live from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix 5 news. a bay area study helps to curb the spread of the coronavirus. telford hospital see a surge of patients being treated in the intensive care unit. the governor provides the latest numbers. plus, how some bay area restaurants are giving back to hospital workers. it is 6:00 a.m., and let's start with a check of the weather. a little rain in the forecast. we are pretty much going to replay what saturday looked like. the rain yesterday came through in the early morning, and we

had scattered showers through the rest of the day. sunday is going to do pretty much that same thing. we have rain to look doppler. we will take a look at where it is raining right now. i want to show you what is happening for the next two hours. first of all, there is a cluster of showers in the north bay right now. if you happen to be getting out on the road because you have to be somewhere dark and early, there is one lane going up through the marin cinema county line. if you look at the last hour, you can watch them marching their way from west to east up through marin up into sonoma county. but if we look ahead, we have to look a bit further off of the coast, you can see there is more rain up there in the future cast brings that forward. watch the timestamp as m.onthis ther amuch hethat eep ac the

we will all get in on the act with this. it is about two hours after sunset. right now, we look at the rain fall totals and we have picked up about a 10th of an inch from the so far. in terms of what it feels like, if you are about to step out right now, and you th wethreo g very similar to yesterday. it will be a route 60 for most locations. more evidence in the coronavirus. a strong travel advisory has been issued for parts of new york, new jersey, and connecticut to slow down the spread of the virus. more than 2000 people in the united states have died from covid-19, including a baby in chicago. this is the nation's first infant death. meanwhile, california deaths surge past 5000.wi not be ovokeden testing for the how firefightersan out the ci

>> reporter: this is the test site the city of hayward opened outside of a firehouse on monday. so far, they have tested more than 1000 people. some of the most vulnerable, the homeless, cannot get here. so firefighters say that they will go to them. >> we plan to go to them over the next couple of days. >> reporter: the homeless population in hayward stands at 500. the fear is if one person becomes ill with covid-19, it may spread among and camp mints. >> it is bound to happen, and we have to catch that as quickly as possible and isolate that group of people so that they do not spread it through their community. >> reporter: captain don nicholson said teams plan to visit the encampments within the city and test those who meet the criteria, which includes a fever of over 100 degrees. but the effort, nicholson says, comes with challenges, including making accommodations to how sick patients and the property they typically carry and shopping carts or bags. >> well, you can't house that

here while you are staying here, they will not want to come to that shelter. >> they will be isolated in the city's navigation center. >> reporter: emergency shelters in the works if there is a surge in patients. nicholson says many of the homeless they have encountered do not even know about the outbreak. hayward's firefighters may not be the only ones who will be reaching out to the public. yesterday, santa clara supervisor, dave cortese, announced the immediate deployment of paramedic and evelyn steams to set up checkpoints at homeless locations in the county, which is a homeless population of 8000. >> we need to advise them that, hey, this is going on. you need to get tested if you are showing symptoms, and you need to self quarantine. >> reporter: santa clara county has secured hotel and motel rooms for those who test positive.

meanwhile, here in hayward, firefighters are working seven days a week. they are staying at a hotel, and then they get tested themselves before returning home. in hayward, marie medina, kpix 5. three test sites are such open in the coming days. locations are set up by the end of this week. one is in chinatown, and another is in the outer sunset area. it will be operated by northeast medical services. the third site will be open by oracle park. all of those new sites will require a doctor referral before patients can get tested. santa clara county is reporting five new coronavirus deaths. that brings the total number of deaths across the bay area to 46 with more than 1800 cases reported. more californians infected with covid-19 are in intensive care units. governor avenue some said the number of patients doubled

yesterday to 410. according to kaiser permanente, the state has about 7300 icu beds. less than one quarter of them are in the bay area. governor newsom was in san jose yesterday. they are redirecting energy into refurbishing ventilators. limited she is looking to fix hundreds of devices and hopes to send them quickly to hospitals to help vertically ill patients. >> the state of california currently has independent of our hospital system, we have procured and identified some 4252 ventilators. our goal is to get to 10,000 ventilators. of those 4252 ventilators, over 1000 need to be refurbished. so everybody look in your basement, look in that old if y you want to send it, send it our way, and we will send it

