. live from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix5 news from governor newsom warns everyone to follow emergency guide lines to show the spread of the coronavirus. he announces tens of millions dollars in extra health care funding. bay area fire departments implementing safety measures to keep crews safe. and wine country getting hit hard. how some wineries are trying toadjust to the shelter in place order. it's 6:00 on this sunday. good morning thanks for joining us i am anne makovec. darren peck is in with the forecast. what's up? more rain on the way? >> possibly. we have another one of the storms that maybe is going to throw us rain. but really kind of wants nothing to do th us. it's just down.

>> it's distancing. >> it's social distancing. that's good way of putting it. it's far off the coast on a high def doppler. you can see it towards monterey. so what i want to do is take live radar and we will switch this to the futurecast and show you how those showers sitting off the coast are going to get pulled up mainly into the south bay today. so a closer look right there getting us into the afternoon. we have a few spotty showers focused on the south bay, which is now late afternoon early evening. and you see a trend here. if we sigh rain in the bay it will happen mainly in the south bay. can't rule out a possibility of a few showers in the north. but mainly to the south. if you want to see how much we will get, it's. >> the lot. we are looking at mayor a quarter of an inch of rain for san jose. but everybody else gets a 10th of an inch of rain if we are lucky. it's not raining now. so if you are stepping out the door, here are the numbers. we range anywhere from the low 40s to about 50. it's 50 in san francisco right now.

41 in santa rosa. and this is where we are going for daytime highs. a nice day in terms of this. we will be 70 for the north bay and in the mid to upper 60s for most of the locations. i will be back in few minutes. now back over to you. >> thanks. governor newsom is stepping up his plea for people to abide by the statewide order to stay home to slow the threat of the coronavirus. the latest from kpix5 juliette goodrich. >> be a good neighbor and citizen. >> reporter: governor newsom urged young people to avoid going out in groups. and he didn't hold back call out those who are not. >> the young people out there on the beach, thinking thinks a party, time to grow up. time to wake up. time to recognize it's not just about the old folks. it's about your impact on their lives. don't be selfish. >> reporter: newsom announced more than 42 million dollars in emergency funding will be used to strengthen the state's health care system. 30 million will go towards

leasing seton medical center in daily city and st. vincent medical center in los angeles. the lease will last three months. expand crovi care for an additional 120 covid-19 patients. the governor's at seton could come as soon as wednesday. he also talked about the desperate need for hospital beds. >> we will need an additional 19,500 beds in order to meet our midway projections as it relates to the issue of covid- 19. we have search capacity within the hospital system of a little over 10,000. so we are out there trying to procure 10,000 unit. i mentioned the 10,000 beds i mentioned the work was seton and the other hospitals, the hotels we are bringing online. not just for homeless but hotels that will be part of a broader portfolio of needs to help us with our hospital

system. >> that was juliette goodrich reporting $1.4 million in emergency fund will expand service at the state's public health lab in richmond. fire department are fighting to put out the spread of covid-19 in their own firehouses. so they can continue serve the public. kpix5 maria medina is in san jose with how it is changing how firefighters across the bay area live and work. >> reporter: here in san jose, the fire department seen 14 of their test positive with more than 07 with sem toms being monitored. right now it's a balance for all firefighters to prevent exposure to the virus while continuing to show up to their jobs at a time when the public needs them the most. it's the new way of responding to medical calls. >> we are assuming when we show up every call every time could be a covid patient. >> reporter: from san jose to menlo park. >> the face piece and latex

gloves and full basically >> reporter: fire fighters in full personal protective gore. many departments sending in only one firefi ind potentiall the entire crew. the menlo park fire district took it one step further creating a unit to respond to calls from people who may be infected with covid-19. >> we have actually guys who volunteered to get on that because they understand that protect their fellow fire fighters from getting sick, maybe not only are we helping our own personnel, but helping the public as well. >> reporter: the virus has hit agencies in alameda and san jose. the challenge for firefighters in prevention including social distancing is they live together during their 48 hour shifts. >> the nature of our working it's not something that's feasible. so, we do the best we can. when we are not engaging in fire suppression or ems activity. >> we are doing everything we can to prevented one big spike

