic buying at the grocery store. >> you don't have to buy so much. take it easy. just relax. >> reporter: at the same time, the cdc is recommending there be no gatherings of more than 50 people across the country for the next eight weeks. new travel restrictions caused huge crowds at airports as pasengers returning from europe waited to clear customs. officials aren't yet recommending a domestic travel ban. >> the worst is yet ahead for us. it is how we respond to that challenge that's going to determine the end point.

>> reporter: many local governments are doing their part to slow the spread. >> our public schools will be closed. >> reporter: new york city is joining a growing number of school districts to shut down. >> i know all of the negative ramifications of this decision, and it's very painful. >> reporter: restaurants and bars around the country are also being ordered to close right before st. patrick's day. >> one of the biggest days of the year. so it's hard when you don't have this many people. >> reporter: the coronavirus was the main topic at last night's democratic presidential debate. >> we're at war with a virus. >> reporter: former vice president joe biden and vermont senator bernie sanders debated who can better lead the nation during a global pandemic. >> this coronavirus pandemic exposes the incredible weakness and dysfunctionality of our current health care system. >> people are looking for results, not a revolution. >> reporter: the white house and congress are working on a stimulus bill to help businesses survive the pandemic. the virus has infected about 170,000 people and killed more

than 6,000. now the total number of confirmed infections and deaths outside of china have surpassed those inside the country. anne-marie? >> thank you so much. >> reporter: you got it. the mayor of one new jersey town hit hard by the pandemic is urging all residents there to self-quarantine. teaneck's mayor is asking all 40,000-plus residents to stay home. 18 cases of the virus have been reported there. meanwhile, in new york, hundreds of people a day are being tested at this drive-thru lab in hard-hit new rochelle. the state is aiming to test at least 6,000 people a day starting this week. the next round of travel bans affecting the uk and ireland take effect tonight. americans coming back from either country will undergo a health screening at the airport and then will be asked to self-quarantine for 14 days. these passengers learned of the new restrictions when they arrived in san francisco from dublin over the weekend. >> like they're going to take

our temperature and do an assessment on each of us to see if we're referred for public health risk assessment. >> meantime, united airlines is cutting capacity by 50% for april and may as the coronavirus outbreak drastically reduces the demand for travel. hawaiian airlines is suspending flights to australia and new zealand due to new government entry restrictions at some of the largest airports. there were scenes of chaos as a surge of people coming back from europe faced new restrictions. kris van cleave reports. >> reporter: pandemic panic at some of the nation's biggest airports as new travel restrictions caused long lines to clear customs for people returning from europe. the hours' long wait times in dallas, new york, and chicago packing huge crowds into tight spaces, exactly the kind of gathering americans are being told to avoid. the delay appears to be a mix of staffing, the mandatory health screenings, and newly

implemented declaration forms that caught travelers by surprise. >> we just got an in-flight notification that something must have changed in the ten hours of our flight because border patrol was going to come on to our plane and have us fill out a lot of health forms. >> reporter: president trump tweeting we are doing precise medical screenings at our airports. pardon the interruptions and delays, we are moving as quickly as possible. illinois' governor blasted the federal government's efforts. >> it's going to be even worse. there are a larger number of flights with more people coming and they're unprepared. >> reporter: the growing list of travel restrictions in china and europe come as the airline industry is in free fall. delta slashing capacity by 40% and grounding 300 airplanes in the coming months. american airlines cutting 75% of its international flying and will park and retire most of its long-haul fleet. the world's four biggest cruise

lines are suspending u.s. cruises for a month. an unprecedented shutdown of a $38 billion industry. >> that was kris van cleave reporting from washington. italy has the highest number of new reported coronavirus cases in the world. yesterday the country reported 368 more deaths. it's the biggest one-day rise. italy has reported almost 25,000 cases and more than 1,800 deaths. spain has seen a surge in new cases. the world health organization has named spain the new epicenter. the country's military monitored the streets after the government clamped down on where people could go. elizabeth palmer shows how cities across europe are scrambling to slow the spread of the virus. >> reporter: normally crowded spanish streets are empty. the government has ordered people to stay home, and police in madrid reinforced that message from a drone. you shouldn't be outside, they told pedestrians, unless

absolutely necessary. in france the government decided to go ahead with local elections today. president emmanuel macron conspicuously sanitizing his hands before casting a vote. overall, it's eerily quiet from one end of europe to the other. cafes, bars, and restaurants are closed as are schools. the landmarks are either deserted or like the eiffel tower shut down. for the moment, britain had fewer coronavirus victims than most of europe. businesses here are still working. and the few sporting events that haven't been canceled are drawing crowds. but people are clearly worried. a long line of shoppers waited to stock up outside costco in manchester, and as everywhere, there's been an inexplicable run on toilet paper. as british hospitals get ready for a surge in patients, the health secretary, matt hancock, made an appeal to medical