right to this facility. >> one hospitals getting millions of state funds to help coronavirus patients. they are worried that they could run out of masks and other protective gear in just five days. they are set to receive patients from other hospitals this week. 200 beds will be dedicated for covid-19 patients. today, the uc san francisco medical center is instituting a universal mask policy. all step in critical areas are required to wear surgical masks. the policy is meant to provide against coronavirus transmission within the hospital. social distancing is much more difficult. the hospital said they received in of donated supplies to last about four weeks. if there was a sudden surge in patients, it could go a lot quicker than that. it is no secret that the restaurant industry has been hit by the crisis. still, some locations are preparing meals for people in

need. betty view shows us what is happening is some locations. >> reporter: the traditional family meal, which is the mill in the restaurant industry looks very different inside the location at this restaurant. each night, the winning chef and restaurant tour is a small team propping prepping for hospital workers. >> they are the reason you are who you are. people like myself and the chefs, we get a lot of the publicity and everything else, but the reality is it is the people every day supporting you and giving you the ability to push the envelope. >> reporter: out of the pandemic, he created a family kitchen where customers can order dishes from chef partners. the sales directly support hot

meals for his staff now out of work and their families at mina's trailblazer tavern, workers are prepping 200 meals to drop off a san francisco hospitals. the restaurant still has a line outside every night, but now it is for people in need to pick up pre-food no questions asked. chef david started with donated funds from investor and former twitter ceo decosta low to produce 40 meals a night. now, is downstairs operation is up to 300 boxes and night. >> we have been able to galvanize the community to, a, give if they are able to give, but also to kind of break down some of those barriers of where maybe were embarrassed at first. >> reporter: they founded

multiple bay area locations and said there has been a steep drop in sales. still, 100% of its sales through pickup and delivery services is going to the employees. san francisco's anti-town coffee rush has still been encouraging people to buy coffee, juice, and pastry workers that they will deliver to hospital workers every day. donations have grown to $50,000, and the owner says that is enough to make drop- offs at least one hospital a day for the next two months. a total of seven staffers and one patient have now tested positive for covid-19 to one location. all are said to be in good condition. the city operated a long-term care facility and have been placed under protective quarantine until april 7. in southern california, 12 people at a nursing facility

tested positive for the virus. and 89-year-old woman who lived at the san bernardino county facility died on thursday. health officials are working to expedite the testing of all of the residents and employees. a san francisco sacramento nursing program has shut down because the program requires in- person clinical trials which is not doable because of social distancing. to add insult to injury, nursing students at american river college were notified of the program shutdown via email. now, students are speaking up, hoping that the hours that they have done will actually count for something. >> take all of this into consideration in a time that is so crucial for nurses. we have no positive moments for nursing. there are no nurses that will come out of this and graduate in the time that we need them. >> students fear they will have to redo the entire semester, but they hope that speaking up will prompt the school to make their critical clinical trials

a grim situation aboard a cruise ship sailing from argentina to fort lauderdale, florida. four passengers on the holland america zaandam have died. the causes of the death have not been confirmed, but flulike symptoms impacted 53 guests and 85 cruise members. the cruise line said that two have tested positive for coronavirus. yesterday, after some hesitation, the government of panama said they would allow the cruise ship to proceed through the panama canal. northern 400 guests without symptoms have been transferred to another cruise ship. six people are hospitalized with minor injuries after a tornado ripped through parts of northeastern arkansas.