byvolunteer shortages. dozens of soldiers bocked up food at sacramento food bank on saturday. volunteers, many seniors, have stopped coming in because of shelter in place orders. but national guard troops are stepping to make sure the food gets to those who need it. >> it gives you a sensof serving your country because our country and the world is in need right now. and all of us needs to take a step back to know that we are in this together. >> in addition to helping food banks across the state, national guard soldiers are also offering medical support to passengers that were on the grand princess cruise ship. san francisco is fast tracking the hiring of health care workers. officials are removing red tapein an effort to address a shortage of nurses. kpix5da lin reports. >> reporter: it's an invite only. applicants applied online and came to sf general for the enterviews. and some were given a

conditional offer on the spot. >> helping people when they are at their worst, and when they need someone and being the person take care of them, that's a rewarding experience, and i think that was what made me want to go into the career. >> reporter: diane abramirez is one of the candidates gave conditional office. she has three years of nursing experience. what makes her more valuable she is bilingual fluent in spanner. >> having a language barrier add to the fear and it's a time where you want answers and you want someone there to comfort you and being able to speak in someone's language is important. >> reporter: the nurses can start as early as next week once they pass the back ground checks and medical screenings. >> sometimes it takes month to hear someone. to fast track it is a great initiative. >> reporter: the hiring process stakes six months or more. mayor london breed issued an emergency measure to speed it up. making sure hospitals have enough health care workers during the pandemic. health care experts recommend

an additional method to ease the shortage of nurses in california. and that's to help nursing students graduate on time. >> eight week's way for that to be taken away, i had a moment where you know i cried. i cried with my husband i cried with my daughter. >> reporter: nursing students carla and kimberly were set to graduate in two months. but the program has been temporarily suspended like everything else in the state in it was like getting punched in the chest. you know. air knocked out of you. >> reporter: they say state regulation will not allow the nursing schools to finish the row make semester through online course nos we are looking a the 14,000 plus nurses that are not going to get out there. >> reporter: medical experts say in this crisis, help can't come soon enough. >> if we can get as many peoplethat are equally tied to do their job, that's the end goal. >> reporter: the job fair will continue on sunday. the health department ans to ll 100 vacanci emergencies and

intensive care unit nurses. in san francisco, i am da lin, kpix5. and follow our continuing coverage on cbs and bay area and kpix5 for a daley round up of the latest developments on the pandemic, head to kpix.com. congressman mark desaulnier who has been a frequent guest is hospitalized in critical condition with pneumonia. his office says he developed pneumonia after fracturing a rib in a fall while running in washington, d.c. the 67-year- old has tested negative for coronavirus. in statement his chief of staff says the congressman's condition deteriorated and says his family and staff appreciate people's thoughts and prayers. desaulnier a cancer survivor andavid runner who compoteed in marathons. we wish him the best. vallejo man is in custody after police say he car jacked a man he met through a sales

app offer up. officers say oscar molina advertised a watch for sale and then allegedly lured the victim into a parking lot and held him at gunpoint asking for money. that's when vallejo police say malena took off in the victim's car. police found him not far away. malena is booked into the solano county jail. a man offered to train a dog and stole it. that's according to investigators in santa cruz county. benjamin freedberger was supposed to train a friend's dog for $1500 but he refused to return the dog after the training was complete. even after his arrest, he stied refuses to say where the dog is located. here is a photo of the dog his name is thor. and if you have information regarding the case or thor's whereabouts, call the santa cruz county sheriff department. wineries trying theisinessodels to tiin during the statewide elter in place. how you can practice social distancing but ck

by that i mean clouds are down to the south bay. and it's relatively clear for the north bay and i can show ck e's the rain we focused on this at the top of the newscast. rain distant enough. but the futurecast shows us by the time we get into the early afternoon today, some of the showers will develop over the me spotty rain today from like the bay bridge south, and we could even get an isolated shower in the north bay. but anything that develops in the north bay will be short- lived. you could get a brief downpour if you get one. but more widespread and more likely rain in the south bay. and you can see we can pick up a quarter of an inch of rain today in san jose and maybe about a 10th of an inch of rain once you get north of there and it should pretty much be a much lower number as you get north of the bay bridge. one other concern what you may not be thinking of. there's a beach hazard statement right now. and since the beach -- if you find relatively isolated ones, are maybe not a bad idea to