equipment makers. >> we're saying that if you produce a ventilator, then we will buy it. >> reporter: but nowhere is there panic. instead, solidarity. lolocked down italians singing from their balconies. and in spain, a mass ovation for health care workers manning the hospital front lines. elizabeth palmer, cbs news, london. as we reported earlier, the coronavirus was a key topic at last night's democratic presidential debate in washington. it was the first one-on-one debate between joe biden and bernie sanders. meanwhile, biden made a surprise announcement about who he would pick as his running mate. >> if i'm elected president, my cabinet, my administration will look like the country, and i commit that i will, in fact, apaint a -- pick a woman to be vice president. >> when asked the same question, sanders did not definitively commit but said that in all likelihood he would pick a

wynn resorts said its wynn las vegas property would close for two weeks starting tomorrow. grocery stores are reacting to the virus. chains including kroger, walmart, and trader joe's are reducing store hours to allow time to clean stores, restock, and help keep workers healthy. many items have disappeared from store shelves as people stock up in the wake of the virus. in an unprecedented move for u.s. retailers, many are indefinitely closing down to prevent the spread of the virus. the chains include urban outfitters, nike, abercrombie & fitch, the ski resorts across north america are also being impacted. while some workers are being paid. many are seasonal, and the shutdowns are hitting them hard. more from jonathan vigliotti. >> reporter: the nation's $20 billion winter sports industry is the latest to quarantine. this weekend, resorts announced its closing operations at all of its 37 facilities spread across

15 states and three countries. staff will be paid. >> yeah, you're a little disappointed. on the other hand, you got to do the right thing. >> reporter: the virus is hitting all sectors of the economy from iconic clothing brands like steve madden and nike who is shutting all of their u.s. stores and giving staff paid leave. and the first domino has fallen in las vegas with a tourist economy worth over $34 billion that sustains 300,000 jobs. starting tomorrow, mgm and others have announced layoffs and furloughs. nationwide, hourly wage workers at smaller businesses have been hardest hit. many unable to collect a paycheck while shops are shuttered. >> rent is almost due. oh, my god. it's terrible. >> reporter: players with the nba chicago bulls and nhl blackhawks announced they will personally pay arena workers during the closure. as more businesses close, there are two industries that must stay open. pharmacies and supermarkets like this seattle costco where large groups swarmed the shelves.

forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ on the cbs "money watch," a look at stock futures, and business at the movie box office slows down to a crawl. laura podesta is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, laura. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. stocks are in for another roller coaster week as this coronavirus outbreak continues to impact global markets. from what we're seeing, asian stocks were mostly lower this morning, and u.s. index futures were headed down. it comes after the federal reserve slashed its benchmark interest rate to zero to tackle the economic slowdown gripping the u.s. on friday, you'll remember, stocks slightly bounced back. the dow jones added 1,985 points.

the nasdaq was up 673 points, and the s&p 500 gained 230 points. movie theaters around the u.s. had their worst turnout in over two decades. still the movie "onward" held on to the top spot for the second week running. the animated disney pixar film raked in $10.5 million. the film "i still believe" followed in second, debuting at $9.5 million. and another newbie, "blood shot," came in third with $9.3 million. anne-marie? >> wow. i suppose it's no surprise, right, we're not supposed to be gathering in groups, large groups. people are adhering to it. i suppose that's good news. >> exactly. >> laura podesta at the -- >> i think -- i was going to say, i was watching movies at home. was not going to the theater. i think a lot of people are following suit. >> i agree. laura, you are at the new york stock exchange, thank you so much. so still to come, a warm homecoming.

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ in the philippines, more than 400 people trapped on a coronavirus stricken cruise ship in california arrived home in manila. they will undergo a 14-day quarantine supervised by the cup's department of health. at least 21 people on board the "grand princess" have been diagnosed with the virus. u.s. passengers were transported to military bases in california, texas, and georgia. two, one -- liftoff. liftoff. >> disregard.

president paul sullivan says blood banks are asking healthy people to donate and maintain the blood supply. >> whether it's people in emergency situations, whether it's car accidents, people giving birth, blood is a vital part of our -- our health care system. and we need to make sure that we have it available for the patients. >> going to go -- >> reporter: to keep donors safe, the red cross is taking everyone's temperature when they walk in the door and when they undergo a private health screening. the centers and equipment are also regularly disinfected from top to bottom. the red cross is also screening their own staff, taking every employee's temperature when they arrive at work. as far as the blood supply, the organization says at this point there's no evidence coronavirus can be spread through blood. carlton says donating now is a no-brainer. >> blood is needed, and blood is wanted. >> reporter: he hopes more donors come forward to help. chris martinez, cbs news, pasadena, california. coming up on "cbs this