yesterday's storms knocked down walls and buildings in the towns of jonesboro. debris could be seen flying in the air. one wall was heavily damaged. right now, no reports of any serious injuries or deaths. let's come back home and start talking about our weather, which is, obviously, far easier to deal with. but we still have some rain on the roadway this morning that we want to make sure we are aware of. if you are getting out early on sunday, the rain will get more impressive in about two hours for just about all of us. we will show you what it looks like from salesforce tower which is looking to the east. let's look inside the clouds in the darkness. there is a good batch of rain right off of the coast. let's look at the initial showers that are here now. the north bay, over toward napa, we have seen the rain

work into napa county as well. right into napa. watch the motion of those showers. they are coming in across inverness and working their way across novato and getting over toward napa. it is not like this is going to be a prolonged rain, but is the start for what will be more noticeable for everybody between 8:00 and 9:00 when the bed of rain arrives. is unlike peninsula right now. you will get light rain down around daly city. but it is a better batch of rain across the coast. that is what we are focused on this morning. that is what is going to make a more noticeable rain. once we get into the later hours, that is at 7:35. you can see now that everybody is getting it. in the far one of those organized bands that come through and gets everybody at the same time. at the 7:00 hour is when we will see it at the earliest. the timing for the best rain for this has pushed back just a

little bit from where it was in last nights forecast model. not that big of a difference for most of us. the best rain comes through in the early morning. we will keep a few scattered showers going today through the afternoon. we will advance this to 5:00, you can see there are still scattered showers showing up. the thing to remember about today is once we get through with this band of widespread rain in the morning, we get into the early afternoon, those showers may come through an isolated thunderstorms perhaps. maybe even some small hail but they will be isolated. if you take a look up., that is midnight going into monday. there are a few showers trying to get into menacing lake and sonoma county. that is the only locations that have a chance for follow-up showers on monday. it will not be much, but there is a small chance for rain is we get into monday.

here's what it looks like for the seven-day forecast. we clear out to left over clouds for most of us in the seven day. monday, if you are in the far north bay, you still have a chance for rain. then the story quickly shifts to sunny and warmer. those are daytime highs that will climb well up into the mid to upper 70s by the end of this week and into next week. even in the bay, we will warm up to 70 for daytime highs. more rain today, devon, and it will be almost like an instant replay of yesterday. the sunshine in the middle the week, that is something to look forward to. it looks like it will be beautiful. >> yes, it will. if you want sunny and warm, stick around. humans helping neighbors has been an inspirational part of the coronavirus crisis. but in one colorado neighborhood, it is a dog doing some of that work. the dogs name is sundance comedy makes regular runs to a neighbors house on behalf of his owner to deliver groceries. she has a medical condition and

it is time for a quick sports update. a second player with the colorado avalanche is tested positive for the coronavirus. neither player has been named publicly, and the avs are in self isolation. they were one of the last teams to play the sharks before the nhl suspended the season. the ottawa senators played the day before, and they recorded that two of their players had tested positive. both teams used the same visiting locker room. sharks manager, doug wilson, said that no san jose players have had any symptoms. james dolan, executive chairman of madison square garden company and owner of the new york knicks has tested

the timeis6:30. cbs bay let's get right to devon and the weather center because we have some rain in the timing is predictable. it is just like yesterday. the best of the rain will come through in the next three hours. it will be early morning rain on sunday just like saturday was, we will call it scattered showers. it will stay with us through the rest of the day. there are some of us who are already seeing some decent rain. seven sonoma, southern napa county, those are your showers, and you can watch as they are slowly marching their way across the northern bay area from west to east. that gives us one view, but we also have some showers down here over the peninsula. it is ready to start bringing rain in the east bay in the next 15 minutes.

the better rain gets here in the next few hours. watch the time on this ture cash. that is at 9:00 a.m. that is what we will get the most organized widespread band of rain. we will spotlight that coming up in the complete forecast. right now, if you have somewhere you need to be on the sunday morning, and you are stepping out the door right now, there are your temperatures. right around 50 for most locations. as far as the rest of the day is concerned, daytime highs in the upper 60s. that is for everybody. not just a south bay, but the east bay and the north bay. all the numbers are the same, it will be in the 60s. san francisco is working on a way to shelter the homeless during the coronavirus crisis. they look at the balancing act that such an effort will require. >> reporter: in the next week, a big push for vulnerable population without

endangering another. >> we whe we are to better understand where we may be going. cisc needs more testing so three more sites will open next week. however, the city says and ongoing shortage of protective equipment, the equipment needs to go to the healthcare workers. >> they are trying their best to save lives and serve the public, but they are living in fear as to whether or not they have the virus. >> we have issued instruction to all labs that they must prioritize their test in the same way. >> reporter: next week will bring the deployment of large- scale sheltering. the first part of that means moving people out of traditional shelters. >> starting next week, muskogee west will open up and supplies are being delivered this weekend.