cope your social distance and be outside if you are thinking about going and doing it responsibly. the other thing to cope in mind, a besides distancing yourself from people, is there are going to be sneaker waves. so just keep your distance from the water. and rip currents are also a concern for any of those of you brave enough to get into the water. that's the entire coastline that goes until tonight. we talked about today's rain. i showed you the highs today at the top of the newscast. they will be like yesterday. upper 60s for most us. temperatures are great. let's look at the next storm. because once we get past today's isolated showers, monday nothing happens, and then tuesday, we are waiting for this storm up here. and this one is going to be different. it's coming from the gulf of alaska and will be noticeably colder. and it doesn't have a lot of rain with it. but we will get some rain tuesday and wednesday. as this system moves through northern california, we will probably only pick up a quarter of an inch of rain tops for both days combined. it's not like we will get big totals of rain from this. but, nonetheless, it will be

rain, through the middle of the week on tuesday and wednesday, and you can see what the totals look like there. but in addition to the rain, i want you to notice the cool down we see in the 7-day forecast. watch what happens. even with today's isolated showers, it is 70 degrees inland. and tomorrow, and monday, we cool down a little bit. but i doubt you will notice tuesday you will notice. we will be back down into the mid and upper 50s for daytime highs as scattered showers come through on tuesday. we will keep it that way wednesday and we will dry things out from there going into the end of next week. looks like we could maybe get another storm after the weekend. but i am getting way ahead of myself right now. we are not getting the amounts we need to catch up in. but at least we are keeping these weak storms come through and giving us sun. >> it matters. you know. >> absomewill be more know in the sear ha and we will could pick up two feet. >> if people could get up this and enjoy it. >> true. yes. >> all the ski resorts are ithat will

fthe cbarea is kpix5 news. welcome back to kpix5 this sunday morning. thanks for starting your day with us. it's 6:30. i am anne makovec and lets check the sunday weather forecast. lax like a little more sheltering in place weather. it does. and however, with scattered showers in the south bay being the focus, most of the rest of the us probably won't notice a lot of rain today. but there's rain coming to the south bay i want to show you what that looks like on high def doppler a bright band of green off the coast. most of it will go no monterey county as we get into later today. but, let's come in for a closer view on the futurecast and play

this forward and here come the showers for the south bay. that gets into the early afternoon. the time says around 2:30 today and not that it looks exactly like that, exactly 2:30. but you get my drift. we get into the afternoon, the showers arrive. and see how there's a focus by the time we gotten to 5:50, that's where we find few isolat pop-up showers for the north bay. but most will be focused down for the south bay and totals are not big. looking at the numbers, we are getting a quart he of an inch of rain for san jose and a 10th ofinch farther north than that. the daytime highs for today, we will find ourselves where we were yesterday. which bros us back up to numbers pretty much right around 60 for many inland locations. actually, we will be near 70 the farther inland you get. but we will top out in the mid to upper 60s across much of the bay today. i will be back with more in the complete forecast in few minute. we need to talk about the next storm that gets here on tuesday. see you in a bit, anne back

trucks. and today, an air china plane with 8 tons of medical arin athens and the shipment includes masks, protective suits, goggles and gloves. this follows an urgent request from the greek government last week. in iran, that country supreme leader is refusing u.s. assistance to fight coronavirus. he cites an unfounded conspiracy theory that the virus could be man-made by america. his comments come as iran has more than 20,000 confirmed case of coronavirus including more than 1500 reported deaths. a silicone valley company has approval for the first rapid diagnostic test. they say they can detect it in 45 minutes. and they will ship next week. the test has been approved by the food and drug administration and is a significant advancement but a some patients have been complaining it takes days to get results. san francisco mayor london

breed announced a donation of needed medical protective equipment for health care workers. the company called flex port donated $60,000 masks, 34,000 gloves, 2,000 gowns and 50 thermometers. supplies will be delivered directly to workers throughout the department of public health. breed said in statement as we plan for the surge of medical cases in our hospitals, we need more equipment to protect our workers and keep them healthy and safe. here in san francisco, we are not waiting around and hoping this equipment appears. we are doing the work to find it anywhere we can. pg&e planning to donate nearly 1 million protective masks to hospitals and first responders. those masks come from the supply that the utility keeps on hand for crews responding to fires and construction zones. 480,095 maximum and 470,000 surgical masks will go to the governor's office of emergency services. the pandemic is providing many bay area inmates with a