and provide services. >> i've seen it firsthand. those individuals outselling drugs and causing gatherings to be worse because people are gathering to buy drugs, that is a public health problem. we still have room in our jails for those types of individuals. >> reporter: muskogee west will be able to provide additional sheltering, but as for the 3000 hotel rooms, they will also be for the homeless along with first responders and front-line healthcare workers who are also high risk and do not want to take that risk home to their families. in san francisco, wilson walker, kpix 5. louisiana governor, john bel edwards, said one of his staff members is died from the virus. 33-year-old april don worked in the office of disability affairs. she brightened everyone's day with a smile, and she was a tremendous asset to her team and was an inspiration to everyone who met her.

food to people from here. just like the rest of us, they are having to do a lot of new things these days. >> the coronavirus has been the mother of invention. >> we are used to working shoulder to shoulder, we can do that anymore. we have to be 6 feet apart. we can handle fewer volunteers than we used to. they have created volunteers who move boxes down a conveyor belt instead of passing them to someone else. they found out things move quickly this way. >> it is super efficient and it is really needed as seen by how many people are coming through. >> normally it food giveaways, people stand in line, putting groups of strangers in close contact. but today, as cars lined up around the building, once again, things were different. drivers pop their trunks and pulled up without getting out, and volunteers loaded the food into the cars which then pulled away and when at a safe distance, the drivers closed

their own trunk lives. >> we are figuring out ways to get people food where they do not have to get close or touch people. people do not feel like their food has been handled by a lot of folks. the diet drive through is proving to be much more efficient for people. >> especially with the whole drive through, it is very efficient. >> reporter: the food banks executive director says considering the response to today's giveaway, they will probably consider the saturday drive-through distributions. he says he thinks that they will want to return to walking up so that they can feed their hunger for social gatherings. >> it is a way for people to get their food needs met. that food bank giveaway

laboratory produces 15,000 tests per day. that is beginning later this week. videogames is not normally considered to be a healthy pastime, but during the coronavirus crisis, the world health organization is actually encouraging it. the u.s. ambassador to the organization posted online that it is good for social distancing efforts. the who recommendation is suggesting it because in fact, they have identified mental health disorders that include addiction to gaming. they are now adding new features and extra rewards. focusing on the weather, we have another round of rain coming in for sunday. that is mainly in the morning, but there will be a chance of isolated showers. it is really between now and about noon. the rest of the rain will happen. like the shot from the top of salesforce tower. low cloud saying down over the bay bridge where the latest check on high def doppler showed us that we have some light showers. let's come in for a closer look before i show you the main

event, which i see is coming in about two hours from now, i do not want to overlook the fact that it is raining out there now, and i've been watching the span of rain march its way across napa county since we started the newscast. the showers are a little heavier now heading for 101. that will continue to march its way across the road to sonoma county. that is not the only one. we have this band that just came across the peninsula. that shot we were looking at across the bridge with the low- grade clouds, there is light rain holding together now as it goes across the bay and brings a few light showers through alameda county. let's go to the wide view. it is the rain that sits out over the pacific that i want to focus on. the future cast picks up on it. you see that band, the heavier rain. it gets here between the 9:00 hour and noon. look at the organization on

accumulate in the sierra. you have to go to higher elevations, and it is only for about an inch. it is not a very good snow maker for the sierra. the temperatures in the bay, they are just fine temperaturewise. if you look at the rest of today, we will warm up 10 degrees to 12 degrees. temperatures today, low 60s. san ramon will go to 60. wasn't in will hit 59. livermore, you will go to 58. walnut creek goes to 61 pleasant hill hit 63, and we will top out at 61 at san rafael today. santa rosa and petaluma will both do 61. the far north bay has temperatures coming in at the mid-50s. the long-range forecast, with the six-day to 10 day range, the red shade on the map has gr