get out of jail free card. to prevent an outbreak behind bars. santa clara alameda and san francisco counties working on early release plans for mostly low level offenders. and others with underlying health problems. another 250 inmates have been released from santa rita jail in dub lb alone. the virus is preventing inmates from having any visitors meantime. santa clara county sheriff office suspended social visits from now until april 7th. that move is meant to protect inmates from and staff from anybody who would come into the facilities. legal visits will still be allowed. the capitol corridor train service is now operating on a reduced schedule in response to the public health crisis. the agency will maintain core service between the sacramento and san jose areas, but it will run on a mod fight timetable for riders who have essential jobs. and need to work during the shelter in place order. the new train schedule consist of 5 round trips between sacramento and oakland with 4

people are stocking up on medical arecreational marijuana. we checked out demand at dispensaries. >> reporter: cookies, marijuana and vape pens are flying off the shelves. some people are heading to dispensaries like north star holistic collective to restock not quarantine is happening and i ran out. and he want to get it now. >> i just decided to stock up on the weed in case the guys closed down. >> reporter: the dispensaries says sales hate high over the last couple days. >> we sold out of most of our products over the weekend. and we re-uped this week. think when we look at it it was a 50% increase of sales. >> reporter: it's not the only business overloaded with customers. crystal, a delivery disopinionsriry, says orders doubled. >> it's been nonstop. orders are starting as soon as we open at 8:30 and going consist mently until we close by 9:00. >> reporter: some craft breweries say people are pouring in to buy 6 packs or growlers to take home.

with me for moment. if you look at screen, this is fantastic. the sunrise is coming up at #:09 officially. we have time before it peeks up over the horizon. this is usually when with you get some of the prettiest color in the sky. really over the next 20 minute, we will probably start lighting up the bottom of the clouds. but, the clouds are important. that south down that way. and this is north over here. and we are seeing the clouds in the south bay. we are waking up to relatively clear skies in the north bay. as a result, santa rosa is down to 41. meanwhile in san jose, it's 9 degrees warmer. a little cloud blanket overhead. we are anywhere from the low to mid-40s to 50 to start out day. let's look at that rain off the coast a big batch of rain is sitting off the coast of monterey now. and futurecast picks upon that. it brings it into the south bay. i showed you at the top of the half-hour. we will look at it quickly because it's the highlight in the forecast for today. that gets us into the afternoon. and there's going to be showers that work their way into the south bay. and an interesting line here. anything north of bay bridge should see far less of this.

but for the south and east bay, we will get enough rain we could pick up as much as quarter inch of rain in better locations. totals, san jose 3/4 of an 3/10th of an inch of rain and a 10th or so for the rest of the a spotty shower in the north bay. that covers today. highs in the upper 60s for 70s for many of us while it is happening. we will leave that storm behind because i have to show outnext one. very different kind of storm. notice the location right. this one is relatively warm. we are staying in the 7 today. this is the would up here in the gulf of alaska that gets here on tuesday. that's going to drop our temperatures. we won't get out of the 50s for daytime highs on tuesday and wednesday when this system gets here. and there will be scattered showers across the bay area both days. the probably problem is it's not a lot of rain a quarter oft wednesday before it is said and done with w it will clear out by the time we get into thursday and friday. if fact, if of you look at

totals, that's about it. we will probably get as much rain today as we tuesid that, t will be a decent snow maker. let's get into the mountains i wanted to show outgood news of what the potential is for total snowfall in the sierra nevada between now and friday. close to 2 feet of new snow coming to places like kirkwood and the higher elevations of the sierra. considering the deficit, for our snow, water, content right now, you note survey they do on the first of every month, hopefully this will help. so there's the 7-day forecast. we talked about that tuesday, wednesday chance of rain. monday, not to be left out. we are to the getting rained on. we will be in between systems. and by thursday and friday, we are also done. and the temperatures will start to climb a bit, too as we approach next weekend. main focus, today,e thsouth bay. some showers in santa clara county could come in the form of an isolated thunderstorm. >> okay. >> you get a good brief downpour if that happens.

. some pet owners are wondering if the animals can catch coronavirus or transmit it. we spoke woo local veterinarian who says the only concern would be on the fur. and even so it's unlikely that the virus could travel on your dog or cat even if you get the virus. at this point, there have not been any cases where animals transmitted the virus to other pets or humans. she said now is a good time to spend time with your furry friends. >> the animals really are a good stress reducer for people. they give us what we call unconditional love. it's a good thing that you are at home and enjoying that time.
